No more social distancing for media in Rose Garden as White House decides it ‘looks better’ when reporters bunch together
Published: June 5, 2020 at 8:28 p.m. ET

Journalists’ health put at risk by Trump team, charges White House Correspondents Association

Apparently eager to portray a country that’s definitively back on track, the White House on Friday effectively forced reporters to abandon the Trump administration’s own social-distancing guidance.

Chairs for correspondents, of late placed at a remove from one another in accordance with the widely recognized recommendation to stay 6 feet away from others to lower the risk of coronavirus contagion, were assembled in the Rose Garden in status quo ante fashion.

Why, asked the White House Correspondents Association, were reporters being asked to violate established best practices? A succinct answer from the White House:

‘It looks better.’
— Judd Deere, deputy press secretary

President Trump, at the podium, took note of the nearly shoulder-to-shoulder seating arrangement Friday as it were an organic occurrence, or perhaps based on epidemiological factors, saying: “I noticed you’re starting to get much closer together. Looks much better, I must say.”

It was probably too much to expect any reporter, let alone a majority, to show the tiniest amount of good sense and move their chairs 6 feet apart. Instead, their Association wrote a strongly worded memo which makes exactly no difference. The chairs stay where Trump wants, even though the chairs are very light and folding. Maybe at least one reporter should have thrown a chair at the Presidential podium?

The coronavirus pandemic has produced “one of the greatest wealth transfers in history,” CNBC’s Jim Cramer said. "This is the first recession where big business … is coming through virtually unscathed, if not going for the gold,” he added.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 has recovered all of its losses from the coronavirus meltdown and set a new high on Thursday. Many investors are betting on a V-shaped economic recovery, Cramer said.

“I think we’re looking at a V-shaped recovery in the stock market, and that has almost nothing to do with a V-shaped recovery in the economy,” he said.

It needs to said, since most of you aren't wealthy, but the greatest wealth transfer in history is increasing the wealth of the wealthy and, related, increasing the National Debt by about 25% in only two months. If you are rich, you can't help but love what Trump has done for you, even if you don't love him.

Pooled Testing for Covid-19

I think our fundamental problem is not a lack of good ideas. It’s that, outside of some isolated pockets of progress, our entire civilization no longer has the will (or ability? is there a difference?) to implement good ideas, or even really to try them. For anything new that requires coordination, today there are just too many stakeholders who need to be brought on board, too many risks that need further study. So I see Zeph, and anyone like him, as occupying a tragic position, a bit like that of an Aztec advocating the use of the wheel. “Sure,” the Aztec elders might calmly reply, “wheeled transport is obvious enough that we’ve all considered it, but a moment’s thought reveals why, in our actually existing empire, it would be reckless, costly, and of at most marginal benefit…”

Washington State has had 313 new cases in a 24 hour period. So, Victoria in agreement with Ottawa has decided that the border between BC and Washington State is to remain closed until the end of July. But that could be extended if Washington State's covid numbers remain high.

Which is why the border is closed to none essential traffic for a lot longer.

COVID has slowed down in Canada and so we are holding our own up here. Things in BC are slowly restarting like Hollywood North but there are a lot of regs that must be followed.

Ontario and Quebec are finally ready to start moving into phase 2 of reopening their provinces as their infection rates and death rates have gone down.

Though there is a small stumbling block for Ontario. Toronto and larger area around it is still in phase 1. Covid numbers still too high.

BC is good for phase 3 whenever the word comes down from Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix.

Alberta's numbers seem to be on the rise.

Thanks for the update! As a whole, Canada does seem to be doing far better than the US when it comes to getting it under control, and then thoughtfully reopening. I'm not surprised about Alberta, though. My impression (formed during the constitutional convention I listened to many, many years ago) is they're kind of rednecked.

Here in the US, despite that fact that NYS dropped from ~11,000 new cases/ day April 10, 2020 to ~750 per day now (a decrease of 10,250), the country as a whole has only dropped from ~32,000 new cases per day to ~22,500 new cases per day (a decrease of 9,500).

So the rest of the country looks like our efforts at mitigating SARS-CoV-2 are going nowhere, fast.

We're at stage 4 of 5... whatever that means. I wasn't even aware of that until one of my neighbors mentioned it to me the other day while I was mowing the lawn. Outside of wearing a mask at the big-box home improvment store by me, and the month or so where everyone was hoarding stuff I really haven't even noticed much of a change around here so far.

I just looked... Not at 4 just yet... he was wrong. That happens on Friday.

Office workers can go back to work in their offices, retail stores and malls can go back to full capacity, restaurants can go to 75% capacity and everything else is pretty much 50% capacity. Playgrounds will open back up too. The article I read made no mention of churches... I have no idea what they're at now.

My brother was finally able to start going back to church. They only allow 10 people at a time where he lives still, but the church has made efforts to do services and activities every day of the week for now and schedules interested people for the slots until they open back up normally. That's probably the best thing I've heard so far. I'm happy for him.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Welcome.

We have done but it has been a struggle for Ontario and Quebec to get to this spot. *Fingers crossed* that Toronto and the surrounding areas can get things under control.

Alberta has always been conservative on most things. It could be that maybe some from BC have gone into Alberta in spite of being told to stay in BC. The the other thing is American tourists coming into Alberta saying that they are going to Alaska. Americans can still do that.

Banff has had a number of American tourists coming through and so this could account for the rise in numbers. That was on Sunday's news.

My province might be getting a little twitchy about that because of boat traffic while be starting going up and down the coast.

Yeah, I know it's still not good down there and still lots of hot spots. Washington state is off limits for who knows how long to BC travellers.

I think the reason why Quebec and Ontario are having difficulties is because they have really active international airports, highly urban centers, tight housing, and really good public transportation over a large population area.

I mentioned what I did about Alberta because there seems to be a strain of asocial truculence, that might show up in less than helpful behaviors when it comes to trying to quash a pandemic. I could be wrong, but I think of Alberta as the Texas of Canada.

The middle of May brought a long weekend to all of Canada in BC it was the Victoria Day weekend. So, in Toronto there were huge numbers of people gathering in the local parks even with park people being out and trying to insure social distancing.

Toronto is also the largest city in Canada followed by Montreal then Vancouver then Calgary then Edmonton.

Also Kiki, I don't think the problem in Alberta is with Albertans themselves. I did mention that Americans are coming into Alberta saying they are going to Alaska when in fact they are VACATIONING in places like Banff and Jasper which they SHOULD NOT BE DOING.

I should apologize for making Alberta's numbers seem worse than they are. It was 20 new cases in Edmonton. Their numbers are not too much higher than BC's. And they have been there for us. Example when their numbers were lower than ours and they had extra medical supplies they sent the extra to BC. Canadians come together in a crisis.

Sigh. I apologize for my fellow countrypeople.

I've been following the numbers of both the total for the US as well as for the various states (plus my home state California and my home county Los Angeles for personal reasons). So I have a fair idea of what's happening when and where.

I don't have any information at all about Canada, except what you bring here. Just to be nosy, did Ontario(Toronto) and Quebec(Montreal) experience a reduction followed by a spike 3 or so weeks after Victoria day? If you could answer that question without too much trouble, I'd appreciate it.

We have a president who, instead of wearing a mask, turns defiance of mask-wearing into a heroic act of defiance against liberals; who forces 1,100 West Point cadets to travel back to campus, and quarantine for two weeks, so he can get a photo op addressing their graduation; who is planning a mass rally in Tulsa, Okla., on Saturday — where the most notable precaution is that you sign a legal disclaimer that you “voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to Covid-19 and agree not to hold Donald J. Trump for President Inc” liable.

It is absolutely devilish — like Trump wakes up every morning and asks himself: What health expert’s advice can I defy today?

Maybe your activist Legacy Media shouldn't have spent 24/7 the last three years spouting lies, hypocrisy and hyperbole if you want anybody to take them seriously when something you actually give a shit about is happening.

The media is squarely to blame for the fact that nobody believes them anymore.

In the second week of April, a week after the CDC recommended all Americans wear face coverings in public, the divide between Democrats and Republicans who said they wear masks at all times when leaving home was fairly narrow. But once Trump very clearly did not wear a mask in public, that transmitted a signal that if you’re a good supporter of the president you don’t wear a mask.

Sorry, not sorry, Brenda.

I'm not going to apologize for people who have nothing at all to do with me and who I have no place to apologize for.

I'm not looking to score virtue signalling points with you like somebody else here.

You know more about it than I do.

I wasn't ever going to wear a mask, regardless. Trump could wear one tomorrow and tell everybody else that they should and I still won't wear a mask.

OK!

Yeah, I can see Americans coming to Canada and ignoring your rules, or worse, actively subverting them.

Sigh. I apologize for my fellow countrypeople.

Exactly Kiki. They are subverting the rules put in place by the Canadian and your own American Federal governments.

Alberta is my second home so I have been keeping an eye on things there.

Best numbers I can find for Toronto and area is on May 21st they recorded 413 new cases. 3 weeks was June 11th and they only recorded 184 cases. Better but still too high for phase 2.

Ontario and this number is for the whole province has over 32,000 cases as of June 16th.

These are also best numbers for Montreal as of May 21st, they recorded 324 cases. 3 weeks to June 11th and they recorded 63 new cases.

Total number of cases for all of Quebec is over 54,000 as of June 16th.

Total number of cases for all of BC is over 2,000 as of June 16th.

Total number of cases for all of Alberta is over 7,000 as of June 16th.

Total number of cases for all of Canada is over 99,000.
Total number of deaths for Canada over 8,000.

THANK YOU! for those numbers! I really appreciate it. I now at least have some idea of what's going on up there as opposed to very little idea at all!

I've lived in California for over 3 decades but it doesn't really feel like home. So It's nice that you've lived here and there, and have more than one home to your name.

It's okay. I learned something from the research. I wasn't sure what the total number of cases for all of Canada was. News just usually gives numbers for the province they are talking about.

I was born in BC and lived around the Lower Mainland and out into the Valley growing up. But Alberta holds a special place in my heart. I've been out there a few times. My Blair lived out there and my dad was from Southern Alberta, a little place called Medicine Hat. So, I get you.
