The Self-protect High Energy Laser Demonstrator, currently exists as a bulky, ground-based demonstrator. However, the Air Force is optimistic that Self-protect High Energy Laser can be shrunk to a small pod that could be tested on an F-15 fighter by this year and eventually integrated also integrated into F-16 and F-35 single-engine fighters. Some sources suggest the system may see its first flight tests on C-17 or C-130 cargo planes.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Lasers are like really, really long-range bullets.

If you fire a bullet in a city or a suburb AND YOU MISS YOUR TARGET, the bullet will for sure hit something or someone else. It's only when you get way out into the rural areas that a bullet might eventually run out of kinetic energy, and fall harmlessly to the ground.

A laser that misses its target could hit something unintended. Maybe a person. Maybe a building. Maybe a civilian aircraft. The only way to TRY to not hit something in the background is to always aim away from the earth, or at the very least above the horizon. I'm sure in combat people will be careful of that. But even if you are careful, of course, you might hit a satellite, or the ISS, or the moon ...

Laser weapons - what a stupid idea.

Laser weapons systems are fitted with maps of the ground and location of aircraft as well as orbital parameters of spacecraft. If the beam gets too close to something that you want to avoid, the beam is automatically shut down using a system called predictive avoidance.

If it is say a shot from ground to air and its a miss, then the laser energy is lost, dispersed into the atmosphere and into space.

Because the computer knows where absolutely everything and everybody is at all times? Is that like the drones that always hit their targets and nothing else? Because lasers disperse so easily in the atmosphere they can bounce laser light off the moon?

The U.S. Army is building the world’s most powerful laser weapon, capable of vaporizing targets and interrupting adversaries’ technology signals. The weapon is over one million times more powerful than any other laser developed before, NewScientist reported.

Now THIS is a post dedicated to showing the new laser weapons have no imperfections! They never hit anything or anyone who's unintended! And they always dissipate harmlessly when they miss! Gee, I wonder who posted that claim to perfection, and then denied it??

The F-35 has a very long range tracking system. Now, the only way the S-500 can find it to shoot it down is to turn on. Even then it can't really track it. The F-35 has the RCS of a golf ball. Because of decoys it will also look like there are a thousand of them or with radar jamming none at all. Once the S-500 does turn on it can be located, attacked and destroyed from any direction. Even several at once. That includes space.

Also comrade Signym, a jet like the F-35 can control several air to surface long range missiles at a time from a distance to far for even the S-500 to shoot down. One scenario would be for an F-15 to fire off the missiles and the F-35 guide them in. Another is for a drone to fly close, launch its missiles and again the F-35 guide them in. The ways it can happen is limited only by ones imagination. Hey, maybe the F-35 can send the location of a missile defense site to land artillery and have them take it out? What do ya think?

The Small Diameter Bomb II (SDB II) is highly anticipated over the SDB I because of its tri-mode seeker capability. Each munition will be able to guide towards its target using laser, imaging infrared or radar homing, or a combination of these modes (embedded GPS/INS, which is how the SDB I navigated to its target, is actually a 4th mode for stationary targets). This will allow SDB IIs to hit moving targets as well as stationary ones in any weather, day or night, at standoff ranges, with incredible reliability and precision.

Russia has tested a new radar system that can evade detection by enemy drones or aircraft, its developer told the state-run RIA Novosti news agency on Friday.

Passive radars operate without a transmitter, instead receiving signals from other objects to track targets. Russia’s new passive radar, called Tropa (Russian for “path”), uses communication towers to locate signals without transmitting one itself, RIA Novosti reported.

I was hoping that the videos would be more informative, but they lacked important details ... like WHAT and HOW.

For example ... Russian engine failure on the SU35... what kinds of failures were they? The video claims to know the percentage of the engines returned because of defects, but doesn't know what kinds of defects they were? These were INDIAN-purchased engines. Surely, INDIA knows what went wrong!

The audio then blathers on that the "engine is the heart of the jet".

Really?
Like nobody knows that?

Similar to the video on the "anti-radiation" missile. It makes a big deal about how it was delivered early for testing ... they repeat that at least three times! ... but doesn't go into detail about HOW it can locate a radar station even if the radar is turned off, "or [it] begins to move". The only thing I can think of is that rather than using the radar continuously as a homing beacon, it sets a GPS target and then flies to that.

Next time, could you please post videos with less advert and more info?
Thanks.

The Joss Whedon script for Serenity, where Wash lives, is Serenity-190pages.pdf at https://www.mediafire.com/two

Russia's state-owned news service, TASS, has published an extraordinarily defamatory article about NASA astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor. The publication claims that Auñón-Chancellor had an emotional breakdown in space, then damaged a Russian spacecraft in order to return early. This, of course, is a complete fabrication.

The context for the article is the recent, near-disastrous docking of the Russian Nauka science module with the International Space Station. The TASS article attempts to rebut criticism in US publications (including Ars Technica) that covered the incident.
https://arstechnica.com/science/2021/08/russias-space-program-just-thr
ew-a-nasa-astronaut-under-the-bus
/

Flight controllers at NASA and Roscosmos averted a disaster on Thursday (July 28, 2021) after a large Russian module docked with the International Space Station and began to "inadvertently" fire its thrusters.

The Russian "Nauka" module linked to the space station at 8:30 am CT (13:30 UTC), local time in Houston, where NASA's Mission Control is based. After that, Russian cosmonauts aboard the station began preparing to open the hatches leading to Nauka, but at 11:34 am Houston time, Nauka unexpectedly started to fire its movement thrusters.

Within minutes, the space station began to lose attitude control. This was a problem for several reasons. First of all, the station requires a certain attitude to maintain signal with geostationary satellites and talk to Mission Control on the ground. Also, solar arrays are positioned to collect power based upon this predetermined attitude.

Another concern is G forces on the station's structure. The various components of the extensive space station were assembled in microgravity and designed to operate at zero-G. So even small stresses on the vehicle can induce small cracks or other problems with the station's structure.

For all of these reasons, space station flight controllers in Houston and Moscow acted quickly after the station started to drift. Attitude control was fully lost at 11:42 am, and engines on the space station's service module were fired. This was followed by a handover to the Russian Progress vehicle attached to the station, which began to fire its thrusters. This tug-of-war offset the Nauka module thruster activity, which eventually stopped after fuel supplies were exhausted. By 12:29 pm on Thursday, attitude control was restored. It made for quite an hour on the ground and in space.

Kremlin: US military assistance could 'cause unpredictable actions' by Ukraine

A Kremlin spokesperson on Thursday raised concerns about the U.S. offering military assistance to Ukraine, saying such actions could make the Eastern European country behave unpredictably and "can only be a cause for regret."

Out of curiosity, if Russia were to aid the narcos in Mexico to destabilize the Mexican government, what do you think Biden* should do about that? Do you think Russia actively intervening in a US-bordering country would concern Biden* at all?

The European Court of Human Rights ruled Tuesday that the Russian government was responsible for the death of former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko in 2006, sparking further questions about the Kremlin’s role in poisoning its opponents, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The court found that Russian agents Andrei Lugovoi and Dmitry Kovtun were assigned to assassinate Litvinenko, who died after drinking tea laced with polonium-210, a deadly radioactive isotope, at a bar in London.

The ECHR added that the Russian government had failed to provide “any other satisfactory and convincing explanation of the events.”

The Kremlin called the court’s ruling baseless and denied any involvement. Lugovoi, who is currently a lawmaker in Russia’s State Duma, said the judgment was “wrongful, unlawful and politically biased.”

The verdict opens up more questions about the death of Litvinenko, a fierce critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The former Russian agent – who had fled Russia to Britain – had accused Putin of coming to power by organizing a series of apartment bombings in 1999. The attack eventually led to Russia’s invasion of Chechnya.

Meanwhile, British authorities have charged a third Russian agent for the 2018 chemical attack in Salisbury that targeted former Soviet spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia, according to the Evening Standard.

Officials have already charged two men whom they allege were officers of the Russian military service.

The Kremlin, again, has denied any involvement.

EU warns Russia over cyberattacks ahead of German elections

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union on Friday warned Russia against allowing hackers to attack data bases or spread disinformation in some of the 27 member countries just as Germans were preparing to go the polls for weekend parliamentary elections.

“Some EU member states have observed malicious cyber activities, collectively designated as Ghostwriter, and associated these with the Russian state,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement.

Of course it's Russia! hacking into elections.

It couldn't be the people of Europe getting sick and tired of their countries being destroyed by non-elected EU officials that their elected idiots put in place.

Why Putin’s Money Eludes Offshore Investigators
The Pandora Papers’ findings suggest that Russian kleptocrats are relying less on the West as a financial haven.

Although the Pandora Papers are far from a complete or even statistically representative reflection of the global shell company industry, the relative thinness of these findings suggests that Putin and his people have drawn conclusions from previous revelations, such as the Panama Papers, which lent international prominence to Putin’s cellist friend Sergei Roldugin and his remarkably active offshore companies. It also indicates that the widespread narrative of the Russian kleptocracy’s dependence on the West as a safe haven for its capital may well be inaccurate in 2021 — or indeed, may have missed the point for years.
