Yeah. They gave Obama the Nobel Peace Prize for no reason, right before he started as many wars as GWB did.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"preprint study" To be completely factual, this study was never published. It failed at the 'preprint' stage. So it looks like the preprint step worked.

Whether or not this was a study that merited extra thorough review I couldn't say. There are hundreds of COVID papers published every day, from clinical notes to scientific studies. And that doesn't count the vast number that are rejected at the start from publication and never see the light of day.

IN GENERAL though, nobody gets their paper printed, hence their PhD, or their research grants, by trying to reproduce old studies. Instead they're rewarded for novel studies. So one of the main tenets of reliable scientific knowledge - reproducibility - is unrewarded by the research and publication system.

To be fair, the Peace Prize isn't like the Nobel prizes in medicine or science: Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Nobel Prize in Physics, and Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. I think it's far more subjective, like the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The Nobel Prize made Republicans hate Obama even more than before, so the Prize failed:

Awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to US President Barack Obama failed to achieve what the Nobel committee hoped it would, its ex-secretary has said. Geir Lundestad told the AP news agency that the committee hoped the award would strengthen Mr Obama. Instead, the decision was met with criticism in the US by Republicans. Mr Obama considered not going to pick up the award in Norway's capital, Oslo. "Even many of Obama's supporters believed that the prize was a mistake," he says. You're certainly not changing anybody's mind here.

In fact, with that admission, the committee themselves just let everyone know that they feel that award is nothing more than a tool to control how other people think.

Obama received that award completely without merit. Obama knew it. Even his supporters knew it.

It was a woke award before woke was even in the lexicon.

The current 'top 10' per capita new cases are Botswana, UK, Netherlands, Tunisia, Spain, Cuba, Mongolia, Georgia, Libya, and Columbia. http://91-divoc.com/pages/covid-visualization/

But the UK, the Netherlands, and Spain are 3 of the top 5, despite vaccination rates of 68%, 68%, and 63%, respectively. https://ourworldindata.org/covid-vaccinations

OBVIOUSLY, something either in addition to, or besides, vaccination rates in going on.

Only about half the populations of the countries you mention are completely vaccinated. Point being, that leaves a lot exposed to still getting sick. This virus is still poised to kill millions more.

Fox News’s Covid-19 coverage is confusingly both for and against vaccinations, but mostly against

The viral clip of FOX News Host Sean Hannity talking favorably about vaccines came immediately before he pivoted to a story about a college athlete who was temporarily paralyzed after she took a different sort of vaccine in 2019 — the subtext being that inoculations are more dangerous than the experts would have you believe and that mandates are ill-advised. (Hannity has previously tried to discredit Covid-19 vaccines by saying stuff like, “the great Dr. Fauci has been wrong so often” and proclaiming he was “beginning to have doubts” about getting the shot.)

As Matt Gertz detailed for Media Matters, Hannity’s favorable comments were sandwiched between shows anchored by Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham that both pushed vaccine misinformation:

On Monday, Carlson revived his lie about a government database purportedly showing thousands of deaths from the vaccines and urged viewers to ignore journalists who are encouraging vaccination because they want to “make you comply,” over on-screen graphics reading “MANY VACCINATED PEOPLE ARE HOSPITALIZED” and “OUR LEADERS WANT US TO SHUT UP & NOT ASK QUESTIONS.” Ingraham’s broadcast likewise stressed reasons to question “the efficacy of the vaccine itself among adults.”

It’s true that Hannity was not the only Fox News personality to speak out on behalf of vaccines on Monday. While Hannity stopped sort of explicitly asking his viewers to get vaccinated, Fox & Friends co-host Steve Doocy went further and said, “If you have the chance, get the shot. It will save your life.”

But Doocy was undermined by his co-host Brian Kilmeade, who claimed in response that it’s not the government’s job “to protect anybody” and said of those who choose not to get vaccinated, “if you feel as though this is not something for you, don’t do it, but don’t affect my life.” (A person’s choice to not get vaccinated does in fact affect other people by making it more possible for deadlier mutations of the virus to develop.)

Millions of Americans are now demonstrating their loyalty to Trump and their tribe by risking their lives, and the lives others, as they refuse to be vaccinated against Covid-19 -- despite the fact that Trump himself reportedly received the vaccine in January.

Vaccine skepticism has been a problem in Trump country as the government races to defeat the virus by using inoculation to achieve so-called "herd immunity." As president Trump had modeled anti-science skepticism by generally refusing to wear a face mask and ridiculing the top pandemic advisor, Dr. Anthony Fauci. He held mass campaign rallies against expert advice, was so effective in politicizing the pandemic that even after he publicly agreed the vaccines were safe, his followers lagged in taking it.

The bond Trump forged with his followers was created in large part by his appeal to their pre-existing resentment of elites, including experts on everything from climate change to medicine (Remember how he mused about treating Covid-19 infections with light and disinfectant?). Republicans have played this game for years, which may explain why GOP voters have far less confidence in science than Democrats. Indeed, as historian Naomi Oreskes noted recently, GOP spokespeople have criticized scientists for decades and even invented controversies to challenge experts on concerns such as climate change. With the pandemic the mindset created by the anti-expert drumbeat made it natural for Republican governors to resist scientists who called for life-saving measures like mask mandates for public spaces.

In the case of vaccines, even the fact that they were developed with funds provided by the Trump administration doesn't seem to have much effect. A Washington Post-ABCNews poll released two weeks ago found that while 93 percent of Democrats either have gotten their shots or plan to, only 49 percent of Republicans fall into the same category. Although income was also related to attitudes about the shot, with less-wealthy people showing more skepticism, this factor was not nearly as important as was loyalty to the GOP and Trump.

Anecdotally, it can seem as if vaccine resistance has become part of the culture of resentment that Trump exploited in his campaigns. After years of hearing their man demonize the media, Trump's followers may reflexively tune-out information that could save their lives. When political consultant Frank Luntz convened a focus group to discuss vaccines, one woman said, "A lot of the hesitancy that's coming from the right is just from being bullied, being humiliated, basically, by the media," adding, "I don't really see the point in getting it if nothing is going to change, and I haven't gotten sick."

As regions of under-vaccinated Trump Country experience surges in cases, many in right-wing media are fighting against the government's best efforts to save people from a virus that has already killed 600,000 Americans. Pro-Trump activist Charlie Kirk went on Fox News recently to compare vaccine guidelines to apartheid in South Africa. Meanwhile Fox News opinion hosts have repeatedly misrepresented government policy as they have the vaccine effort. Though notably, Sean Hannity issued an impassioned plea Monday night for his viewers to take Covid seriously, and to consider taking the vaccine.

Like supporting Trump's Big Lie that says the last election was stolen from him, opposition to the vaccine may be shaping up to be a requirement for those who would claim to remain on Team Trump. That this stance requires taking a dramatic risk -- one's own life -- aligns with the type of thinking that led so many of his followers to heed his call to come to Washington, DC, and then attack the Capitol with the hope of stopping the final certification of the election results.

In both cases, Trumpists caught up in something akin to LARPing will inevitably encounter real life consequences in the form of prison terms, hospital stays, or even funerals. Their enablers and defenders will want to blame Trump or argue that their only victims are themselves. Trump and his amen chorus obviously deserve real blame. But let's also recognize that the actions of these true believers have ripple effects: The nation was wounded by the January 6 attack and it suffers with every hospitalization and death of an unvaccinated Trump voter. Enough with the LARPing.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Quote:

The White House has decided to hit back harder on misinformation and scare tactics after Republican lawmakers and conservative activists pledged to fight the administration’s stated plans to go “door-to-door” to increase vaccination rates. The pushback will include directly calling out social media platforms and conservative news shows that promote such tactics.

“The big misinterpretation that Fox News or whomever else is saying is that they are essentially envisioning a bunch of federal workers knocking on your door, telling you you've got to do something that you don't want to do,” Anthony Fauci, President Biden’s chief medical adviser, said in an interview on Sunday. “That's absolutely not the case, it's trusted messengers who are part of the community doing that — not government officials. So that's where I think the disconnect is.”...

... Biden allied groups, including the Democratic National Committee, are also planning to engage fact-checkers more aggressively and work with SMS carriers to dispel misinformation about vaccines that is sent over social media and text messages. The goal is to ensure that people who may have difficulty getting a vaccination because of issues like transportation see those barriers lessened or removed entirely.

“We are steadfastly committed to keeping politics out of the effort to get every American vaccinated so that we can save lives and help our economy further recover,” White House spokesperson Kevin Munoz said. “When we see deliberate efforts to spread misinformation, we view that as an impediment to the country's public health and will not shy away from calling that out.”

The pushback is a change of tone and approach from earlier this year, when the White House often chose to ignore its most vocal conservative critics out of a desire not to elevate them. It is a tacit acknowledgment that the July 4 goal of 70 percent vaccination nationwide was overly optimistic, if not naive. And it underscores that two realities are setting in: It’s becoming more difficult to convince vaccine-skeptics to get their shots (of the 10 least vaccinated states, all were won by Donald Trump in 2020) and the anti-vaccine voices, already vocal in the country, are becoming more mainstreamed by Republicans eager to oppose Biden-led initiatives.

About the Politico article

1) I'm not sure that "trusted advisors" sounds any better than "government officials". In fact, it sounds creepier.

2) Am I the only one to catch the irony of the article bringing up "conservatives" and "Donald Trump" immediately after the call to "keep politics out" of the vaccination drive?

3) This desire of the DNC to control EVERYTHING tells me that they're still desperately trying to dislodge Trump from the political equation, and everything they've tried hadn't worked. It's like Brexit in Britain: that un-dislodgeable stone that the Liberals tried so hard to get rid of, but which they kept stumbling on over and over.

*****

The way I see it, the DNC is going to try and pin the Delta variant resurgence as well as the economic fallout on "conservatives" and "Donald Trump", and they're going to try to pin the mess we will be in by 2022 on the GOP.

Altho Trump pushed for rapid vaccine development and reportedly was vaccinated himself, his supporters have backed themselves into a corner by being so anti-vaxx that fallout from the Delta variant can be pinned on them, and made it impossible for Trump to try and steer his supporters in a different direction.

So now we have two entrely different narratives: the "establishment" and mainstream media who lied 24/7/365 about everything else but have the high ground on Covid-19, and the alternete media who were right about everything else but have ceded the high ground on Covid-19. So a lot depends on what happens next and who controls the narrative for how many people.
IF the Delta variant causes widespread deaths among the unvaccinated, then the DNC and M$M will flog this for all it's worth. Half of the nation will believe that narrative and some portion ... won't. The remainder will be uncertain. Inflation by then should be going at a good clip, too, and there won't be much of an economic recovery (stagnation + inflation = "stagflation") so there will be a lot of unsettled/pissed off people looking for someone to blame. As I said, I see the DNC/M$M/Big tech already setting the stage to blame Trump.

OTOH, if the "cases" rise but deaths don't (because 80% of the over-65 have already been fully vaccinated) then Trump and the convervatives can do a somewhat undeserved victory dance and focus on the economy. (I suspect deaths will rise some, but not catastrophically because many of the vulnerable have already been vaccinated. And if the Delta variant burns thru the nation between now and 2022, we may achieve herd immunity right in time for the mid-terms.)

Trump is not to blame all by himself, no more than the team coach is all to blame when the local sports team loses. Trump is the face of team Trumptard, but the blame for American failures actually should be shared by the 74,216,154 who voted for him as their fat and funny looking mascot.

MACRON: “I no longer have any intention of sacrificing my life, my time, my freedom and the adolescence of my daughters, as well as their right to study properly, for those who refuse to be vaccinated. This time you stay at home, not us.”

In France, those who do not get vaccinated will no longer be able to go to restaurants, cafés, cinemas and museums and get on airplanes or trains. Alternatively, they will have to submit a negative test, which will no longer be free (€49 for the PCR, €29 for the antigen).

“We cannot make those who have the civic sense to get vaccinated bear the burden of inconvenience. The restrictions will weigh on others, those who for reasons incomprehensible in the country of Louis Pasteur, science and the Enlightenment still hesitate to use the only weapon available against the pandemic, the vaccine.”

Before you forward this to someone else as it was forwarded to me, please note that Macron apparently never said any of that (and has no daughters).

Does that mean you agree with “We cannot make those who have the civic sense to get vaccinated bear the burden of inconvenience. Since America is NOT "the country of Louis Pasteur, science and the Enlightenment" why get vaccinated?

Nope. It does not.

I'm speaking of the facts presented in the article. Not the editorialism.

So, following what you posted, KIKI: If getting vaccinated DOESN'T reduce tranmission (because vaccines are active in deep tissue as opposed to peripheral tissue like nose) then is there is a reason to push for vaccines population-wide?
Because a vaccination program won't stop the spread of Covid, right? But it will stop serious illness and death (for the most part)?

If that's the case, how does the measles vaccine (for example) work to stop epidemics? Doesn't the same logic apply? Or does the measles vaccine just make transmission invisible/inconsequential?

I need a primer on that.

*****

Also, another question, if you may: Once you get infected for real, by the peripheral route, does that mean that you now have a long-term immune response in your periperal tissues as well? (At least, to that particular variant?)

*****

So, tell me where I'm wrong: If people get vaccinated (which offers protection against serious illness and death) and THEN get exposed to the real deal and have to fend it off one way or another, either asymptomatically ... or not ... isn't that kind of the IDEAL way to create longer-lasting, more complete immunity?

I had to look that up because I didn't know.

Measles is interesting immunologically-speaking.

Either infection or vaccination with killed or weakened (attenuated) virus triggers an initial IgM immune response (as is true of infections in general) and an eventual IgG immune response that prevents or reduces disease (ie symptoms) and spread.

https://www.health.qld.gov.au/news-events/news/what-is-measles-why-vac
cinate

"The measles vaccine prevents almost all cases of severe disease."
https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2019/11/skipping-measles-v
accine-tied-triple-risk-disease-spread

"unvaccinated people are about three to four times more infectious than those with measles who have gotten one or two doses"

The vaccine (and I assume infection) also triggers a long-term cell-mediated immunity.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26597262/
"analyses showed low levels of spot-forming cells after stimulation, suggesting the presence of T-cell memory"

It looks like either previous natural infection or vaccination doesn't prevent infection, but does limit disease severity and spread.

The measles vaccine is based on inactivated virus. Maybe that creates a more complete response to the various external proteins of the virus, as opposed to single-protein vaccines.

The OTHER thing that measles infection does is that it wipes out most of your previously-developed immunity to other viral and bacterial diseases, as measured by IgG antibody levels. But vaccination doesn't do that.

Oh... and in what world does 161 Million vaccinated adults count as 68.8% of the US Population being vaccinated?

328 Million Americans. - 23 Million five years and under, - 25 Million under 18 = 280 Million Adults.

161 Million of 280 Million is 57.5%

Oh...

68.8% got "at least one dose".

Why only one shot? What are you waiting for? The apocalypse?

These things aren't epoxy. You can't take your toes out of the water after you've already dipped them in. If you got that first shot you've already lost your choice, so you might as well just embrace it.

Liars.

Nobody's getting the shots anymore and they're throwing them out by the truckload because they have an extremely short shelf life.

There certainly is not 31.6 Million adult Americans right now who have only gotten one shot, because at no time since vaccinations started rolling out have anywhere near 31.6 Million adult Americans gotten vaccinated in a two week period and they've slowed down CONSIDERABLY leading up to the previous two weeks.

They can't even crack 60%, so they're fudging the numbers again.

Its bekuz uv the complexity uv reporting wile an event iz in progress. Wun plase sez 600,000 ded, another sez its 620,000. Vaksination persentajez are dependent on total number uv shots, 1 or 2 required, population size and reporting irregularityz.

It woud be bad enuf if everybody wuz pulling in the same direction, but thanks to Trump and the GoP we hav 1/3 uv the nation pulling the rong direction, another 1/3 ded wate, and 1/3 in agreement that getting sik from C19 iz bad.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Different places use different criteria for stats. JohnsHopkins only reports 'confirmed' cases and 'confirmed' deaths based on some sort of laboratory testing. World-o-Meter uses reported cases and deaths, which varies country by country. /as an example/

Also, over time, definitions themselves have changed. Early on, the CDC only documented CDC testing-confirmed cases and deaths, shortly afterward, other testing-confirmed cases and deaths, and then later allowed clinically diagnosed cases and deaths to be counted.

I also want to point out how the m$m is playing fast and loose with the 'news'. Vaccines are a good example. Originally, there was some scattered, brief notice in the news that vaccine 'effectiveness' was measured against serious illness and death. But you'd have to read a LOT of news very carefully to get that information. There was also some very minor notice that vaccines aren't 100% effective, that there would be breakthrough infections. But again, you'd have to read a lot very thoroughly to pick up on that.

But when the vaccines were reported to be ~95% effective, that part about "SERIOUS ILLNESS AND DEATH ENDPOINTS" was CAREFULLY LEFT OUT, along with the possibility of "BREAKTHROUGH INFECTIONS", along with VARIANTS. People were left to assume effectiveness was against illness, that the percentage ineffective was vanishingly small, and that they were the total solution that would free us all in one fell swoop.

And then, there's the false certainty all of this was reported with.

All this was to herd us into thinking of the vaccines as a certainty that meant that Hallelujah! We are SAVED! by a miracle !!!, and gently stampede us into getting vaccinations when they became available.

And when the real good news about the vaccines being ~95% effective AGAINST ILLNESS (against the initial strain) came out, people were confused about what they thought they initially knew. Wha' the ... ... wait??! Isn't that what they were talking about earlier? That eroded a chunk of trust. When breakthrough infections occurred, it had to be carefully explained that no vaccine is 100%. Not making that explicitly clear up front and having to backpedal after-the-fact eroded another chunk of trust. Then the delta variant came around, with different orgs (again) confusing what the endpoints for vaccine 'effectiveness' were, and reporting a wide variety of fudged figures (vaccinated v fully vaccinated v eligible v population-wide v cases v serious illness v deaths) - most figures included any level of vaccination of eligible people (varies by country). So for example, when Israel was reported as one of the most vaccinated countries on the planet at ~65% vaccination, that figure applied to any level of vaccination of people 16 years or older only, not fully vaccinated people, and not in the entire population. And that inconsistent and highly edited reporting lead to another chunk of trust lost.

BTW, news organizations have all this information; but they're reluctant to report anything different than official sources with official pronouncements.

We were propagandized to come flocking to the vaccines as if they were some kind of magic. That's what all the vaccine-related hidden facts and waffled numbers and false certainty were about.

You can't get people's trust if you constantly lie, and hide facts, and bluff, in order to manipulate them. ALL the facts need to be thoroughly reported and explained, no matter how inconvenient or unhappy. ALL changes of metrics need to be put out there often, so that people know what's going on, instead of leaving room for people to make assumptions when they come across a gap or inconsistency. ALL uncertainty and gaps in information need to be admitted.

Another example is the shifting, contradictory message on masks - masks don't work, they do work but masks that protect the wearer are in short supply, they work to prevent you spreading the infection to someone else ... and so on.

Another is the shifting selection and official messaging of convenient scapegoats for the virus itself: Not China(official)/ China(unofficial) --> China(official)/ not China (unofficial); definitely natural(official)/ possibly lab made(deeply buried below even unofficial status) --> possibly lab made(official)/ natural(unofficial).

Another global problem was the deliberate lack of testing, or the abundance of it, and relating that to reported ''cases' and deaths.

Another big BIG problem was making the topic political. Did Trump do that? Yes. But then so did the dems*, and ruined any chance the 'sides' would or even could communicate with each other.

And so on.

If
you consistently report and explain the facts and their limits - ALL of them - neutrally and without bias

then
when you say that surgical masks help slow virus transmission to others and N95's help prevent infection in yourself, and vaccines provide excellent though not perfect protection against serious illness and death, and that there needs to be a global vaccination effort to eradicate COVID-19 ...
... people will listen to you.

And I'm just talking about everything outside of Fox News. They're a big enough problem in and of themselves, but none of the Lefty shill outlets can ever agree on anything or even keep their stories straight 3 weeks later.

Why anybody would trust these goof balls is beyond my wisdom. They think of you as cattle because you act like cattle.

Maybe the real problem here is that too many of you like being treated as cattle.
