Kenyan U.N. ambassador compares Ukraine's plight to colonial legacy in Africa

Russia's move to recognize breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine as "republics" drew a sharp rebuke from Kenyan U.N. Ambassador Martin Kimani, who used a speech at the U.N. Security Council to recount the perils of clinging to vestiges of empire.

Kimani said Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected diplomacy in favor of military force, which has put the international norm of multilateralism "on its deathbed."

He warned Russia to respect its border with Ukraine, using Africa's colonial past to highlight the dangers of stoking the "embers of dead empires."

"Rather than form nations that looked ever backward into history with a dangerous nostalgia, we chose to look forward to a greatness none of our many nations and peoples had ever known," Kimani said.

Here's a transcript of part of Kimani's speech where he stressed the importance of moving on:

"This situation echoes our history. Kenya and almost every African country was birthed by the ending of empire. Our borders were not of our own drawing. They were drawn in the distant colonial metropoles of London, Paris and Lisbon, with no regard for the ancient nations that they cleaved apart.

Today, across the border of every single African country, live our countrymen with whom we share deep historical, cultural and linguistic bonds.

At independence, had we chosen to pursue states on the basis of ethnic, racial or religious homogeneity, we would still be waging bloody wars these many decades later.

Instead, we agreed that we would settle for the borders that we inherited, but we would still pursue continental political, economic and legal integration. Rather than form nations that looked ever backward into history with a dangerous nostalgia, we chose to look forward to a greatness none of our many nations and peoples had ever known.

We chose to follow the rules of the Organisation of African Unity and the United Nations charter, not because our borders satisfied us, but because we wanted something greater, forged in peace.

We believe that all states formed from empires that have collapsed or retreated have many peoples in them yearning for integration with peoples in neighboring states. This is normal and understandable. After all, who does not want to be joined to their brethren and to make common purpose with them?

However, Kenya rejects such a yearning from being pursued by force. We must complete our recovery from the embers of dead empires in a way that does not plunge us back into new forms of domination and oppression.

We rejected irredentism and expansionism on any basis, including racial, ethnic, religious or cultural factors. We reject it again today.

Kenya registers its strong concern and opposition to the recognition of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent states. We further strongly condemn the trend in the last few decades of powerful states, including members of this Security Council, breaching international law with little regard.

Multilateralism lies on its deathbed tonight. It has been assaulted today as it as it has been by other powerful states in the recent past.

We call on all members to rally behind the Secretary-General in asking him to rally us all to the standard that defends multilateralism. We also call on him to bring his good offices to bear to help the concerned parties resolve this situation by peaceful means.

Let me conclude, Mr. President, by reaffirming Kenya's respect for the territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders."

Kimani didn’t use the West’s past imperialism as an excuse to condone violating Ukraine’s sovereignty. Instead, he was rightly willing to place the blame for any war in Ukraine squarely where it belongs, on Moscow’s neocolonialism and Putin’s need to go down in the history books as the man who tried restoring Russia to its imperial greatness.

There is video of this at https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/feb/21/putin-angry-spectacle-am
ounts-to-declaration-war-ukraine

Sergei Naryshkin, the hawkish head of Russia’s spy service, known for making aggressively anti-western statements, stuttered uncomfortably as Putin grilled him on whether he supported the decision.

“Speak directly!” Putin snapped, twice.

Eventually, when he was able to get the words out, Naryshkin said he supported “the LNR and DNR becoming part of Russia.” Putin told him that wasn’t the subject of the discussion; it was only recognition being weighed up.

Some suggested this might have been a carefully scripted encounter to show the West what other options might be available, but Naryshkin’s genuinely flustered expression suggested otherwise.

It is hard to tell whether or not Putin had decided his plan for Ukraine months ago, or whether he has been making plans on the hop, but it was certainly clear that the decision on recognition had been taken well before this strange, stage-managed event.

There was very little exchange of opinion, and the idea that it was all spontaneous was further undermined by the fact that closeups of the watches of certain participants appeared to suggest that the “live” broadcast had in fact been filmed several hours earlier.

This did not stop Putin specifically emphasising that the event really was a frank exchange of views.

“Every one of you knows, and I specially want to underline it … I did not discuss any of this with you before. I did not ask your opinion before. And this is happening spontaneously, because I wanted to hear your opinions without any preliminary preparation,” he said.

The appearance of Putin just a few hours later with his long, pre-prepared and wide-ranging speech made the claim this was all a real-time decision-making process even more implausible.

Many of Putin’s team give the impression of genuinely believing the propaganda narrative Russia has built to justify its continuing aggression against Ukraine. Valentina Matviyenko, the only woman on the security council, gave an elongated harangue cobbled together from the more outlandish talking points of Russian news bulletins: innocent Russia facing down the nefarious west, which was backing the “genocidal” Kyiv regime.

Not everyone was so enthusiastic: the prime minister, Mikhail Mishustin, spoke briefly and drily, looking visibly uncomfortable. Not willing to let him off the hook without swearing fealty to the decision that was already inevitably on the way, Putin asked him directly whether he supported it; Mishustin mumbled that he did. Everyone was now publicly on record as supporting this move; nobody will be able to weasel out of it later and claim they put up a fight.

The recognition decision answers some questions but others remain. There is a chance Putin may simply recognise the two republics “as they are”. This, after months of apocalyptic scenarios, would probably be privately accepted as a good outcome by Ukraine and the west.

But it seems likely that Putin has much more in mind than simply taking a nibble out of Ukraine’s east and taking formal responsibility for territories he already de facto controlled.

Putin’s final words, that if Kyiv did not stop the violence they would bear responsibility for the “ensuing bloodshed”, were ominous in the extreme. It sounded, quite simply, like a declaration of war.

Just to comment: It is you, SECOND, who is engaging in "whataboutism".

I brought up the dozens (hundreds throughout USA history) of treaties, pacts, agreements, international laws etc that we broke, and you brought up "whataboutCrimea"?

Whatabout JCPOA? Whatabout Open Skies? Short range missiles? Nuclear warheads? Libya,Iran, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan? Whatabout Ukraine? Yugoslavia? How many instances do you want? I can bring up a lot more!

We can whatabout until Christmas, so let's move the discussion in a more productive direction: under what circumstances is it legal, or ethical, to break treaties, contracts etc.?

I know that under international law, a nation has an obligation to repay the IMF even if the debt was incurred and embezzled by a totally different government. OTOH, banks don't seem to have the same obligations to their clients: The BoE, for example, effectively stole Venezuela's gold (which it had placed with the BoE for safekeeping) when the BoE recognized Juan "Random Guy" Guaido as the legitimate head of Venezuela (really???) and made him the official gold owner.

What about the IMF wanting to renegotiate its loan to Ukraine at the beginning of a civil war?

So, again ... under what circumstances is it legal, or ethical, to break a contract, treaty, agreement, pact, or even international law?

I don't know the answer, and I'm not looking for a specific one. Just looking for your opinions, and how you came to your conclusions.

Why not mention the 1,000 broken treaties with Indians as 1,000 justifications to break a treaty with Ukraine? Such a small promise broken: Ukraine gives up its nuclear weapons and the US promises Ukraine it won't regret doing that when Russia (I mean Putin) decides Ukraine really never was a country. It is just the one thousandth and one broken promise by the US government. It is not like Putin might next decide that Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were never countries and were always Russian. Putin would never, never wipe three countries off the map -- bang, bang, bang. While Putin is in the mood, why not wipe that non-NATO Finland off the map?

Anyone aware of the Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia? If I were Putin, I would want to reattach it to the rest of Russia. Is someone in the way? Run them over with the Russian Army. What else is an Army for?

That road trip to Kaliningrad is shortened by 9 hr 24 min (777 km) if Putin starts it more toward the border of Latvia with Russia. Later, Putin crosses into Lithuania. Nothing is stopping Putin from taking that trip, or sending his Army instead, other than worthless paper treaties forbidding taking the trip.

Here is a treaty that forbids Putin making a road trip into Ukraine, but Putin is not the kind of guy who knows how to use google to find treaties he is not supposed to break. Sadly, Putin has a really short memory for what is in treaties:

I find it very unsurprising that Putin is divorced. The guy forgets anniversaries, birthdays, pledges of fidelity to his wife, treaties with Ukraine, you name it, Putin can forget it. There is some other President that was divorced, forget his name, but you never could trust a written promise, even business contracts, from him, just like you can't trust Putin to keep a promise.

Russian President Vladimir Putin may have had an affair with sexy former Kremlin spy Anna Chapman, the latest in a series of rumors about Putin’s numerous affairs, The Daily Mail reports.

Putin’s philandering has apparently gotten so bad that many are blaming it for the disappearance of his wife of 29 years, Lyudmila Putina, from the spotlight. Putin, 59, has been photographed just twice with his wife in the last two years, according to the New York Post.

As usual, you missed the point that Putin does NOT keep promises, neither big ones to his wife nor little promises to NOT invade Ukraine. Putin glibly repudiates both kinds of promises.

Trump voters are the same as Trump. Quick to make promises, slow to keep them, prone to amnesia about the details, glibly downplaying consequences for breaking their promises.

I find it hilarious Putin wants assurances his demands will be met when the list of signed agreements, treaties he has violated is endless. I would love, if the next time this is pointed out by one of our diplomats, they end by looking into the camera and asking Putin directly, what good are assurances signed by both parties if one of those parties cannot be trusted to honor them? When one to those parties has lied again and again and violated so many of his declared pledges?

They won't but they really should. I'd also put the same question to Signym. I'm sure though Sig will respond with something about the American Indian. You know SECOND, whataboutism.

I find it perfectly predictable that Donald Trump has hailed Russian President Vladimir Putin as “savvy” and called his move on Ukraine “genius” in a new interview.

Mr Trump initially broke his silence on the Russia-Ukraine crisis on Tuesday morning through a tweet posted by his spokesperson in which he claimed that his relationship with Putin would have prevented the crisis.

Trump doubles down on ‘insane’ ‘adulation’ of Putin

The former president of the United States doubled down on his praise for Vladimir Putin and criticism of Joe Biden on Wednesday as the US and Russia appear to be experiencing a major breakdown of relations amid Russia’s aggression in Crimea and towards Ukraine.

Donald Trump issued an early-morning statement on Wednesday which crowed that the Russian president was playing his US counterpart “like a drum”, seemingly ignoring the criticism he has faced over the last day regarding his overly-complimentary view of Mr Putin.

“Putin is playing Biden like a drum. It is not a pretty thing to watch!” said the former president in one of his tweet-like statements issued by his office.

Word by Word and Between the Lines: A Close Look at Putin’s Speech

In an impassioned address about Ukraine on Monday, Vladimir V. Putin, Russia’s president, spun a narrative whose implications sprawl well beyond his stated purpose of recognizing the independence of two Ukrainian territories held by Moscow-backed separatists.

Mr. Putin’s speech was awash with hard-line Russian nationalism, angry paranoia toward the West, baseless claims of Ukrainian aggression, a sense of lost imperial pride on the verge of reclamation and, most of all, invocations of history, much of it distorted or fabricated.

While his comments might have sounded rambling to Western ears, Mr. Putin may in fact have been articulating what amounted to a calculated series of justifications for a further invasion of Ukraine aimed at the Russian public, whose support he will need to maintain it. What follows is a concise annotation of several key passages that convey Mr. Putin’s overt and implied case for war.

'Paranoia" about the west??
Like we haven't toppled 50 nations since WWII and been angling to break Russia apart since then?

Heck, all we have to do is go back a page or two where YOU called for breaking Russia apart. But, you'll fling ANYthing against the wall, won't you? I would certainly never expect deeply held convictions or honesty ... or even consistency! ... from you! Just permanent, visceral hate.

You don't seriously expect us to swallow your bullshit, do you?

The last time the USA stole somebody's land was the Spanish-American War in 1896. In 2022, Putin is stealing somebody's land. Signym vaguely pointing to American history really does not justify Putin's theft. Even Putin can't justify his thieving, judging by the words he is using.

Putin's lamebrain justification presented as a "fact": "So, I will start with the fact that modern Ukraine was entirely created by Russia or, to be more precise, by Bolshevik, Communist Russia. This process started practically right after the 1917 revolution, and Lenin and his associates did it in a way that was extremely harsh on Russia — by separating, severing what is historically Russian land." You'd have to be pretty stupid to believe what Putin is saying, but he knows his audience.

Mr. Putin is repeating his longstanding argument that Ukraine’s borders are an artificial creation of Soviet planners who unjustly cordoned rightful Russian land within the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

In reality, internal Soviet borders reflected centuries-old cultural and political divides, as well as what Moscow’s own census takers found to be an ethnic Ukrainian majority throughout that territory, including in what is now eastern Ukraine.

Mr. Putin’s comments, which build on his justification for annexing Crimea in 2014, imply a mandate to assert Russian sovereignty over part or all of eastern Ukraine, as well, even if for now he is only recognizing the independence of the Moscow-backed separatists who control parts of it.

His repeated references to Ukraine as artificial, and his past claims that “Ukraine is not even a state,” as he said in 2008, suggest he may also be leaving himself the option of declaring all of Ukraine to be a historical invention, serving to justify a wider invasion.

Comrade Signym sounds just like Putin. Whining and crying because of the fall of the Soviet Union forty fifty years ago. I’m left reflecting on all the years here putting up with Signym posting lies and being judgmental towards anybody who wasn’t perfect in the west. Towards any action taken by the west that was taken for legit reasons but allowed her to pick at it because of collateral damage. Any action, which includes the inner workings of America. All the years of her smugly defending Putin. All the years of her touting him as a world leader to be admired and even imitated while trashing everybody else.

It’s all led to this day. The day when she can no longer make any claims to being anything other than another Putin thug.Another of Putin’s disinformation trolls that care nothing for world peace or the betterment of mankind.

Putin attacks Ukraine after months saying he had no plans to do so

Kharkiv, Ukraine — CBS News senior foreign correspondent Holly Williams said that after weeks of warnings from Washington that a Russian invasion of Ukraine was imminent, when it came down to it, there was almost no direct warning before missiles started falling on Wednesday evening.

Just minutes after Vladimir Putin announced his country's military operation, Williams and her team heard the thuds of what they assumed to be missile strikes close to their location in the eastern city of Kharkiv, only around 30 miles from the Russian border.

Putin said Wednesday night, that his government's plans "do not include an occupation," but given that Russia denied for months any plans to invade Ukraine at all, it's not clear how much faith could be put in his statement.

Signym still insists that Clinton would start a nuclear war and how bad that would be. When Putin actually threatens nuclear war comrade signym says nothing. Any claims now by posters past and present that she isn’t a Polish Russian Collaborator only shows complicity.

Russia has had a long line of loonies in charge (remember Boris Yeltsin? Ha-ha! Loony as Trump!), but the Russian people never did wake up before now. I doubt they will this time, either.

Here is one of those Russian loonies (and he happens to be someone that Putin has praised, over and over, as did Joseph Stalin):

Contemporary sources present disparate accounts of Ivan's complex personality. He was described as intelligent and devout but also prone to paranoia, rage, and episodic outbreaks of mental instability that increased with age. In one fit of anger, he murdered his eldest son and heir, Ivan Ivanovich, and he might also have caused the miscarriage of the latter's unborn child. This left his younger son, the politically ineffectual Feodor Ivanovich, to inherit the throne, a man whose rule and subsequent childless death directly led to the end of the Rurikid dynasty and the beginning of the Time of Troubles.

Admitting publicly that bribery was usual business practice in Russia, Mr. Pacolli confirmed in early-December 1999 that he had guaranteed five credit cards for Mr. Yeltsin's wife, Naina, and two daughters, Tatyana and Yelena. President Yeltsin resigned a few weeks later on 31 December 1999, appointing Vladimir Putin as his successor. President Putin's first decree as president was lifelong immunity from prosecution for Yeltsin. (In a properly run country, Yeltsin would have been jailed. Trump hasn't been jailed, either, but prosecutors don't have the excuse that Trump has lifelong immunity.)

As Russian bombs pound Ukraine, and its soldiers pour into Ukrainian territory, the question on everyone’s mind is: Why? What does Russia hope to accomplish with a massive invasion?

Russian President Vladimir Putin gave his version of an answer in his televised speech Wednesday night, announcing a “special military operation” whose “goal is to protect people who have been abused by the genocide of the Kyiv regime for eight years.” Ultimately: “We will strive for the demilitarization and de-Nazification of Ukraine, as well as bringing to justice those who committed numerous bloody crimes against civilians.”

On its face, this sounds detached from reality. There is no ongoing genocide in Ukraine. The Ukrainian government itself is not even close to a Nazi regime. The country’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is Jewish; he speaks proudly of how his Jewish grandfather fought against Hitler’s army.

But with this seemingly absurd rhetoric, Putin is laying the propaganda groundwork for the overthrow of Ukraine’s government.

US intelligence has warned that Putin aims to topple Ukraine’s government, round up prominent Ukrainians “to be killed or sent to camps,” and install a puppet regime in Kyiv. When Putin speaks of “de-Nazification” and “bringing [Ukrainians] to justice,” this is exactly what he means.

It’s possible to make sense of Putin’s unhinged ranting about genocide and the de-Nazification of Ukraine. The idea of Ukraine as a Nazi state is deeply rooted in the Russian nationalist narrative.

“It goes back to World War II, when Ukrainian partisans took the Nazi side against the Soviets,” Gunitsky explains. “The narrative in Russia today is that these are all neo-Nazis running the show.” Ukraine is the inheritor of a neo-Nazi tradition that contributed to untold Russian deaths during World War II.

Putin’s claims of “genocide” in Ukraine reflect Russian nationalism. Ukraine has a large ethnic Russian population; they are potential victims of an ethnic cleansing campaign by the neo-Nazi Ukrainian government.

“The formation of an ethnically pure Ukrainian state, aggressive towards Russia, is comparable in its consequences to the use of weapons of mass destruction against us,” as Putin put it in his 2021 essay. “As a result of such a harsh and artificial division of Russians and Ukrainians, the Russian people in all may decrease by hundreds of thousands or even millions.”

https://www.vox.com/2022/2/24/22948944/putin-ukraine-nazi-russia-speec
h-declare-war

Putin is such a wussy to say "the Russian people in all may decrease by hundreds of thousands or even millions." Putin should go big and forcefully say Millions of Russians will die in Ukraine's Death Camps. And then Putin should frown angrily. Maybe shake his fist on TV. I'd be totally convinced if I were Russian and Putin lies with confidence.

Snake Island: Soldiers' defiant last words as Russian warship targets them

According to a purported audio exchange, as the Russians approached Snake Island, also known as Zmiinyi Island, the Russian officer says: "This is a military warship. This is a Russian military warship. I suggest you lay down your weapons and surrender to avoid bloodshed and needless casualties. Otherwise, you will be bombed."

A Ukrainian soldier responds: "Russian warship, go f*** yourself."

Those were the final known words heard from the island.

All 13 Ukrainian defenders were killed in a Russian bombardment Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

"All border guards died heroically but did not give up. They will be awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine posthumously," Zelensky said.

Putin made clear his true target is America’s “empire of lies,” and he threatened “consequences you have never faced in your history” for “anyone who tries to interfere with us.”

Putin may have lofty ambitions, including actually running Ukraine, but all he really needs to do is either kill or chase the President of Ukraine out of the country. Then all Russian troops can withdraw. If Ukraine wants to elect a new President, Putin prevents an election from being held, which is easy. Putin only gets into a guerrilla war if he tries to do something more complicated than keep Ukraine out of NATO.

I think the present government of Ukraine is already doomed, but in the aftermath the rest of the world needs to be harsh with Russia, not go back to business as usual, or else Putin will move on to absorbing the three NATO members (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) into the Russian Federation. If Putin tries because the World kept right on trading with Russia after he murdered the government of Ukraine, NATO will have to re-read its charter: Article 5 The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all . . .

Russia has warned neighboring Finland on Friday of "serious military and political" repercussions if the Scandanavian nation opts to join NATO following the invasion of Ukraine.

Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said during a weekly briefing that a Finnish addition to NATO could have "detrimental consequences."

Finnish prime minister Sanna Marin said on Thursday that the debate within Finland on NATO membership "will change" following the start of a war in Ukraine.

Both Marin and Finland's president Sauli Niinisto strongly condemned Russia's attack on Ukraine.

"Despite prior warnings, this morning has come as a shock for all of us and our deepest feelings are with Ukrainian people," Niinisto said.

Niinisto ruled out the possibility of Finland reacting to the events by immediately applying for NATO membership.

"(In Finland) we are now seeing quick comments for applying today and joining tomorrow. These sensitive reactions are understandable but cannot really work in the real world," he said.

More Republicans have a negative view of Joe Biden than of Vladimir Putin.

92% of Republicans had a negative view of Biden while 81% had a negative view of Putin.

Trump has repeatedly praised Putin and criticised Biden, on Thursday adapting a favorite golfing metaphor to claim the Russian leader was playing his counterpart “like a drum”.

In July 2018, at a summit in Helsinki, Trump and Putin conducted a meeting behind closed doors and with no close aides. What was discussed is not known.

Trump was impeached in 2020, for attempting to blackmail Ukraine, withholding military aid while requesting dirt on Biden. At trial in the Senate, only one Republican, Mitt Romney, voted to convict. The Utah senator also voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial, for inciting the insurrection at the US Capitol on 6 January 2021.

Putin urged Ukrainian soldiers to seize power from their civilian leaders — a democratically elected government Putin derided as “a gang of drug addicts and neo-Nazis who’ve holed up in Kyiv and taken the entire Ukrainian nation hostage.”

Putin’s dark rhetoric about a government led by a Jewish president, Volodymyr Zelensky, who was elected in a landslide in 2019, is plainly delusional, but it was echoed that night on the state television channels that give him a stranglehold over Russia’s airwaves.

In contrast to Putin telling crazy lies from a TV studio far from the fighting, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky was standing in an instantly recognizable location, outside the president’s office on Bankova Street in central Kyiv, flanked by his closest advisers. Zelensky spoke calmly into his phone.

“Good evening everyone. The leader of the party is here,” Zelensky said, showing Davyd Arakhamia, who leads the president’s political party, Servant of the People. “The head of the presidential office is here,” he said, of Andriy Yermak, an adviser who tried to fend off demands from Rudy Giuliani for Zelensky to open sham investigations into Joe Biden in 2019, as then-President Donald Trump withheld military aid to Ukraine.

After noting that his prime minister, Denys Shmyhal, and another adviser, Mykhailo Podolyak, were also there, Zelensky brought the phone back to himself and said, “The president is here.”

“We are all here. Our soldiers are here. The citizens of our country are here,” Zelensky said. “We are all here protecting our independence, our country, and it will continue to be this way. Glory to our defenders. Glory to our heroes. Glory to Ukraine.”
