New FAA cardiac health rules not prompted by COVID-19 shots

CLAIM: The Federal Aviation Administration loosened the requirements that airline pilots must meet for cardiac health because a large number have heart damage caused by the COVID-19 vaccines.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. In October, the FAA widened the acceptable parameters it uses when screening pilots for a specific heart condition, the agency said in a statement to The Associated Press. However, the FAA explained that this change was made in response to new scientific evidence about the condition from its cardiology consultants, not adverse reactions to COVID-19 vaccines.

Trump’s Policies Resulted In The Unnecessary Deaths Of Hundreds Of Thousands Of Americans: Lancet Report

Decades of policy failures that the Trump Administration exacerbated resulted in more than 450,000 unnecessary American deaths in 2018, with tens of thousands of additional deaths in other years also attributable to President Donald Trump's actions, according to a report published Thursday from a commission of health experts convened by the British medical journal The Lancet.

The Lancet launched the commission on Public Policy and Health in the Trump Era in April 2017, tasking the group with chronicling the administration’s actions.

The commission's analysis found that 461,000 fewer Americans would have died in 2018 if the United States’ death rate had been equivalent to those of the other G-7 nations.

The 49-page report also concludes that Trump’s “hostility” to environmental regulations (including the rollback of at least 84 separate environmental and workplace protections) significantly worsened pollution, resulting in more than 22,000 extra deaths in 2019 alone.

This article contains spoilers for The Last of Us, Episode 9, “Look for the Light.”

For its entire first season, The Last of Us attempts to sell the audience (and one of the show’s two protagonists, the teenage Ellie) on a promise: that her immunity to the Cordyceps fungus means that her freeze-dried and then crushed-into-powder brain is the main ingredient for a vaccine to save humanity. However, it isn’t until the series’ final episode, “Look for the Light,” that we hear about the actual plan to make that cure from her brain. . . .

After interviewing many scientists, long story short: Ellie doesn’t need to die to save humanity—in fact, it’d be better if she didn’t. Real-life science would preclude the need for Joel’s rampage (to save Ellie's life from the Firefly gang's insane vaccine manufacturing process), a morally queasy deed that acts as both the culmination of Season 1’s plot and the instigating incident that defines the tone of the show’s future. But in a way, this fact-check of the show’s science only further proves the show’s artistic success.

All season long, The Last of Us has depicted a humanity that’s barely worth saving, where, though there are some exemplary people, nearly every attempt at banding together is corrupt and every solitary leader (and beloved gruff guardian) is some varying degree of murderous. The Fireflies’ plan being an awful one fits the show’s worldview perfectly. If you look at the Fireflies’ idea as ridiculous and ill-informed, as these scientists do, this ending is even grimmer. Living through this pandemic has bred a climate of desperation so strong that the hope that something could be the ticket out is more than enough to ignore ethical considerations to try the most fanciful plan. Marlene doesn’t regret killing her friend’s daughter for a chance at a vaccine that’s not likely to work, and Joel doesn’t regret killing the Fireflies to stop it from happening, even though there’s the slimmest chance it could. “Look for the Light” simply drives home the idea that The Last of Us isn’t about surviving a terrifying reality, but rather clinging to the dreams, and people, we use to cope with existing within it.

New DNA analysis adds strong evidence for natural origin of COVID-19 virus

The Atlantic reports https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2023/03/covid-origins-rese
arch-raccoon-dogs-wuhan-market-lab-leak/673390
/ that three researchers have performed a re-analysis of swabs taken at the Huanan Market in Wuhan early in the COVID-19 pandemic. The original analysis, done last year by a Chinese team, drew no conclusions about the origin of the virus, but the new analysis strongly suggests that the virus developed naturally and then jumped to humans from raccoon dogs:

A new analysis of genetic sequences collected from the market shows that raccoon dogs being illegally sold at the venue could have been carrying and possibly shedding the virus at the end of 2019....The genetic sequences were pulled out of swabs taken in and near market stalls around the pandemic’s start. They represent the first bits of raw data that researchers outside of China’s academic institutions and their direct collaborators have had access to.

....Within about half a day of downloading the data from GISAID, [the researchers] discovered that several market samples that tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 were also coming back chock-full of animal genetic material—much of which was a match for the common raccoon dog. Because of how the samples were gathered, and because viruses can’t persist by themselves in the environment, the scientists think that their findings could indicate the presence of a coronavirus-infected raccoon dog in the spots where the swabs were taken.

“This is a really strong indication that animals at the market were infected,” said Seema Lakdawala, a virologist at Emory University who wasn’t involved in the research. “There’s really no other explanation that makes any sense.”

This year 14 percent of adults have received a dose of the new vaccine formulation that became available in September — compared to 28 percent who have gotten a flu shot.

More than 80 percent of all Americans, and more than 90 percent of adults, received at least one dose of the vaccines, remarkable penetration in a country where less than half of people get their flu shot every year.

Ever since that first shot, the public’s interest in subsequent Covid-19 vaccines has been steadily dropping. Less than 70 percent of the US finished their initial two-dose vaccine series. Less than 20 percent of the country received last year’s bivalent booster shot.

Pfizer said in September that it expected about one in four Americans to get the latest shot. Though there is still time, current vaccination rates are well short of that goal. It is an open question how the for-profit pharmaceutical manufacturers who produce these vaccines will respond to what the market is telling them.

My theory is that "1kiki" and "SignyM" are front names for Russians posting from Moscow.

In two months it will be two years since "1kiki" posted anything: http://www.fireflyfans.net/profileshow.aspx?u=41207

It has only been hours since "SignyM" last posted:

"SignyM" would post even more often, but only if Putin would pay a higher wage.

I called bullshit when JSF said that and I'll call it bullshit if you're saying it now.

If Sigs and Kiki are the same person, she'd basically have to have split personality disorder in order to balance the differences between the two.

It's not as if Sigs and I have never argued about anything before, even specifically about Covid itself, but Kiki was on another world with her stance compared to Sigs regarding Covid and the vaccine and even the mandates. Our posts to each other devolved into borderline hate-posting at each other once we dug our heels in on the Covid topics.

All the while, Sigs was somewhere in the middle, agreeing with Kiki on some aspects of Covid/Vaccines and agreeing with me on others.

Basically, she thought I was full of shit when I said Covid wasn't dangerous at all, but she also disagreed with Kiki and took my side when I railed against Biden*'s tyrannical mandate that was costing people their jobs and livelihood.

Bottom line, regarding today's discussion, Ted is an idiot twice over. Once for getting his 15th booster shot today and gloating about it. And twice for claiming that Kiki is dead because she didn't get her boosters.

Who knows? Kiki might not be with us anymore, sad as that would be. But it certainly wasn't because she missed a booster.

Covid ‘miracle drug' that Donald Trump urged people to take killed 17,000

A Covid "miracle drug" that Donald Trump urged Americans to take has killed nearly 17,000 people, according to a new study.

In the beginning of the pandemic, scientists put their hopes in anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) as a means to treat the deadly virus.

One scientist even called the drug a "magic bullet" against Covid.

In April 2020, then President Trump advocated for Americans to take the drug and spoke of the "miracle" recovery made by a woman who took it.

Trump said in a Covid Taskforce briefing at the time: "The nice part is, it's been around for a long time...if things don't go as planned, it's not going to kill anybody."

What worked to stop the spread of COVID-19?

https://jabberwocking.com/what-worked-to-stop-the-spread-of-covid-19/

A recent paper by Christopher Ruhm of the University of Virginia quantifies the value of various efforts to combat COVID-19 in the US.
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama-health-forum/fullarticle/2821581

The headline result is a composite score for different states based on what kinds of restrictions they imposed, but I found the detailed national breakdown more interesting. Here are his estimates of how various interventions affected death rates:

By comparing excess death rates in different states with different restrictions in place, Ruhm estimates how effective each one was. The results are pretty simple:

• Vaccines work great.

• Mask mandates work OK.

• Prohibitions on mask and vaccine mandates are terrible.

Nothing else has much impact. The effects are all fairly small and in many cases aren't even statistically significant. Restaurant closures are minimally effective, but probably not worth it (though it's almost certainly a good idea for wait staff to wear masks).

This is one study, and its results are hardly the last word. Still, it's striking that an awful lot of research has now been done and it mostly finds that hardly anything makes much of a difference. Masks help a little bit, but aside from that it's vaccines or nothing.

Note, however, that there are several interventions that weren't measured in this study: social distancing, better ventilation, UV light, and remote work. All of these are things that likely have some impact.

14.9 million excess deaths associated with the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021

re-associated-with-the-covid-19-pandemic-in-2020-and-2021

A new study estimates that COVID-19 vaccines helped avert 19.8 million deaths across the globe during the first year after vaccination campaigns were initiated.

The study found that vaccine inequity resulted in a disproportionately higher number of deaths prevented by vaccination in high-income nations than in lower-income nations.

Several low-income nations failed to meet the World Health Organization (WHO) target of vaccinating 40% of their populations and achieving this target could have doubled the number of lives saved in those regions.

I scanned the article. It wasn't clear to me whether “strong" measures had its effect primarily on people over 60, meaning that measures imposed on everyone benefitted a narrow subset of population, or whether they benefitted everyone.

If so, a statewide vaccine mandate for everyone doesn't make sense.

In that case, if someone in a high risk group voluntarily risks their health it shouldn't be up to the state to save them from themselves either. I imagine the state stepping in when they significantly risk the health of others.

The state shouldn't be obliged to spend tremendous resources saving someone who put themselves at severe risk. For example, there are certain sports that should be utterly uninsurable: base jumping. Helicopter skiing.

If someone gets Covid and needs ICU- level care, but they haven't been vaccinated, maybe they should be made comfortable in a quiet part of the hospital, given routine care (saline IV, nasal oxygen, fever reducers and pain killers) but that's it.

Oh. I get it now. Thanks Ted.

It's a vacene.

Not a vaccine.

It certainly wasn't a vaccine. I don't know what a vacene is, but maybe you have a point there.

Ron DeSantis: Why Did "Mind-Your-Own-Business" Tim Walz Set Up A Snitch Hotline During Covid?

"Then why did you set up a snitch hotline for neighbors to report their neighbors for violating your draconian Covid restrictions?" DeSantis wondered. "That's not minding your own damn business. That's government overreach."

That's a good question, Ron. We've all heard the audio recording of that hotline over the last 24 hours.

Pretty fucking Orwellian if you ask me.

Did the CDC recommend school closures? NO!

By Kevin Drum | November 24, 2024 – 6:30 pm

In a word, no. Even at the very beginning of the pandemic, the CDC said only that schools might want to close depending on local transmission rates and known outbreaks—but even then said there was little evidence it helped more generally. After that they became positively evangelistic in their recommendations for schools to stay open (but to do it safely).

Here are excerpts from four CDC documents published during the first year of COVID. Not media or talking head perspectives. These are the CDC's actual words.

March 12, 2020: "There is a role for school closure" in response to outbreaks of COVID. However:

Short to medium closures do not impact the epi curve of COVID-19 or available health care measures (e.g., hospitalizations).... Other mitigation efforts (e.g., handwashing, home isolation) have more impact on both spread of disease and health care measures. In other countries, those places who closed school (e.g., Hong Kong) have not had more success in reducing spread than those that did not (e.g., Singapore).

July 23, 2020: “It is critically important for our public health to open schools this fall,” said CDC Director Dr. Robert R. Redfield. “The CDC resources released today will help parents, teachers and administrators make practical, safety-focused decisions as this school year begins.”... The resources and tools made available today support how to open schools safely by promoting behaviors that prevent spread, [etc.].

August 1, 2020: While opening schools—like opening any building or facility—does pose a risk for the spread of COVID-19, there are many reasons why opening schools in the fall of 2020 for in-person instruction is important.

• Schools play a critical role in the wellbeing of communities

• Schools provide critical instruction and academic support

• Social and emotional health of students can be enhanced through schools

• Mental health of students can be fostered through school supports and services

• Continuity of other special services is important for student success

February 12, 2021: K–12 schools should be the last settings to close after all other mitigation measures in the community have been employed, and the first to reopen when they can do so safely. Schools should be prioritized for reopening and remaining open for in-person instruction over nonessential businesses and activities.

If the CDC didn’t close schools during COVID, who did?

By Kevin Drum | November 25, 2024 – 9:21 am

https://jabberwocking.com/if-the-cdc-didnt-close-schools-during-covid-
who-did
/

Yesterday I posted a brief item noting that the CDC never recommended that schools be closed during COVID. In fact, by July 2020, shortly before the new school year was about to start, they were strongly recommending that schools open in the fall.

So why did so many schools close? The answer is that the decisions were mostly made by states and local school districts, partly based on CDC guidance about how to reopen safely. To that extent the CDC did play a role, though probably one that even its critics wouldn't take issue with. Their safety guidance was generally pretty solid.

More important was probably public opinion. It's easy to forget what things were like when COVID was new, but people were scared and most parents didn't want schools to reopen quickly. Here's a KFF poll from July 2020, just before the start of the new school year:

Of the people polled, 63% wanted to open schools later rather than sooner. 71% said schools needed more resources and weren't ready to open. And 70% were worried their child would get COVID if they returned to school.

The results leaned even more heavily toward closure among low-income parents—which makes sense since they were most likely to live in areas where schools were likely to have trouble reopening safely.

Other polls at the same time showed similar results. In one poll, parents favored closure over reopening by 54-36%. In an EdChoice poll, 69% said they'd enroll their kids in distance learning if their school offered it. In an Ipsos poll, only 16% favored full reopening. An S360 poll gave the same result in California.

Most polls also showed noticeable differences between Democrats and Republicans. Democrats consistently took COVID more seriously and were more likely to favor keeping schools closed, so it's no surprise that Democratic states and cities were the most likely to close schools. They were doing what their constituents wanted.

And despite what we all think now, these policies were relatively popular at the time. An Ipsos poll in late 2021, after a year of COVID and closures, showed that 75% of parents felt their local schools had done a pretty good job dealing with the pandemic:

The moral of all this is not to let your memory play tricks on you. It might seem obvious now that schools should have remained open, but parents at the time didn't all agree. Most of them were worried about possible learning loss—they weren't naive about that—but still favored caution about sending their kids back to classrooms. Under the circumstances, it's hardly surprising that local school boards did what the parents wanted.

POSTSCRIPT: As it happens, I was skeptical of school closings from the start. But even now it's not an open-and-shut case. The danger of sending kids back to school was probably small, but the evidence suggests the ill effects of closing schools was probably small too. There was significant learning loss, but it doesn't appear to be related to school closures. Everyone suffered equally, whether they attended classes in person or stayed home. See here, here, and here. It was something more broadly about the pandemic that caused learning loss, not distance learning.

In other words, a cost-benefit analysis of school closures is tricky even now.
