Spinoff topic from the Vaccinations thread on how we can achieve better medicine. Ultimately, the goal is better health, so I figure we can skip to the end. It is not just about medicine.

This guy makes a very persuasive case for just a little more exercise.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

Due to transportation difficulties, I have recently begun walking to work 4 days out of the week. I think it's the best thing that's ever happened to me in terms of health. I actually feel better.

Walking is free. Doesn't require a drive to the gym, etc.

My concern when I watched that video was that they warned against 6 hours of TV. Who spends 6 hours in front of the TV? But then I realized I easily spend 6 hours a day in front of the computer.

Have to start making a point out of walking and exercise, even if it is to place it in the consciousness of my kids.

Another easy and free thing to do to improve health is to drink plenty of water. People always say that, but it is so easy to forget and ignore.

Hello,

One thing to try? When parking your car (assuming you drive) park it as far from your destination as possible. You might add a couple hundred yards to your daily walking total by doing this alone.

DREAMTROVE

My dad had a similar experience many years ago. He never lost the weight, but I think it put him in much better shape.

My doctor told me when I had insomnia to get four hours of exercise per day, which he based on the cavemen. His reasoning was that we evolved as machines in motion, not sedentary, and while we ha muscles to do the work of running the machine, some processes logically were dependent on gravity and motion because these would be forces always present during the evolution of the species.

Later, I was working on a project with a friend who is a doctor, and he said that he had separated his patients into the walkers, being those who walked (the average for the group was 3 miles per day) as a lifelong habit, and those who did not, and had compiled some statistics on their health, much like the ones in the video. The most remarkable to him was how the percentage of walkers as a portion of the total patient population increased with age, until the age of 90, at which point the walkers represented 100% of the population. He attributed this to attrition of the non-walking population.

The only thing to jar the statistics at all was the handicapped, where he said the gap was more pronounced, and it was those who swim that did better, and those who were chair-bound and unable to leave the chair or simply didn't leave it, who did worse.

His overall recommendation was that I incorporate into my routine walks which would total 3 miles per day or about 45 minutes, and that someone with a disability include swimming instead, of about 1/2 hour to an hour.

I implemented this idea, but I have noticed a shortfall, as at the time I was living in a town where I had placed many of my activities, and the total walking for those was 3 miles, but if I do it for where I live now, it is far less than three miles, and I see that I failed to adjust my lifestyle to my location.

After posting about walking, it's very ironic that I should injure my ankle. Ow. I still have christmas shopping to do, I must hobble through.

I find walking boring if I don't have someone or some thing to listen to, or somewhere interesting to go. And the idea of driving somewhere, just so you can then go walking...seems counter productive. But that's just me. There are other ways to get my cardio, but what's important is to do something.

That's pretty funny. Drink, drink the water now without fear my child. 'Cause once you reach 50+ you won't require any water to pee like a waterfall every five minutes.

Hello Dream,

Try not to aggravate your ankle. Perhaps make use of the electric scooters provided at some shops if you can, to limit the amount of damage you will do to your ankle.

An Ipod and audio books work well during a walk.

Anthony,

Thanks, but fortunately for me my shopping is done. I just took some aspirin and finished it off so I can now rest through the holidays.

It's the same thing I got in my other ankle earlier this year, it's called tarsal tunnel syndrome, and it's like carpal tunnel syndrome, only for ankles. It feels like walking on knives.

S'funny, walking is both benefit and bane to me - for while if I didn't keep active I'd prolly wind up with a bad case of donut butt, doing so is quite painful and over time damages my bad leg, or whats left of it, which is slow to heal at all and a magnet for other problems due to amputation and damage.

Believe me, I ponder the original non-disneyfied tale of the little mermaid and the terrible, terrible price she paid for those legs quite often.

But I AM something of a hardass about it - I tend to park farther away cause I do not, will not, have a handicapped plate or sticker on my car due to refusal to lump myself in with a collective that's driving is SO bad, generally, almost universally, that the mere sight of one makes me look for a way around or away from them before the INEVITABLE stupid/dangerous behavior, I am not whatever kidding either, I dunno what it is, but almost NONE of them around here can drive safely!

And I hate, hate, hate them damn electric scooter widgets, if I absolutely MUST use a wheelchair, I'll take the manual thanks, and don't even THINK of putting your hands on those grips, cause I'll get downright snappy about it, unless you're Alice or Wendy - the former out of personal respect and longstanding obligation, and the latter cause I really don't wanna get my ass kicked.
(She said if I didn't let her I was gonna need more than a wheelchair....)

Alas, altering my diet even to extremes has made no affect whatever on the pudge that middle age has dumped on me, and frankly there's enough else wrong that I might as well enjoy myself, meh.

ETA: I do also get snippy about Michiganders poor habits like starting/warming up the SUV to drive 50 friggin yards to the mailbox, that's nuts.

One of the sadder things I've seen in Vegas, any touristy place, or hell - just a grocery store, is those damn hover'rounds / lil' rascals , for folks who have become so obese, they've lost use of their legs for any measurable time. I'm assuming they can stand, briefly, should the need arise. But we're not talking the elderly, or those have lost a foot, or such.

If it were just one or two, randomly sighted through out the day, sure... I get it. But my god, they're everywhere ! I'm sure these folks were the inspiration for the futuristic chubs in WALL-E, who float around on their hove chairs, too rotund to stand and use their obsolete cankles.
