Misunderstood moments in the series or movie

I came across a few things I misunderstood and felt pretty stupid when I finally fiqured out what was going on:

1. When River cuts Jayne at the beginning of "Ariel" I thought she did it because she knew he was going to betray them. After watching it for about the fifth time I realized the shirt he was wearing had a Blue Sun logo and thats exactly where she cut him.

2. In "War Stories" Wash and Zoe are arguing and Wash says: "What this marriage needs is one less husband". I was in shock for about ten minutes because I thought he meant they should split up. It was much later in the episode I realized he was talking about Mal being a third leg.

3. In the BDM River is locked up in the pantry and suddenly wakes up. Jayne immediately goes in to take her for a "nice shuttle ride". At first I thought she had given him a psychic nudge to get him in there. Since she has never displayed this ability I'm now of the belief that she woke up because she sensed his intent.
To be honest I'm still not sure about this one.

So anyone else have any duh-huh moments?

Another instance in River's anti-Blue Sun behavior is in "Shindig." If you look closely, the crackers and cans that she's laying waste to all have the Blue Sun logo on them. Hmm...

I misunderstood (literally) one of Summer's lines in the BDM on first viewing. It's in the locker scene with Simon. River says (I thought):

"But I'll show them! Oh God..."

It seemed sort of strange -- this broken, handcuffed girl seemingly thumbing her nose at the crew. Nyah nyah, I'll show you!

But I mis-heard the line. What she actually says is:

"What I'll show them! Oh God..."

In other words, she's becoming aware of the Miranda secret, and that it's about to be revealed. She's whimpering because she doesn't want the others to have to go through the pain she's been enduring. Hence her followup line: "Things are going to get much much worse."

What a difference a single word can make!

By the way, I'm not the only one to make this mistake. It's wrong in the subtitles too! The correct line is given in the script in the Visual Companion.

Actually I always assumed that Wash meant that he thought Zoe was being more of the 'man'(as in the strong one who protects, fights, etc) of the relationship. And he, being the physical man, wanted her to be more like a woman.

I just didn't understand in the BDM why Simon was still so uptight about River. She's proven herself competent (for the most part) and Mal has proven himself over and over again. In 'Bushwacked' when he doesn't give them up, in 'Ariel' and 'Safe' when he comes back for them.

Remember that time has passed between the series and the BDM, about 8 months if I recall.

Perhaps something happened during that time to make Simon more conscious of Mal's handling of them. There might have been close calls with the Alliance, more bounty hunters like Jubal Early.

We'll never know... 'til the second series airs in 2007 (dropping massive hint to the studios!).

There's more to this scene in the script (visual Companion) River has been awake. She was in cuffs. She has climbed up to the light, pealed back a piece of hard wire covering the lights, and used it to pick her cuffs. Hence the whole no cuffs after that scene. and why she's up by the light. It was more than, "ambush Jayne 'fore he throws me in a shuttle." It's possible Jayne started towards the pantry because he heard her moving.

hmmm, i guess i never realized that people had such different interpretations of that line between Wash and Zoe. I had always assumed that he was talking about Mal when he says one less husband. For a split second(literally), i thought he meant himself, but i quickly realized that he was talking about Mal. That makes the most sense to me. He's angry with Zoe for always answering to Mal. He seemed to think that her loyalties lied with Mal and that she always sided with him when he felt that maybe every once in a while she should side with the man she is married to. He feels that Mal is a the third partner in the relationship because Zoe has so much loyalty to him. I saw it as Wash questioning whether her loyalty lied with her husband or her captain.

PS - I loved "War Stories". What a great episode. I loved it for many reasons. It gave real drama to Zoe and Wash's relationship. Something that every true relationship has, it isn't fantasy. I also loved the torture scene and how crude Mal was when trying to keep Wash from slipping away. I also loved when Zoe comes in and has absolutely no hesitation when she chooses Wash over Mal. And then Wash talking about how crazy Mal is, and how he wouldn't give up. Great episode.

Exactly, a later scene in War Stories confirms this. As Wash complains to Mal : " No (she didn't vow to honor obey), but that's just it, you she obeys. There is obeying going on."

Wash is upset that Zoe defers to Mal in ways that she would never defer to him. That her first loyalty is to Mal.

I imagine it has something to do with the fact that he gave up his whole life to protect her. It would seem like quite a waste if she got pinched or killed due to her participation in some petty theivery. Not to mention that Mal has devolved into more of a jerk since Inara and Book left, regardless of the exact timeframe.

I highly recommend reading the Serenity book with the original screenplay and maybe the new one too. I gives a lot of meaning to things and what they are all thinking and not just saying. I thoughly enjoyed this book and would read again in an instant as soon as it is returned to me.

1. When I first saw that I wasn't sure what to make of it with Jayne getting cut with the knife.

2. I believe that Wash is talking about Mal, at first I thought it to be himself like someone else said, but that didn't make sense to me really.

3. I don't think that she gave him a psycic nudge, I think that she sensed him as her senses have been hightened because of the tests done on her. I believe that Jayne just wanted to get rid of her for whatever his reasons are. I think its more than just her being crazy and so on.

In Ariel, I don't think there's any reason to choose between those two interpretations. It's entirely possible that she slashed him because he was going to betray them, but she slashed him where and when she did because seeing the logo on the shirt triggered.

I did notice the logo in that scene on my own when nobody else I knew did, and I felt pretty good about that.

Took me a bit to get the line in War Stories, but I agree that he's talking about Mal.

I remain unsure about what Jayne means when he says they're going to go for a nice shuttle ride. Presumably he's talking about taking her and turning her in? That seems unusually stupid and greedy, even for him, but I can easily see how recent events might have pushed him over the edge where she's concerned.

As for misunderstandings, the first time I saw the movie, I misheard Mal's line to Inara, "You fog things up!" as "You f*** things up!" I was totally and completely shocked by that, shared that shock, and was completely shot down. On further review, it IS "fog," but I still mishear it sometimes.

I managed to understand most of them (though noticing the blue sun logos didn't happend til the second of so viewings)

my biggest misunderstanding was at the start of the movie, just after the 'oh god, oh god, we're all going to die line' where Mal comes out of the bridge, and spots Jayne with all his hardware, tells him that he can't take the grenades, then walks off past Zoe and says to her 'talk to your husband' she turns to Jayne and says something like 'we're just robbing the place, not occupying'.

Now a little latter in the movie, Zoe and Wash are snuggling.

So, not having seen Firefly before this (i'd heard of it, and was waiting for my dvd rental place to deliver it) my first (alarmed) thought was
'oh my god! she cheating on the guy with the gun fetish? Right out in the open, under his nose, on the same ship? with the ginger bloke? Random woman.

Imagine the giggle when I saw the movie again recently having got to know the characters... how in hells name could I ever think that Zoe would marry Jayne... How in hells name could I think anybody would marry Jayne...

* To Jayne's fans, please don't hurt me! I love Jayne, fine figure of a man, first choice for, ah, recreational purposes, and no-strings friendships, but can you see any woman willingly playing second fiddle to Vera?

If you read 'Finding Serenity', theres a great chapter about their relationship and that show. As in my other thread, I suggest reading it. It'll be a 17 bucks well spent.

In the BDM, when Jayne has the gall to ask Mal how many, aside from Zoe, came back from the Battle of Serenity, Zoe says,

"you're gonna want to walk out of this room now"

I figured she was warning him about Mal going to kick his butt. After the third viewing, I'm pretty sure she's warning him that SHE is the one getting ready to kick his butt.

Three-four *WHAT* max??? Rounds? No, 'cause he rips off three rounds after that. Mags, full cartridges, makes more sense.

Firefly is a sharp show, with sharp writing. The double meanings are everywhere. I think if they weren't, I'd have gotten bored long ago!

I'd marry Jayne. Hell, he'd treat me okay.

Probably because that is what he says. The next two words are debated though.

The subtitles in Firefly were quite inaccurate at times, for example YoSafBridge (short for Yolanda-Safron-Bridget) was subtitles as being Chinese.

Apparently that inaccuracy continued, though in a different way.

Serenity is the only DVD I don't watch with subtitles, I got in the habit of not using subtitles for Firefly, and since the only two times I tried to use the Serenity subtitles to clarify lines (that being one of them) I discovered they were definitively wrong (and thus no help in finding out what was right) I have no intention of using subtitles watching Serenity in the future.

I only hope that if I ever actually lose my hearing there will be accurate subtitles available.

In this case, it's the subtitles that are hilariously wrong. That's where the "Three, four max" comes from, in point of fact. Obviously the people who did the subtitles were working from the sound track and didn't have a copy of the script -- or didn't refer to it.

The line is indeed "Three full mags (i.e. magazines) and my swingin' cod."

Allow me to point out... the change in Jayne's line from the script (from 'cartridges' to 'mags') is pretty darn important.

The term 'cartridge' refers to the combination of the bullet (the projectile - the part that actually comes out of the barrel of the gun and into the target) and the casing (the part that contains the stuff that explodes to make the bullet go (and might jingle onto the floor next to the shooter)).

A 'magazine' is what most people think it is - the closed, spring loaded part that plugs right into the gun and chambers the next round itself.

So, yeah, there is a substantial difference between three full cartridges and three full mags.

...On another note, I think my favorite subtitle is still, "You're a rabbit, Mal," from The Message.

Two things:

First, I simply thought River cut Jayne's shirt because he grosses everybody out at the diner table, and then he laughs about not wanting to offend anybody. But I see the shirt as a much better reason now.

Second, in the BDM: There is nothing left to see. I saw the movie twice, then say my DVD and didn't pick up on that before I checked the subtitles. There is nothing left to say, is what I was hearing. And that also made sense...

A moment that confused me (and I'm still a little hazy on) is in "Objects" when River is seeing the thoughts of the crew at the beginning. She see's Book saying something like "I don't care if you're innocent or not, so where does that leave you?" (sorry if misquote). His anger seems to be directed at Jayne but he says it just as River walks in. Is he suspicious of Jayne's betrayal of Simon and River? Is that what he feels about River? Or is it some hint to his past (as a operative or assasin or alliance official, etc.)? Most folks I ask about think it's about Jayne but I'm still unsure.

She understands, but she doesn't comprehend.

I ~think~ the line is "I don't give half a hump if you're innocent or not. So where does that put you?"

I assumed it was directed at River, not Jayne. Everyone knows Jayne ain't exactly the picture of innocence, but River is. She's a kid who was tortured and altered and turned into a weapon that she doesn't want to be. The rest of the crew understand that during the course of the episode, but I think that line was to show that Book doesn't, and probably can't, despite how sweet he appears to the others.

We always assumed Book was the friendly, charming person he appeared to the crew, albeit one with a shady past. But then, who didn't have a shady past on that boat? Kaylee maybe? I think that line was to show that his shady past was a much larger part of him than we would otherwise believe, and that River was the only person who could see it. It's so far away from the absolution scene between Inara and Book in the pilot that I sometimes wonder if he might have been playing her. Maybe to see if he could play a player? So he'd know if it was safe to stay?

Hunh...I always thought that Book's line was simply a sentence he said in the past. He isn't speaking to River or Jayne - River is hearing one of his memories, like the memories of Miranda that she picks up from someone else in the BDM.

Mal's line, for instance, "None of it means a damn thing" - at first I didn't get it because I thought it was a thought he had towards Inara but then in another post, someone suggested that it was a memory from the Battle of Serenity. That makes the hollow, aching delivery of that line make perfect sense.

I still don't know what Inara's line is all about. Any ideas?

And I am impressed by how much you all notice in these things. I guess I am just going to have to watch them all over again to notice the little details. Tough job, but someone's got to do it!

Clearly, River is "hearing" things that are outside of her. She hears Mal's comment that nothing means a damn thing. He fought a war that he lost, he loves a woman that he brings into his familly and that won't stop her from leaving (she seems to leave because she's too attached to them) and Inara might just wish Mal would say what he really feels about her.

River understands the real things behind what is said, but an object is just an object. A gun, unless you use it, is just metal parts. You could use a gun as a hammer to put a nail in the wall if you wanted to...

This is my other favorite episode, with War Stories, but for clearly different reasons.

I'm really bad about not reading through things but I'm going to stick myself out on the line here.

During this OIS, Simon says something along the lines of "I would still be there now". He says the same exact thing in episode but in different context. Like he was saying that if he hadn't done anything about River like his parents wanted him to do, he would still be working in the hospital and River would still be getting tortured.

Same with Inara. Doesn't she say something along the "I'm a big girl" line in the Heart of Gold episode.

Maybe I'm delusional or something. I could very well be looking more into this than I really should.

Most of you all probably picked this up the first time watching the "Serenity" episode, but I never noticed it until after and had finished the series and went back to watch the episodes over. In the battle of Serenity Valley, right before Mal goes for the gun, he pulls out a crucifix and kisses it. This is also in the BDM novelization. After seeing this I finally understood Mal's attitude toward God, because he felt that God had abandoned him in that valley, so he abandonded God.

Again, something most probably noticed but I didn't until the second time around.

My first post. You guys are very good. I've watched the dvd shows several times and never picked up on the blue sun/river connection. I never saw this show when it was on t.v. and I remember the movie coming out but never saw it. Just a couple of weeks ago I was at my nephews house and was flippin channels. I came across firefly and watched for a few minutes. I said "hey, this is a good show" and my nephew said "yeah it was cancelled it's first season". I went out, got the bdm and was hooked (blown away more like it). I went straight to amazon and got the show and it's freakin amazing. Keep it up.

I think Book is recalling something he HEARD or said.. it is not directed at Jayne nor River (we know he believes in River by the BDM) but I think it is directed at BOOK... whatever his mysterious past was... maybe he was an operative and said it to someone.. or maybe someone in Alliance said it to him and he got away and hid out in a monestary... SOMEDAY Joss will tell us Book's story.. I so look forward to that day

i also loved this scene in "war stories". it was so unlike anything you see in "normal" television shows.

i also had a slow moment when it came to the scene in "ariel" when river slices jayne. i was like, "oh yeeeeahh! a blue sun shirt!" as if i wasn't lookin' at his chest. i shoulda noticed that.

i thought that the scene in "war stories" with zoe and wash and the "one less husband" line was referring to zoe being the husband. that was my interpretation.

River goes loopy in Shindig, when Jayne, Simon and book are playing cards. She starts ripping the labels off the food cans because of the Blue Sun label. Jaynes comment makes me laugh 'We gonna play cards or screw around' :D

I like this idea of Book's line having multiple implications. Referring to his past, specifically, I thought that this gave some indication into his employment from a time and place he might be running from. But, i think it can also be applied to how Book feels about River's and Jayne's respective realities. I seem to be drawn to this plane where Whedon's multiple meanings often converge on each other. If that specific situation has anything to do with how Book's thought is actually triggered in this moment, then all of these implications seem to have validity. Is any one out there crazy enough to think that Book might have had something to do with the experiments done on River back at the "academy." That would be insane. Just thinking out loud.
