This weekend, Saturday, I took a date and went to see The Intern with Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway (she wanted to go see The Perfect Guy, yeeeesh!). The Intern, a more than capable comedy, tells the story of a retired widowed business/gentleman that took a trip through the looking glass from the Golden Era of Movies. It was sweet, without being saccharine; it was both predictably and unpredictably funny - like a modern day screwball comedy and that was non-political.

You might say, "what a boring movie;" perhaps that would have been the case in lesser hands, but Robert De Niro raised the stakes so much so, that you didn't mind some of the more "fluffy" stuff. Actually his presence, along with some great chemistry with Anne Hathaway, made this flick into the little movie that could. De Niro played his character, Ben Whitaker, with aplomb and solid gentlemanly behavior that hearkened back to the aforementioned Golden Era of Movies. It did not, by any means, sink to morbidity or prove sanctimonious thanks mainly to De Niro and Hathaway.

Ben, answers an ad in search of a 'senior' intern to work with Jules Ostin (Hathaway) an internet clothes fashion entrepreneur struggling to keep her fledgling company afloat. There are some obvious "old" jokes that were tastefully done with the requisite "old dog teaching the young pups, well, old tricks" and hilarity ensues.

There were a few rough transitions from one scene to the next, but, for the most part, they were passable due to the script's light touch and the two main leads spot-on chemistry. I liked it because it depicted a future I may well face within a few short years - trying to keep occupied with meaningful activities after retiring from the so-called "rat race." Believe me, if I had Anne Hathaway sitting across from me at my new place of work, I'd be happy too.

Me too, more than I thought I would. De Niro has still got it, he took this movie up on his shoulders and carried it to the end.
