Brooklyn, starring Saoirse Ronan, is a simple tale, but so well acted, written and filmed, it is likely to end up the best I've seen this year. Granted, I haven't been to the theater much lately, but the majority of big releases either don't appeal to me or else don't satisfy me the way they seem to for others. One example being Mad Max: Fury Road, which I enjoyed, but I still can't understand the consensus opinion, including the awards it's already won. I don't even care if Brooklyn gets nominated or wins any awards, it's still great. Saoirse should be nominated, along with Julie Walters, who I didn't even recognize, but she was fantastic too. The guy who played her boyfriend/husband Tony (Emory Cohen) also deserves mention. It's set in 1950-52, and other than a couple of scenes with strong language, it is much like movies that were produced then. No, I don't think that's a negative. It's likely I caught its last showing here. Sixteen screens at that theater, another eighteen in town, and yet they felt it only deserved two showings a day. Until today that is, when I guess they figured The Force Awakens needed another screen, so it was down to just one. They still don't have tomorrow's schedule online, but I suspect Brooklyn will not be on it.
