What say you?

Will anything beat Deadpool? With dollars or quality?

Can't say there is much I am looking forward to, but I have not been paying as much attention.

Other than avoiding Bafflackman, can't recall a lot with great advertizing, either. I feel sorry for Cavill.
I have already missed Hateful 8, Jane Got a Gun, Regression.

Summary of titles in this thread:

Hateful 8 - 30 Dec 2015
13 Hours - 15 Jan
Jane got a Gun - 29 Jan

Midnight Special - 18 Mar
Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 - 25 March
Batman Vs Superman - 25 Mar

Jungle Book - 15 Apr
Criminal - 15 April
Captain America: Civil War - 6 May

Hateful 8 is good, mainly because of Kurt Russell, but Tarantino is slipping. I agree about Cavill, although I think I might go see it anyway (read down below).
Haven't heard much about Jane Got A Gun or Regression.

Rotten Tomatoes gave Jane a 35% rating and Regression was much worse at 14%

DeadPool will be hard to top with the upcoming crop of movies this summer, it probably won't be until Fall/Winter that we'll see something even come close - like
Avatar 2 maybe. But keep your eyes on Finding Dory, and the Secret Life of Pets is a sleeper, Ghostbusters I'm not so sure of, but it could be fun.

One of the reasons I'm going to see Batman v. Superman is to see Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman (she looks awesome in the trailers), but I'm giving Snyder another chance to Wow me.
Midnight Special is intriguing, X-Men: been a fan since I was a boy, Jungle Book looks interesting, Ghostbusters I'm there, Captain America: I still haven't seen Winter Soldier, so I have some catching up to do.

Deadpool is the best superhero movie since the Dark Knight.

Had you seen Gal Godot in F&F? Did she get some fake-Os since having her kid?

Thanks all for mentioning Midnight Special. That looks good and it was not on my radar until now.

X-Men seems to have been withering for a while. Perhaps I sense too many different fingers in that pie. Hard to think it will better Deadpool.
Captain America I should probably check out, Winter Soldier seemed a decent story line but I wasn't impressed with the SFX.

Now I remember. Independence Day comes on June 24.

My kiddo took a moment to really get all the nuance, but she's asked to watch it three times in the last six months. I didn't mind a bit

America loves a winner!

I scoffed at the idea of Dawn of Justice, but as I have free passes to burn, why not ? I'm intrigued at how they're going to fit all the pieces of this one together.

Civil War is way up on my list.

Suicide Squad has potential.

Star Trek, maybe ?

Dr. Strange ( not out until November. )

Rogue One - Star Wars story ( December )

Hell, after that , it gets pretty thin...

Finding Dory ?

Jason Bourne ?

Can't believe they even bothered making...

Ghostbusters - all chick cast

X-Men - Armageddon ( looks like a terrible ending for the franchise right there )

ANOTHER Ninja Turtle movie ? Really?

Slim pickins this year, it seems. Real slim.

Regarding films this year thathave already been worthy, I should have mentioned 13 Hours.

To be honest, I only saw 2 of the F&F movies, the frist and the last one (only because my date dragged me kicking and screaming to go see it. After seeing, what number 8?, she even commented that it was over the top and LOUD!!!

I was not aware she was in those until I looked up her bio. Now I'm curious, but not enough to pay money to see any of them again.

X-Men: Apocalypse - mainly one reason I have to go see this movie, Bryan Singer directed. He directed the original X-Men and I loved it. I think that was a nice touch by the studio, plus I think he did the best job out of all of them.

I agree, I don't see any of the movies being released this year beating out Deadpool.

Shouldn't cost anything getting them free from the Public Library.
FWIW, I thought they were fine for the first 3, until Tokyo Drift which was really stupid. At least they were fine as long as your are gullible enough to believe ricers are capable of racing. Including front wheel drive. If you have any clue about cars, that is a huge suspension of disbelief right there.

Hey EC,

Midnight Special

Let me start out by saying that writer/director Jeff Nichols has an uniquely
adept style of writing a script, and is equally gifted in the director's chair.
I liked how he presented the story (it reminded me of the storytelling style in
10 Cloverfield Lane, sparse dialogue, long on intrigue with a dash of Spielberg
for flavor. I was impressed by his pacing, shot selection and editing). Little is revealed as the audience is encouraged to peel back the layers of this onion
of a story.

Piece by piece we get tiny peeks at clues that reveal just a little bit more,
as we are dropped into the middle of an on-the-run pursuit of a young boy with special powers. He is being sought after by the authorities - FBI men-in-black
types, but also a type of religious cult. It's as if we are on the run as well,
as the man who is the "father" and a childhood friend, team up with the mother
to protect the child from those who would look to use and abuse those special powers.

It is tight, taught and brilliantly crafted. The relationship between father
and son is unique, to say the least, but there is genuine emotion and a sense
of protective and unconditional love. Michael Shannon does a solid job as the
father, and Kirsten Dunst is equal to the task. You can sense the desperation
in the 3 of them looking to keep the boy out of the clutches of the Feds, but
also too, away from the hands of the cult (who have their own agenda). I liked
the "you-are-there" feeling I got, and the frenetic pace of the chase. And I
kept wondering why is this boy so important? The Feds, the usual I thought -
military applications (somewhat cliche), and the Cult, the whole "end-of-days"
scenario (ditto in the cliche department), but that didn't bother me so much,
because of the tightness of the script, the thrill-a-second mystery that was
being spun in front of our eyes.

But something, I thought, was missing and I couldn't quite put my finger on it.
Anyway, I thought, it's a mystery I want to get to the bottom of. Even as a thousand questions popped into my head: Did the mother give birth to him or was
he found on the doorstep? Where dd he come from? Where were they going? Was this part of an alien invasion? Still though, my curiosity was piqued. I was on edge
until the very end and then.................NO SPOILERS!!!

But as a sci-fi geek, I was somewhat disappointed.

Rosamund's character was in a different city, and a much earlier time period, if going by the timeline of the book series (yes, that timeline is very, very funky.) Cobie's character name is not the same as in the book, but I suspect she is the character which Reacher has been heading to for the previous 4 or 5 books - the author teased her into Reacher's goals during all those novels. The physical description of the character matches Cobie, but she might need to do some fight training - that could be good to see. She wasn't a puffball in Avengers, was she?

Criminal was excellent.
Might be the best film I've seen this year, weird that the other best (Deadpool) also starred Reynolds, since I don't consider myself to be a huge fan.
Although the basic storyline has been done many times before, I don't think ever with this level of treatment. I was glad I didn't feel like I was in another comic book video game.
By the time the film ended, I felt like I had just watched another Ex-Machina.
I have enjoyed watching Alice Eve, but admit that she often looks adorable in roles, and this time her role was much meatier, she did well I thought.
Have mostly only seen Antje Traue in Woman in Gold, Pandorum, Man of Steel, but I hope this gives her more exposure than Woman in Gold, and we see her more.
The somewhat haunting score from Lola Marsh was very nice. I had considered this performance reminiscent of Jane Siberry, although I noticed it was not Jane.

You'll have to dig to find where it's playing. My guess is it will wind up
on Netflix pretty soon. Right now it's playing in 2 theatres in my town (not
a good sign).

I liked it. It reminded me of the way they shot film in the 70s.

I finally saw Jane Got a Gun, and QT8.

I enjoyed Jane Got a Gun. I was reminded of the pacing of Pale Rider, and the ending was better than I expected, although I should have seen it coming. The story was well enough that likely many other actresses coud have pulled it off, not sure if it really stretched Natalie so much. I am fairly sure I would have enjoyed it in cinema even more, but I somehow missed it in the theater. I think I have lucked out this year, having seen Deadpool, Criminal, and now I am not sure if I like Jane better than one of those or not. Something subtle about it, but I felt a pleasant state by the time it was finished.

QT8 aka H8ful Eight was obviously another Quentin work, even if he would have used another name for directing. It sometimes felt like Pulp Fiction in the post-Civil War west. Nice to see Madsen and Dern from Mulholland Falls reuniting again. Apparently this is the 11th film shot in Ultra Panavision, the last being in 1965/66. When you are looking for a really high-end TV or projection, perhaps this will be a good film to compare resolution and imagery with. It took me a little wondering to figure out which 8 characters were the title roles, but one of the trailers counted them out for us. I thought the Beatlesque song Apple Blossom wedged into an otherwise decent soundtrack was jarring and disrupted continuity both with the soundtrack and with the time period. If this could be muted the film could be watched a second time. Otherwise, no.

I enjoyed watching Independence Day: Resurgence.

One of the last films of Robert Loggia, he is credited In Memoriam.
Other actors I had hoped to see return were Adam Baldwin and Lisa Jakub, but alas, no.

The first half seemed clunky in terms of storylines and the transitions, segues seemed less smooth than I had expected. Director Roland Emmerich repeats from the first, and writer James Woods is also in the cast.
But the second half works well, you can forget about the first half issues, the solution is cool, and the axtion wraps up well.
Perhaps a commentary on politics, this fictitious America has had a female President the past 3.5 years, and her decision is the classic blunder

Select to view spoiler:

of First Contact, almost ending InterGalactic warfare in favor of Evil, but then this is salvaged by cooler (male) heads

The storylines about the next generation of the last heroes is a bit unclear, perhaps unneeded. Parts of it may be better if the original was not seen. All of the Presidents saluting each other and calling each other President seemed a little weird type of protocol.

Good exposure for Angelababy and Liam Hemsworth (is he Mr. Miley Cyrus yet?)

I do recommend it.

One of the trailers prior to the feature was for Star Trek Beyond. A bit fitting, since Liam's brother Chris Hemsworth launched the franchise reboot. Noticed that beyond appears to take place somewhere that is not earth, a good change of p(l)ace. And written by Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World's End), so now I think I must see it. The last Trek entry with Anton Yelchin.

Jason Bourne this Friday.
With Alicia Vikander.

How many here will skip it? I can suffer Damon when he has a surrounding cast like this.

While att he cinema last night for Jason Bourne, I noticed I should add Mechanic: Ressurection and Sully.

Mechanic has Jessica Alba and Jason Staitham. August 26.

Sully is a Clint Eastwood film with Tom Hanks. September 9. This looks good, particularly following Clint's work with American Sniper. And I don't recall Clint ever working with Tom Hanks before, although the wife is played by Laura Linney, reteaming with Clint again. The trailer looks like it spends a bunch of time beyond the courageous and incredible feat of accomplishing a landing which had never taken place in aviation history before (for a commercial bird). Aero-enthusiasts will know that this event is minutely studied as a template for future disaster flights to have a chance of repeating this miraculous landing.

I did catch Nice Guys, and just saw Midnight Special on DVD. MS should have stayed in theaters for much longer.

Real slim.

Yup, slim pickens is a much better summary than what I said.

Regarding films this year that have already been worthy, I should have mentioned 13 Hours.

So, saw Star Trek... literally walked out during the closing minutes, after the big finale'. Wow... what pre-packaged nonsense.

Suicide Squad - sad that it's getting grilled by the critics, but at least it had a decent opening weekend. I'll still check it out.

*** Civil War was awesome ! But I've only caught it once, surprisingly.

Finding Dory, I still like to see. And maybe Jungle Book ? There's not much else.

One of the reasons I'm going to see Batman v. Superman is to see Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman (she looks awesome in the trailers)

Had you seen Gal Godot in F&F? Did she get some fake-Os since having her kid?

To be honest, I only saw 2 of the F&F movies, the frist and the last one.

I was not aware she was in those until I looked up her bio. Now I'm curious, but not enough to pay money to see any of them again.

Shouldn't cost anything getting them free from the Public Library.

Gal Gadot looks great in the upcoming Keeping Up With The Joneses.
Looks like she is playing roles off of her improved physique/fitness.

Coming 21 October. Also with Patton Oswald and Kevin Dunn.

My Fave theater will be closed for a month, so I'll need to find a way to see Mechanic and Sully. I am bummed.

I finally saw Mechanic today.

I liked it, so Mal4prz should avoid it.

The first quarter was several tropical beach happenings, I wondered if the action pacing was being neglected. But then things picked up. It seemed the action was better than most of the films this year, but The Mechanic (actually, every Mechanic of this sort) is a one-man action machine, whereas in Bourne and London Has Fallen there are numerous factions of action. I am wondering if Criminal had comparable action, and I expect to see it again. I had hoped for a meatier role for Alba, and even though she still has a hot bod after 2 kids, she still has sex with her clothes on - in the hot tropics, to boot.

The plot is not tremendously deep, but if you know what to expect, this should satisfy.
