I think Aliens or Alien Xenomorph verse is there, it might also tie into Death Race, the Predator verse and maybe nods at Replicants hinting it might or might not be Blade Runner-ish. Alien Earth tv Series and Alien Romulus have undone many mistakes of the past, keeping the visuals of old films H R Giger sculpted art and Ridley Scott and James Cameron's originals, another Blade Runners link 'Total Recall' both movies and a tv show, and the Riddick movie franchise has some fans.

A Space Opera should have endurance. I will state Firefly is better than Star Wars, I think 'Star Wars' is over-rated

Without Flash Gordon and Star Trek, the Dam Busters story or Kurosawa Samurai film and other ideas to inspire Lucas there would be no Star Wars

in regard to writing I believe the JMS series Babylon-5 is better than Star Wars, in some areas of props and imaginative design and Fx the show 'Farscape' has even been superior to Lucas, some elements of the Marvel DC or indie comicbook universe can be better than Star Wars. Men In Black comicbooks to movies did work for a while until it didnt and so did some of the indie French Japan British comicbook stuff.
the Star Trek franchise when done well has far better potential than Star Wars

I like Serenity but I do not 'Love It'. However as a movie I do not like Serenity, I think the Firefly tv show was much better.

Stargate is in a strange position it was a great movie and show but maybe it just went on too long
Dune goes without saying, it has been a cult favorite for decades but it is difficult to do 'correctly' to keep fans happy.
I think there is potential for the Xbox Nintendo Sony video game world to launch the next movie franchise with Starccraft or 40K or Video Game movie or Fallout or Halo TV series now movie to the screens. Wing Commander was a critical and commercial failure, however it did not have a huge loss as the budget was relatively Low especially compared to today's budgets. Warhammer 40K is probably there, it is moving to mainstream but its not liked by everyone it can be over the top and cartoonishly grim a board game of murder a video game world of survival but it is a very deep and developed universe.
'Starship Troopers' could be given a nod for creating so many Space Soldiers, Space Navy stories, Space Marines etc

Dune and Flash Gordon would make some lists, however 'Dune' can be difficult to translate and for some Flash Gordon might feel out dated with its campyness. Edgar Rice Burroughs story of John Carter was considered a flop, it would be inetresting to see if 'Takeshi Kovacs' could be made in a movie format, I think 'The Matrix' and Planet of the Apes qualifies even if its post Apocalyspe and mostly on Earth but Maybe you could talk of the Andy Weir universe, The Martian, Project Hail Mary worlds.

Perhaps some type of Japan Anime should rank, it is becoming mainstream again they have lots of stories of Space Robots with drama or Japanese Space Battleship with soap opera, some of these stories have been translated to Live Action with mixed results. Alastair Reynolds is one of those guys who almost is going mainstream not yet there but he has done writing for Dr Who and Love Death Robots series. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card it has fans and critics so maybe that is mixed. Is the ‘2001 A Space Odyssey’ established as its own world? There are new guys from SKorea, Thailand, China making waves in the film animation and novel circles the Cixin Liu universe, The Wandering Earth a science fiction novella by Chinese writer Cixin Liu, the worlds of The Three-Body Problem, Remembrance of Earth's Past.

Blade Runner might be there, however a lot of its story is 'Earth Based' rather than outer space it had tv animations, video games and Blade Runner 2049, Dredd Universe could also be given a nod. Dredd is raw like Mad Max but there some of Dredd that is set in space and based on the indie British 2000 AD comic strip Judge Dredd.
Other books 'The Expanse' series and Foundation, Isaac Asimov worlds? some mixed feed back from Isaac Asimov fans and Expanse fans and I have not watched all these shows maybe they could be made into movies? I think Fifth Element is a copycat, for me Fifth Element doesnt have enough in it to be a space opera but it is funny. Battlestar Galactica maybe works as a Migration Survival story or Lost Fleet series but the old Galactica can look dated and the new movie pilot had a mixed reaction, people generally liked the tv show.

Heavy Metal (1981) is what Fifth Element ripped off?

I'm not sure how "Jupiter Ascending" is 'Best' when they admit its 'A Mess'

Tron not exactly 'in space' but had potential even if its not real outer space but 'Cyber-Space'
