THESOMNAMBULIST

Just saw Rise of The Planet of the Apes and really enjoyed it. A worthy addition to the franchise and perhaps the first film that has significantly convinced me as to the merits of CGI to convey a story. There were a few close-up reaction shots in there that had me going "Wow!"

Good solid story and strong direction.

Next up tree of Life.

Please don't take this the wrong way, Chris, but based on what I perceive to be your prevailing taste in movies and TV I don't think you would enjoy ToL that much. Or at all.

I consider this

to be one of the best movies I have ever seen.

Now you tell me if I might like ToL...

Warning: no fighting or lasers in it!
But you may be shocked at what I can really appreciate.

You're right, Chris. The Road Home is a great film. I guess there's hope for you yet.

I don't think it is as good as Tree of Life though.

OONJERAH

As I said to my friend Tim recently, I so envy his ability to see and appreciate nuances, for I don't have it.
(Subleties, implications, broad hints even) Insensitive peasant here.

I am pretty sure I saw Days of Heaven a few years back, also by Terrence Malick, and promptly forgot it.
Therefore, I'm not gonna Try to enjoy The Tree of Life.

Elongated, flowery speech was, I believe, typical of our colonial period and beyond, maybe up to the Revolution.
I figure it was a form of self entertainment in times when even books were rare.

The use of it in True Grit was a surprise and should have been a pleasant one, in lieu of the wicked tendencies
of many writers to impose 20th century styles and mores onto our heroic pioneers. Instead I found it irritating
and wondered if the story would ever get on with itself. I made it as far as boy, LaBoeuf, meets girl, Mattie,
and gave it up.

Raised on Westerns. I still love some of them. *sigh*
