Yes, Hammer films has returned a couple years ago but they haven't gone back to their Victorian Gothic horror roots....until now. Man I cannot wait to see this one.

George Lucas looks to be making good movies again.

Spielberg too? Awesome.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I'm sure I've heard of a few more, but the only ones I can think of right now are Apollo 18 and Adventures of Tintin.

LWAVES

I was actually coming on to this site just now thinking about posting a thread like this as a sort of follow up to the Best Of 2011 So Far thread.
You already did it so thanks I guess.

I too am looking forward to The Woman In Black. It's a great story and one of my faves of all time. Hopefully they'll do it justice. It'll also be interesting to see how Radcliffe fairs now that Harry Potter is done. He was good in November Boys so there is some promise.

The only others I have a real, solid interest in that are released this year or early next year are:

Tintin - Spielberg + Jackson.
Hugo - And now for something completely different. It's Scorcese so I'm pretty much in from the start and I like the fact that he's trying his hand at a family adventure movie - despite what the naysayers may think.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - Gary Oldman seems to fit the role of Smiley in the similar way to what Alec Guiness did. With a top notch supporting cast and excellent looking trailer this could be an great remake.

There are other movies that I have a passing interest in and will probably see at some point bit these few are the main ones.

And lest we forget there is also the next Twilight film. Anyone here willingly going to see it?
Nope, I didn't think so.

There really hasn't been any huge, must-see releases this year. There have been great films, surprising films and highly entertaining movies but nothing on the scale of Dark Knight, Potter, Inception or Toy Story etc. The rest of the year doesn't seem to have any either.
Of course the rest of next year is a different story with The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, Dark Shadows and The Hobbit to name a few.

I'm looking forward, to varying degrees, the big releases (Avengers, Dark Knight, Hobbit, etc).

Beyond those, I'm looking forward to:

Illysium - Niel Blomkamp's fllow-up to district 13. Don't know much about it other than it's Sci-Fi, and there have been pics of Matt Damon made up as some sort of wounded cyborg that have piqued my interest.

Pacific Rim - Guillermo Del Toro's giant monster movie, currently shooting.

Gravity - Alphonso Curan's new sci-fi survival thriller with Sandra Bullock and George Cloony. It's essentially the sub drowning scene from The Abyss expanded to feature length, but is supposed to feature some really impressive photography, utilizing the ultra-long takes he used in Children of Men.

Real Steel - The premise - fighting robots - should be stupid, Im not a fan of the director, and I find the producer to be one of the biggest jerks in Hollywood. But it's from a Richard Mattheson story, so points for that, and the trailers have gotten better each time, so I'm curious.

Prometheus - Ridley Scott's not-Alien prequel. I'm just happy to see Scott dabbling in Sci Fi again. Even when his movies are bad, they're often more interesting (and almost assuredly more visually interesting) than most Hollywood fare, so I'm very excited.

Oppy's post was all about films coming out later this year so that's what I was thinking about too. If we're expanding it to next year then there would have to be more on my list.

Just took a look at the cast list of Spielberg's War Horse, now that one's on my list too.

Hey L. Doesn't he just eh? I thought the same thing when I saw the trailer. I'm not a huge fan of Goldman as I think he has a tendency to overact. However I must admit for this he seems absolutely perfect. Do you remember the original series with Guiness back in the 80's? I imagine like me you were still a kid back then but I do recall it being a huge TV event at the time. My dad would watch it religiously. I think this will be an interesting update.

Otherwise.

THE THING. I'm a touch wary of this prequel/remake/reboot/reimagining but I must admit, being a fan of both the 50's one and the 80's one I'm hoping this remake will do it's predecessor's justice and serve as a worthy addition to the story.

THE MUPPETS. I just can't help but love the muppets. So this one I hope to go see with my nieces and nephews. Should be fun.

Looking a little further still:
PROMETHEUS has my interest piqued. When I saw Avatar I did wonder at what Alien would 'feel' like had Scott the 3D technology back then. It seems like the ultimate film for current 3D, and Scott's abilities, as the best for such technology. So I have high hopes.

JOHN CARTER Interested to see what Andrew Stanton, who cut his teeth directing animation will do with a live action feature.

THE AVENGERS Apparently the guy who did Buffy is making this... So sure why not.

The Woman in Black was slated to be released in August of this year, but got pushed back to February. I have no problem with that.

On a side note 2 films That got released this month that I was interested in seeing have tanked. Horrible numbers. Conan, and Fright Night. I was shocked to see that Conan the Barbarians budget was upward of $90 million(I think it has earned 16 so far). Fright Night on the other hand was written by Marti Noxon(one of my favorite Buffy writers) and was shocked that there was so little interest in it. My friend watched it and said it was pretty awesome. Lots of suspense, and very well written. I still plan on seeing both.

Hey Som,
We agree again. One of these days we are going to disagree about something and it will set off the chain reaction that will cause the end of the world in 2012.

I've been a fan of Gary Oldman's work for many years since Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead (excellent, highly underrated movie) but I do agree that he can overact at times. Although I do think this tends to happen in what could be called 'paycheck' movies.
Yeah I was a kid when TTSS was on TV but I remember wanting to watch it because it had Ben Kenobi in it!! My dad watched it religiously too but I did get to see Smiley's People when that aired - which was also excellent. Many years later I borrowed a video copy off a friend and finally watched TTSS. Classic TV.

I've just read that Empire magazine has given it 5 stars and summarises it with:
"Utterly absorbing, extremely smart and - considering this is a sad, shabby, drably grey-green world of obsessives, misfits, misfits, misdirection, disillusionment, self-delusion and treachery - quite beautifully executed."
Sounds like this could be up for awards when that season is here again.

And on a final note I have to second RiverTam1 for mentioning Knights Of Badassdom. I just hope it turns out to be as good as it's potential.

Yes I did consider that when I wrote the remark. I think it's something that is often a requirement for British actors. Y'know because of the whole thing about how they make for great villains. I was pleased with the way Nolan used him the Batman films though.

Perhaps a small overseas film maybe thriller or scifi

maybe a US indie horror production

the movie industry seemed to die 2014, 2015 to 2016, Batman Begins 2005 was considered a high culture product, you had other products Star Wars, Harry Potter, Star Trek, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lord of the Rings, Iron Man a 2008 film, The Avengers 2012 film there was one big final blockbuster Avengers End Game.

What is there to watch now
Maybe some Japanese Chinese or S.Korean movie on Robots or Mutants or AI or something, Japan monster movies can be worth a view.

Too many Hollywood flops now so pretty much giving up on Hollyweird

not all will flop but the Superhero comicbook thing is mostly dead, Barbie and Oppenheimer can make money.

Some of the Video Game cartoon stuff Playstation Xbox adapted to tv / movies seem ok

Hollywood's problem right now is the budgets, plain and simple.

Just because they're almost all flopping doesn't mean that they're all bad movies. The overall quality has certainly improved now that all the DEI departments have been liquidated and Joe Biden*'s economy killed Woke.

But we're nearly 5 months into the year and haven't even cracked 3/4 of a Billion on a single movie, and only three movies have grossed over 1/2 a Billion.

And the budgets of all of these other studios are starting to resemble the average budget for all of Disney's failures last year. Those budgets were fine in 2019 when there were multiple Billion dollar movies put out every year and plenty of movies that would get pretty close to that. Not in Joe Biden*'s America in 2024 though.

This situation is untenable. They need to adapt or die.

Well you quoted my 3rd sentence but skipped the first one.

I've been railing on the budgets since I started talking about movies in the CINEMA board, but I've been banging that drum twice as hard in 2024.

The budgets are Hollywood's #1 problem now that all the woke crap was cancelled.

I brought up actor's salaries in The Fall Guy Failure Thread. If Ryan Gosling made $20 Million and Emily Blunt made $5 Million, that's an additional $62.5 Million that the production company needs to make in theaters for the movie to break even just for those two actor's salaries.

The Fall Guy cost $125 Million to make, it has grossed $144 Million worldwide so far and still needs to make an additional $168.5 Million to break even.

It likely won't hit $200 Million worldwide before it's out of theaters, and it needed $312.5 Million to break even. Even bringing the pay for the two main actors down to earth weren't going to save this movie, but about half of the studio's losses on The Fall Guy will be because of how much Gosling and Blunt were paid.

another Godzillia-ish thing?

something from South Korea maybe

indie US movies grow, European movies, Chinese is inspired by manga and anime they have their own movie industry, in South Korea "The Tower" is a mysterious structure that is completely enclosed and hosts many unique environments, Tower of God is a South Korean manhwa released as a webtoon written and illustrated by S.I.U. It has been serialized in Naver Corporation's webtoon platform, this time Japanese copy South Korea, it received an anime television series adaptation by Telecom Animation Film that first premiered on Naver Series On in South Korea, and aired in Japan immediately afterward. According to the author, each floor is the size of the North American continent. Living on the top floors is associated with a higher status in the Tower and better living conditions. Is this South Korea's Christian story? Limbo is a concept in Roman Catholic theology12that refers to the afterlife condition of those who die in original sin without being assigned to the Hell of the Damned. This is because ascension from one floor to the next is only allowed by passing increasingly difficult tests of strength, dexterity and wit. Each floor often has its own culture, language and governance systems, and it is not uncommon to have nations living in isolation and unaware of the existence of the tower.

Hollyweird should keep their budgets under 200 Millions, its beyond a train-wreck now

It's as dead as the spaghetti western.

They've made their money back now, which I said they would, but with the $110 Million budget they needed $275 Million just to break even. We're talking maybe $125 Million profit here, which given that Madame Web lost Sony a ton of money is still a great outcome for them. And nobody is going to watch Kraven the Hunter, which I believe comes out soon.

Venom 3 had the same benefit that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 saw last year when all other comic book movies failed. Though critics always trashed the Venom movies, the audience loved them. Well... at least they love the first one anyhow.

Venom made $856,081,053 back in 2018 with a $116 Million budget.

In today's dollars, that is a billion dollar movie at $1,074,933,044.85

Comic book movies are dead.

You might be able to eek out one huge blockbuster every 2 years or so, but my advice would be to just retire the genre for 10 years and start all over.

Maybe this time spend some time on smaller, more down-to-earth stories, and don't bust your load with the huge "End Game" scenarios right away, because nothing you put out after that is interesting anymore.
