Okay guys, picture this:

Guillermo Del Toro atop the highest sequoia tree on earth, nicknamed: Cliché

You with me so far; now he's up there holding something in his hands. You get your binoculars and see that it's a film can, and on the cover is Pacific Rim.

Don't get ahead of me, but you see where I'm going with this. He throws it down to you but it hits every single branch along the way. With each hit, you're laughing your ass off. Ok, you get the picture............get it.

It's RockEm SockEm Robots vs. Godzilla, Monthra and every other prehistoric monster this side of Mt. Fuji, Japan. Except, in this story, it's Hong Kong that gets the treatment. Huge prehistoric monsters invading earth from deep within the core of the tectonic plates in the pacific rim. Mankind's only shot at survival is the creation of their own monsters to combat and save earth, piloted by humans. A simple-enough story, made in the traditional sci-fi B-movie style we earthlings are so accustomed to.

But Del Toro took it a step further. He embraced, no he championed the storytelling technique used in those self-same B movies. He loaded PR with clichéd characters, moments and instructed the actors to have fun with it. They took their roles seriously, and delivered such lines like: "We take the Kaiju parts and sell it on the black market. They're worth a fortune. Yes, they went there. A black market for monster parts (you had to be there). And it worked.

You would think a movie full of clichés wouldn't work, but it did. It was corny with a capital C - but so much fun. They actually didn't need Charlie Day for comic relief, although he was brilliant as the guy who figures it out. Truth be told my son wasn't as impressed, he expected more from Del Toro. He couldn't quite put his finger on it, but he wanted something more that what was delivered. I kind of understand where he was coming from, it was a bit long at 2 hours and 11 minutes, but just when you thought "ok, this is stupid" they would through another sight gag, or ridiculously corny line and you find yourself laughing and waiting for the next punchline, literally.

The special FX were spot on, at no time do you feel cheated or short-changed. Both the monsters and robots seem real enough, and the battles are seamless. Please don't go with any preconceived notions, sit back and enjoy the ride. Del Toro gave it just enough corn to make it this side of cringe-worthy, that you're laughing with him. I told my son, who may have been wondering, that was on purpose. Believe me, he delivered the goods.

By the way, stay for the end credits, it's worth it.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I always go to the matinee, which around here is only $5, I don't have kids to take and I never buy the over-priced popcorn and drinks. I'd have paid much more than that for Pacific Rim, and I will get the Blu-Ray when it comes out.

Well, I went to see it - and depth perception issues be berked, I went whole hog, IMAX3D with D-Max interactive seating, complete with monster size bucket o popcorn, oversize drink and a box of milk duds jammed through my belt cause I been drooling over this since the pre-trailer concept art and I wanted ALL of it!
(Note to D-max, if yer gonna make the chairs move, better cupholders!)

And boy howdy, Del Toro delivers the goods, does he ever.

A downright epic homage to the B-flick popcorn monster movies of old, complete with obligatory setpieces and thrashing every stock cliche with a flail wielded expertly by the SFX masters down at ILM and it's just freakin awesome.

Kaiju... epic
Mecha... awesome

Mecha decking a Kaiju with a freakin tanker - MAXIMUM BAD, baby!

I did get a very slight impression it had been chopped a bit for time, clocking in at 230 minutes, which is a bit much for the average moviegoers goldfish-like attention span, and consequently leaves me eager to get my grubby little hands on a directors cut or collectors edition, but you do get your moneys worth, oh indeed that.

The part that gave me a moment of hilarious pause was the amazing attention to detail (physics be damned) resulting in a blink and you'll miss it bit that practically left me snorting cola out my nose - hadn't considered THAT problem!

But overall, goooood stuff, sure it's cheese, but it's AWESOME cheese, and every ounce is delicious!

Saw it yesterday in IMAX 3D, and it was just as awesome as everyone says, although I want to see it again in 2D, since Guillermo designed it that way.

And I always stay to the very end of the credits, so it was nice to see the dedication to Monster Masters Ray Harryhausen and Ishiro Honda, and hear the deep growl reverberate through the theater (although I'd been hoping to hear Godzilla's roar).

Easily the most fun Ive had at the theatre all year. Huge, bombastic fun, without all the plot holes and butchered logic of Trek or Superman. I can't wait to see it again.

And if there's any film this summer that deserves to be seen on the big screen - this is it.

Excuse me while I soak in all these sweet, sweet conservative tears.

Awesome movie Frem, a true tribute to those old B movies - and how!

What I didn't expect was how funny the other characters were, even Idris Elba had some lol moments. Don't touch me!

The sight gags were spot on as well. Just all around good fun!
