Heard on news that Stallone is planning on expanding the franchise, to include women action characters.
I immediately thought of Summer Glau, for both Serenity and Terminator. However, the only 2 Iconic names mentioned were Sigourney Weaver and Milla Jovovich.

I can see how those 2 could be more well-known than Summer, but I might think few others would rank higher than Summer on such a scale. Should we help them out with recommendations?

Sigourney Weaver - Lt Ripley
Milla Jovovich - Resident Evil (as stated by the news I heard)

Summer Glau - River Tam, Terminator

Michelle Rodriguez
Sarah Shahi - Bullet to the Head (w/ Stallone), Person of Interest
Chloe Grace Morentz - sure, Kick-Ass might be her only action role, but she OWNED that
Natalie Portman - V for Vendetta, Star Wars, The Professional
Halle Berry - 007, Catwoman, maybe Swordfish?
Moon Bloodgood - Terminator, plus some others IIRC

Linda Hamilton? - Sarah Connor
Lena Headly? - Sarah Connor, 300
Jessica Alba? - Dark Angel, Machete franchise
Sarah Michelle Gellar? - Buffy - or is this not the right role?
Eva Green? - 007/Vespa??, 300II, Sin City/Dame
Jaclyn Smith? - 70's Charlie's Angels
Lindsay Wagner? - 70's Bionic Woman
Heather Thomas? - was 80's Fall Guy a butt-kicking role?
Ming Na? - is Agents of SHIELD her only action role?
Eliza Dushku? - a little in Dollhouse, Faith in Buffy & Angel
Famke Jansen? - 007 she was a bit lethal, right? anything else?
Gabrielle Anwar? - Burn Notice, kinda wasn't her stereotypical role, was it?
Grace Park? - Dark Angel, Hawaii Five-O
Rene Russo? - In The Line of Fire, Thomas Crown Affair
Kiera Knightly? - Pirates of Carib, Domino, any others?
Christina Hendrickson? - YoSaffBridg could do action, has she done other action work?
Angie Dickinson? - 70's Policewoman, plus some horro b-flicks she was kinda mean
Yvonne Craig? - 60's Batgirl? That seemed about as butt-kicking as chicks got in those days
Yvonne Strahovski? - Was she actiony in Chuck?

edit: Adds from following responses.
Geena Davis - Last Kiss Goodnight
Pam Grier - Need you ask?
Kate Beckinsale - need you ask?
Rachel Ticotin
Lucy Lawless - Xena
Jamie Lee Curtis? - True Lies? what say you?
Sara Butler - from her horror flick remake
Jennifer Garner? - Alias
Bridget Fonda? - La Femme Nikita? - correction: Point of No Return.
Angelina Jolie? - Tomb Raider?
Sandahl Bergman?
Izabella Scorupco? - Reign of Fire, Vertical Limit?
Renee O'Connor? - Gabrielle in Xena?
Lynda Carter? - Wonder Woman?
Radha Mitchell? - Pitch Black?
Lucy Liu? - Payback, X vs 7, Kill Bill?
Jennifer Lopez? - Out of Sight, Angel Eyes?
Yancy Butler? - Witchblade?
Jessica Biel? - Blade, Total Recall?
Jodie Foster? - Silence of the Lambs, Brave One?
Zoe Saldana? - Columbiana?
Helen Mirren? - RED?
Devon Aoki? - Sin City
Jennifer Lawrence? - Katniss Everdeen (Hunger Games), Raven/Mystique (X-Men)
Uma Thurman? - Kill Bill?
Carrie-Anne Moss? - Trinity in Matrix
Jenette Goldstein? - Aliens? not as much in Lethal Weapon
Maisie Williams? - Game of Thrones?
Michelle Yeoh? -
Zhang Ziyi? -
Rene Russo? - Line of Fire?
Gina Carano? -
Carla Gugino? - Watchmen, Spykids, Sin City.
Rachel Nichols - Continuum
Cynthia Rothrock? -

Any other suggestions?
Who should be listed higher than Summer?

Geena Davis - she was badass in Last Kiss Goodnight, and did that Pirate thing. She can do that withering glare pretty well.

If they're trying the capture the "feel" of Expendables, nostalgia has to be part of it. The Expendables movies trade on action movies of a certain generation -- some of them "washed up" -- mixed with younger, newer ones. Most are recognizable as, at the very least, "that guy from that movie," if not something more iconic.

Unfortunately, there female version of that is much more limited - Signourney Weaver, Linda Hamilton, Geena Davis... That almost has to be the foundation. I hadn't thought of Milla Jovovich, but I agree with that, too.

What would be interesting to me would be to flip the equation and take women from that era who are know for being "the girlfriend" or "the victim" and give them guns. (Sort of the Buffy formula.) In that case, Jamie Lee Curtis becomes your cornerstone (although she's arguably a butt-kicker, too), but there are tons of women from horror movies. And perhaps that's the key -- for women, I think you have a larger range of options if you look to horror movies rather than action.

Not sure why you would identify Eliza Dushku with Dollhouse and not as Faith in Buffy and Angel.

And if you're including TV shows then you have to mention Jennifer Garner as Sidney Bristow.

Not sure about horor flicks unless the chick kicked butt, but Jamie Lee might qualify from True Lies - any agreement?
Makes me think Sara Butler (IIRC) for her horror flick remake - maybe Last House on the Left? She did awesome kicking.
Anybody think Crouching Tiger would qualify?
OOOOOh. Pam Grier. She WAS a franchise.

Not in with the Faith so much. Was she action in those?

is Sidney Bristow a TV show?

I could mention that Terry Crews has been in Expendables, and I thought he was just some dad on reruns.

I agree with Gwek about Sigourney Weaver, Linda Hamilton, and Geena Davis being the base foundation.
Add Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez and maybe two more I have to think about.

Jennifer Garner? Yeah, probably. Gotta remind people she was Elektra as well as Sidney Bristow.
And her hand to hand fight in The Kingdom was downright brutal.

How about Demi Moore?
Angelina Jolie as the baddie.

Izabella Scorupco - Reign of Fire, and Vertical Limit? I think she was kinda lethal in those.
Lucy Lawless - Xena. Although I didn't catch it, this seems the iconic role they'd be looking for.
Renee O'Connor? - Gabrielle in Xena?
Sandahl Bergman?
Lynda Carter? - Wonder Woman? Is this the right type, or was WW too much tricks and gimmicks? Lynda could likely play a villian.
Rahda Mitchell? - Pitch Black, others I can't recall right now - she does some action, right?
Lucy Liu? - Payback, X vs 7?

Demi Moore from what? Striptease? For keeping Burt Reynolds' hands off her?
Angelina Jolie for Tomb Raider? anything else?

Demi for GI Jane and Charlie's Angels.
Angelina also for Mr and Mrs Smith, Wanted, and Salt.
Remember they need to be iconic also.
As much as I love Summer, she just isn't there.

Yet.
She could be like the new girl on the team, though.

Kate Beckinsale - need you ask? She's practically taken over the field.
Rachel Ticotin - exactly the type I've been trying to recall
J-Lo? - Out of Sight, Angel Eyes?
Catherine Zeta-Jones? - Zorro?
Jessica Biel? - Blade, Total Recall?
Jodie Foster? - Silence of the Lambs, Brave One - but not exactly iconic?
Yancy Butler? - Witchblade, Drop Zone, Hard Target?
Zoe Saldana? - Columbiana?

Terminator? Not iconic? Terminator practically defines iconic, and no woman in Terminator was more actiony than Summer. Without Terminator, Linda Hamilton wouldn't even qualify, and others have listed her as the top 3 iconic ladies, even tho the news story I heard only listed Sigourney and Milla.

I lost track, Salvation might have been T4. I thought Summer did far more than Moon Bloodgood or Loken, or Linda Hamilton in the Terminator verse.

Iconic actioners among actresses seems hard to come by. Wonder woman seemed iconic for it's time, but the action was mostly just tricks and gimmicks. You don't see Adam West or Burt Ward in Expendables.

I was trying to filter out as many action roles as I could recall, in case anybody thought they might be iconic.

Should we vote?
Anybody list whichever actress they think would fit, with the only 2 that the Producer already indicated as Sigourney Weaver and Milla Jovovich.

My vote is for Sigourney (no-brainer there) and Kate Beckinsale, but I gotta say that Michelle Yeoh is a great pick for that foreign flavor, as well as Zhang Ziyi, to add dragon to the mix.

Michelle Rodriguez, another no-brainer and Jennifer Lawrence for the younger set.

Hi JewelStaiteFan, for Rachel Nichols here's what makes her qualify for this film wise:

- G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (she played Scarlett)
- Alex Cross
- Raze
- TV Series Continuum

For Ms. Zoe Bell...she's a legendary ass-kicker and stunt woman famous for Angel of Death and Raze

For Magda and Luvia it goes back to the TV series Continuum

For Morena we remember her using a crossbow a little for Serenity but she's also about to have a little film called Spy come out.

Gal Gadot qualifies with her Fast and the Furious films (Fast 4-6) and is about to play Wonder Woman

And Rose Leslie for Ygritte in Game of Thrones where she kicked a ton of ass (especially with a bow and arrow). There you have it. Out!

I may have slept through GI Joe.
Women buttkickers in Alex Cross? Whodathunk?
Continuum - does anybody else think this was good? Clearly one fan thinks so, but if it was so good, how did I not hear about it so far? Do I need to check it out?
Never heard of Raze until now.
But Zoe Bell is the lead babe in Hateful Eight, looks like - so will she be whoring around, or killin' dudes? (the standard Quentin choices)

None that I can think of right away. It's about a cop from the future accidentally transported back in time, along with a terrorist group that were supposed to have been executed in her future. The terrorist group has a just cause, but their methods are suspect, and yet over time she begins to believe they might have a valid point about the government of the future.

I know there have been other time travel shows, but I haven't seen several of them, like Time Trax or 7 Days, and I'm sure there are others I'm not aware of. I can only suggest you watch a few episodes and see what you think. At the current time, there are no showings scheduled on Syfy, but all three seasons are on Netflix.

You mean there are still actual video stores around?

It's on Netflix Streaming, can purchased from Amazon on DVD, or rented/purchased on Amazon Instant Video (not free on Prime though), or rented or purchased on VUDU. Or, if you're so inclined, I am sure there are other alternatives.

I can see how those 2 could be more well-known than Summer, but I might think few others would rank higher than Summer on such a scale. Should we help them out with recommendations?

Sigourney Weaver - Lt Ripley
Milla Jovovich - Resident Evil (as stated by the news I heard)

Summer Glau - River Tam, Terminator

Michelle Rodriguez
Sarah Shahi - Bullet to the Head (w/ Stallone), Person of Interest
Chloe Grace Morentz - sure, Kick-Ass might be her only action role, but she OWNED that
Natalie Portman - V for Vendetta, Star Wars, The Professional
Halle Berry - 007, Catwoman, maybe Swordfish?
Moon Bloodgood - Terminator, plus some others IIRC

Linda Hamilton? - Sarah Connor
Lena Headly? - Sarah Connor, 300
Jessica Alba? - Dark Angel, Machete franchise
Sarah Michelle Gellar? - Buffy - or is this not the right role?
Eva Green? - 007/Vespa??, 300II, Sin City/Dame
Jaclyn Smith? - 70's Charlie's Angels
Lindsay Wagner? - 70's Bionic Woman
Heather Thomas? - was 80's Fall Guy a butt-kicking role?
Ming Na? - is Agents of SHIELD her only action role?
Eliza Dushku? - a little in Dollhouse, Faith in Buffy & Angel
Famke Jansen? - 007 she was a bit lethal, right? anything else?
Gabrielle Anwar? - Burn Notice, kinda wasn't her stereotypical role, was it?
Grace Park? - Dark Angel, Hawaii Five-O
Rene Russo? - In The Line of Fire, Thomas Crown Affair
Kiera Knightly? - Pirates of Carib, Domino, any others?
Christina Hendrickson? - YoSaffBridg could do action, has she done other action work?
Angie Dickinson? - 70's Policewoman, plus some horro b-flicks she was kinda mean
Yvonne Craig? - 60's Batgirl? That seemed about as butt-kicking as chicks got in those days

Any other suggestions?
Who should be listed higher than Summer?

So, I think I've caught up.

My original reason for posting was my thought that Summer should be included. I still think she would be in my to 10.

Who agrees?
Who disagrees, and which 10 do you think would be higher?

Does anybody recall Lily Collins doing any butt kicking? I was thinking that either in Priest or Abduction she did some, but I cannot recall for sure.

How about Archie Panjabi? She seemed to be the type in The Good Wife, but I normally didn't catch that show, and never knew if she produced, only gave off the vibe. Don't recall her doing any butt kicking in her other works. I didn't really consider soccer to be butt kicking, either for her, Kiera, or any others.

MOOSE

Adrianne Palicki gets another butt kicking notch for her new role in Agents of SHIELD.
Eta: I realized she wasn't on the list. I thought she was.
She was Lady Jaye in the 2nd GI Joe and also Wonder Woman in the failed TV pilot from a couple of years ago.
Also think she did some actiony stuff in the failed Aquaman pilot also from a few years back.
Hmmmm...I hope she has better luck with her SHIELD role.

And I need to add that Renee Russo also kicked butt in Lethal Weapon 3.

And Famke Jansen was Jean Grey in the X-Men movies.

Moose - good intel about Rene Russo. Her role as Det. Lorna Cole in Lethal Weapon 3 and 4 are the reason I placed her on my own list. Not to mention Russo played Thor's mother in the 2 Thor movies that have been released. And if I may add one more thing to Rachel Nichols' resume as an action heroine asskicker: Jennifer Garner was mentioned because of Alias and the fact she played Elektra in Daredevil and in her own Elektra movie. But also remember this: Rachel was on Alias too with Jennifer playing a major supporting role in a season. There you have it and until next time I am out!

OK, agree with Palicki for SHIELD, and also for John Wick.
