Interstellar or Edge of Tomorrow?
Or something like Guardians of the Galaxy, Lucy, others?

I think my vote must go to Edge of Tomorrow at this point.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

You need to edit the thread title, because I thought it was going to be about movies coming out two years from now.

At this time I would have to go with Edge of Tomorrow as the best SF film of the year, although the best overall is Boyhood.

Somebody's got 2016 on the brain!!!!! Unless you're running for POTUS!

Best Sci-Fi Film of 2014: Edge of Tomorrow

GOTG was good, but EoT was so much better.

Are we time travelling?

I will also go with Edge of Tomorrow. Guardians was a lot of fun, but was also very derivative of Farscape.

That was a heck of a typo. Thanks for the correction, it should look OK now.

First 4 votes are for Edge of Tomorrow.

Geez, I was just kidding but I still got nauseous typing that.

I'm going with Edge of Tomorrow as well.
It is a great movie.

I guess I should also list it, for DVD viewers, as Live Die Repeat.

It is a vote against the spambot posting. If it didn't seem like gnomish that I'm familiar with, I would likely have not clicked on it.

OTOH, maybe she thought she was in RWED and didn't want to instigate controversy with a vote.

Actually, we were busy when Edge of Tomorrow came out and I bumped this so I could A. bump down wacko spammer, and B. to remind meself to go and finally rent Edge of Tomorrow (had an errand to run anyway) and we finally got ta watch it this evening, yaaay.

It WAS good. They kept it moving once the initial setup was in play, the writing was clear AND SO WAS THE DIALOGUE, THANK YOU! I STILL can't look at Tom without thinking "He thinks psychiatry is bad and golden alien planes are good???" I mean, he's obviously not a neuro-typical and maybe that's what makes him so good at acting, but it just boggles me mind so it's hard to like him. I mean, I'm open-minded, but I still can't help but remove a few points....

As for which is better, EoT or GOTGalaxy....hmmmmm.... they both have something going for them. GotG had an element of unknown and a real sense of adventure and even a hint of magic, which is hard to do with a straight face and not leave half the audience behind....plus...yanno...it had Nathan in it

...and EoT had great writing and execution and was more accessible to a wider audience.

I think both were entertaining. I think deciding which one is better for you depends entirely on your ability for willing suspension of disbelief. I like stories that are closer to a possible reality with less latex, and my husband likes fantasy and make believe more, so you can probably guess who liked what more
But we both enjoyed BOTH movies....

I often try to cut him some slack due to the dyslexia. I know he is not the only person with it, although perhaps the most successful. But no matter how much success you have, that (as well as other honest learning disabilities) must be a hard hurdle to overcome. I try very hard not to look down upon those less fortunate than me, particularly when they make an effort.

I didn't mean that in a bad way, I LIKE non-neurotypicals (just ask Byte about that one). What I have a problem with is the joining of a group that is highly irrational and from many reports I have read is coercive and manipulative. I admit I don't get religion in general, but I get Scientology even less...

I'm going with Guardians of the Galaxy.

I missed Interstellar, was largely unimpressed by Lucy (great ideas and scenes, but sub-par execution overall)... and I can't help but think there's at least another contender or two we're all forgetting.

EotT/LDR was probably Cruise's best movie in years, and also probably one of the better time travel movies I've seen, but, for me, it ends soft. The second act is a delight, but once they move on from the McGuffin, the quality level drops considerably.

GotG, on the other hand, remains consistently fun throughout, and but also has nuanced writing, character relationships and thematic development rivaling the likes of Shakespeare and Whedon. :) Not only is is popcorn fun -- it's also an amazingly written script! That's tough to pull off, and it earned my respect with a rare three-peat viewing in the theaters.

Guardians was also quite entertaining.

It's not sci-fi, but it comes close to fantasy - Birdman is the best that I saw in 2014.

It reminded me a little bit of Cabin in the Woods, so take a whiff because EoT is the shit.

Wow. I've not seen EoT yet, despite my crush on Emily Blunt. I've heard decent things about it, but just not gotten around to viewing it yet.

I'll look for it on hbo.

I don't know the cause for your crush on Emily - I've seen her in numerous films, but not the Muppets. But her portrayal in EoT did endear me to her charms.

It was the interview rounds she was doing to promote the movie, is where she first caught my eye. Funny and cool as hell. Apparently she's getting rave reviews for ' Into the Woods', which sounds like it was up for some awards or some such.

Looks like I may have to check that out as well. It really has been the year of Emily. May it continue.

The 2-hour Pilot film Serenity won the Special Effects Emmy for that year. Everybody has copied it since.

Obviously I think it is or I wouldn't have said that. Your mileage may vary.

How is it that Edge of Tomorrow and Oscar Nominations produces no results?
Does nobody in Hollywood recognize the best Sci-Fi film of the year? They probably all think the government is about to shut down.

They gave some prize to Interstellar - must have thought it was believable.
They don't seem to ignore Sci-Fi, they just cannot recognize it unless it addresses mental illness, retardation, or The Gays.
