HAKEN

Likes to mess with stuffs.

Appleseed Ex Machina was awesome and had, in my opinion, the look of something between 'Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex' and 'Final Fantasy Advent Children.' Not sure what to make of the next Appleseed movie, Appleseed XIII. Here check it out.

I'm looking forward to it, but I'm kinda put off by it being a stealth reboot --it's not actually in-continuity with Appleseed or Ex Machina. Which is too bad 'cause the Aramakiverse had such a wealth of backstory and plot points to explore (Ex Machina seemed to show that the wider world was recovering from the apocalyptic war of the first movie --Olympus was no longer the only superpower).

Saw the first Appleseed on Netflix (on Frem's recommendation) and loved it. But I'm with you Haken on this one, don't know what to make of it.

Appleseeds okay - problem is it suffers from what I call compression issues, much like Armitage does although the latter is far, far worse for it.

Always seems to be a brawl between the folks trying to tell the story, and the beancounters, and so in the end, slash-slash-slash and you wind up with huge sections of the story missing, a lot of time due to this FAILING to tell the story at all, leaving a confused audience who don't know what to make of it, and the beancounters point the finger at everyone else for commercial failure - I hear Hayao Miyazaki is quite, quite rabid about this, and I can see why, since the scenes hacked out in that awful Macekre of Nausicaa were very freakin important to the ending making any kind of sense.

That's also quite notable in 12/13 episode (as opposed to 26) format, in that doing so involves a lot of montaging and hacking, and often as not comes to the same problem, Venus versus Virus is pretty bad for it, and Jinki Extend(1) fails almost completely due to it - one should not leave audiences going "huh" and "why" to the point where they disengage from the story...

Of course, given that the lesson seems to have been learned(2) and taken to heart since the original Appleseed, one can hope this one delivers a full story.

(1) - Nowhere, utterly nowhere, in the animated Jinki Extend is the *reason* Aoba's mother hates her explained whatsoever, which is a critical and integral part of the story, and it's not the only one missing, alas.

(2) - Not the only learned lesson either - one of the others being that folks will not pay $59.95 for 2-4 episodes on a DVD *waves to the wreckage of Geneon*, something Funimation has thankfully taken full advantage of.

It's generally a bad idea to assume viewers have read the manga for something, especially when releasing in countries where you DIDN'T release the manga, although that problem has also been much addressed.

So it's certainly worth hoping, the stories seem to get better and better - I caught a few of the first episodes of Spice and Wolf on Netflix over my ex's and it seemed especially well done, Holo is more crook than merchant, though...

You make some good points Frem. I could see the censors playing havok with the more involved manga and anime. Hence the "choppiness" of story and the cost-prohibitive pricing of DVDs.

BTW thanks for the little bit on Spice and Wolf, it looked kinda interesting. I'm gonna give it a look-see on Netflix.
