And her kiss with Kylo was mere gratitude, not romantical.

FFS, SW is now a dumpster fire.

But Dr Who died worse, imo.

The Duel of the Fates has a much better death scene without kissing.

INT. TEMPLE OF MORTIS - NIGHT

Kylo feels the very thing that destroyed Anakin. But doesn't make him feel weak.
He looks at Rey's outstretched hand...and TAKES IT.

THE LIVING FORCE FLOWS BACK INTO HER.

Both light and dark swirl within Rey as Kylo is reduced to an empty shell. A man without power. A frightened boy.

Kylo and Rey collapse into one another, each propping the other up on their knees.
Rey is close to him now. Their foreheads touching.
He is weakened, spent. In the last moments of his life.

KYLO: Solana.

Rey is stunned to hear her name. Distant, like a memory.

KYLO: Your name. (last breath) Rey Solana.

Those words are Ben Solo's last.

Rey watches the light dim in his eyes. But it is the light.

REY: Goodbye Ben.

With a look that could be perceived as love, BEN SOLO DIES.
Rey releases her hold. Collapses. Barely alive herself.

They've fought to the death.

Ouch...

Monday night's take: $33,836. $86 per theater at only 393 theaters.

I'm calling it now. It's official.

Joker pulled in more at the box office than a freaking main Star Wars movie.

lol

The YouTube nerds should have fun with that one for a few days once one of them finally realize what has just happened here.

Joker made 250 times more money than A Hidden Life (2019) a movie about the Austrian Franz Jägerstätter, a conscientious objector, refusing to fight for the Nazis in World War II.
www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt5827916/
www.imdb.com/title/tt5827916/criticreviews?ref_=tt_ov_rt

The movie A Hidden Life ends with this quote which proves it is nothing like Joker:

“...for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.”
- George Eliot

Downloading movies to watch them is so 2010.

It will also get you nasty letters from your cable company in 2020 too.

There is no trap, 6ix. You are confusing bittorrenting with downloading. I've gotten a hundred nasty emails (Notice of Action under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act) from Comcast over the last five years about bittorrenting, but they are never going to cut off my service. On the other hand, I've never gotten anything about downloading, such as the movie A Hidden Life. There is no trap, other than FOX Search Light, the film's distributor, will eventually ask mega.nz to delete the file for A Hidden Life. mega.nz will then do just that and the movie will no longer be available. It takes about 5 minutes to get the movie.

If you don't have a better option, just get KODI man. Insane amount of content on there and you're just streaming it to your device like YouTube so there never is a "download" unless you choose to specifically download it.

Not that I watch much these days, but I don't think I've torrented or even downloaded any movies or TV shows since 2012 at least. $40 bucks and 10 minutes of your time is all it takes. $25 if you catch a device on sale. Plenty of YT videos on how to do it, but look for a recent one since they're always updating it and making it better/easier. Back when I first did it, it was a huge pain but now it's so easy my grandma could do it.

Then you're not limited to watching it on your computer, and you don't have to put it on network storage to stream it to your TV either.

I can use google chromecast to send the movie to the TV from the computer. I also have a skystream, but I am a caveman who likes to keep a digital copy of every movie and TV show I have watched. Someday I might want to watch it a "second" time. I shall never watch The Rise of Skywalker, again. What a stupid movie. I wish Disney had made Duel of the Fates. It is a tragedy it was not filmed as big as there not being a sequel to Serenity.

When Disney remakes Star Wars 9 (and you know they will like they did with Mary Poppins or Cinderella or Little Mermaid or Alice in Wonderland or . . .) I hope they use the script for Duel of the Fates rather than The Rise of Skywalker.

Hey... if that's the way you wanna do it and it works, whatever floats your boat man. Storage is cheap these days. I hope you have it backed up. I lost all of mine years ago, but then I realized I probably never wanted to watch any of it again, and thanks to piracy and the internet if I ever did it won't break the bank like it once did. (Remember the days when a season of the Sopranos or X-Files selling for $125 on DVD?)

I don't blame you for not being worried about downloading it either. They put the kibosh on those crackdowns years ago. TPTB don't want things like that making people afraid of the internet, because it's better for TPTB if everyone is on it as much as possible. When is the last time you even heard the acronyms RIAA or MPAA in the news?

Still though, for me, I'd rather just stream anything on the rare occasion I actually want to see something Hollywood puts out. Why tempt fate, I figure.

If they ever figure out a way to completely disallow watching something without paying for it, I won't be sad that I didn't hoard it all when I had the chance (something that ruled my thinking back in the heyday of Napster). The price is right at FREE. If they want to charge me to watch or listen to anything, I'll take a hard pass. Plenty on YouTube I find to be infinitely more entertaining anyhow.

I imagine that they will reboot the entire thing before I die. 10 or 20 years from now probably. I wonder if they'll start with Episode 1 or go out of chronological order again. How much will be re-written? Will the casting make any sense at all?

DISNEY just pulls a rabbit out of it's ass...

Magically, Rise of Skywalker just made $4 Million overnight, even though the US Box Office on Monday night was only $33,000+.

Total Worldwide Gross:1,073,718,318

Now it's just shy of taking over Joker's Box Office by around $25,000, which it will easily double in the US alone on Deal Tuesday.

Liars and con artists.

Somebody at Disney read my thread here and decided to "correct" this by using some shady international numbers that nobody is ever going to be able to disprove.

I should have kept that to myself and laughed after it happened.

It still loses by around $220 Million after the production budget. Likely double that when marketing budgets are included.

Oh well... Sorry, Joaquin.

Yup... something really fishy is going on here...

Now the total Worldwide Gross has been "downgraded" to only $1,072,696,82.

And that now includes the $45k+ it made in the states on Deal Tuesday.

Just yesterday, without Deal Tuesday figured in, the WWGross was $1,073,718,318.... a whole $1 Million more than they're showing today.

With these "revised" numbers, Episode 9 is now $1,046,509 behind Joker's final take (not including what it made Wednesday night).

But who knows what's really going on here and if the numbers will change for no reason again?

I'm not even sure if there is any way that you could tell what countries it's still playing in outside of the US anymore. The only two that have reported any numbers since 2/29 was the UK on 3/4 and New Zealand on 3/2. It's quite possible that outside of the US the UK and New Zealand are the only other places still showing it.

Most other countries "stopped" reporting on 2/22 or earlier, leading me to believe that none of them are even showing it anymore.

France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and South Korea are the countries that last reported on Saturday, the 29th of February. This could mean that they reported their final week ending Thursday the 27th, or that they're still showing this week. Maybe a mix of both.

Internationally, it hasn't done very well... so any countries still showing it probably won't be adding much to the totals (significantly less than the already poor showings this week so far in the US, I would imagine).

So if no more "magic" happens, $1 Million would still be quite a hurdle to overcome with less than 400 theaters showing it, and Deal Tuesday surprising me by not even clearing $50,000.

Unless I'm wrong about international takes not leading to much anymore, Episode 9 would likely need another 4 to 6 weeks in the theaters to beat Joker, depending on how many theaters are showing it and how poorly it fares against the new competition.

With Wednesday Night added, the new total is $1,072,731,821

And now that we know Joker got an entire extra week in 72 theaters that went unreported until today, the new Joker BO is 1,073,747,331

Assuming Thursday's Episode 9 take Stateside to be around $35,000, that's
a whole $980,000 it's going to have to make to beat Joker before it leaves theaters.

And who knows? We might even get 1 more unexpected week of Joker in the theaters to slowly chip away at the gains.

Only time will tell if Disney lies about some magic money again to put it over the top, or if the film can somehow hobble across that finish line on its own.

My guess is a $150,000 take for Friday through Sunday night, and then an average of $20,000 per day during the week. With a high on Deal Tuesday evened out by a Thursday that's sub $20,000... In total, 1/4 of what it needs to make by next Thursday.

Once somebody at thenumbers figured out Joker was still in theaters it seems they're keeping up to date with it once again. Not sure yet if it's still going to be in the BO next week, but if it closed down last night that was a full 22 weeks.

That being said, it just bumped up to a pretty nice round number if it's over now.

Joker's current take: $1,073,750,538

Episode 9's current take: $1,072,763,023

For a difference of $987,515

Episode 9 pulled in $503,925 in Week 11, down from $762,516 in Week 10, which itself was down from $2,077,009 in Week 9.

If Disney doesn't pull any more shenanigans here, it looks like we've got a race folks.

If Episode 9 only loses another 34% next week like it did last week, it might have an easy time getting over the hump before being pulled. However, if it loses 63% like the week prior, it probably can't make it up.

UK and New Zealand are still the only two countries outside of the US to post new numbers since the 29th of February, so it's still hard to tell how much help if any it's really going to get internationally.

For comparison's sake, Weeks 9-12 for Joker went as follows:

WEEK 09: $2,528,476 -43% from previous week. (Around 450k more than Ep. 9)
WEEK 10: $1,468,751 -42% from previous week. (Around 800k more than Ep. 9)
WEEK 11: __$743,094 -49% from previous week. (Around 240k more than Ep. 9)
WEEK 12: __$266,462 -64% from previous week... we shall see

Joker took quite a hit from Week 11 to Week 12.

No doubt because Episode 9 came out that week and was busy making $177 Million at the Domestic Box Office.

We've entered the territory here where the Box Office is pretty weak, respective of where it was during Joker's run, so Episode 9 seems to have gained a bit of ground. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe that generally December is a pretty big Box Office month these days, particularly Christmas Week.

That being said, you can see that I already predict that Episode 9 is going to win the Total Weekly Domestic Box Office for Week 12. Not only was Wednesday of Week 12 Christmas Day, but Episode 9 came out the prior Thursday for previews and a full release on Friday, December 20th.

So not only was Week 12 huge competition for Joker, but it was against the release of Episode 9 itself which pulled in just under $180 Million in its first week.

Add to that the curious case that this is the 2nd time that Joker got a downgrade in theaters twice in a single week (This time from 201 to 120, again on Wednesday night). I'm sure that this has happened to other movies on occasion, but it's worth noting that I've never seen it before and now it's happened twice to Joker. (Highlighted like last time in Orange for Week 12). It happened on Christmas Day this time, so I guess that makes sense, but I don't recall any significant reason that it happened the last time.

Nothing really too exciting to mention for Week 11 other than Joker only saw one day in double digits compared to another three for Episode 9, just like the week prior. That seems to have been a good number decision for Week 11 for Episode 9 otherwise, as the per theater average was almost a mirror image of the prior week (assuming that's what they were going for).

Week 12 sees it only cut down to 269 from 393, however, meaning that it once again is showing in more theaters than Joker was and will most likely see a lower per theater average than Joker during the week even with stronger Box Office totals per day. Given Friday night's estimates of a $52,000 haul, down only 37% from the previous Friday, this was probably a good decision as well. TheNumbers.com already says that this is going to be a terrible week for the Box Office compared to last year because Captain Marvel was released a year ago this week and nothing in the theaters now will come close to what that movie grossed in its opening week.

There are quite a lot of Family-Friendly films in the theater now for competition, so we'll have to see if Episode 9 outright dominates Joker's fall this week or if it evens out.

After Week 12's drop for Joker, it remained relatively stable for the next 2 weeks, saw about a 40% drop in Week 15, then a huge boost from the Oscar buzz (that will not at all be mirrored for Episode 9).

This will probably be the only week where Episode 9 takes the Weekly Domestic Gross back from Joker for all of the above reasons given.

But at this point, that's not what it's about. We're tracking the remaining floundering days of Episode 9 to see if it loses in the Total Box Office take or not.

As of this morning, we don't know if Joker is still showing in any theaters or not. We thought it was gone last week, but then Wednesday night they put a whole week's worth of new numbers up. We also don't know at this point if Episode 9 is showing anywhere outside of the US anymore either.

CURRENT TOTALS:
JOKER: $1,073,750,538
EPISODE 9: $1,072,815,023

DIFFERENCE: $935,515

Thanks buddy.

I'm kind of digging the box office numbers right now.

It's giving a little bit of flare and excitement to the end of that puddle of blood and guts on the floor that used to be a horse that I've long since beaten to death.

Thinking the Wuhan death virus is gonna put a dent in the box office numbers , like MGM does? Switching the release date for 007 No Time To Die back to November was a curious move.

I'm not banking on it personally.

I think COVID is a convenient excuse for the movie industry. That's what they were blaming the BoP failure on, but Sonic came in well above expectations the following week.

We all know that the next 007 flick is a woke dumpster fire before it even comes out. Maybe they're doing re-shoots.

As for Episode 9, the weekly numbers are well under a million now. My guess for this week is around $300k-$320k. There's even a slight chance that it doesn't break six figures tonight.

Anybody who is still aching to see Episode 9 in week 12 probably wasn't going to be dissuaded by COVID.

Would you look at that... Disney fudging the numbers again.

Now it's at $1,073,629,813.

Hilarious, since it only pulled in $97,000 on Saturday and an expected $51,000 tonight. (Just as I predicted, a good chance that it wouldn't break six figures and exactly on track to make that $300-$320k figure for the week that I predicted as well).

But sure... That adds up to $810,000, right?

Fucking Democrats and their math.

UK still hasn't reported new numbers since the 4th. New Zealand hasn't reported new numbers since the 2nd. All other countries and territories have also not posted ANY new numbers since before the $4 Million was initially added out of thin air.

There is ZERO reason for this.

They added $4 million magically the other night. Then took $1 million away the very next night. And now they've added almost all of that back again.

Don't anybody believe Disney when they say that Episode 9 beat Joker in the Box Office.

They're full of shit.

And the see-sawing of imaginary Disney numbers continues...

$1,073,543,545

Still more than enough to beat Joker by the time it's kicked out of theaters, but $80,000 less than was being reported last night.

WTF is going on with this movie?

All Disney shenanigans aside, my predictions for the week are spot on.

Monday night was $21,611, which makes the total so far for the week only $219,976, which puts it right in line for the $300-$320k prediction I had made. (Deal Tuesday will probably be near $40,000, which should barely put it over $300k.

That being said, having only made $21,611 last night, the Worldwide Gross is now at $1,073,649,789, which means that $21,611 actually equals $106,244 when using Liberal Math.

That is, unless anybody believes that this flick made $85,000 in New Zealand last week. (Lo and behold, there actually was a new international report accounting for at least some of the inflated numbers. This is the first international reporting update that has taken place since they magically made an extra $4 million dollars appear out of thin air).

Still no new numbers from the UK yet, but if it's still in New Zeland I'm betting that it got at least one more week in the UK too.

Nobody else has reported since the 29th, and more than half of them the 22nd or before.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Deal Tuesday's take just barely cleared $27,000, which was a lot lower than I expected.

I thought, if anything, I was being conservative with my $300-$320k Domestic take for the week. But there's a great chance that it didn't crack $20,000 last night as I predicted it wouldn't, and if that's the case, it's going to fall around $13-$14k below my lowest prediction.

But with Magic Disney Democrat Math (or MDDM), it now sits at a total Gross of $1,073,697,067. No valid explanation at all for that additional $4 Million dollars, but Disney should keep a lid on the schematics for the machine they created that pulls molecules out of the air and creates cash. I do hope they make all of their employees sign NDAs.

We wouldn't want that falling in the wrong hands.

Joker's total is now sitting at $1,074,151,311.

It's still unclear if Joker got another week in the theaters after March 5th or not. It's probably not very likely.

There's still a difference of $454,244 as of Friday morning, March 13th.

With Star Wars unlikely to come close to $200k for the whole week this upcoming week and dropping from there, we still have a race if Disney is done pulling that shit.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Yup...

$18,707 on Thursday night. The night it dipped under $20k, just like I predicted it would last week.

So the total for the week was $285,961. $14k lower than even my lowest estimate.

BLAME IT ON COVID!!!!!!!!

This also gives Episode 9 the win on Total Week 12 Gross by around $14.5k, as I had predicted it would (given that Week 12 for Joker was the week that Episode 9 came in and dominated theaters and it was also Christmas week).

I'm going to wait for tonight's estimates to come in tomorrow before making predictions for the week and putting the graph together again.

My guess for tonight though????

$35-$38k.

That is, if everybody isn't terrified of going to the theaters now that the Pope came out and cancelled Catholic Mass.

Hmmmm....

Maybe people are staying at home.

$22,000 estimated for Friday night's Episode 9 is certainly less than I guessed it would be. Hell, I've probably got more money in my wallet than the amount it was above what it made on Monday night.

That's $12-16k less than my estimate was... Which is the amount I was off for the entire previous week combined.

It's really hard to tell though, because there is nothing new in theaters that anybody really gives two shits about. Number 1 is that new Disney/Pixar flick that already was going to do poorly before the panic broke out. There were three new flicks out this weekend that nobody expected to do very well in the long run. This week was already expected to be worse than last year since Captain Marvel had pulled in over $60 Million alone for its second weekend and nothing here is going to come close.

EDIT: Oh geez.... nevermind. Disney/Pixar's Onward is in THIRD for its second week with less than $3.25 Million!

It was expected to clear $20 or even possibly $22 Million on the low end for a solid 1st place.

Yup. I think people are hunkering down right now. At least, the family friendly movies getting hit the hardest here. People are still going out to see movies, but with this Friday estimate for Onward being so low I wouldn't expect it to make more than $12 Million for the weekend, which would suggest that 40-45% of families are staying at home.

P.S. I wouldn't waste Comcast's bandwidth downloading Episode 9 or hard drive space on my own computer. I haven't seen a Star Wars flick since Episode II, and I'm not about to start with that piece of trash.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Week 12 is fairly interesting since during Joker's run it was Christmas week as well as the week that Episode 9 first released.

Add on top of that it's only the second week in the last seven that saw Episode 9 in more theaters than Joker was in relation to each other, and we see a bit more Green on the right side of the graph than we've seen in quite a while.

Episode 9 beat Joker in total box office numbers in Week 12 four out of seven nights, three of them on the weekend. Due to the disparity in theaters showing the movies, this only translated in Saturday night being a stronger showing for Episode 9 in per theater averages.

On that front, Christmas day saw Joker cut from 201 theaters down to only 120 theaters, further solidifying Joker's per theater average for the rest of the week.

Episode 9 overtook Joker's Total Weekly Gross in Week 12 as I predicted, but by $15 to $35k less than I expected it to. I thought Deal Tuesday would see numbers closer to $40k than only $27k. The rest of the week went pretty much as I expected it would.

As for Week 13???? Well, who the hell knows now with COVID-19 panic in full swing. If I were Hollywood I would be suing MSNPC and CNN right now.

My predictions without the panic would be that Joker would easily have taken back the Weekly Gross from here on out. As you can see by the incomplete graph below for Week 13, Joker actually managed to make more money in less theaters than it did Christmas Week/Episode 9 Release Week by $11,000.

I was thinking that Episode 9 was going to clear $35k last night though, and it's only begun the weekend with $22k... less than $4k more than Thursday night. That's a terribly bad omen for the rest of Episode 9's run.

Joker kind of floundered here for a while. Making over $200k again in Week 13, then dropping to only $100k in Week 14, but then the Oscar Hype brought it back and saw Joker showing in over 800+ theaters for a while and pulling in over half a million dollars one week before settling back down to the expected numbers and dragging them out for more weeks than they probably should have gotten, comparatively speaking to other good movies that almost never luck into an Oscar Hype situation like this. Episode 9 won't benefit from that, and now with the virus keeping people at home it is looking pretty bleak at the end here.

And who knows? They're already saying they're not releasing any new movies for a while. Will the just keep showing old ones? Will they shut theaters down altogether? Hard to say anything a the moment.

After all of Disney's MDDM, the current totals are as follows:

Joker: $1,074,097,608
Episode 9: $1,073,737,774

Difference: $359,834

(You may have noticed that Disney's MDDM strikes again and adds double the $22,000 estimation for last night onto the total, so $1 = $2 in Disneyland).

If you had asked me a week ago if Episode 9 would win, I would have said certainly because of the magical money they're pulling out of thin air to boost the numbers. Now I'm not so sure. Who knows what the following weeks is going to bring to the entire industry, let alone this terrible, terrible flick.

I'm sure that Disney would have no problem engineering some fake last minute numbers on a scale this small since it was able to do it with $4 Million last week already with apparently me being the only person in the world to catch them doing it.

Estimated Weekend Take is up.

Friday: $22,000
Saturday: $34,000
Sunday: $20,000

Total BO: $1,073,791,774 (No new MDDM yet)...

Some international Box Office figures were updated as of yesterday, so it's apparently still showing in quite a few countries that weren't reporting it. That being said, I'm still unclear why the total box office hasn't been increased since yesterday when they were reported, yet there was a $4 Million spike that couldn't be accounted for a while back.

Countries that reported numbers for 3/14:

Australia (I know... not a country)
Brazil
France
Germany
Italy
Japan
Netherlands
Poland
Spain

New Zealand still hasn't reported since 3/4 and the UK last reported on 3/11.

With roughly a $306,000 deficit to what Joker made, it's very unlikely that it won't pass it at some point before it's out of theaters. Especially since making magic money appear will be a lot easier to do with up to 11 countries outside of the US still showing it.

No chance it will beat it by a Million though and get to $1,075,000,000.

So even if Joker didn't sell a single DVD/Blu Ray in the future, it still beat Episode 9 by nearly $200 Million when you consider production budgets. Closer to 2 1/2 times that with the marketing budgets on top of it.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

How Star Wars 1977 was saved in the edit.

Steven Spielberg and Brian De Palma gave the rough cut two thumbs down. “It makes no sense!”

It is a lesson on how the first Star Wars could have been as bad as The Rise of Skywalker.

Yeah. I knew the history of it.

If nothing else, had it not had John Williams composing the music it might not even be remembered today at all outside of the most die-hard nerds.

It was a fluke. An accident. But like many great works of art in the history of mankind, timeless beauty can come from mistakes.

But trying to compare the original Star Wars to Episode 9 is insanely disingenuous.

Episode 9 benefited from one of the largest franchise names in cinema that has been around for 40 years and made billions of dollars (a majority of that from merchandising outside of the movies... at least until the woke trash they've been putting out). I mean, to be fair I can take a step back for a moment and say that there is nothing that anybody could ever possibly do that would ever live up to the expectations. Ever.

(I know you're a fan of Tim Schafer yourself too, and you're probably aware that this fear is why he said that he has no desire to ever make a third installment in the Maniac Mansion series).

You keep forgetting how bad the first two Disney additions were. Specifically Episode 8 and how much it was hated, and then Solo doubling down on woke and being the first SW movie ever to lose such large amounts of money that there was no way to spin it as a "win" for the producers. (Although once it was clear that it was a loss the access media wasted no time asking the question "Is the day of white male lead movies finally dead?".)

Could they have put out a better end-product for Episode 9? I have no doubt they could have. Would it have mattered at that point? Serious doubt.

They had ZERO plan going into any of it. They had zero clue what Episode 8 was going to look like when filming for Episode 7 started, let alone any concerns about what was going to happen in Episode 9. And in the end, after constant script changing and dumping directors, they painted themselves into a really tight corner.

Lucas had a vision. Granted, his vision for the prequel trilogy was shit, but it was still his vision.

The only plan for the Producers at Disney was their agenda above all else. Even above money.

There were decisions made in Ep's 7 and 8 that either trivialized actions taken (and sometimes even the entire existences of characters) from the first trilogy. There was zero respect for the source material. They were going to do what they wanted to do, no matter how little sense it made.

Rey was going to be perfect. She was going to have zero obstacles to overcome, and zero character growth, because she is a woman and women are perfect.

Of course, in real life, this is not true at all. All but the most flaming, man-hating feminists out there realize this too, so except for in the minds of a few very delusional people the character of Rey is relatable to no-one. No man. No woman. No boy. No girl.

Rey is a basic bitch.

No offense to the actress, who I'm sure is lovely in real life. Flaws and all.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

That is bullshit. Beauty comes from tossing ugly into the trashcan. Or if it is painting or movie, scrape off the ugly and paint over.

In February 1977, Star Wars had grotesque story errors. Look at the video, again. The film was released in May 25, 1977. George Lucas was lucky to be only working on this movie. He had nothing to distract him from the upcoming fiasco/tragedy/failure/disappointment if he didn’t fix what he had done wrong during writing and filming. On the other hand, J.J Abrams was working on a dozen movies and TV shows at the same time he worked on his version of Star Wars. It sure does show in the final product. Abrams was distracted by all money he was making on his many side hustles.

The Open Crawl wasn’t right in early 1977.

1) The long and bad version:

The REPUBLIC GALACTICA is dead. Ruthless trader
barons, driven by greed and the lust for power, have
replaced enlightenment with oppression, and "rule by
the people" with the FIRST GALACTIC EMPIRE.

For over a thousand years, generations of JEDI
KNIGHTS were the guardians of peace and justice in the
galaxy. Now these legendary warriors are all but extinct.
One by one they have been hunted down and destroyed
by the sinister agents of the Emperor: the DARK LORDS
OF THE SITH.

It is a period of civil wars. Rebel Armies, striking from
fortresses hidden deep within the Great Rift, have won a
crushing victory over the powerful Imperial Starfleet.
The Emperor knows that one more such defeat will
bring a thousand more solar systems into the rebellion,
and Imperial control of the Outland systems could be
lost forever. To crush the rebellion once and for all, the
Emperor has sent one of his most ferocious Dark Lords
to find the secret rebel strongholds and destroy them…

_Luke_Starkiller

2) The short and good version:

It is a period of civil war.
Rebel spaceships, striking
from a hidden base, have won
their first victory against
the evil Galactic Empire.

During the battle, Rebel
spies managed to steal secret
plans to the Empire's
ultimate weapon, the DEATH
STAR, an armored space
station with enough power
to destroy an entire planet.

Pursued by the Empire's
sinister agents, Princess
Leia races home aboard her
starship, custodian of the
stolen plans that can save her
people and restore
freedom to the galaxy.…

Can you see the difference between 1) and 2) ?
George Lucas couldn't. Brian De Palma had to write 2) for him and browbeating him into using it.

In design and art it means finding, and therefore almost encouraging, the beauty in imperfection, and maybe even arguing that errors, damages and signs of aging are making artefacts more authentic, more interesting, and simply beautiful.

Art always finds a way and we don’t necessarily have any say in it. Take a look at these accidental strokes of brilliance for example. If you saw them in a museum then you’d probably think they were the work of some masterly and highly-skilled artist. But they’re not. They’re accidents, and they’re all the better for it.

Go back to bitching about Trump all day, every day. You're wrong about everything you say, but at least you're good at complaining.

Some might even say that you accidentally turned it into an art form.

A movie is a huge industrial product made with the labor of thousands and you are comparing it to handcrafted art made by a single person. Industrial products are not accidentally good. You have to work and rework until it is right. J.J. Abrams did not have the time to rework anything. That is why Star Wars was trashy; he didn't throw away the ugly and stupid parts; he kept it all in the script; he filmed it in all its ugliness and stupidity; he sent it to the theaters because he was too busy on his other projects: his TV shows and other movies being simultaneously produced during the years Abrams was making Star Wars movies.

Look at all the crap J.J. Abrams makes each year: www.imdb.com/name/nm0009190/
When does he sleep? He is too busy making money to make good art.

It's hard to argue with that point.

I think that perhaps we've hit the point where there is just too much money in movies. The same could be said of modern day AAA video games as well.

Everything is riding on them doing well, or at least having one huge blockbuster to save them from all of their huge budget failures, of which in both industries, there are a lot.

To big to fail isn't a concept based in reality. All of these mega-companies that have spent the last 5 decades buying up everyone else are all too big, and spend every second of every day on the precipice of catastrophic failure.

You want to talk about shit-canning trash?

Let's let the whole thing burn to the ground and see the good that springs up from the ashes.

In the mean time, maybe they can take this COVID-19 break that was forced upon them to realize that every time they push a Woke Agenda in their movies, they're playing with a box of matches in a warehouse of tanker trucks full of gasoline.

It might be a coin toss whether or not a movie is going to be a hit, but when you go woke you're slashing your own odds to 10% or less. That doesn't seem like a marketing strategy that is very sound in the long term.

2) The short and good version:

It is a period of civil war.
Rebel spaceships, striking
from a hidden base, have won
their first victory against
the evil Galactic Empire.

During the battle, Rebel
spies managed to steal secret
plans to the Empire's
ultimate weapon, the DEATH
STAR, an armored space
station with enough power
to destroy an entire planet.

Pursued by the Empire's
sinister agents, Princess
Leia races home aboard her
starship, custodian of the
stolen plans that can save her
people and restore
freedom to the galaxy.…

Can you see the difference between 1) and 2) ?
George Lucas couldn't. Brian De Palma had to write 2) for him and browbeating him into using it.

Almost feel bad for Episode 9 today.

Didn't even clear $7k last night.

That didn't happen to Joker until week 20.

EDIT: Wow. Just noticed that was $36 per theater on average. Joker had almost exactly 10 times that per theater on the same day in Week 13 at $359 per theater.

New Worldwide Box Office Totals:

Joker: $1,074,251,311
Episode 9: $1,073,798,941

Difference: $452,370

Episode 9 would have to average the same amount of money it made last night for the next 67 days straight and remain in theaters for 1 week longer than Joker did to beat Joker now.

If these were normal circumstances, I'd say that would never happen, but who knows how movies are going to be handled in the next few months. Will theaters be shut down, or just continue to show old movies with no new releases?

If the panic subsides but there are a few weeks before anything new drops, it's possible that Star Wars might have a few more monster weekends under its belt when people start going back to theaters with nothing new showing.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

Wow.... I see.

AMC, Regal and Cinemark are closing their doors now indefinitely. I don't see anything about an order to do this. I would imagine that smaller family owned theaters will try to keep their doors open because they have to, but since the big three are shutting them down now that will all but kill the box office numbers since they own most of the theaters in the country.

Yeesh...

Numbers for Thursday haven't come out, but here are Episode 9's numbers for Monday and Tuesday.

Monday: $6,756; $36 per theater
Tuesday: $2,465; $13 per theater

That's got to be the first time since I've been tracking that ANY movie had done worse on Deal Tuesday than the day before. Does anybody know the exact day that the big theater chains shut down?

While that alone certainly doesn't look good for our little race here and almost obligates me to put an astrisk next to the Joker win, something else funny just happened in the last 24 hours too...

Episode 9's Total Worldwide Gross just inexplicably fell again, and this time it fell big.

$1,070,284,160... down from $1,073,798,941 just yesterday.

Seriously... does anybody have any ideas what is going on with the Box Office for this movie? That's now $3.5 Million+ removed from the total. With the see-sawing of unattributable additions and subtractions this movie has seen in the last 2 weeks, that puts it right about where it should be before they added the $4 Million dollars out of thin air in the first place.

As it stands now...

Joker: $1,074,251,311
Episode 9: $1,070,284,160
Difference: $3,967,151

Its deficit just grew by 9 times. That's a difference it couldn't hope to make up in the best of times this late in its Box Office life, let alone while being crippled in only a fraction of the theaters that it should still be showing in.

Do you suppose with the Disney stock prices falling like a rock at the moment, people didn't want to be accused of obviously gaming any numbers?

Surely if a dumbass nobody like me saw all of that, somebody with a bit more clout did.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Holy shit.

Episode 9's Wednesday night take?

$554

That's not a per theater average. That's the whole fucking thing.

I'd say the Legacy Media has officially done a great job at scaring the ever loving shit out of everyone at this point.

Per theater average for last night was $3.

Joker never once dipped below $2,100 total in a night during its entire 23 Week run, and the lowest per theater average was $21.

I'm not even going to give the movie any more shit at this point.

On the contrary... I salute the brave young Jedi Knights who are saying Fuck The System and going out and seeing the movie despite all the warnings against it.

All 80 or so of them in the entire freakin' country.

Rather than compare Star Wars to Joker, compare Star Wars to Frozen II:

Worldwide Box Office $1,449,782,504
Production Budget: $150,000,000 (worldwide box office is 9.7 times production budget)

Frozen II far out performed Star Wars.

I'll spoil Frozen II: the big difference in the two Frozen movies is that Princess Elsa is frozen in Frozen, while Princess Anna is frozen into an ice sculpture in Frozen II. Switching frozen Princesses caused the ticket sales to increase! Or maybe it is ticket price inflation.

$1,449,782,504
$1,280,802,282
------------------
$168,980,222 (difference)

It's mostly inflation...

Frozen Domestic Box Office: $400,738,009
Frozen Domestic Box Office (adj for inflation): $448,472,628

=

11.9116774371158% inflation

Frozen II Current Worldwide Box Office: $1,449,782,504

Difference: $29,907,378

So... outside of the inflation making that a really close race, I'm going to go ahead and blame the rest of it on the difference in the Consumer Confidence Index for the respective years of release.

You know what Frozen III needs for a story? I do:

Princesses Elsa and Anna are both frozen into ice sculptures!

With two frozen Princesses it will make twice as much money as either of the previous movies.

For Frozen IV, Disney freezes a Prince. It will be as great as any Star Wars Trilogy.

Nah...

Frozen IV needs to replace every white character with a different minority like they did in the Broadway production that confused the hell out of all but the most extreme woke people who watched it.

It's a small world after all. It makes complete sense that Asian sisters were born from a black father and a Hispanic mother in Disneyland!

Oh. And there is no prince either. Just princesses marrying princesses and they'll have a baby together anyway without sperm because Fuck You, We're Disney, that's why.

Oh... and about Beauty and the Beast...

Beauty and the Beast (1991): $438,707,031
Beauty and the Beast (2017): $1,263,521,126

Beauty and the Beast (1991) (Domestic): $206,333,165

Inflation: 87.9664846899431%

Beauty and the Beast (1991) (Worldwide adj for inflation): $824,622,184
Beauty and the Beast (2017): $1,263,521,126

Difference: $438,898,942

Two other explanations as follows:

IN THE US:

Consumer Confidence on release dates of both movies:

https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/consumer-confidence

(I can't link the compare, but I can link the picture of it. Put in the release dates of November 15, 1991 for the beginning and March 17, 2017 for the end date).

INTERNATIONALLY:

Also, I'm having trouble finding data on when exactly it was that we began allowing China to license and show Hollywood flicks, but I'm confident that wasn't happening in 1991.

The "International" tab on thenumbers.com only even bothers showing Australia and South Korea on the "Top 10 Territories" and throws the rest of the money in "Rest of World", so the data is spotty at best.

It's extremely likely that China is far from the only country that screens US releases today that did not (legally) do it in 1991 as well.

Knowing the Chinese like we do in 2020, they were no doubt showing this along with every other US produced movie in theaters back then and not paying any money for licensing fees and reaping 100% of the profits off of them. Who knows how much bootleg money was spent to go see Beauty and the Beast in China in 1991?

Do Right, Be Right. :)
