Kraven goes nowhere, it seems dead on arrival

Red One is doing better than Kraven and Red One flopped

I didn't think Kraven would do this bad..I was thinking maybe they could do something like Venom pull something off, advertise maybe? but no

However because its a Japan studio 'Sony' you could argue its not a loss for traditional Hollywood / modern Hollywood, its a foreign studio

Strange contest about to happen seeing 2 Japan studio movies about to fight it out at the same time...but Kraven is Sony owned brand, they bought it from Marvel way back during those 90s bankruptcy when Marvel was poor. A Sony loss...while Sega is Sonic right, Sega Sammy Group / Paramount?

anyways still stupid for Japan studios fighting each other even if they are separate Japan studios

LOTR anime might also struggle, and people watch old films like Interstellar

as a franchise with the Japanese animation, the new LOTR only needs 133,795,000 to make a record of 2 Billion Domestic as a 'brand'

it needs 135,000,000 Worldwide to make a total of 6 Billion Global

1. Moana2 - $26.62M
2. WickedMovie - $22.50M
3. KravenTheHunter - $11.00M
4. GladiatorII - $7.80M
5. LOTR #TheWarOfTheRohirrim - $4.60M
6. RedOneMovie - $4.48M
7. #Interstellar - $3.32M

Are audiences rushing to the theaters for Xmas to see Small Things like These? They are not.

But they could stream the movie to their TV, if they didn’t want to travel during a blizzard.

Or they could bittorrent the movie with this link:

Multiple reviewers commented on the moral storytelling, which comes across as "a sort of anti-Christmas Carol." Kirkus called the book "a stunning feat of storytelling and moral clarity." The Herald said the book "assures us we are all capable of doing the right thing, and that goodness, like misery, can be handed on from man to man."

This depth of the book surprised some reviewers, given that Small Things like These is a quick read that could be considered a novella given its length. Associated Press noted, "Keegan's economy of prose is a marvel ... The book takes just an hour or so to read, (film: 99 minutes) but you still feel like you know Bill Furlong by the end and understand why he does what he does. His tale of quiet heroism doesn't require any more words."

it won't be saved by Chinese numbers

China seems to like only pre-packaged Hollywood action brands already established, Hollywood live action movies where they know what to expect, no DEI political transexual messages...those films risk censorship across the rest of the world which is kind of 'conservative'
the successful ones released in China have been already established action packed movies

Maxtime Pictures’ “Her Story,” a comedy-drama film told from a largely female perspective, topped the mainland China box office for the fourth consecutive weekend.
The box office remained sluggish despite a few new releases, with Hollywood holdover “Moana 2” dropping out of the top five and Sony’s “Kraven the Hunter” making a modest debut.

Sony did however buy Spider-Man for cheap in the 90s when Marvel was going bankrupt

they will probably continue pushing films

maybe even tv shows, they possibly still see potential in a 'Sinister Six' universe or whatever they have planed

"Roar?"

I remember when they tried saying The Little Mermaid cost $200 Million to make, and then it came out that it was at least $250 Million, but they can't verify all the costs of reshoots since they didn't have to report that for their foreign tax breaks.

MSN says this cost at least $200 Million. Google AI says it cost $250 Million.

What's our number one rule on breaking even?

It's a coin flip you'll break even if you only manage to make 80% to 99% of your production budget back on your worldwide opener.

$180 Million is nothing to roar about. Not when it cost $20 to $70 Million or more above that just to film the movie.

If that's all it makes on opener, it's pretty likely it won't reach the $625 Million it needs to break even when it comes out that it cost at least $250 Million to make.

Don't believe the hype.

Anything they made so far in 2024 just barely offset their losses from last year. And they've still got a lot of money to lose with Snow White and black Captain America.

Don't forget the future landfill waste of licensed toys that that can't be sold by the millions at bargain bin prices at Ollies. Or the fact that Disney paid billions for Star Wars and has lost more money on it than it's made after you add in all the TV shows.

And Marvel is basically on life support.

I think this year is a good teaching moment for Disney. People will still go out and see things they make if they give the audience what they want and stop preaching to them all day.

I guess the other lesson is that people can be pretty forgiving after you start doing right and work to earn their trust back.

You know, 6ix, Disney brings in more ticket money from its amusement parks than all of Hollywood (including Disney) brings in from all its movie theater ticket sales. Unlike movies, with their unpredictable, erratic ticket sales since the days of silent movies, then talkies, then Technicolor, then THX Sound -- Disney amusement parks are predictable.

And Marvel comic book movies have gone out of fashion as have cowboy movies, which wore out their novelty with audiences as comic books are wearing out, right now. This sentiment of yours, 6ixStringJack, is a load of crap leftover from digesting Trump, eating what he served you: "I guess the other lesson is that people can be pretty forgiving after you start doing right and work to earn their trust back." The cowboy movies probably will never be as popular as they once were, regardless of how hard Hollywood works to earn your trust back.

Being available for free at home on TV will inevitably cut theater ticket sales worldwide.

Also cutting deeply into ticket sales is the knowledge that very soon a perfect copy, rather than a pirated copy, will be available.

Until they ruined that with dudes dressing up as princesses, and dumping over $4 Billion on a Star Wars themed hotel that nobody is going to see. Did I hear that already got torn down, or they're planning in tearing it down?

Disney is in trouble. It's why it's doing things like selling MSNBC, paying court settlements to Trump and making Joe and Mika kiss the ring.

Nobody cares that they made a few bucks off their increasingly unaffordable parks that nobody wants to go to anymore because the "magic" is gone. A fight breaks out in the park nearly every day and they stopped caring at all about the user experience.

Yup. Happened years ago and they just noticed it now. Something else that has cost them a few billion over the years.

Westerns and Comic Book superheros are a little bit different.

They can make money if they only release one super hero movie a year or two instead of five. Those movies also have to be good.

Deadpool & Wolverine just shut your entire argument down this summer.

Make more Deadpool & Wolverine, and less Birds of Prey, Madame Web and The Marvels.

Also, it doesn't matter what you think about it when Disney knows what they need to do to make money going forward.

They cancelled the Blade movie that was going to be a failure. They've also spent TONS of money on multiple reshoots of black Captain America, with the last session of reshoots jamming white Captain America back into it.

The money that they're going to lose in 2025 on black Captain America and brown Snow White are going to eat up what very little profit Disney made in 2023 after covering for the $1.5 Billion in losses they had in the box office in 2022, and cause another $1 Billion+ deficit for them next year.

They should have just shelved both of them and wrote them off for taxes.

Wicked certainly will be the one thing I got wrong about Hollywood this year.

It's currently sitting at $533,730,420 worldwide. Many months back I did assume this would be one of the movies to displace the three Chinese movies, but then for some reason I can't recall, I changed my mind on that. It wasn't the reviews, since even people on YouTube who have to go see shitty movies all the time said that even though it wasn't made for them because they're hetrosexual men, the movie was made well and wasn't a woke shitshow.

Anyhow... Not only will it make money, but it's probably made enough on the first installment that they don't have to worry about making the $875 Million they'll need to break even on the two of them with that $350 Million budget.

It's still got some gas in the tank. $600 Million might be possible for this one. And in that event, even with a huge dropoff from the first movie it should have no problems clearing the additional $275 Million plus inflation they'd need to start turning a profit here.

As for the Top 10?

It's a heart breaker on the Venom 3 there. It's in 10th place right behind YOLO, and it's just a little more than $4 Million away from bumping YOLO down. It made $20,000 yesterday, so I doubt very much it beats YOLO unless Bruce finds a ton of money in the international couch cushions.

Gladiator II, a big loser despite making more than I thought it would, is sitting right at $400 Million now. It had its second sub-million day this week, and there's even more competition coming out this weekend. I doubt very much it has another $59 Million left in the tank.

Sonic 3 isn't likely to do it. The first movie only grossed $300 Million worldwide and the 2nd movie grossed $400. But hey... if it keeps that pattern up, we're looking at $500 Million on this one and it will easily displace YOLO.

Mufasa? Who knows. I'm seeing all sorts of terrible reviews for it and I've even now seen articles saying that Sonic 3 is going to beat it.

That leaves us with what's left on the Release Schedule for next week...

An A24 movie? Nope. A Searchlight Pictures movie? Nope. A Focus Features movie? Nope.

The Fire Inside? Nope.

That's all folks.

2024 ends with one Chinese movie on the Top 10 list for the year. Considering how bad 2024 was for Hollywood, that's not a bad outcome.

Wow. It made only $3.3 on Preview Thursday.

You'd have to go down to probably the mid-teens or even in the twenties now on the Top 100 list for 2024 to get another preview number that small. I wonder how it's doing internationally because it's already dead here.

Disney’s ‘Mufasa’ Bomb Signals Disaster for Rachel Zegler’s ‘Snow White’

https://cosmicbook.news/disney-mufa-bomb-snow-white-disaster

Quote:

Disney’s only hope for Snow White is that the female audience turns out, as they did in large numbers for Barbie and, to a lesser extent, for Wicked. While the trailer for Wicked has received a significant number of dislikes on YouTube, the likes outnumber the dislikes by more than double.

In contrast, the most recent Snow White trailer has dislikes outpacing likes by nearly 30 to 1. Barbie trailers, on the other hand, garnered plenty of likes and hardly any dislikes. Rachel Zegler seems to be on the same level as Brie Larson (The Marvels lost Diney $200M) when it comes to its target audience, meaning they don’t like her and don’t show up.

That's awesome. $10 Million for Mufasa on opening night after you remove the $3.3 Million in previews.

Consider this just a little reminder of what's to come if you don't fix your company now, Bob.

as bad as it is for the Disney Marvel and comicbook thing and WB / DC decline, the movie 'Spider-Man No Way Home' was a big hit,
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 was ok and made some money, Deadpool & Wolverine was a huge hit...maybe they do still make money, we know the tv and comics don't sell anymore and a getting beaten by SKorea shows and Japan toons. However one of the Marvel's Spider-Man games was one of the best selling games of all time, there was a Batman game that sold very high. The tv show 'Penguin' is highly rated.

but all is not well, the comicbook genre as a whole seems kind of dead now, it will never be as big as it used to be. Post Weinstein scandal and MeToo Marvel is not immune Jonathan Majors being fired from his role as Kang the Conqueror

Even with some big hits as a total its still dying, so MCU Phase Six (2025–2027) probably the end, nu-Blade seems dead on arrival.

next year with 'Snow White' could be one of their worst

and for some strange reason some of the studios are still pushing the whole SJW DEI tranny political stuff even though people know its dead

2024 was so bad that Japanese are confidently pushing stuff like 'Chainsaw Man' ....I don't nkow, I think Japan has it wrong here...I can't see it selling in US cinema, the animation looks poor and the story is weird

an impoverished teenager makes a deal with a small demon dog, it fuses his body with that of a dog-like Devil, the teenagers head turns into a Chainsaw and his arms become Chainsaws, it is classed as Comedy horror, Dark fantasy. I don't see this selling so it will be a loss for the Japan studio but the fact Japan thinks it can take on Hollywood with these types of trashy gorey anime must mean they see Hollywood as very weakened now.

However it is a hit, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time maybe for its shock value or 'Gore'? series is set in 1997, in an alternate timeline where the Soviet Union still exists and Devils or Akuma are born from human fears, the Teen with this devil chainsaw dog inside him now joins a team of governmental approved Devil Hunters, there are groups who seek to steal Denji's power, including the yakuza, the writers of the Manga comicbook and tv show were already know for hits such as 'Fire Punch' and 'Attack On Titan' and also Vinland Saga and Jujutsu Kaisen.

We know South Korean director Bong Joon-ho has come to US Cinema and is expected to do well with Mickey 17, will there be any other Korean arrivals Dark Nuns supernatural religious horror it seems to be only a local release in SKorea, so is the Korea wave over before it started?

Will Cinema in 2025 also be showing re-runs of old US movies?

However as strange as it is to think of foreign film beating Hollywood on their own turf or Japan anime outselling Hollywood, Demon Slayer was a huge hit, a Budget $15.7 million and a Box office $507.1 million. Godzillia Minus One had a Budget 10–15 million and a Box office 114-116 million

You know that phrase "the house always wins", big guys like Disney and WB survive the Fed will just ask Blackrock and Vanguard to print off more tax payer money and bailout their failures.

'Sony' is outside of this gang

and the smaller studios could be losers and bankrupt if there is any economic honesty out there.

There's no more money to print out for them right now.

That's their big problem, and it's a 2-part problem.

They didn't realize that their audience was going to get picky because it had been so long since their audience didn't have money to spend on their shit.

And at the same time all the Venture Capital dried up. There's no money left to print up for them and nobody wants to give them a loan.

This goes beyond just the woke shit to pure incompetence. Stock holders and even board members want to know why Kathleen Kennedy is still running Lucasfilm. They want to know how they only released 3 movies in 2024 and the 3rd one is a major bomb which many, many others knew was going to flop when it was announced.

These are all decisions that bar you from getting loans when the money is working right.

As I said several times, I thank Joe Biden* for ending all the woke bullshit. We couldn't have done it without his idiot administration trashing everything.

Not really though.

Using the US Box Office is usually just a way for somebody to write a positive article about something they want to write a positive article about. The money is the money, and that's all they care about. That includes the international box office.

Moana 2 will be sitting very safely above $800 Million this week. It will probably see its first sub-Million day in the states this week. I do see what you're talking about with the daily totals though. M2 came out a week later and is falling sharper in the US than Wicked is.

I wonder what will happen on Christmas break when the kids are off, regarding these two movies. I can't even guess which movie will have the higher US Box office in the end. Is Moana 2 really dead or will it get a huge bump when the kids are off school?

I doubt very much Wicked could ever make enough money to offset the complete lack of interest for it outside of the US. Wicked's Domestic share is 67.1%. Moana 2's is only 45.3%.

There are reasons movie ticket sales are declining all over the world:

1) Free on TV is cheaper than buying theater tickets. Snacks are cheaper and tastier at home, too!

2) Movie theaters seating is not as comfortable, convenient and clean as your sofa and the screen on your TV is better than the one at the theater.

3) Most Hollywood movies aren’t particularly good, but that has always been true. Now that movies are free, most of the audience has no psychological need to claim a bad movie is good in order to not look foolish for buying a ticket.

This movie was already a big failure weeks before this dropped.

They may as well have left Denzel's gay kiss in it.

The movie shouldn't have even had black people in it in the first place, but why not go all out and make him gay too if your movie is going to bomb at the box office and you knew that it was going into it.

There weren't many black people there and then, but there were plenty of homosexuals.

So, hilariously ironically, in their panic-induced attempt to "de-wokify" Gladiator II in post, they've made the movie even less historically accurate than it already was going to be.

I just now realized that Disney almost had the Top 3 movies worldwide in 2024.

Moana 2 just crossed $800 Million yesterday, and managed $4 Million on Monday. Christmas break appears to be very kind to Moana, since it looked like Moana was due for its first sub-Million day this week. We'll have to see what happens on Thursday.

Moana 2 needs $165 Million to take 3rd place from Despicable Me 4.

All of the sudden I find myself rooting for Wicked.

Also note, Mufasa is currently in 42nd place for 2024. I would not be surprised if it doesn't manage to crack the Top 15. It might not even crack the Top 20.

Bruce still hasn't put up the production budget. Normally this is strange for a big budget movie, but I know I noticed this with one or two other blockbusters late this year. In the 2+ years I've been paying attention, it's only the low-budget stuff from places like A24 or Focus Features who don't have a confirmed budget almost immediately. Being 5 weeks into release without a solid production budget number leads me to believe that they're doing whatever they can to hide that info as long as possible, and maybe even move some numbers around to make it look like this wasn't a loss.

At $165 Million, it needs $412.5 Million to break even, and it will do that easily by the end of the weekend. It still won't make anybody much money, but there won't be any losers.

At $250 Million, it needs $625 Million, which it will never get.

At $310 Million, it needs $775 Million to break even and is going to lose around $300 Million for Paramount.

Film reviewer Roger Ebert wrote this in 1990:

"When I go to the movies, one of my strongest desires is to be shown something new. I want to go to new places, meet new people, have new experiences. When I see Hollywood formulas mindlessly repeated, a little something dies inside of me: I have lost two hours to boors who insist on telling me stories I have heard before."

https://collider.com/best-horror-movies-of-all-time-roger-ebert/

Why is Hollywood doing poorly? It is an old problem, but audiences get harder to please as they get more familiar with the products Hollywood routinely produces. Many movies were already tediously unsatisfying in 1990.

I don't disagree. I barely watch any of it and stopped watching most of it before woke was even in the public lexicon.

This is probably the problem that let Woke in, in the first place. I've said that many times before.

Like, how could you ruin Terminator with Dark Destiny when you already ruined it with T3 and a few other non-woke bad movies? How could you ruin Indiana Jones with Dial of Destiny when you already ruined Indiana Jones with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? If a woke Matrix came out (maybe it did with the 4th one, i dunno) I'd be saying the same thing and asking how can you ruin the Matrix when you already ruined it with the 2nd and 3rd movies?

Hollywood had plenty of creativity problems because the model is fucked. They stopped taking any chances by the mid-90's and remade everything that was even just a little bit popular from the past. (Does anybody remember The Mod Squad movie? No? I didn't think so.)

So I dunno... After 20 or so years of being stagnant yet still making boatloads of cash to make them continue to stagnate because that's the best for the bottom line, they decided to take wild chances and cram every unpopular idea into everything they made for 5 years straight and now nobody wants to go and see practically anything they do anymore.

I wish them luck. It seems like they finally got the message about the woke bullshit and that won't be a factor anymore... at least not now. But they still have some major underlying creativity issues that they need to figure out if they're going to get back to making money consistently.

My biggest advice is what it always has been. Kill those budgets. At most, there should only be one or two or maybe even 3 movies in a single year that cost over $100 Million to make. These should be MAJOR EVENTS that all make a lot of money. All of the rest of the movies should be somewhere around $50 Million to make at maximum.

And even if you do all that there's still work to be done shaving down the budgets.

Japan can put out that awesome looking Godzilla flick on a $15 Million budget, yet Gladiator II cost over $300 Million to make?

Shameful.

P.S. Need a place to start when shaving those budgets? Start with the actor's salary. Nobody should be making more than a million bucks to star in a movie. Most of them are going to run out of money like Harrison Ford no matter how much you give them anyhow. I'm sure they'll be just fine if they get a pay cut.

I might watch Kraven, I think Sony put the first 10 mins online for free and from what few mins I seen for free its not terrible it actually looks like entertainment but it flopped bad.
Form what I seen of the film it did not deserve Madame Web numbers

but they didn't advertise it like Beatlejuice or Twisters also failed, how to market? and if they had at least built up the comicbook character like 'Venom' it could have been an ok action film.

China might stay in the global top10?

Sony's Kraven the Hunter grossed an estimated $685K on Christmas Day

Yeah... Pretty confident that YOLO is going to fall at number 10 on the Top 10 this year.

Really though, not a bad result for Hollywood at all considering how bad most of 2024 was once you journey too far out of the Top 10. Beetlejuice 2 obviously made money at number 14, but Gladiator 2 might have lost over $300 Million depending on the actual budget, and it's sitting at number 15. I'm not saying that all the movies under Gladiator 2 were a failure, but just stating that you don't have to go too far out of the Top 10 to find a major multi-hundred-million-loss because of these stupid production budgets is all.

Interesting note on Kraven, Jaynez. I haven't even heard anybody say "awwww... it's not that bad" simply because I think even most of the YouTubers that would have usually gone to see this also skipped it entirely too.

Shame for the main actor if his movie flops and it wasn't that bad, but I'm still probably not going to watch it unless you have some real high praise for it when you're done.

Who knows? Maybe Kraven turned into a hidden gem on accident and would have done gangbusters back in 2019.

I know one thing I've always wanted more of in Super Hero movies was interesting, smaller-scale stories that don't always end with a gigantic space laser about to destroy Earth. The kind of movies they made all the time before The Avengers, as well as the mostly-good Netflix Marvel TV shows before Disney ruined all of that. Particularly the amazingly good first season of Jessica Jones.

This is something that SONY has always done from the beginning with their Marvel movies dating back to the late 90's, many times excellently and some of those even without Spider-Man making an appearance. How many SONY Marvel movies can you name where the end of the world was at stake?

I'd guess that half of the Disney Marvel stuff would end with Earth being destroyed if we didn't have super heroes to save us. But on the other end of that I'd say that if Kingpin were terrorizing the people of Hell's Kitchen like he did in the Daredevil series in my reality, I'd probably know nothing more about what was going on in there in real life than any of us currently do about the car-sized drones flying over New Jersey the last month even if both Daredevil and the Punisher failed and were brutally murdered by gang violence.

Maybe Kraven is the white Westley Snipes' Blade?

I actually hope it is now. It would be hilarious if the best comic book movie to come out in the last 5 years was the one nobody went to see.

By Matthew Yglesias | Dec 26, 2024

Before I sat down to write this post, I was feeling pretty down on 2024 as a movie year.

A couple of big, event-y sequels that I was looking forward to — Gladiator 2 and Furiosa — were both kind of disappointing. The Marvel juggernaut seems to be on some kind of hiatus, and the one big superhero release this year, Deadpool & Wolverine, was dreadful. Last year’s Barbenheimer phenomenon seemed to presage a “we’re so back” moment for mainstream cinema that just never quite materialized. Even in the children’s entertainment zone, we got the “make a bad sequel to a beloved original” treatment with Moana 2, which was so commercially successful that we’re now surely cursed to suffer an endless parade through that expanded universe.

Yeah. The Moana 2 thing is unfortunate.

I hear that may have ripples impacting movie animators in the future too.

It was nothing more than an entire season of a made for Disney+ TV show, created by low-level TV animation employees, and then edited down haphazardly into a barely coherent story.

And it almost made a Billion.

Do you get what I keep telling you now, Second?

Your average person is an idiot. As long as you don't inject their lowbrow idiot entertainment with preaching and agenda bullshit, they'll keep paying to see crap made for idiots.

Hollywood will be fine.
