Did Jayne betray the Captain?

I think he did for the following reasons: someone gave the fed a razor to get free. Also, when they're in Whitefall and Jayne takes out one of Patience's men, he looks through the scope at Mal and just smiles like he sees how easy it would be to take him out. Later, he tells Mal the money wasn't good enough, but the Fed told him it would be money enough for him to buy his own ship.

I think it was like in Ariel where he takes the offer but it doesn't work out for him.

What do y'all think?

My theory was that Jayne was 'testing' the Captain, in a sense. Letting the fed go to size Mal up and see just how capable he was. I'm thinking if Patience and her thugs would have killed him, Jayne would have appropriated the ship, turned over the siblings and claimed his reward, or tried to anyway. Odds are the Alliance would have double crossed him as on Ariel.

I don't think he did for what it's worth. Only going so far as providing a razor meant that he'd risk being found out - if the fed had blurted it out - for little chance of success. If he'd deliberately freed the fed it would have to be combined with taking out Mal and Zoe when he had a very good chance to do so. The pilot sets up the idea in the audiences mind that Jayne can't be trusted but that's all it is at this stage- an idea

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

We can't assume Jayne gave Dobson the razor. If he was going to do that why not just cut the bonds himself and tell the Fed to wait for the appropriate time to come out of the cabin? Anyone trained for covert ops would likely have some concealed weapon, say in the sleeve of his jacket, which could be reached even if his hands were tied. No doubt Jayne was tempted, but I don't think he trusted Dobson at all.

Good thread!

In my way of thinking everyone aboard Serenity knows that Mal Reynolds is likely one of the smartest pirates that they could team up with. They are all aboard for separate reasons, but one thing they have in common is that they know an intelligent human being and a good, honest protector when they find one. The captain has that certain appeal that each one of his crew find redeeming in one way or another.

IMO, I don’t believe Jayne cut Dobson the mole loose. Something about the smile on his face whenever Mal shoots Dobson when they return to Serenity after they deal with Patients on Whitefall tells me he was glad to be rid of the mole.

Also, although Jayne contently tests the captain he knows that any deal made with the feds will certainly loose him the crew. He for sure is not a “people” person and none of Serenity’s crew would follow him into butter much less a bank heist. Proof of his lacking leadership abilities was during “The Train Job” when no one would follow his commands and the doc put him down.

BTW, just to add to the thread here, the space/western theme seems to be alive and well. Cowboys & Aliens has made a good chunk of coin at the BO and tells me that production companies are still interested in making these types of shows. Maybe in the not so distant future we will get our BDM2. Add a couple of big name stars as villains (along with Nathan & Adam & Summer) and the tale of Joss Whedon may continue forward again……I’m still holdin!

I don't think Jayne let Dobson loose. I think he would have been more thorough with the betrayal if that's what happened. He would have taken out Mal and Zoe. Turned in Simon and River. Probably would have had to kill Wash too. Would have been interesting to see if Book would have tried to take him out. Kaylee and Inara would have gotten the heck out of there the first chance they got.

Jayne talks a big game and makes it sound like he could do without Mal's conscience holding them back, but in truth I think he knows he's never had it better in his life than he does on Serenity.

I tend to agree with the idea that Jayne's role in the pilot episode was to show the viewer that he was a bit of a wild card, that since he's a mercinary we can't totally trust him, to show us that he could be bought for the right price, so we know to keep an eye on him in future. I also think the first episode did a good job of showing that Jayne is notorious for saying things that make people squirm, that are inapropriate, that are sometimes hy-lariously obnoxious and sometimes unseemly obnoxious, you just never know what will come out of that man's mouth.

What Would Mal do ?

Jayne's grin when he has Mal in the rifle sights is more about just being the big dumb kid that he is...he had just been "insulted", as Mal often does, about common sense...ie the in-ear radio bit..so just imagining taking out Mal with the sniper shot is Jayne's way of payback...he had no intention of going beyond that moment.

as for the Fed and helping him?...remember that the Fed had shot Kaylee..and as crass as Jayne could be towards her...she was his crew, like a close cousin and he'd gladly kill the Fed over her.

as for "the money wasn't good enough" line...that's actually a deepening of friendship moment..loyalty...very well played....wasn't that the money wasn't enough....it wasn't "good enough"...likely never would be..and on the day that it was...it would be interesting challenge of men, but it would also be because it would be a crazy life changing day for everyone...at levels they couldn't imagine.
don't confuse Ariel with this pilot epi...Ariel gave Jayne what he thought was an oppty to make money off the kids...who he saw as seperate from the ship family until Mal straightened him out on that.
man...! here we are almost a decade later still looking this deep at this little show..what the heck?! wish we had 5 seasons worth !!!

THESOMNAMBULIST

I've always watched it feeling that Jayne 'assisted' the fed in getting away. But indirectly so, so as to not implicate himself.
If things favoured the fed, Jayne could capitalise upon that, and conversely should things favour Mal then he'd be able to benefit from that scenario too.

When sighting the scope on Mal, that is a valid test sighting, using the features of an actual person to verify the focus, range and feature recognition is good enough for when the others show up. Much more accurate than focusing on some rock or shrub.
Can't say if this was the sole intent of Jayne, tho.

It is entirely conceivable that Jayne left the razor for Dobson. I sure wouldn't have cut his bands for him. Just as easy for Dobson to then not hold up his end of the bargain and turn on Jayne. Give Dobson the razor and make him do it himself, then that way there is plausible deniability if Dobson would be caught, and you are nowhere near when he does break free. If things go south, you can just shoot him.

I dunno whether this says more about our crew or about pirates in general.

I think that either theory, betrayal or not, is plausible and both have good arguments. I slightly lean towards the idea that Jayne didn't do it, but he could have and there is that razor business.
