It takes no time at all for me to answer.
Superman, The Movie.
Great writing, acting, MUSIC, editing, effects, ect. Richard Donner crafted an epic masterpiece of humour and drama that has not been equaled to this day.
Spider-man, huh? Close, very close, but the man of steel wins, I think.

Or does he?
Mine is just one vote.

You just described the exact contents of my purse Chrisisall

Ehh. I think X-Men 2 is better than either of them.

I'm gonna go with "Road To Perdition" with "Sin City" as a close second...

Is that based on a pre-existing love of the comic book, or do you just like the movie on it's own?

I would say "Sin City" (panel for panel, and word for word in a lot of areas) or "Ghost World". But "best" is subjective...are we talking most enjoyable? Best acted? Best cast? Closest to the story, look, and feel of the comic?

I still vote for "Sin City"

HHHmmmm....

I can't REALLY argue with "Superman," although it's all these years later and I still remember being traumatized by the opening credits, which were like, nine hours long.

1979(ish) brought us Superman, 1989 brought us Batman (also quite superior, as was "Batman Returns"), and 1999 brought us Spider-Man. I'll go to my grave saying Spider-Man was crap, but "Spider-Man 2" was way, way better than it needed to be. Just thumbs up all the way around. And no one wore their underwear on the outside of their costume.

"Road to Perdition" is another good vote, except the talent of the director far outweighed the talent of the guy who adapted the screenplay.

"Sin City" was a little TOO exact for my tastes, though still a good movie. I dunno, maybe that one needs more time to find its place in cinematic history. Can I vote for "Sin City 2" yet?

(Qs)

p.s. oh! does it have to be live action? cuz if not, I'd like to vote for "Cowboy Bebop."

A little of both. I am an X-Men fan, but I think X-Men 2 was a very good movie on the own. I'm also a Spider-Man fan but I didn't like the movie so much (although it was better than the 2nd). I'm not too big of a Superman fan, granted, but except when I saw them as a kid I didn't much care for them - I especially dislike the whole 'I'll use my powers to fly back in time and Save Lois' thing.

I gotta go with Tim Burton's Batman, but I've yet to see either of the new Spiderman movies.

GOD yes. I'd forgotten about Ghost World. That's one of my all-time favorite movies in general. Guess I was thinking more in the superhero vain. American Splendor was quite good as well.

The Crow - Hands down - That movie still holds up as far as special effects and dialogue to any movie out right now, and it's over 10 years old - After that I'd go Sin City or Spiderman -

Just my 2 cents

Ghost world is kind of a geek art film by Terry Zwigoff, based on the comics by Daniel Clowes. Stars Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson and Steve Buscemi. Really cool movie. Here's a good review:

Comic Book movie - American Splendour

Superhero Movie - Spiderman. It had flaws, but it was my childhood comic writ large.

I stand by the statement that Spider-Man is a Superman movie in the wrong costume. Spider-Man 2 was a vast improvement, but Peter took his mask off more than Daredevil does over in his book. It was crap!

The Incredibles. Hands down. Okay, so it's not actually based on a specific comic book, but there's no denying that it's a comic book movie -- and a damn fine one. It also manages the trick of remaining "family friendly" while addressing serious adult themes.

It's odd. Pop-Psyche always pigeonholes superhero fiction as "Male adolescent power fantasy", usually in order to dismiss it; but in the last three months I've had the good luck to read two novels which prove you can use the tights-and-capes set to reflect adult concerns.
Nobody Gets The Girl by James Maxey (Phobos books, 2003) uses comic-book scenarios to examine issues of guilt and responsiblility; while Superfolks by Robert Mayer (original publication 1977, reissued 2003 by About Comics) anticipates The Incredibles by presenting the life of an involuntarily retired superhero facing a mid-life crisis. I highly recommend both.

Superman II is a great film just waiting to be put back together! When (and if) Richard Donner puts back several KEY scenes that Richard (D'oh) Lester hacked out while finishing it, and fixes up some of the awful FX shots, it will be the truly great movie it should be. Until then, it is just a painful-to-watch mess.
