Hey All

I was just thinking about both the new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and the new DR. WHO and how they've gone above and beyond expectations and become really great sci-fi shows. And it got me thinking.

Aside from either a re-launch of FIREFLY, or FIREFLY: THE NEXT GENERATION or whatever, what's an old sci-fi show from your childhood or from yesteryear that you would like to see re-done?

Personally, I would like to see SLIDERS re-imagined. I picked up the first three seasons on DVD, and noticed something I didn't notice when I first watched it as a kid. The first two seasons were very well done. It really ran with the concept of parallel worlds and explored it to it's best abilities. And even at times when it was cheesy, it still worked. Now, most people think that when the Professor died that the show went downhill. But it's was actually right from the beginning with season 3 that the show took a huge downfall in quality. That it ignored the potential satire and became a disposable action series that ripped off whatever hit movie was out at the time.

But I imagine that in the right hands, that a new SLIDERS could re-capture what was so great about the series to begin with and really heighten the quality of the show.

And if they could get John Rys-Davis back, that would just be icing on the cake. I know to some he's either Sallah from INDY JONES or Gimli from LORD OF THE RINGS, but in my mind, he'll always be Professor Arturo.

So what old sci-fi series would you like to see re-done in the style of the new BATTLESTAR or WHO?

Hrm. My first reaction was Logan's Run. Cheesy show based on a mildly amusing movie. With shows like Prison Break and Lost, I think the right minds could reimagine a pretty cool concept.

I bet there will be a few Buck Rogers votes. Good luck filling Erin's jumpsuit.

It's funny that you should mention that. Bryan Singer was planning on doing a re-make of LOGAN'S RUN the movie. But now with the sequel to SUPERMAN RETURNS happening, that might take a while to make, if at all.

I have to agree with TWG, a Buck Rogers remake would definitely be something I'd like to see. Or Flash Gordon. Both are sorely in need of revamping. As long as they stay away for the Sky Captain style...ewww...

I'd like to see not so much a remake but a continuation of The Black Hole.

How about a Last Starfighter sequel or Galaxy Quest?

The list could go on and on. Space 1999, S:AAB ETC..

I heard that they actually did try to re-start LOST IN SPACE over at the now defunct WB. They shot a pilot of it, but they decided to not pick it up because I heard it was really bad.

Someone beat me to the Black Hole, though I would have to vote for a full redo on that one. I love that movie, but think it has serious flaws, like we could use less shots of Ernest Borgnine in zero g. And an actual ending. That would help a lot.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

My first pick would be The Time Tunnel, but only if done by an Universal affiliate like NBC, Sci Fi or USA. That way they have all of the Universal film library to draw from for the historical and/or futuristic backdrop scenes.

I saw the Lost in Space pilot - not abysmal, merely mediocre. Definitely not worth picking up. Certainly not when interesting material like "Global Frequency" was available. Sigh.

Anyway, old sci-fi shows...

You guys may not know Blake's 7 but it's about this gang of outlaws in space. The government is a terrible tyranny and they're constantly struggling just to survive. It's downbeat, has ongoing character arcs, the spaceship they live on feels like a member of the crew... sound familiar?

In fact, when one of the main cast was asked about a remake, he stated that it was already happening in shows like Firefly. But still, a bona fide remake would be nice.

There was this show back when I was real young on UPN 20. HORRIBLE production, cheesey acting... some dude in a robot/techno suit in the year 2020. The only thing I remember from the opening credits is the phrase, "In 2020, times are tough, but this man's tougher.".

I loved it so much, and I'd geek out if they did a remake. Actually, I'd geek out if I could even remember what the hell it was called.

Not actually a series, but I've been clamouring for years for a remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still.

After hearing the hype, I'd be interested to see Blake's Seven.

If someone wanted to, the Thundercats comics from Devil's Due would make an awesome TV revival, though it'd be more a sequel than a remake (starting several decades after the series ended, on a post-apocalyptic New Thundera).

Same for DD's tragically aborted Voltron remake. It was glorious and hard-edged, with the post-apocalyptic Princess and the character drama.

Then there's the tragic He-Man series from a few years ago. The one that was the mind-blowingly awesome cartoon backing a crappy toyline (five-million He-Mans and one random other guy). When the toyline crashed and burned, the show got cancelled with it.

Also, it's not an "old" show, but I'd love for some eccentric billionaire to re-hire RHW, Ethlie, Zack, Ash, and the original cast, and bankroll a good version of Andromeda. One with an actual budget, and where RHW is left alone to actually tell the story he was hired to tell.

I also call dibs on the inevitable Power Rangers nostalgia in a few years, when it comes time to do the more grown-up remake for the now-adult fans of the original. I'm not kidding. Strip away the cheese and the sentai-ness, and there's actually the core of a really good sci-fi story buried in there.

Regarding THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, that's one sci-fi classic I hope they DON'T remake. That movie has aged like wine into a perfect bit of sci-fi. It's aqctually more powerful 50 years later. That movie is probably the first sci-fi "classic".

I'd consider it blasphemous if they ever did remake it.

Is it sacriligious to ask for a remake of Tron? Hey if poeple want Logans Run then I want a new Tron (but still with a good story line) Love the original but I can imagine with today's cgi what they could do with the bikes, and all the internal cities. One thing I was always dissapointed in was the look of the main computer (but it was the 80's and the tech was new)

And since I'm bringing it up one show that had possibilities (but was badly casted and handled) came after Tron came out called Automan. I watched it, despite the cheese (and Dezi Arnez.) Like I said the concept was good, it just needs an update. And the guy who played Automan was cuuuute.

How about Manimal. Anybody?

I second Buck Rodgers. They're playing the 80's classic on Space and I can't watch without laughing now.

I think with the right cast and crew The Incredible Hulk can be done. A fave of mine I rarely missed. "You don't want me to see me angry."

Greatest American Hero anybody? (with Alan playing the hero of course)

Oooh, one I watched from the beggining until it went downhill Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future. That show broke my heart in a lot of ways.

If they got the right people, the right writers, I would love to see V redone. It got so bad and cliche in the end I stopped watching.

Maybe a REVISE of Max Headroom. I know Matt frewer is older and is playing in my new favorite show Eureka, but maybe a movie of the week. I'd love to see that plastic headed computer geek again.

There's a lot more that I can't think of right now, but with the way Hollywoods looking through the vauts for ideas, those are some I'd love to see them attempt. With the right people of course.

How about V or Alien Nation? Either one of those could be redone and improved.

Sounds like a show I vaguley remember called "Far Out Space Nuts", featuring Bob Denver of Gilligan's Island and another guy who kind of looked like the skipper. They were supposed to be preparing for a rocket launch and loading the supplies. The skipper type dude says "Dinner" and Denver loads the dinner. He says breakfast, and Denver loads the breakfast. He says "Lunch", but Denver thinks he says "Launch", and hits a button and the rocket takes off and they get lost in space. A wierd sci-fi comedy from the 70's where the writers had to be on something!

Let's see...Richard Benjamin was the stalwart captain, the rest of the crew I can kinda remember character names and traits but not who played 'em (hey--it's been thirty years and wish to gorran hell they'd put this...and When Things Were Rotten--out on DVD)Ficus was the 1st mate and was half human half plant (and doing a deadly Spock imitation ) Betty and Betty were the blonds, one was a clone but they didn't know which, Jean/Gene kept switching sexes or some such thing and they took commands from Palindrome who was assistant to The Head.

Please correct anything I've mis-remembered.

First thing I thought of when I saw this thread. Looking back ( and having seen 1999 come and go ) it's hilarious that the premise of the show was what it was. Maybe the new version could have another method for the moon taking off on it's great adventure.

I agree with you there!

So the general concensus is we need a funny sci fi show and definitely a remake of Space 1999. Firefly is a given and Lost in Space a cool idea.

I'd like to see Blake 7. I've never seen the original. This is how I found out about Firefly, through a dicussion like this.

Ok, don't throw stones at me please, tomatoes if you have to throw anything... But I'd like to see BSG have "guest appearances" of other space franchises. I'd like to see Serenity show up again, or Buck Rogers, or Voyager, Jupiter2, etc.

There was a short-lived series on British TV in the 80s called Star Cops - it was set in the near future (circa 2027), concerning a newly set up international police force for space.

The tech was very realistic - small colonies on the Moon and Mars, only one space station actually having artificial gravity (rotating of course) etc. It was a bit slow paced and didn't really shine, but the idea was good.

I'd like to see it with modern makeover, snappier plots and character dialogue a-la-You-Know-What...

On the whole I`d much rather have original new series rather than a rehash of old stuff.

Still, Blakes 7 might work. The BBC has had a lot of success with the new Dr Who and they have recently done new versions of the old classic SF serials `The Quatermass Experiment` and `A for Andromeda` so maybe they will think about it.
I seem to recall that a few years ago, Blakes 7 creator Terry Nation was trying to interest various backers in a follow on series. Wonder what happened to it?

On the subject of Buck Rodgers, remember that the late `70`s series was itself a remake of a much older 1940`s Serial/Radio series/Comic Strip/1930`s SF novel. There was an attempt to start up a new Buck Rodgers franchise back in the early `90`s which never came to anything, the whole idea looks a little tired if you ask me.

Anybody think remaking the original Star Trek series would be a good idea?

The only thing I remember from that show was the jetpacks and the Ark. Cool motorhome.

Didn't robby the robot show-up on that show?

Indeed he did.

Here's an old sci-fi show for you to ponder. I myself can barely recall this one but I stumbled across the wikipedia entry for it and it sparked some faint memories from childhood.

The show was called "Otherworld". It ran in the USA on CBS from Jan-March of 1985. It was highly promoted but the general public just wasn't ready for a surreal show since those were the days of the standard situational comedy. It would take 5 more years for another mainstream surreal show (Twin Peaks) to finally break the standards in 1990. (There's another that could be re-done too) But alas for Otherworld, it was buried and forgotten. Here is a link to the Wiki article about it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otherworld_%28TV_series%29

The plot of the series was that a family of 5 was on holiday in Egypt and took a tour of the great pyramid. When they exited they somehow found themselves in another world alike to earth but also vastly different. As a little boy I was captured by this idea and watched every episode before it was canceled. But after it went off the air I quickly forgot about it (as kids do). Then in 1992 when Stargate the movie came out I recalled the show from 1985 but by then I had forgotten all about it save only for some fuzzy memories. I wondered then, and still do now, if the writers for stargate had copied some ideas from Otherworld.

Maybe someone else remembers this show. It died a quick death and has been long forgotten.

Do not fear me. Ours is a peaceful race, and we must live in harmony.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Sounds interesting, but I have no recollection of it. But I wasn't watching too much tv then, because I was working two jobs, my wife was pregnant and due to give birth just shortly after that show premiered.
