Ok I have a theory on BSG.

Here it is....

First off somewhere down the line in the series Adama has to fly a Viper for some reason and is given the callsign Zeus.

Now....

They find Earth, but they find it several thousand years in the past. Now by this time they have either lost/made peace with or done something with the Cylons so they are no longer a threat.
So they find Earth in its pre Roman state and decide to make a life on Earth but not to bring all their technology down with them.
Of course they influence the primitives with their knowledge of medicines and so forth.
And that how we modernites have the gods....Zeus, Apollo, Athene, Hera and so forth, as well as the constillations Capricorn, Sagitarius and so forth.

Anyway just a theory :)

Or by Akums Razor (a.k.a. how it's stated in the show), since the 13th tribe would have had access to the same religious documents that they do on the show, that's where all the names came from.

This is, of course, assuming that the earth that is found in the show is our earth.

Nice Hitchhiker's reference. Concerning the original post, wasn't the Admiral's callsign "Cornhusker" or something like that? I watched the miniseries not too long ago, and for some reason that sticks in my memory. Oh well...you zarquon froods.

I've been thinking along the lines that when they get to Earth it will be several thousand years in the past as well. However, another thought I've had is that they are the thirteen tribe and that all this history is in fact prophesy. Either way some how they crash land on Earth and their superior technology has viewed viewed as gods by whoever is there and they are thusly the foundation of what we now view as greco-roman mythology.

...and yes, Adama is Zeus.

"Husker," IIRC. Which could refer more to his voice than any perceived farmishness (he's career military, and his father was a lawyer, so no clue where "cornhusker" would come from).

It's actually "Husher" which, although much less flamboyant than other callsigns, has a vaguely omninous tone to it.

Actually, when they're in the tomb of Athena at the mid-point of season 2, they see the constellations and Roslyn says the current symbols for the 12 colonies are based on the ancient constellations: Sagitaron, Sagitarius. Gemenon, Gemeni. Caprica, Capricorn. (And so forth.) So if the old names for them are the contemporary names for us, it seems pretty clear that it's set in the future.

Also, Zeus is not Adama's callsign. That's just how Zarek refers to Commander Adama when he's talking to Lee (whose callsign, Apollo, is the son of Zeus).

Not necessarily. We're dealing with two different courses of history who both have the same root in Kobol. Over the course of the 12 colonies' history the names may have changed but over the course of Earth history they did not.

Also, I know Zeus isn't Adama's callsign (although I thought it was Husker and not Husher as well) but I was speaking within the theory that the ancient greek's would percieve him as such(father of Apollo, leader (sort-of) of the gods (as the fleet will be perceived).

Right, maybe...but the fact that they say that the "ancient name" (for instance) is "Sagitarius," which is our contemporary name seems prima facie to indicate that this all takes place at some point in the future. Otherwise you're going to have to say that there was an extremely ancient group who called one of the constellations "Sagitarius" and then they all left and settled the twelve colonies by which point the name evolved into "Sagitaron." Then the Cylon attack took place and they went looking for earth. And when they found it, they were in an extremely primitive state, so the BSG folks went down to the planet and were hailed as Gods. But then, instead of calling the constellations by the name that they knew them (e.g. Sagitaron, Tauron, etc) they reverted back to the ancient names for some odd reason. 1 step versus three, seems more reasonable to go with 1.

Plus, the Earth already had a few thousand years of civilization up to that point--I find it implausible that they would have just gone down to Greece and assimilated into Greek culture without so much as elevating them technologically.

But of course, if the series does end with the discovery of Earth, I imagine it will go the way you say if for no other reason than the "whoa" factor.

Well, there is the possibility that the 13th tribe themselves crashed on Earth and therefore lost that technology or perhaps when humanity originally left Kobol they didn't have FTL technology. The 13 colonies are fairly close to Kobol whereas Earth is a lot farther away. The 13th tribe may not have actually been on Earth for thousands of years. Space travel at sub-light speeds is pretty tedious.

There are obviously lots of plausible ways the writers can spin this one. I'm not sure which would produce the beat "whoa." The idea that they might get to ancient earth isn't an entirely new one.

DANFAN

As long as we are talking about BSG theories... I have one of my own regarding a different aspect of the show. I hope you don't think this is a hijack. But...

The show presents itself as a conflict (call it a deadly game)involving 2 players: humans and Cylons. I think that is deceptive. There is a 3rd player in the game that neither of the other 2 players even knows is there yet. This 3rd player manifests in the form of apparent "hallucinations" to the characters... I like to call these hallucinations "Harveys" after the old Jimmy Stewart movie about an imaginary friend (who turned out not to be not so imaginary).

These hallucinations appear to the character as an important person to them from the opposing team. The first two examples are old news:

Gaius Baltar has a Harvey Number 6.

The Number 6 called Caprica has a Harvey Baltar.

(There is a third, I'll get to that in a moment). Each Harvey manifests the personality most likely to influence the person it is sent to influence. Baltar's Harvey is an domineering white hot sex machine... because he is all about the sex and he responds to the domination. Caprica's Harvey appears to her as a confident, competent, super-rational Baltar... because that is what whe truly wanted Baltar to be. She respnods to that.

The goals of these agents of the 3rd player are completely unknown.

Now the third Harvey... in the recent episode "Maelstrom" where Starbuck melts down, she has repeated hallucinations in which Leoban appears. Only he's different from the real Cylon Leoban. The one she sees is compassionate, gentle, almost loving. He was what she needed him to be to help her deal with the issues that were keeping her from taking the next step he says she must take. Finally, he helps her resolve those issues so she can move forward. At the very last, she turns to him and says "You aren't really Leoban." And he replies "Never said I was." Then she's returned to the real world and does what it was the Harvey Leoban was guiding her to do.

Okay... so what is the agenda of the 3rd player? My theory is based on a comment of the BSG creators in a recent interview. They said that upcoming developments in the plot would blur the line between human and Cylon. I think the 3rd player is the final 5. The Harveys are their manifestation in the real world to manipulate the humans and Cylons both in the direction they want them to go. I think that direction is to lead the humand and Cylons to a fusion of their cultures... a merging back into a single society. Perhaps even a single species.

Finally... I think Kara Thrace (Starbuck) is (without her concious realization) one of the final five. My reasons for that would fill another post.

Thoughts?

While I agree that Adama's callsign is not Zeus at the moment, I can see the writers making it some symbolic moment where they announce him as Zeus. God knows the writers love whoa moments, naming the stealth ship after Roslyn, several somewhat important people dying, so on and so forth.

I don't know whats going on with the Gauis hallucination and the Caprica 6 hallucination, that is something I don't have a theory on yet.

I think its more complex than that (wrt the 3rd player being the final 5) the Thirteenth colony had the temple in which Dana had her vision, the temple to the five, but that Temple predates the Cylons. It seems, to me at least, like there is more going on than Cylons alone, though I don't doubt that the final five are involved.

As for Kara, I agree. If there were no other reason than being told she'd explore the space between life and death (how one Cylon described resurrection) I'd believe it. After all she had no way to be familiar with that phrase, yet the thing in her head used it precisely.

I've long since hit the point where I don't believe in coincidence in Battlestar Galatica.

Couldn't these 'Harveys' also be some God or Gods guiding these people to their destiny as written in their religious works? Either way, it will be interesting to find out what really is going.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.
