CYBERSNARK

Okay, so, as some of you may be tangentially aware, this past weekend was Botcon, the Hasbro-authorized, fan-created Transformers convention. I couldn't be there ('cause I'm in the wrong damn country. Still.) but I've been following the regular updates on the Allspark, and now I'll pass on my coverage. . . of the coverage.

Being Hasbro-authorized means that Botcon isn't just for the fans and the "celebrities" (the voice actors, the comic writers, etc), but also boasts heavy involvement from the toy designers, the concept guys, the producers, the directors, the production crews. . . Sometimes Takara people even fly in from Japan (though it doesn't look like anybody did this year). What all this means is that it's not just a celebration of fandom, but an in-depth behind-the-scenes look, detailing things like production art, prototypes, design drafts, and previews of things that won't be out for another year.

Those of you who care about the toys probably already know all this, but in terms of Transformers fiction, I'll list some relevent news bits.

First, the movie: It's being released this week (there's a special showing at Botcon), so there's not much to say that won't be self-evident. Much of the TF voice cast has been kept secret (aside from Peter Cullen, Hugo Weaving, and Keith David), but reports from the Botcon screening say everyone does a great job. Early Work on Transformers II has already been greenlit.

Garnering far more attention was news of next year's series: known self-evidently as Transformers: Animated (which sets it apart both from the live-action movie and the last few glacially-paced TV series ).

First, the Autobot character designs:

Yes, I know, OMFG!!11!! THIS ISN'T TRANSFORMERS!!!! IT LOOKS LIKE TEEN TITANS/ANIME/CHEAP AMERICAN CARTOONS/CHEAP AMERICAN CARTOONS TRYING TO BE ANIME!!!!!!! HASBRO IS RAPING MY CHILDHOOD!!!111!!!!!11 GORRAMN RUTTING SELLOUTS!!!!!1111!!!!!1
Just get it out of your system. I'll wait.

Done yet?

Fine, just let it out.

Okay?

God, people, SHUT UP!!

Okay then. First, some plot details from SCI FI Wire:
Quote:

Cartoon and Hasbro executives told the [Hollywood Reporter] that the new series, Transformers Animated, will be significantly different from the others, adding humor, never-before-seen characters and a new premise in which the Autobots fight evil humans in superhero fashion much more frequently than they battle the Decepticons, the traditional Transformers enemy since the franchise launched as a toy line in 1984.

The animated series won't pick up on any of the themes from the Paramount/DreamWorks film, which is directed by Michael Bay.

In the new Cartoon series, the robots will have a lot more human qualities, allowing kids to identify with the characters much more than in previous series.

The plan is to produce 26 half-hour episodes, as well as a 90-minute special that will serve as the series premiere. Matt Youngberg (Teen Titans, The Batman) is the supervising director of the series, and Sam Register (Teen Titans) will serve as executive producer.

And Cartoon Network's press release adds:
Quote:

Set on Earth in the near future in Detroit, the alien TRANSFORMERS are thrust into a world populated by humans and automatons. As visitors to Earth, the TRANSFORMERS--OPTIMUS PRIME, BUMBLEBEE, PROWL, BULKHEAD and RATCHET--work in the human world, interacting with the ‘natives’ in exciting and humorous ways.

Other plot hints describe the Transformers as superheroes, each with a particular power (like in G1, when Mirage could turn invisible, Rumble could make earthquakes, and Skywarp could teleport). Most eps will be stand-alone, with the core group of Autobots fighting human criminals and the occasional Decepticon.

(Botcon talk has recently confirmed the presence of an arc, just one marked by self-standing episodes, rather than ongoing "to be continued" pacing. They've also confirmed that much of the Hollywood Reporter's story was marketroid; "more human qualities" just means that it won't be focusing on interstellar battles between God-like giants.)

To fill out the announced crew list, that's:
Executive Producer: Sam Register (Teen Titans)
Supervising Director: Matt Youngberg (Teen Titans, The Batman)
Character designer: Derrick Wyatt (Teen Titans)
Head Writer: Marty Isenberg (Transformers: Beast Machines, Danny Phantom, X-Men, TMNT)
There's also talent from Ben 10 and Justice League Unlimited.

For those of you who don't follow cartoons, these are BIG names. These shows are some of the highest-rated and highest-quality American-made cartoons on the air. They have wit, humour, exciting plots, and beautiful, highly-choreographed action sequences (Teen Titans in particular, with all five heroes moving in and out of frame, as the camera pans, weaves, and zooms through huge 5-on-5 fights in a single shot --a far cry from the "group of Autobots. Group of Decepticons. Shoot at each other" fights we've had for the past three series).

The voice cast is similarly talent-heavy:
Optimus Prime: David Kaye (who, ironically, has played Megatron for five of the last six series).
Ratchet: Corey Burton (see below)
Bumblebee: Bumper Robinson (doing his best Chris Rock impression, oddly)
Prowl: Jeff Bennett (who played Brooklyn, Owen, and the Magus in Gargoyles, and is Johnny Bravo)
Bulkhead: Bill Fagerbakke (who played Broadway on Gargoyles, but is best known as the voice of Patrick on Spongebob)
Megatron: Corey Burton
Starscream: Tom Kenny (Spongebob himself, who can apparently do a good Chris Latta impression [the late Mr. Latta voiced 'Screamer in G1])

And the guest cast who have already recorded lines:
Ultra Magnus: Jeff Bennett
Grimlock: David Kaye
Lugnut(z): David Kaye
"A Constructicon": Tom Kenny
Arcee: Susan Blu (who also voiced Arcee in G1)
Blackarachnia: Cree Summer (who played Hyena in Gargoyles)
Jazz: Phil Lamarr (the voice of TV's Osmosis Jones and Carver on The Weekenders)
Shockwave: Corey Burton (who voiced the same character in G1 --and Brainiac throughout the DCAU)
Blurr: John Moschitta Jr. (A.K.A. "The Micromachine Guy," who also voiced Blurr in G1)

And finally. . .

Wait for it. . .

Are you sitting down?

As a transforming garbage truck (and potential Junkion?), we have. . . WEIRD AL YANKOVIC!!!!!!

Yes, Weird Al Yankovic.

There's also been hints that Waspinator will appear, but sadly Scott MacNeil won't be voicing him (Scott's a Canadian actor, and Canadian VAs aren't allowed to work stateside. Stupid Union rules).

More news from the Hasbro Product Panel (via the Allspark):

Quote:

Human super-villains and Decepticon villains. Hasbro and Cartoon Network wanted the Decepticons to be more of a menace - "OMG A DECEPTICON." Decepticons are a much bigger threat than the humans. "When Megatron's gonna show up, it's gonna be a big deal." Not a Con/Bot battle every day. But, there's often a Con influence on what the human villains do.

[. . .]

Human characters
Cpt. Fanzone - Police chief in Detroit
Sari and her father Isaac Sumdac - the most interactive human characters. They can't tell us how, but NOT the "annoying human sidekick telling the big robot from outer space what to do." Sari's an outcast, she looks to them for friendship. They look to her to fit in.
Human villains - "The Angry Archer" *snerk!* Looks like a dopey evil Robin Hood. "Super-powered dudes. Some can run fast, some are super strong, some spew acid, some look good in a pimp suit."

[. . .]

Detroit - Designers flew out there to draw some familiar buildings, but it looks really futury. Centerpiece is the Sumdac Tower, owned by Sari's dad-the Bill Gates of the city. It looks like a sparkplug. Detroit now builds robots instead of cars.

In addition to Grimlock, there'll be two other Dinobots as well (I'm guessing Swoop & Snarl, since Swoop's the most recognizable after Grimmy, and they still have both names trademarked). Blitzwing will be back, as a Triple-changer, with multiple-personality disorder. One of the human villains is called the Angry Archer (and bears a resemblance to Hasbro designer and fan-liaison Aaron Archer ). The series will also feature starships: the Ark and Nemesis (named after the G1 ships), and the Ark will have CR chambers (which implies that characters taking damage and needing repairs will be an issue, instead of just "walking it off" as they've been doing).

They're already working on Season 2, with a possibility of up to four seasons (more than any TF series yet)!

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Those animated Autobots look like crap. Why oh why do I feel this is going to suck?

I always say you can never tell what a show is going to be like from the animation.

Why is the rum always gone?
