Ok, how many ways can we compare it to Angel ?

Amsterdam is immortal, and was given his condition for doing a good deed.

Angel already was immortal, but was given his soul, for doing an evil deed.

Amsterdam saved the life of a native american girl,and had a spell of immortality cast upon him.

Angel took the life of a gypsy girl, and was cursed for it.

Amsterdam is a NY cop, working homicide

Angel is a private detective, working in LA

Also, kinda interesting how Amsterdam looks a whole lot similiar to our Captain Tightpants. What do y'all think ?

I really enjoyed this show (unlike Moonlight, during which I spent most of the first episode cringing).

To me, this is like Angel in reverse. Angel's curse is what keeps him in check, what helps to make him a better person. In Amsterdam's case, it's just the opposite. Once he becomes free of his curse he can finally start to appreciate life.

I think this is going to be really enjoyable. I'm looking forward to the next episode.

My husband and I both enjoyed watching it last night. I'm not sure I like his partner, though.
My husband kept saying that it's really funny that Amsterdam doesn't try to hide the fact that he's immortal. It's just that nobody believes him. He says he took a mortar a little too close in Normandy and his partner rolls her eyes.
We'll keep watching 'til FOX kills it.

Sucks, but I'm forced to agree w/ ya there. I don't mind the partner, The story is set up so he takes her presence for granted, and thinks she'll be gone in a week. I bet she sticks around and starts to discover bits and pieces of his past.

Interesting that he's already found his 'soul mate' in show #2, per the previews. Wonder how'll the writers will keep them apart long enough for there to even be a series.

Today's episode was great, especially the twist at the beginning. Finding out Omar is John's son (and that he's had other children in the past) puts an entirely new spin on things.

One theory I had came up with (based on one of the promos for next week, which showed a young man that looked like one of John's children) is that maybe the curse passes down to John's offspring, with the same provision that if they find true love, the curse is broken. But now I'm thinking that there may be something else at work.

Don't you just love it when shows give you all sorts of questions to ponder? Not nearly enough of that kind of TV anymore.

That's exactly what I said to a co-worker when he described the first episode to me. I told him it sounded like Highlander without the funny sidekicks, hot women, swordfights, and someone losing their head.

The show also had me thinking of Forever Knight. My co-worker seemed a bit peeved at my comparisons stating that the main character in the new show doesn't have any super powers or special abilities other than being immortal.

Watched New Amsterdam and it did feel like Angel.
Don't see how this guy could have all these high profile jobs and know one notices. He actually has to tell people and maybe that is how it works.
They think it is his ego and don't go past that.

Then I watched Eli Stone. This show is a sleeper. Try it out. It sort of reminds me of Medium. The first episode I saw was last night so I was lucky they gave you the details of what is going on with him. Maybe this was the first episode.

So both these shows may not last long. Everyone raise their hands who have heard of Eli Stone.

OOo..I DO like his partner...I think she has a sweetness about her...Skepticism , a little cynicism , and a LOT of sweetness...

She was in X-Files a time or two...And she was also in that horsey movie with Viggo , where she really looked exotic...

Her name is Zuleikha Robinson...I think she may have been born in the UK , but not sure...Will have to IMDB later , 'cause the name of that thing with Viggo is right on the tip of my brain , but it's escaping me at the moment...Might've been 'Hidalgo'...Yeah , that might be it...

I really am liking this show...It feels oddly comfortable , with the Mal-ish title character , and the historical flashbacks...The Civil War 'Antietam' vignette really sealed the deal...

And the music is uni-Verse-ally wonderful...Even the opening theme tune kinda takes me back to memories of that lovely show about the space ship with the oddly-bright hiney...

EDIT: One more thing , if anybody has missed eps , they can catch up at the F*><-On-Demand site , just open the page and operate the 'waterwheel' on the left until 'New Amsterdam' comes up , then click on it to select the show's page...
Amsters' is nice...

So far I am really digging New Amsterdam. I think they are doing a pretty good job of portraying how a person who was turned immortal would behave.

I am watching Eli Stone, but more because my wife likes it and I can tolerate it. I like Eli and his interactions with his brother and potential father in-law. On the other hand, I think the secretary and the intern lawyer are two of the least funny characters on tv. I think they feel the need to put whimsical harp music behind them whenever they speak to brainwash people into laughing at their horrible lines. I think the cases are terribly cliche, overly simplistic, and shallow. I kind of like how the musical numbers are giving him guidance while you still have to try to figure out what they mean, but I found the idea was MUCH better implemented in Wonderfalls. I like to call Eli Stone a poor man's (if not broke man's) Wonderfalls.

The player works very smoothly , even when bumped up to fullscreen mode...

New Amsterdam is available at Hulu , with all the aired episodes selectable , as are the last 4 eps of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles , plus a couple of interesting clips...

Saw the 'Honor' episode tonight on the computer. Fox has a nice player which gives a clear, smooth picture. It's no big deal for me to miss an episode or 2 on t.v.

As for the series itself, I'm thinking more and more that this compares to John Doe than Angel. But unlike Doe, it's the viewer who is left to discover the untold parts of Amsterdams life. We know the circumstances that lead up to his unique life, and , if this plays out as it seems, we'll see him transform from immortal to mortal before too long. Which leads me to wonder - " now what?" .

I've been following Eli Stone faithfully since the pilot. Love that show. Reminds me of a cross between Early Edition and Wonderfalls.

Also love New Amsterdam. I am out of the country and can only watch via iTunes. But I fork out my $2/episode every week. Reminds me a lot of Highlander. It is a cool twist though that he can have children. None of the other shows seems to allow their immortals the ability to procreate.

Also trying out Canterbury's Law, but it's a bit too sad for me to watch.

I am continuing to watch New Amsterdamn, but they need to break away from from the same plot. The last episode was not much different then the last one I saw. Got to throw twists into it or it will get predictable. But the acting and idea are good. Just need to tweak up the writing.

I agree with ecgordon and SINGATE that this show has Highlander vibe. I don`t know why I even watched the show. How could New Amsterdam even compare to my beloved Highlander? The premise of the show was lame, he was immortal until he found "the one". I knew that I was going to hate this show. Boy, was I wrong. The main character is very likable,as is the rest of the cast. The detective plots are good and the flashbacks are outstanding. This show has become the only show that I watch faithfully

Anyway, I've caught up on this program, (since I can never seem to see it on it's air date) - on HULU.... and I now wait for the inevitable cancelation (the programs i like never make it, and yet American Idol will probably last forever..!!?!! go figure..)

One thing that I noticed in the closing credits - the name of the Story Editor - Speed Weed.. that's just too cool to make up..

Kristine Sutherland ( Joyce Summers ) shows up on tonight's episode. She plays the wife of a cop who was John Amsterdam's prior partner, but who is now dying.

Been a few yrs since I'd seen her on the small screen. Good to see her, but the part has her lookin' a bit on the ragged side.

I have to agree with this assessment being accurate, and I think it may be a conscious decision on the writers and directors part to make the actual homicide investigation boring, lets face it, if you lived that long wouldnt you get bored too? Its a reflection of how he sees his own life. When your life is measured in centuries, vs. years, daily goings on become less important than the bigger picture. His interest in each case so far has been sparked by something in his past. Almost every episode has been a balance to some percieved inbalance or injustice he thinks he caused, or stood by and allowed to happen.

As for how he gets away with this incredible secret, one of my very favorite books said, "you can scream the worlds secrets in a sea of humanity, no one will believe you. Whisper them and the secrets are no more."

It is very Wonderfalls meets Highlander without the quirky humor.

It makes me miss last years cancelled show, "Raines."
