Is it just me? I watched the pilot and was awesomely underwhelmed...does it get drastically better or something, cause I smell a lot of re-hash comin' off this series...

It gets better (IMHO, of course).

It hits all the things about the Terminator franchise that I like (the looming apocalypse, the need to change destiny, the war being fought in secret [complete with conspiracy theiry undertones], the use of real-world robotics and science, the idea that anyone could be involved [either as a Resistance fighter or an undercover Terminator]), and avoids the stuff I don't (Terminator 3

).

Plus: Summer. (And Zack & Silent Ash on the writing staff.)

Go ahead and watchthe rest of the first season, I am very picky about my tv shows, and this one literally made chills run up my spine in several scenes. It does get better

It's...ehhh..... There are a few really good moments in the story arc that make it worthwhile, but there is a lot of mediocrity to wade through.

Still, I liked it enough to buy it on iTunes as it aired. And I'd probably buy it again when the new season comes back.

The series got better as it rolled on. Not leaps and bounds better, but better.

They bring in the "Vanilla Ice wanna-be" from 90210 as a character, that storyline is decent.

I watched it, but it wasn't real high on my list of "must-see TV" stuff. If I watched, it was out of boredom; I'd usually let 3 or 4 episodes pile up on my DVR before I got bored enough to watch. I can't picture sitting and waiting for each episode week by week, like I do for "Burn Notice" for example (and that's not even one of my favorite-favorites, just a show I rather like).

I put "The Sarah Connorcles" in the ranks of shows I'll have around if there's nothing on and it's too hot to do anything outside. I would never consider buying it on DVD. And I think Summer Glau is horribly underutilized on that show - though not as badly as she was on The 4400 when she was on it. :(

You can tell that they were following closely to the T2 setup for the first handful of episodes but it does evolve as it goes along plus there's a lot of potential setup from the first series. To dismiss it now would be like rubbishing Star Trek: TNG because the first few episodes were pretty derivative nonsense.

Summer's character is the highlight and I'm not just saying that because she's our girl. Cameron is graceful, powerful, unfathomable and darkly funny. She looks like the most vulnerable girl imaginable yet she can act like the coldest of ice maidens.

The show hasn't really exploded... yet. But it took until the middle of season 2 for Buffy to hit the heights with Angel turning to Angelus, Jenny's death and the Oz/Willow/Xander/Cordelia relationship rhomboid. Let's give it a change.

Oh, don't get me wrong - I'll continue to watch it, and hope that it turns into the show it could be if Joss were behind it!

It just hasn't climbed into the ranks of my "first-tier" shows, shows like Supernatural, Chuck, Reaper, Life, The Shield, or Burn Notice. It's really not even in the second tier, with shows like Swingtown, Journeyman (gone), Heroes, New Amsterdam (gone), or Eureka. It's somewhere below those, in my viewing heirarchy.

I'm really interested to see how they dance between the show, which is Sarah's story, and the new movie franchise, which is John's.

I think the show sets a good foundation for a long, secret battle--one that Sarah can win repeatedly and yet never win. How can she know, anyway? Will Cameron just disappear?

(Speaking of which, I want to know why future John sent a hot robot to his teenage self.)

The first season, crushed as it was between the need to be an immediate 'hit' and a looming writer's strike, DOES improve.

I especially enjoyed the episodes toward the end of the season, with duel story lines in different time periods.

Of course, FOX is already forcing the producers to comply to their idea of a show, (John's girl in season 2, etc.) proving that their new executives fill the same old suits. Meet the new boss, I guess.

But the main reason it shouldn't be terminated is:

My God, you're as bad as the networks for even asking! You post every day on a genre-show-site that was summarily canceled. (Extolling the virtues of Stargate Atlantis, I might add.) Don't you know how difficult it is to get a quality show of this style on the air? It needs improvement, sure, but the window is open NOW. We need to encourage FOX by watching, and maybe help the producers by posting in 'official' places.

This show has gobs of potential, like a house full of slayers, and just needs to have the right bit of magic to make it happen. Don't go all Chloe on it yet.

There are many good in-the-moment moments, and Summer is stunning, of course. But the overall story is full of holes, and, imho, rather poor. Doesn't get much better, though I do have hope for future episodes. Cause hope is good.

Those in-the-moment moments are entertaining enough that I'll continue to tune in, and you should too. But you'll be happier if you can turn your brain off and not expect things to make sense. You know. Plot things. Characterization things. Those... can come or go.

Grain of salt: I'm a fan of logic, more so than most folks, and tend to be rather critical of my TV entertainment.

A linear progression of logical events is impossible when rival factions keep futzing around with time.

they can entirely 'delete the loop' that encompasses T3 (and basically did, when they jumped Sarah past her own death.)

For that matter, they can still kill Sarah when she's six years old, or whatever.

Or re-fight each and every battle til it comes out JUST the way the winning faction wants it...

Show is underwhelming. It does get a little better, but it's still pretty bad overall. I watch it because it has Summer and there really isn't much else to watch anyway. I wouldn't shed a tear if it disappeared and never came back.

I have been unable to watch this series like most and when I do it will be because I either catch it on the Sci Fi channel when it becomes syndicated, or because I buy the DVDs later on like I did with Firefly. My schedule does not allow me to watch much prime time television and I am about to buy the first season of Heroes to see if I like it, like I did with Firefly.

Yeah, I wasn't the hugest fan of the Terminator series of movies, but wasn't one of the big caveats the idea that they had to send the terminator back wrapped in flesh because they couldn't just send a machine back in time? That idea gets blown all to hell in the very first episode of "Sarah Connorcles" when the terminator's bare metal head gets transported right behind them!

In a series that took some heavy liberties with physics and logic, the show seems far too willing to just throw such logic out the window - where it will, of course, fall upward and land on the ceiling!

I still watch it, but it's hard sometimes not to just should out "Aww, HORSECRAP!" Of course, if I did that, folks might think I suffer from Touret's. :)

For me, it's not even the physics and such. I'm ready to accept that time travel stories can't be scientifically air tight. Because, you know, it's time travel. Which I guess is all my way of saying that it's contrived. And sorry I don't recall any examples, the plot hasn't stayed in my head. (Why would it?) I just don't feel like there's someone loving this story enough to put a solid framework behind it, take the time to really think it through and fill out the details. Not like Firefly where they invented a whole damned card game so one little bitty scene would feel more real.

BTW: I hadn't ever thought that the "wrapping in flesh" was to get the time travel to work. (Sounds kind of fanwankish... or maybe a rule put into canon during the TV show?) I thought the human looking Terminators were made because they were more effective, since they could blend. And didn't what's his butt (John's dad) say that *nothing* mechanical could go through? No caveats given? I always took that to be just a lame little slip, let in the script because the viewer couldn't see the mechanical stuff inside Ahnold (not till the end when all the exposition is a done deed) so the inconsistency just wouldn't occur to us. Which, honestly, it didn't for my first several viewings LOL!

Actually, the writer's strike is the only reason this show got on the air in the first place. Half of the first season had been completed and sitting on the shelf for about a year with no signs of getting on the air in site. Then the writer's strike hit and while everyone else was showing reruns FOX went "Oh look! We have new content. Ratings for us!"

And as to the quality of the show...I hesitate to respond as I don't think my opinion would be very popular here but the truth is that I despise this show. I tried, I really tried. I tuned in several times throughout the season and I wanted to like it. No matter how much I wanted to like it though, I just couldn't. Poor casting, plot holes, bland acting...the only thing I like about it is Summer and I agree with the comment about her being under utilized.

I will mention that I get rather critical with things that I consider to be mediocre. It's not an absolutly terrible show, it's just mediocre and I take issue with our cultural promotion of mediocrity...

As for me describing her as "under-utilized" - I was being nice saying it that way. To watch Summer move is to sit in wonder at her grace, beauty, athleticism, and lethality. In the Sarah Connorcles, she's beautiful and lethal, but there's not a whiff of her grace - it's all about pushing people through walls! Joss would NEVER let someone of her fluidity of motion be a mere wall-pusher!

And yet, I still watch. Summer is fantastic, if misused. And I even like Brian Austin Green's character. The others, not so much...

I'm watching it, but when it comes back on Mondays next month, I'll be watching HEROES, CHUCK, THE BIG BANG THEORY and MY OWN WORST ENEMY before this. Aside from the mindbender of a scene when the Brian Austin Green character takes John to the park to see his father as a little boy playing catch with his older brother whose the younger version of the Green character, the series hasn't really wowed me. Mind you, I was never a big fan of Terminator to begin with.

And the sub-plot of Cameron trying to learn how to do ballet reeks of actor pandering. It's as if the writers said "Hey, Summer used to be a ballerina. Even though she's a robot, let's try to fit that in somehow." With River, it seemed original and an interesting character trait that informed you of who she was. With Cameron, it just seems unnecessary.

It would be like the writers on MY NAME IS EARL having an episode with Earl skateboarding just because Jason Lee used to be a skateboarder before turning to acting. Jason would be waaaayyy to old to pull it off, he'd probably treat it like a rash that he's never gotten rid of, plus you can't buy Earl as a skateboarder. In this case, Summer read the probably read the script and went "Ugh. I cannot get this fucking ballerina thing away from me."

If it were to get canceled, I'd be OK with it, since it would give me one less thing to watch on Monday.

Possibly - but they redeemed themselves via Cameron's later treatment of the ballet teacher (just in case you thought she was going soft)... Cameron probably thinks ballet is some martial art which had been inexplicably omitted from her programming.

Plus, there is that (as yet unexplained) scene in the future where the resistance guys are being held in a derelict house, and there's a room with music playing... Could someone have been practicing ballet?

Agree that the series could have made a lot more of Summer's talent for Serenity-style balletic whoopass. However, I suspect that (A) they were short of funding (the swimming-pool scene in the finale was effective, but did suggest "whups - no cash for a big dust-up") and (B) we've been spoiled rotten by the quality of fight choreography in Buffy/Angel/Firefly/Serenity.

Oh yeah, that reminded me. That finale probably was the best ep so far. Had the scene I mentioned earlier along with the shoot-out swimming pool scene cut to Johnny Cash over the soundtrack. You put the Man in Black over any action sequence, no matter how lackluster it may be, it automatically makes it cool.

Sooooo, if an actor is called upon to use a skill they actually possess, rather than try to fake it by going to "boot camp" for a couple of weeks, that's "actor pandering"?

It's from the first movie for sure. I remember it from both actually. That's the whole explanation of why Kyle didn't come back with better futuristic weapons to deal with the terminator. He said mechanical objects couldn't travel through time. Then of course the terminator came up and the caveat of being wrapped in living tissue was an escape clause. Pretty dumb when you think about it, but it gave them an excuse for the movie they wanted.

Summer needs to get off this show and get a new agent. She's going to be the best known robot since Robbie if she stays too long. She should be doing leading roles in romantic comedies and dramas. She's got the looks, talent, and personality to be a household name. But instead we are bombarded with movies and news of Jolie, Hathaway, Holmes, Knightly, Portman, etc. etc....yuuch & yuuuch!

You're opinion's perfectly valid, Jongsstraw, but why does she necessarily have to do romantic comedies and dramas? I've always felt thinking such as that is the reason that genre films and television have such a stigma in Hollywood. It's as if everyone believes romantic comedies and dramas are the only kinds of entertainment that are credible (which couldn't be further from the truth). I'm all for Summer becoming a household name, but I also hope that as an actress, she can be diverse in her role choices.

You're opinion's perfectly valid, Jongsstraw, but why does she necessarily have to do romantic comedies and dramas? I definitely agree, Summer is way more marketable; the girl has incredible range. But I think typecasting can work in both ways. She could easily go from sci-fi/action girl to romcom/drama girl, which I would definitely hate to see. And what's worse, the general public would be completely accepting, and fail to see the value of the genre work that she's done.

Sorry about the rant, but the whole genre thing is a hot-button issue for me. I can't stand it how people always assume this stuff is only for geeks and kids. The most heart-breaking and though-provoking film and television I've seen has almost universally been genre-based, so I fail to understand how this work is somehow not valid.

Just because an actor has a skill doesn't mean that it should be written into every character they ever do. Then it just becomes part of the typecasting they face in their careers. It becomes like the joke in ENTOURAGE when every time Vincent does a movie, that there's always a cameo of Drama in there. It's just out of place and unintentionally funny in that world (but funny as Hell for the audience).

For once, I'd like to see Summer do a role where she's a klutz of average intelligence that speaks in complete sentences. Just as much as I'd like to see Jewel be an internal, repressed character or Sean be an uninhibited free spirit or a complete bastard. Range, that's all I want from my BDM's.

And what's wrong with Natalie Portman? Best actress of her generation, IMHO. Have you ever seen GARDEN STATE? Even her eyebrows are enough to break your heart.

Summer is great in this. I think she steals the show. But she may get type cast in these strange characters she continues to play. I hope she can breakout into some different roles. But if this what she is offered, how can you tell her to turn down the money. Sitting around waiting for the perfect script does not pay the bills.

You never know where this show will go. Time travel and new robots appearing all around can alter the direction over and over again. You can kill someone off and then time travel and find them again.

Chris,

It's a good show. Stick with it. You won't get a lot of laughs, there are a few, but then the movies weren't a barrel of laughs either.

This show has issues, which I'll enumerate in a min, but it also has highlights. It's the only thing I'm watching constantly at the moment, it's the only real fight the power with intelligence king of show

Cons:

1. The main problem is that when they have a good idea, they don't stick with it. There are really interesting twists, and then they abandon them.
2. It is humorless for the most part. After a while, you get used to is. It's pretty on a par with T2.
3. Some of the characters are dead weight, and unfortunately, one of them is John. They really need to work on some development and get away from this messianic notion that he's the key to survival, he needs to start acting like it. At the moment, I think humanity is safer in Sarah's hands.

Pros:
1. Summer, aka Cameron steals the show, and when they know what they're doing, they let her do it. Summer loves the role, and said it was intimidating at first. Now she wants to stay there. This is probably one of the most complex characters to hit the TV screen, when the writers use it. Ironically, the most complicated character I'd say on screen is River Tam, and I think this is more than just Summer being hot.
2. The action scenes are great, and they never stop. You're never sure who the good guys are or what they're up do. It's just at least mindless entertainment, and at times, it thinks.
3. The show is leading a storyline forward through time, and sometimes possibly scrambling time, towards an increasingly different world. Any TV show that doesn't fall into the star trek "put everything back where you found it" model has earned its right to be on the air.

Whether or not it lives up to its potential remains to be seen, but I personally think it's awesome, with a few kinks to be ironed out.

Actually, overall, I considered saying this, but I don't know her agenda. The ending of the last slide bothered me. I hate it when characters get into terrible situations by being stupid.

I get Riley is making a big sympathy play, and trying to eclipse Cameron. I think Cameron is on her own agenda, I'm not convinced John sent her back. She can say whatever she wants. I don't think she's working for skynet, or they wouldn't target her, but she definitely does more than protect him, I think that she is trying to influence him down a different path. We might be safer in her hands.

The whole messiah thing is bugging me. ATM, I don't see what's so special. I mean, if someone frags John and Derek becomes commander, I don't see things being all that different for the human resistance.

Also, I wonder if the writers have considered the lack of skynet's control over its own more sophisticated agents in the past. It's sort of like the ant out of the colony. I know that stray ants sometimes reproduce by having 'unauthorized sex' which carries a stiff penalty, and do other aberrant things. Rogue terminators is an entirely possible scenario.

Also, it's occurred to me that to get rid of Riley all Cameron would have to do is boink John. He's a sixteen year old boy, hot robosex would do it for him. She's have to remember not to kill him at the end. Old habits die hard.

With this being the most recent thread I could find re: TTSCC, I'll post this here and hope it's not threadjaqcking.
Another thread mentioned how some shows are just about actor hotness. I think Summer is the hottest of the Terminators.
One thing that always bothered me, and I wondered if I wasn't being too shallow. In T3: Rise of the Machines, there is a terminatrix. Kristanna Loken was pretty hot, and she was cast. However, after being cast and told she would have a nude scene as a terminator, she went on some drastic weight-loss diet and lost all body fat until her chest sagged to droopiness. HELLLOOOO! Terminator? Terminators are artificial!! Terminators would be designed to have droopy chest? Then there is the scene where she inflates her chest and cleavage. But she arrives with droopy. I was really disappointed. Didn't care what her nekkid bits looked like, but it was completely unfaithful to the storyline and role.
One thing that is better about having Summer. Maybe they learned their mistakes and cast somebody not overdeveloped in that area - but still hot.
