It's incredibly well made, but in retrospect, I HATE the whole David Marcus thing. They gave Kirk his very own little redshirt to say bye to in the next flick.
I just hate that pull-a-relative-out-of-a-hat trick. Then Spock had a bro. Maybe that s**t slides in a Indian Jones movie, but Trek?

That's why I like 1, 4 & 6 better- little or no "Kirk's son" thing.

Who's with me on this? I'm curious.

I certainly don't worship it but do consider it to be an essential work of the canon nonetheless.

I agree with you about the David Marcus son thing. It wasn't needed, plus I'm sure that he wasn't the only illegitimate kid Kirk has running around the Galaxy.

To your point about Kirk not knowing, He did actually and they mention. Dr. Marcus (Carol) wanted him to stay away so he wouldn't part of Kirk's world, remember? So Kirk knew but was respecting her wishes.

My favorite solely Original Cast film is probably 6 but 4 is probably the most well done and entertaining. I want to like 1, but keep following asleep in it, although the director's cut is better.

In terms of WOK, Ricardo Montalban is pretty awesome, but I did always have a soft spot for Fantasy Island so maybe I'm bias.

***SPOILER*** (If you're the one person on earth, claiming to be a sci fi fan who hasn't seen this film don't read the following) You can't beat Spock's death scene and funeral. That's dramatic gold for Sci Fi.

I thought 2 out of all the films best portrayed the mature, close friendship Kirk and Spock had developed over the years. It was at its peak. In 4 they are working on getting back to where it was and the next films play on it but not as strongly. This is ironic because that is basically the premise of 5 but it is overshadowed by the generally awful nature of the story/plot. I apologize to anyone who really likes 5.

So, long story short I agree that it has become this iconic film to Trekkers and to question it as the best is often met with ostracism. I also think it's a pretty good Trek and is at least # 2 or 3.

Funny side note - I was watching TNG Season 1 the other day episode titled "Symbiosis" and noticed that the actors who played David Marcus and Khan's boot licker boy, second-in-command were both in that episode.

1 is my fave (my 10 year old Son's as well) because it was epic & beautiful. 4 & 6 tie for my 2nd because of pure chemistry. Then 2 & 3 because they are excellently produced & directed. My Son thinks 5 is funny, but has a bad story; I just never want to see it again.

I'm not sure I count; I'm more of a 24th Century fan. Kirk & crew are historical footnotes.

That said, I do appreciate WOK as a beautifully-made movie with a perfectly-written script, though I agree that it tried to build its own backstory (what with Carol and David never having appeared anywhere else).

And I do have a weakness for TFF, if only for how much has spun off from it. (Ask Q about it the next time you see him.)

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.


WOK was a good story but suffered from both Shatner and Montalban chewing the scenery.

My favorite of the original cast films is 6, followed by 1, 2 and 4. I could live with never seeing 3 or 5 again.

Is Wrath of Khan the perfect Star Trek film? No! Is there a better movie in the franchise? No! Despite some of the story issues and budget restrictions, it's got the best overall balance of a action and story. It also easily has the best villian in any Star Trek movie. Yeah the Borg are okay, but nobody is badder than KAAAAAAAHHHHHHNNNNN!

I liked parts of 3 due to several things.

Christopher Lloyd as a Klingon... Briliant

Sulu kicking that security guard's behind and then saying, "Don't call me shorty."

The image of the crew standing on that hill, watching the Enterprise burn up in the atmosphere.

The rest of the movie was okay...

Briglad...I'm in agreement on Trek 3. I've developed a new appreciation of Search For Spock over the years. It's dark, powerfully emotional, and mystical. In addition to the scenes you mentioned above, I also like the scene with Kirk and Star Fleet Commander. There's a classic exchange of opposing views, but both maintain their professionalism and friendship. Re-watching Wrath of Khan however, reveals many weaknesses in story & character, and I find my fondness for the movie has faded much over the years.

P.S. Chris...did you know that Gregg Henry played Gallatin in Insurrection? I just discovered that yesterday. How could I not know that?

Until the WoK, I'd never seen, knew of the episode 'Space Seed', which was the back story to the movie.

The ep was unlike any other Star Trek I'd ever seen. It was very well made, had some very heavy, no foolin' around drama to it, and was w/ out the corny antics of green women, midgets or slutty fembots ( not that there's anything wrong w/ that )

This was some serious stuff. No wonder they chose that story to come back to and make a movie. Nothing short of a masterpiece, imo.

Pull a relative out of the hat might be bad. But V'Ger was the son's soiled Pyjamas.

Search for Spock was way too pretentious. It was Star Trek trying to be Star Wars, and they couldn't pull it off. The Voyage Home was completely the other way, for however much the franchise took it self too seriously in SfS, it took the piss in TVH. That makes it one of the best movies of the lot imho.

I certainly don't worship the Wrath of Khan. Primarily, really, because I think Khan himself is somewhat of a laughable figure. The ridicuous and continual flaunting of his uncovered chest (rather silly for a man his age) was rather a turn-off; and being surrounded by a group of marooned B-actors didn't exactly help him, either. He was also too much the bad guy, sans any nuance. And for someone allegedly that smart, it didn't dawn on him that Kirk might have the transponder codes of his hijacked vessel, did it?

WOK was definitely not the worst one (that questionable honor goes to The Final Frontier). But worship? Hell, no! None of the initial 6 Star Trek movies really qualify for worship, IMHO. Thematically (though I think they could have done more with it even), I still think The Motion Picture was the best.

Ok, WOK is one of my fav Star Trek original cast movies, along with 4 (actually I have 4 slightly ahead of WOK in that dept).

But I agree that we could have done without the my-long-lost-son subplot. And yes we also were subjected to the Overactors Anonymous school of overactors - Shatner and Montalban - but the rest was classic Trek.

1 (or as I like to call it: "V'ger Where Are You?") is such a yawner, it felt like it was 4 hours instead of the 2 hours and 12 minutes running time. All that to find out that they found a lost satellite from Earth (Kill me, kill me now).

Still though, the new Trek movie was really good, bordering on great. If I'm not mistaken Spock's father, in the middle of the movie, talks to him about Serenity. I will check this when it comes to DVD.

Dunno why it never occurred to me before, but the whole premise that V'ger had some how traveled such great distances, found what ever intelligent life it had, and then amassed such power and wealth of information on the great civilization of the cosmos....simply holds now water.( Duh ) The thing simply isn't traveling that fast, nor anywhere NEAR the speed required to do so.

Star Trek prides itself w/ the 'believability' of its sci fi foundation, for the most part, but this major gap in that department.

They repaired V'ger and gave it new enhanced capabilities necessary to fulfil its' original mission. That's how V'ger was able to amass the wealth of knowledge and experience that it did, if I remember correctly.

Something like that, but then it was able to somehow waltz through the universe, gather alls sorts of information, all while not once crossing paths w/ anything from Earth, even though we'd since reached light speed technology. Point being, we'd have easily 'passed' Voyager by not long after we'd reached light speed. A few hundred yrs traveling at 40,000 mph ( roughly what Voyager is doing now ) wouldn't get it very far, galacticly speaking.

Again, drawing from my memory on this.....didn't V'ger disappear into a black hole which led it to the machine planet? That can explain much, especially if the intelligent machines that repaired it gave it worm hole or other trans-dimentional capabiltiies that we humans just cannot comprehend. Also I believe that all of Star Trek took place in just our own galaxy. I think V'ger went inter-galactic in its' journeys, which might help explain why it never encountered Earthlings before.

For purely visual, design and musical reasons, TMP is the only Trek film I own on DVD.

As a fan of submarine warfare, though, TWOK was the best space battle action in Trek since "Balance of Terror"!

CYBERSNARK


The fanon idea is that the Voyager probe fell into something (black holes don't work like that, probably a wormhole, transwarp corridor, or other anomaly), and encountered the "machine world" in the Delta Quadrant. Then V'ger trekked its way back in search of its original creators.

If you imagine TMP to be the origin of the Borg as we know them (with Illia as the template for the Queen), it becomes much more epic.

It also makes for an ironic parallel between the space probe Voyager and the starship Voyager.

In '02, for the 20th anny of WOK, the Trek 'zine Communicator did an article in which the director, Nicholas Meyer, talked about the daunting prospect of directing Montalban. Apparently, when shooting first began for Khan's scenes, Montalban was starting out already kind of grand and over the top in his delivery, leaving himself no room to ramp it up when the tension really got heavy. So Meyer sacced up and took Montalban aside for a little word. As I recall from the article, Meyer didn't get very far into his piece when Montalban fixed him with a Khan-esque gaze and a rakish smile and said, "Ah - you are attempting to direct me!", at which point Meyer said to himself, "Oh, shit - here it comes!" But what followed was basically some touching stuff from Montalban about how he needed direction, and appreciated Meyers efforts. I Googled around a bit for the article or an excerpt, but no luck. It was kinda sweet in a way.

As for that chest...when WOK first came out my friends and I debated at some length about whether that was Montalban's real chest, or some prosthetic piece. I agree that in a way it seems like a bit much, but then the guy is leader of a race of superpersons, and we all know they tend to be a little on the chesty side. But really, if I were Montalban's age at the time (or my age at this time, for that matter) and had the goods...well, I might not care to hide my light under a bushel, either. And nuance...well, I reckon I judge his performance to be a little more nuanced than Asarian-san does. But my consideration there is, look at this guy's life since he first met Kirk and Co. - how nuanced do you think you'd be after all that? "THIS is Ceti Alpha V!"...pretty nuanced uner the circumstances, IMO. Sh*t, I'd be lucky to still be forming complete sentences!

Khan's B-actor entourage? Hmmm, yeah - good point. But what really got me about his posse was the headbands many of them wore. It was like some kind of Mad Max / Xanadu smash-up or something.

Olivia Newton John on steroids (I've always had a thing for the warrior woman with the oversized shoulderpads in MM2: The Road Warrior).

I did a little digging and here's what I got:
The actress' name is Virginia Hey, she was 29 and gorgeous when they filmed TRW. Her character's name:
Warrior Woman (makes sense). Most recently she's had a recurring role in Farscape 1999-2002.

What worked in Road Warrior, did not work in TWOK.

I'm just sayin'

(You know, with all the remakes, I'm surprised some genius hasn't come up with the brilliant idea to remake Mad Max. Peter Jackson could direct).

Peter Jackson would never have occurred to me for that, but I like it! Aside from the obvious, that would practically assure that Zac Effron wouldn't somehow get cast as the titular hero.

Ohhh, Virginia Hey had more than a recurring role in Farscape.
She was one of the main stars in the first two seasons!

Somehow Zac didn't exactly jump to mind when I thought of Mad Max, too much of a pretty boy.
Although Mel was considered quite the catch back in the day.
I can see the similarities but I'm thinking a young unknown for the part of Max. Of course you would have to surround him with great villains - Christopher Walken, Danny De Vito, Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter or Cloris Leachman.
