Edith Keeler Lives!

Trekkers out there are quite familiar with that name, and we're still, after 43 years, agonizing over her death in the Ellison-written masterpiece City On The Edge Of Forever. So, how can we save her from her own fate, a fate that is both heartbreakingly cruel and seemingly necessary? Wouldn't this effort have made for a great movie, a sequel of closure akin to Wrath of Khan?

My plans to save her include two options:

1) When Kirk, Spock, and McCoy return from the past via the Guardian of Forever, Kirk should have asked the Guardian to replay Earth's history again. While it was playing out, Kirk could have asked The Guardian if he would be allowed to go back and remove Edith before her tragic death; have her come back with him to his present, her future. What would the harm be? To all concerned back in 1930, she would simply "be gone", and then history would still unfold as it was origianlyy meant to before McCoy's involvement that saved her, leading to a new historic timeline.

2) Or if the Guardian refused or said not possible, then how about a time travel excursion using the slingshot effect to create a time warp like in Star Trek IV? Kirk could beam down, find Edith, and then they both could be back on the ship as it headed into a time warp to take them home to the future. Edith would not have known Jim Kirk under that scenario, but Kirk would have had an extraordinary opportunity to tell her why he did what he did, and then let the chips fall where they may. Dr. Gillian Taylor is living in her future, so why not Sister Edith? I think that would have made for great sci-fi.

Spock's quote from that episode, "It would seem un-likely Jim" may apply here too, but can you imagine the world-wide excitement if plans were announced for the new Star Trek crew to do just that in one of their next voyages?

Mr. Ellison recently turned 76 years old. Perhaps he's mellowed a bit, and if he has the desire and strength to do it, I can't think of anyone better to write the script.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

You really expect Kirk to remain attached to Edith (or any woman) for that long? He chased anything in a skirt (or whatever garb the ladies wore) and he would continue to do so even if Edith was brought into the future.

MZ Keeler was an english liberal we don't need anymore of them in America never mine the world. She would have dumped the nookie king for Tony Blair. Then the Germans would have pushed the British with NATO's help back to the beaches of Dunkirk. That is why you don't mess with the timeline. Romance overrated.

Kirk is often given that charicature of a skirt chaser, but often times those actions were part of some plan to save his crew or ship from danger. Ok, he did like the ladies, but when you're locked up in a metal can for long periods, I would imagine one gets some pent up urges.

He brings Edith Keeler to the future with him not to carry on the romance they briefly shared in 1930, but to save her from her own destiny. That destiny is her meaningless death. He plucks her out of there, and then she will never be the Leader of the Peace Movement, which utilmately leads to a changed history for Earth. Kirk fell quite hard for Edith, perhaps more in love with her than any other woman on the series, except maybe that android woman Rayna from Requium For Methuselah. Spock mericfully mind-melded with him to "forget" her.

As Spock and Kirk both said, she was right, but at the wrong time. Perhaps her philosophy of peace will never be practical in a seemingly endlessly hostile world, but it is admirable.

Actually I thought that Kirk could introduce her to his other out-of-time gal pal Dr. Gillian Taylor (the whale gal). Then they could all just hang out together, eating pepperoni-mushroom pizzas, and going to Clark Gable movies.

Hell, apparently there's an annual get-together for "temporally displaced" Starfleet officers (Arex, M'Ress, Scotty, and Bateson are regular guests). I'm sure they'd be willing to let a couple of civilians in.

(And yes, it's kinda troubling that it happens often enough for there to be a support group.)

It's mentioned in one of the novels, though for the life of me I can't recall which one.

I think it's one of the New Frontiers books. It sounds like something Peter David would set up, and ISTR Arex being the one who mentioned it.

Actually, I want to say it's one of the "Shatner"-authored books. As I know about the group and the only ST books I've read recently is that series.

I'll have to dig them out of storage and check them out.
