I mean, sure, people going into a relationship may be coming from different backgrounds, one might have more money or social position in general, so you can't always say it's a perfect 1:1 in the power ratio in the relationship. But I see that as very different from a relationship where one character actually IS supposed to be subordinate to another character, and punishment is possible if they disobey. Power ratio is just way too extreme to be comfortable with, it skirts becoming a question of consent. It's the same problem to be found in an employer/employee relationship, or a military commander/subordinate relationship.

But the potential trouble and liability of teacher student relationships is probably not a place where you can be too careful. Just as a rules against relationships between a doctor and a patient are fair and valid, as the doctor might use the relationship to secure sexual favours from their patient in return for the patient's continued life and well being, so too are teacher student relationships similarly murky.

There were more than a few Jedi of wealthy families who were quite powerful in this respect. The end of that Jedi vs Sith war brought with it the first non-Jedi Supreme Chancellor in some time as well as the new Jedi regulations that made them advisers and keepers of peace but forbade them having any real political power. No more attachments and the like, only training young-lings who weren't yet corrupted, in hopes that this new focus would keep the Jedi on the straight and narrow and they would not lose any of their own to the dark side again. In practice, I believe it made them blind to many things, including the Sith they thought they had eradicated, which was probably exactly what Darth Bane intended.

If order 66 hadn't wiped most of the out, I wouldn't be surprised if the clone wars would have eventually created an army of dark jedi. Of course, an army of dark jedi would not be in Palpatine's interest, it would dilute the dark side's power. If he followed Darth Bane's philosophy, he believed there should be only two Sith, one to have the power, and another to covet it. The apprentice learns from the master until they are powerful enough to strike them down and become the master themselves. Meanwhile, the master is made all the more powerful from maintaining their guard at all times on account of their apprentice. That's the theory anyway.
