After perpetual delay, and for no real good reason, I finally have commenced on watching the entire ( new ) series of Dr. Who. I won't be going back to the original series, at least not any time soon. But thanks to Netflix, I've embarked on a massive catch up effort, which will be even more a challenge than my Buffy + Angel campaign.

I have checked out the series, here and there, but was so often lost at the context of all that went on, I never could watch more than a few eps before calling it quits. Well, those days are in the past.

You needn't have bothered; the show is rife with jumping-on points (pretty much whenever he picks up a new companion, they become the audience surrogate and he has to explain everything relevant).

Usually the Doctor explains to the companion, but the newest companion, Clara Oswin Oswald, is a faster thinker than the Doctor, explaining to him and the audience. Her true origin is the central mystery for this season.

I've recently been watching Classic Who from the beginning, a combination of discs rented from Netflix along with streaming through Netflix or Amazon. Quite a few of the early adventures were lost, either discarded or accidentally(?) erased years ago. I'm almost to the end of the Second Doctor's (Patrick Troughton) run, but I've missed the introduction and/or departure of several companions already, as well as not being able to see the regeneration from the First Doctor to the Second.

As for the reboot that started in 2005, I've seen it all several times over now. Most of it is very good, just a few weak episodes. I liked Christopher Eccleston a lot and was disappointed that he quit after one season, but it took me less than the full "Christmas Invasion" to accept David Tennant in the role. The best episodes are usually toward the end of a season, with the Tennant specials from 2008-10 being very good.

I really like all of the episodes that current show-runner Steven Moffat wrote before (The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead), and yet I haven't cared as much for what he has done since he became show-runner. I think he has made the season long story arcs more complicated and confusing than necessary. Still, it is a show I continue to watch and enjoy, and the newest companion just might be the best of the new era yet.

Sadly the old episodes of Who were deliberately destroyed because they were running out of storage space in the mid-70s plus B&W was seen as yesterday's news and they'd be unlikely ever to repeat the shows (this was before Betamax/VHS). When they twigged that this was an almighty screw-up, they checked their archives and found they'd virtually nothing left of Hartnell or Troughton and lots of missing Pertwee too. So they appealed to other foreign broadcasters who had bought the show and retrieved episodes that way, leading to the current state of play - 106 episodes missing, mostly Troughton. I really enjoyed the Christmas special though I don't know what casual viewers would have made of it - there was quite a lot of continuity (though some was just done as an in-joke).

On New Year's Eve I watched the first disc of "The Invasion," an eight part serial with Troughton, originally from 1968. Two of the four episodes on the disc were animated. On a lot of the episodes where the video is missing they still have the audio. Some of the other discs I've rented just had the audio tracks for some of the eps, no video at all.

I recall watching the reboot, and caught some of the eps, as they aired, at the time. I'd only heard of Dr Who, that it was some old BBC sci-fi show, and didn't know much else. I had no clue as to the character or the plot of the show. But it was Tennant that I first saw as Dr Who, and that's who I first associated as being the Doctor. I only later learned of his true nature, and how he can re-animate into other forms. Clever idea, actually.

But so far, what I've come to find is that the series is really damn good sci-fi. The writing, though weak at times, here or there, is still very entertaining.

Just watched the 2 parter, The Satan Pit. Very well done, and it had a different feel to it than most eps. The main issue I had w/ it was how the Tardis landed in the SEALED pit. Early on, it was deemed lost, as it fell into a huge pit, during a quake. Assuming it's indestructible, or nearly so, not an issue. But aside from that, how'd it end up down in the pit? Did it travel there on its own ? Can it freely move about, with out anyone operating it ? The only other way I see that it could have gotten there is if the quake opened the pit, and the Tardis ended up there. But that'd mean the pit had been open already, and the seal was then worthless at that time.

Just minor stuff like that, here and there, which sorta bug me.

Working my way through, finally making it to Season 5.

One question though... why was the Doctor's last reanimation ( from David Tennant to Matt Smith ) such a tragic and dramatic event ? I mean, for a guy who's been through this process multiple times, and once not too long ago, why all the fuss ?

If he's STILL the Doctor, with all his memories and all, why was going from the 10th incarnation to the 11th played out as so sad ?

Much dated question by now, I'm sure. Much like asking about Mal and Inara, I suspect.

So, I'm finally caught up w/ the Netflix offering of Dr Who. Still behind by a season, I suppose, but that's far better off than when I started.

Great great stuff. Count me as a fan now.

And as for Torchwood, I wasn't fully on board, though I did enjoy it as well. I have to say, that now I've seen the Doctor, it helped me appreciate and enjoy Torchwood a bit more. It's not on par w/ the Doctor, but still... should finish what's left of Torchwood shortly.

Love seeing James Marsters pop up, now and again. His character is a bit like Spike, towards the end, where he just didn't give a flip about much of anything, and loved to do things, just to annoy, just because.

This should be fun.

( Yes, it's a few months after the fact, but hell...as long as I get around to see them, that's all that matters. )

Wow. Another amazing episode. Is it me, or does Dr Who get better and better w/ its guest stars.

Not one , but two great guests in The Cold War, even if the story was a tad lacking.

David Warner (Master Control- Tron ) and Lian Cunningham ( Game of Thrones ) were great to see.

Because the story was lacking I would hardly classify it as amazing, in fact the last two episodes have been poor, IMO.

Yes, the guest cast was good, but when you don't give them a good script to work with you're still screwed.

And to answer that question, no, it is not getting better. During the same time he has also been working on Sherlock, and I think that has caused him to lose his grip on Who.

The episodes Moffat has written himself have been fairly good (such as the first of the current run - assuming that the loose ends are going to be fixed later). Unfortunately he hasn't written that many in the current series. Agree that "The Rings of Wossname" was utter twaddle and "Cold War" had some seriously lazy plotting.

Not so much changed, just clarified. I reread what I had posted, and it did seem a bit contrary. I do agree w/ the last couple of eps being a bit 'off', especially the rings of Akhaten. I thought the pay off in that one was really a reach. Meh.

But Cold War, I liked. I wish more could have been made of some stuff, like the struggle of wills between the captain and his first officer. There was only token attention given there.

Also, sorta kinda Dr related, I've been trying to get into David Tennant's new show, the Spies of Warsaw. I really WANT to like it, for several reasons, but the plot just seems to drag on. Anyway, it was cool to recognize one of the former members of Torchwood ( Burn Gorman - aka Owen ), who has a reoccurring role.

Not Christmas Special related, but 50th Anniversary related.

Anyone see the special on the Doctor's companions ? It was an hour+ long show on the more recent companions, from Rose to Clara. The mentioned every one, even though they may have ridden w/ the Doctor for a short time. I say they mentioned, all but one. Donna. Now, they DID show her, along w/ her folks, but I don't recall them ever saying her name or commenting on her at all. And if they did, it was so brief, I missed it. What gives there ? I liked Donna. I liked pretty much all the companions, but she was with the Doctor for more than a cup of tea, and they practically wrote her out of the special.

Anyone else catch that ?
