Tim apparently had this to say:
"Also, I had lunch with Joss and he asked me if I wanted to write and direct some blonde vampire movie thing. Should I do it? (I of course said yes right off, still) Anything under 13 hours scares me. And anything over 13 hours... um. I got nothin'."

I'd take this with a grain of salt for now, but still cool to think about. Tim Minear was always my second favorite writer/director after Joss.

That kinda scares me, too.

As much as I love Tim's work, I'd be sitting there for the entire movie thinking, "This is SO cool... but it'd be even COOLER if it were Joss..."

Is that wrong?

This, Spike flick, is good news to me. I hope it means that Joss won't feel he has to let Tim direct any Firefly movie.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

As long as he's finished with his screenplay for The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, he can write and direct anything he wants to.

He should definately do this, i can't believe people are discourageing it. If Tim Minear doesn't do it then it's not going to get made. I personally never expected it to (as with Serenity) i thought the moment had past for a spike movie. It seems like its actually going to happen now. Joss's involvement will still be visible and i'm sure he will act as a producer on it and see over the script. Obviously he's way to busy to give full attention to it hence the hiring of Tim Minear. So is this still planned as a 2 hour tv Movie for The WB? I reckon they will screen it in the Smallville slot when it goes on a break. $3.5 to £4 million at the most should do it budget wise. The WB love James Marsters.

he didn't write any buffy, as far as i can tell... and spike lost his flair after all that mooning-over-buffy-i've-got-my-soul-crap... although he did have some great moments on angel... but i can think of a few other writers that might be better... but if the do it they better get on it spike never ages, james does.

My cross post on this subject on the OB:

I understand the conclusion but this might not be about Spike. There were a lot of blonde vampires in the B/A verse (Darla, Harmony, etc.).

I love James Marsters but he IS starting to show his human age. Of course, they could have him come out of Angel as THE mortalized vampire to explain a few "laugh lines"...

Whatever it is will be wonderful (ly dark and juicey) with this team back together.

I think Tim would do really well. Out of Gas is one of the best Fireflys in my opinion. Tim wrote some of the best Angel episodes besides David Greenwalt. He may not be the best showrunner ever. He is no Joss but he's pretty talented and we all know Joss will not let Tim write and direct this thing without overseeing it. Joss is Boss on all Buffyverse things........except those crappy young adult novels.

I'm gonna say this - Darla's story has been entirely told. Movie about her? Doubt it.

Harmony? Evil and ditzy. Movie about her? Doubt it.

As for James, he told us people at Whedonverse and Beyond Con in Sacramento last month that he'd told Joss there was a five year window to do the Spike movie, after which he'd be entirely too old for the part. Spike is the character with the most internet fansites and oh! He's blonde! Movie about Spike? I'm thinking yes...

I don't think Joss would let a project like this get too far out of his hands. He's a control "enthusiast" and a professonal script doctor, and it's HIS Buffyverse, after all. So I don't think there's much to fear. I won't make any judgements on a flick I haven't seen - that's my bottom line.

I'm not in the least worried about Tim Minear writing a Firefly movie, even on his own. But I'm withholding judgement on the BDM so, it isn't much of a hardship to withhold judgement on a sequel.

I was actually referring to the Spike movie in question, but I suppose my comments stand for Serenity and it's impending sequels as well. Though I would like to see Joss stay on completely for any Firefly sequels... even if he co-writes with someone like Tim. It's not really a worry factor, it's more of a thing with me because I'm a screen-writer-in-training and I like to see people stick with their stuff when they do sequels. It's like how Terminator 3 bothers me because it wasn't Jimmy Boy who wrote it.

If I recall Tim wrote some of the best Angel episodes. I'm too tired right now to remember which ones, but I know the one with Angel in the 50's where we first get the truth on the Hyperion is one of them.

Ok Here's what the IMDB says

"Firefly" (2002/I) TV Series (writer) (episode 1.01 "Train Job, The") (writer) (episode 1.02 "Bushwhacked") (writer) (episode 1.05 "Out of Gas") (writer) (episode 1.15 "Message, The")
... aka Firefly: The Series (USA)

"Angel" (1999/I) TV Series (staff writer) (1999-2002) (teleplay) (episode 2.09 "Trial, The") (writer) (episode 1.06 "Sense and Sensitivity") (writer) (episode 1.09 "Hero") (writer) (episode 1.11 "Somnambulist") (writer) (episode 1.15 "Prodigal, The") (writer) (episode 1.19 "Sanctuary") (writer) (episode 2.02 "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been") (writer) (episode 2.07 "Darla") (writer) (episode 2.10 "Reunion") (writer) (episode 2.15 "Reprise") (writer) (episode 2.16 "Epiphany") (writer) (episode 2.21 "Through the Looking Glass") (writer) (episode 3.03 "Old Gang of Mine, That") (writer) (episode 3.06 "Billy") (writer) (episode 3.09 "Lullaby") (writer) (episode 3.14 "Couplet") (writer) (episode 3.21 "Benediction") (writer) (episode 4.22 "Home")

It would appear that IMDB makes no distinction betwixt sole credit (Bushwhacked & Outa Gas) and co-credit (Train Job & the Message).

This would be interesting. Spike has never really been the main guy. He's always just been a side show. Don't know how well he'll do in his own story. I mean his backstory is pretty lame. He's a fairly confused vampire. One moment he's evil the next he's not. He never is much for planning. What could a movie with him be about? Chasing after Buffy? Trying to one up Angel? What else does Spike do?

Don't get me wrong. He's a great character and I love his one liners. He just doesn't strike me as a main focus character.

Tim Minear is amazing. His contributions to Angel 2nd and 3rd season made it 5x the show it would have been (just look at what happened to 4th without him and Greenwalt). He wrote Are You Know Or Have You Ever Been, the one about the Hyperion you mentioned, which is my favorite Angel ever, he wrote and directed Darla, which was almost as brilliant, and he also directed two episodes at the end of third damn near perfectly.

And effects work on The Message was done after they knew the show was cancelled - I can well believe they didn't apply their usual attention to detail.

Maybe an interesting Spike story could be one set in the 20th century before he came into Sunnydale but has a thematic connection to whatever Joss thinks the next step in Spike's life should be.

A Spike movie might also explain how they survived NFA and its aftermath. It's worth it just for that.

If Joss trusts Tim Minear that's cool with me. According to the commentaries by other writers, Joss is heavily involved with the scripts. I would think Joss would have heavy input into this project even though he may not take writer credit.

But it's a challenge to come up with an story that is worthy of being 88 minutes in length that won't give us "a been there, done that" feeling.

Still some Shanshu possibilities; maybe there's an 88 minute story there.

Tossing Faith and/or Illyria in the mix could help.

I think an Illyria or Faith movie could be really good. We don't really know much about either of them. I just hope they don't have a "Spike" movie that is really all about some other character.

I agree. Spike has to dominate if it's to be a Spike movie. If they use no other character from the Buffyverse, then they'll have to create some new supporting characters. And that could be a breath of fresh air.

Another challenge is we'll want a lot questions answered. Because this may be our only way of getting them answered.

How did they survive? What're the repercussions of the final battle? Where's Angel? Where's Illyria? Where are Willow, Xander, Giles, Faith, Wood? Where's Buffy? What are they doing? What about all these new Slayers? What's their role in the Buffyverse?

So they'll have to deal with answering them or why they're not answering them.

Maybe he bumps into Andrew in the first five minutes and Andrew rattles off all those answers and Spike says "oh, alright." And then Andrew leaves and the story begins.

When you think of it, you could deal with the aging issue by passing a lot of time ... and maybe bring in someone from the Firefly cast.

After all, the way Angel ended, a Spike movie could go anywhere.
