America loves a winner!

Saw it (again) on t.v. this weekend, and couldn't help but laugh. Granted, it's a parody on Star Trek, but what if there were a parody movie done for our BDH? The whole SciFi convention thing REALLY made me laugh as I had never been to one before DragonCon last Sept.

I wonder if they'll be able to get the whole crew to show up for DragoncCon NEXT Sept, with the premier being so close after.... hmmm.

This is actually one of my favorite sci-fi movies from the last ten years or so. It took me awhile to warm up to, but the charm and affectionate parody of sci-fi fans won me over. I especially liked the way the aliens were stand-ins for genre fans.

It was definitely a pleasant suprise. I'm not much of a Tim Allen fan and it looked pretty goofy in the ads (which it is I guess) but I liked it.

i concur. hilarious movie.

my favorite line is after they transport the big rock guy into the room with all the bad guys and the rock monster starts going ape on all of them and the one guy puts his hand on the other crew member's shoulder and says "it's the little things in life you treasure." i laugh so hard everytime i see that. also, the part when tim allen is first facing off against the rock dude and the crew member (the one who is afraid he is going to die) says "look around you for a weapon, can you build some sort of rudimentary lathe?" so funny.

Really and truely one of my favorite films. Its beautiful in that it manages to spoof and yet pay homage to star trek at the same time. I will admit to you now that I an the biggest sap ever because I actually am moved to tears when Alan Rickman swears to Quiddick " You shall be avenged"

I saw Galaxy Quest this weekend too, twice.
I think it's terribly funny. You have to laugh at it, or you've gotten too serious about your sci-fi. (Thats why Firefly is so great, it has the humor to keep everything grounded.)

I love where Tommy is supposed to take the ship out of space dock. everyone is leaning their heads to get him to steer the other way, and he's scraping the side of the ship thru the dock.

I also love Sigourney Weaver's part. I think of her in Alien and then see this movie, it's so great. Blonde with the torn uniform, screaming. hehe

Oh, and not to hog the thread, but I always thought they missed an obvious gag. When the Thermians were gushing sentimental welcomes to the crew, it would have been funny to have the alien leader's eyes grow wide in wonder at the sight of Guy. "Aaah! Crewman Number Six! We thought you lost in the jaws of the great lava beast!"

Would'a done wonders for Guy's self-image, too.

Yeah, that movie was wonderfully done. The DVD is great, in my opinion. There's some fun deleted scenes, and you can watch the movie in Thermian. Yes, it's annoying and unintelligible, but it's really funny... For a minute or two. Then it really starts to give you a headache.

But after half-an-hour, it gets funny again.

I agree with everyone's assessments above. Some very interesting stuff (quotes, trivia, etc.) is available about the movie at IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0177789.

My ex wife hates scifi, but I talked her into going when the movie came out in the theaters. She loved it.

I watched it over the weekend also, along with my son. I'd almost forgotten how many good gag lines they had.

I agree, Alan Rickman was perfect in this film, as well as Sigourny Weaver with the Victoria Secrets product placement

Easily the best Star Trek movie ever made.

And the geek kids rushing to save the day (and the rushed but matter-of-fact explanation to the kid's parents) made my geek/goth cousin laugh so hard she couldn't breath.

My two favorite moments were when "Captain Taggert" realizes that he's actually on a spaceship in another galaxy before being shot through space and into a black hole that deposits him back at his L.A. pad. The look on his face afterwards is hilarious.

And the scene where they're testing out the transporter, and the pig lizard is horribly mutated.

"But the animal is inside out."
"WHAT??? It's inside out?"
(the animal then explodes, spewing flesh and internal organs all over the room)
"And it exploded."

Oh, and the chompers scene is the only scene I've seen in an action movie that acknowledges the whole "dangerous for no real reason" workplace.

I love this movie - I started watching it, but the commercials were driving me crazy - so I dug out my video instead!

The "historical documents" make me laugh, and fear at the same time.

I do love Alan Rickman's performance. What a difference you can make in the reading of a line. From laughter and disgust to tears.

My favorite part is when Guy flips out before they get out of the transport pod. He's so upset while Fred is chomping on his cheese and crackers.

"Don't open that! This is an alien planet! Is there air? You don't know!"

I'm pretty sure that's what I'd be saying too.

And I also love Gwen's comment that shows they've all bought into his "redshirt" philosophy: "Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy!"

Guy just makes this movie.

OMG, probably one of my all time favorites...ever!!! I mean, there are so many amazing lines! "You broke the ship!" is a popular one in my household. I've decided it would be fun to fit into a firefly fanfic. ;)

I love Gwen so much! She cracked me up, and Guy too. "Oooo, they're so cute and tiny..."
"Haven't you guys ever WATCHED the show??"

Hehe! The 'no air' line gets me every time too. Well, pretty much the whole movie, really. And poor 'Dr. Lazarus'...when he's eating the food they made for him...and the little insect is diving back into the dish.

"Just like mother used to make."

Could I love Alan Rickman any more? Well, I could, but it would probably be illegal.

Who can forget Gwen DeMarco saying 'Ducts? Why is it always ducts?' or 'I remember that sound. It's a bad sound.'

and this exchange:

Gwen DeMarco: Fred, you had a part people loved. I mean, my TV Guide interview was six paragraphs about my BOOBS and how they fit into my suit. No one bothered to ask me what I do on the show.

Fred Kwan: You were... umm, wait...

Gwen DeMarco: I repeated the computer, Fred.

or this

Sir Alexander Dane: Could they be the miners?
Fred Kwan: Sure, they're like three years old.
Sir Alexander Dane: MINERS, not MINORS.
Fred Kwan: You lost me.

... and Fred had some great lines that weren't mentioned yet, I think. I won't bore you guys by quoting .. but the one about the sticky airlock doors and the wd40 was a good one ...

Last night saw Missy Pyle on Law&Order, too bad she was in such a silly episode. At least she was on the right side of the issue, vaccinations.
In the fictional episode, the medical expert testified to the fiction that all of the kids who got sick had not been vaccinated. In the real world example the storyline had been simulating, all of the kids who got sick in the "outbreak" were found to have been "immunized" (at least every one that had been checked for their vaccination history).

But I was happy to see her doing more work, getting more exposure.

Sorry for the abruptness of that post, ran out of time.

With Patrick Breen from Galaxy Quest and Richard Brooks from Firefly, I occurred to me that it could be a copycat of Deadpool's featuring Jed Rees from GQ and Morena from Firefly.

I had thought there was an actor from the Star Trek realm in there as well, but it has been long enough that I have forgotten. I had not been aware that Leslie Uggams was in Deadpool, and had wondered if that was Nichelle Nichols.

Clearly, it's an homage to the original Star Trek, not so much TNG. Rickman's " I see you managed to get your shirt off " comment was priceless. So directed towards Shatner's Kirk. Spot on.

I just noticed a website listed Sigourney Weaver having her birthday today, and the thumbnail image they had for her was as Gwen DeMarco/Tawny Madison - of all of the roles that she has had, I think the only one with her as a blonde. And likely the only one with an obvious Porn Name for character.
