CYBERSNARK

As a counterpoint to the hero thread. This could be favourite as in scariest, or most conflicted anti-hero, or the one you just love to hate.

My top 5:

Doomsday. Guy killed Superman, and his superpower is to be effectively immortal. It doesn't get any more hardcore than that.

The Joker. The Mark Hamill version, 'cause he's so cheerfully over-the-top (unlike Nicholson), yet still threatening (unlike the Gorshin version).

Magneto. 'Cause he's right.

Lex Luthor. The version from the Man-of-Steel continuity, where he started out as a penniless street-rat and made himself into the wealthiest man in America through sheer hard work, stubbornness, and savvy. A villain worth looking up to.

The Prankster. Also played by Mark Hamill, the Prankster is awesome for being such a complete loser. He's got the Joker's insanity without any of the genius or malevolence (in fact, he's quite sane when he remembers to take his medication). Hell, even Captain Boomerang couldn't take him seriously.

DTUCK

Hafta agree about Magneto, but I've got a special place on my list for Vandal Savage. 50,000+ years old, immortal, brilliant, evil (and a cannibal to boot!). Has been: Khafre, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan, Blackbeard, Vlad the Impaler, etc... Has worked with: Erik the Red, Napoleon, Ra's al Ghul, and Hitler. He, and his secret society of villains, the Illuminati, destroyed Atlantis, and have been a thorn in the side of every superhero in the DC multiverse.

Not too shabby.

ROCKETJOCK

1. Lex Luthor, the silver age version. While his motivation for hating Superman seems petty and childish today, ("He made me go bald"? Puh-leeese!), the underlying theme of jealous envy of the man of steel has informed every version since. What these later versions are missing, though, was the SA Luthor's hidden nobility, his potential to be a hero, carefully buried under his rage. Plus, his inventive genius truly made him Superman's match--he could, in his own words, "Make an atomic pile out of a sand pile". The current version may be a decent engineer and a sly schemer, but let's see him turn a license-plate stamper into a prison escape vehicle, right under the guards noses!

2. Mr. Freeze, the version from Batman: The Animated Series. His premier episode, "Heart of Ice", took a second-rate laughing-stock character left over from the Adam West years, and made you weep for him--in no small part due to the vocal talents of Michael Ansara. (Contrary to popular belief, Michael Ansara does not have a voice like God's. Michael Ansara has the voice God wishes he had!)

3. The Master, from Doctor Who. Moriarty to The Doctor's Holmes, a perfect match. What a pity that Roger Delgado, the first actor to play the role, died in a car accident before the planned episode that would have killed the character off, in the act of saving the Doctor's life! That same, unfortunately unwritten episode, would also have revealed the hidden connection between the two Time Lords. (Father and Son? Brothers?) On the other hand, losing that episode left the character free for others to play--and allowed him to match his wits against further incarnations of The Doctor. (Hmm--wouldn't it be cool if the new version brought him back--played by, say, Christopher Eccleston, Paul McGann, Sylvester McCoy, or Tom Baker...)

CHRISISALL

Zod, from Superman 2, mainly for Terence Stamp's over-the-top portrayal.
Nicholson's Joker (same reason).
Fu Manchu from the Master Of Kung Fu comic series.
Agent Smith from the first Matrix.

Chrisisall, a-washing his tights!

FASTMOVER

Ra's Al Ghul/Henri Ducard from Batman Begins. Liam Neeson did an excellent job playing this role and this character really stood out to me from all of the films I have seen.

Kirill from The Bourne Supremacy. Really cool bad guy who is very methodical and determined to get the job done without saying a lot of stupid words.

Jubal Early. Gotta love his philosophy.

LEGOLAD

The absolute best supervillain has to be the mastermind behind the events of WATCHMEN, possibly the best comic ever written. I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't read it -- what are you waiting for; it's awesome! -- but this villain's actions are jaw-dropping and his motivations are incredibly fascinating and disturbing. He also has possibly the best line ever in response to the hero who asks him how he intends to get away with his plan. Just great stuff.

THESOMNAMBULIST

Baron Greenback from DANGERMOUSE

Danny DeVito's Penguin from Batman Returns.

...and y'know while it may have been extrmely camp I have a soft spot for Adam West's Batman supervillains. Namely Burgess Meredith and Frank Gorshin as Penguin and The Riddler respectively.

Finally - Timothy Daltons villain in The Rocketeer. He had just the right amount of panaché, pasted with appropriate toothy sneer! Forget his name, but that was good.

I always liked The Red Skull. The dude had the image down, and he was downright EVIL. Just what you want from a supervillain!

KINETIC

I remember one of those list of best bad guys of all time and Darth Vader was #2 behind Hannibal Lechter. Gotta admit I was mad about that. Any Bad guy played be Walken Or Oldman is great.

Agree wholeheartedly with Legolad on the villain in Watchmen. An absolute classic.

Although I'm mostly a Marvel fan, I think my favourite villain is The Joker. Not only is Hamill's version for the animated series absolutely excellent, but the villain himself is genuinely creepy. I also think DC handle him brilliantly. Most comic fans *love* him, and just when you're really enjoying reading him he does something genuinely brutal and shocking, like beating Robin to death or the murders he committed in 'Infinate Crisis' and 'Kingdom Come'.

For a Marvel villain I'll have to go with

Spoilers for 'Civil War'

Select to view spoiler:

Iron Man. Because he really is the bad guy of the piece, for all he believes he's doing what's right. Did anyone else read Amazing Spider-Man 535??? Waaaahhhh!!! What an ending!!!

AGENTRUSCO

Lex Luthor all the way. Every version. I got hooked on the Michael Rosenbaum portrayal, but also I love Kevin Spacey's Lex. Gene Hackman was also grand. No doubt, best baddie out there.

There was a time when he was tied in my eyes with two others, but I think they are now just tied for second. They are Agent Smith of the Matrix (I mean, that monotone: terrifying.) And Darth Vader, cos he's just classic.
