I don't even have a name for it, but I will call it the "musical montage ending". On a particular tv show, a musical number will start up toward the end of the episode played over a montage of the different characters on the show. To create mood and add drama.
The reason I ask this, is because I can honestly say I never seen it before season 1 of Buffy, and done to much better effect in the finale of season 2(Sarah Mclachlan's 'Full of Grace'). Another great one is Kim Richey's 'A place called home' in season 5 of the Angel episode "Shells".
Since Buffy I have seen it done in practically every frikkin show on the face of the planet. From any CSI, to Terminator SCC, and even crappy short lived shows like 'Happy Town'.

Any input would be appreciated.

You mean the Montage Out ( http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MontageOut)?

I'd disagree with including Star Wars, though, since that's orchestrated score rather than "source" music. The oldest TV example appears to be ER, so it does seem to be a pretty new thing.

I hereby submit these clips as examples of the montage out:

Cowboy Bebop - Ballad of Fallen Angels, 1998:

Northern Exposure - Northern Lights, 1993:

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Damn, now I have another dilemma. Which DVDs to pull out for another rewatch, Bebop or Northern Exposure. Both are great shows, but Bebop will probably win out since it is fewer episodes.

BTW, I'd bet that MASH did it a couple of times too, and that would be back in the 70s.

Thanks everyone. I see now that it existed before Buffy. I'd say the popularity in it has indeed spiked about 200% since the late 90's.
