There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Now that The Artist has been nominated I hope it comes here soon. It is not scheduled for this coming week though.

I am glad The Tree of Life and Hugo were nominated, don't have an opinion on any of the others, except to say that The Help is okay but overrated.

I agree, I have The Artist on my must watch list before the Oscars (I do that every year, don't always succeed though).

Tree of Life was great, but I don't think the Academy will give it much respect (other than the nomination). Too bad though.

Hugo was great as well, both entertaining and educational (I learned something). It was much better than I anticipated. It was a labor of love for Scorcese and it showed on screen.

Well, the real reason why I'm here is this; I'm going to comment on each category over the next couple of weeks (well, the ones that matter the Top 6 - Actors, Best Film and Best Director.

Best Actor: This is a 2-horse race Clooney or the french dude, Dujardin. I haven't seen the Artist and I did see The Descendants, so I will hold on this until I see The Artist later this week.
Should win: Dujardin, based on buzz and his SAG award
Probably will win: Clooney. He was good, no doubt about that. The film itself was good, well written and quirky. But will that be enough for the Academy voters? Clooney is well liked and Dujardin is a newcomer to Hollywood. We shall see.

I saw it Friday and I was happy I did go. Here's my take on The Artist:

I was reluctant to see this film at first. How can a silent film ever keep my attention for 2 hours?, I thought.
People talk about the Golden Age of film and mention such classics as Casablanca, Singing in the Rain, Some Like It Hot and My Man Godfrey.
Well, after seeing The Artist, you can add it to that list.
Maybe it's better said the Silver Age of movies since it deals with movies just before "talkies" became all the rage. I was actually thinking about how it must have been for an audience back in 1931 and what they must have felt when the heard sound, other than the live music playing in the theatre.
The Artist transports you to the Silver era of movies as well as entertains. Written and directed brilliantly by Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist pays tribute to the best that era had to offer. It is filled with sight gags, obviously, but it has some wonderful surprises as well. One is transfixed and never bored, there are no explosions, no 3D glasses are required, but somehow they manage to give the audience something it's never seen before. It has great heart, a good story, solid script and top notch performances by both newcomers and old veteran actors.
Jean DuJardin, who may pull off the Grand Slam if he wins Hollywood's top award, the Oscars, won BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG Best Actor awards, is brilliant as the main character George Valentin. Even Berenice Bejo, who plays Peppy Miller, is quietly brilliant in her role. She helps carry the movie's dramatic drive. This is not to say there weren't any laughs, which actually surprised me. There were many sprinkled throughout the film.

You will hear a lot in the coming months about both these actors, as well as the French director (who is married to Bejo by the way). Ah the French!
I never had so much fun and felt as entertained as with this near masterpiece of a movie. Who knows they may create a new category - Classic movies. This one is sure to draw on those comparisons.

As an aside, please, if you can go see it in the theatre, it adds to the experience.

In the categories I have any interest in:

Actress In A Leading Role:
I want Michelle Williams to win (third time lucky?) but I'm fairly sure it will go to Meryl Streep.

Actor In A Leading Role:
I'd like Gary Oldman to win but I think it'll be between George Clooney and Jean Dujardin with Dejardin taking the award home.

Best Director:
As a life-long Scorsese fan it's obvious who I want to win and Hugo is a brilliant film IMO but I think Michel Hazanavicius will get it for The Artist.

Best Picture:
Again I'd like Hugo but I'd put my money on The Artist. It just seems like might be the right year for that film.

I agree with most everything you say about The Artist, SGG, but unfortunately I did not get to see the entire film today. The projection bulb went out during the scene of Valentin's latest silent film premiere, with Peppy Miller watching from the balcony. How much story did I miss? Not sure if I'll get another chance to see it in the theater, and the DVD release hasn't been announced yet.

I still hope Hugo wins the Oscar, but if it's The Artist instead I won't be too disappointed.
