Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I was curious as to how the rest of the world deals with this issue, so I checked Wikipedia. From what I read there, we are pretty far behind the times, compared to the rest of the world. The world recognizes same-sex marriages increasingly:
Quote:

In 2001, the Netherlands became the first nation in the world to grant same-sex marriages.[63] Same-sex marriages are also granted and mutually recognized by Belgium (2003), Spain (2005), Canada (2005), South Africa (2006), Norway (2009), Sweden (2009), Portugal (2010), Iceland (2010) and Argentina (2010). In Mexico same sex marriage is recognized in all 31 states but only performed in Mexico City. In Nepal, their recognition has been judicially mandated but not yet legislated. 250 million people (or 4% of the world population) live in areas that recognise same-sex marriage.

Same-sex marriage is legally recognized nationwide in Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, and Sweden.

In Mexico, same-sex marriages are only performed in Mexico City, but these marriages are recognized by all Mexican states and by the Mexican federal government.

In Brazil, the state of Alagoas performs same-sex marriages. Also, in other states, a same-sex couple may convert their civil union into marriage with the approval of a state judge. If approved, that marriage is recognized in all the national territory.

On 15 July 2010, the Argentine Senate approved a bill extending marriage rights to same-sex couples.

Other than that, the countries cited by Wikipedia are in the process of either moving to legalize same-sex marriages, planning to legalize it, voting on it or deciding whether to change existing "civil unions" to legal "marriages". Those include Columbia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Luxembourg, United Kingdom and Scotland.

It would be too long to list the whole world, but the only places I can find that implacably reject it are:

Australia currently bans recognition of same-sex marriages. (There are variations of this in different areas, however.)

New Zealand's Marriage Act 1955 recognizes marriage rights only for opposite-sex couples. (However the 2005 Civil Union Act allows same-sex and opposite sex couples to have a 'civil union' which under the law is identical to a marriage, with the exception that same-sex couples cannot jointly apply to adopt.)

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo introduced legislation that prohibits same-sex marriages and criminalizes anyone who "performs, witnesses, aids or abets" such ceremonies.

The French National Assembly voted against same-sex marriage on 15 June 2011.

So apparently, among the countries Wikipedia listed, only Nigeria and France are currently adamant in their opposition to same-sex marriage. And America, according to the DOM.

MAGONSDAUGHTER

Victoria (the state I live in) has passed legislation known as the Relationship Act which gives equal status to all civil unions, including gay relationships as those covered by the definition of marriage ie a man and a woman.

Too bad Bill didn't veto that and let the Congress try to overturn it.

Then again, six states and the District of Columbia have legalized same-sex marriage.

Quote:

Six state governments (along with the District of Columbia, the Coquille Indian Tribe, and the Suquamish tribe) have passed laws offering same-sex marriage and currently offer same-sex marriages: New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, and New Hampshire. In all six states, same-sex marriage has been legalized through legislation or court ruling.[22] Same-sex marriage has been legal in Massachusetts since May 17, 2004; in Connecticut since November 12, 2008;[23] in Iowa since April 27, 2009;[24][25] in Vermont since September 1, 2009; New Hampshire since January 1, 2010; and New York since July 24, 2011.

Plus Maryland has passed a same-sex marriage bill, and is awaiting a referendum.

OONJERAH

OT. At the risk of sounding fairly stupid, which hasn't bothered me much so far
. . . I've always wondered why we don't have same-sex towns and communities.
Not just for gays, but for cranks who don't like the opposite sex.

. . . . .The worst and most frequent consequence of paranoia is that it's self-fulfilling.
