SHINYGOODGUY

I went to see this with my son last week, opening day, and found it to be quirky good fun, a bloody dark comedy. Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken steal this movie with their zany performances, which is a compliment, and a ringing endorsement, to the writer/director Martin McDonagh.

His treatment of this film pays homage to the likes of Rod Sterling, Hitchcock, Tarantino and, to a lesser degree, John Woo. It is a murderer's row of pot luck stew generously flavored with homicidal tendencies. The narrative is told from the point of view of Colin Farrell's character who is a hollywood script writer crippled with writer's block, who only has a kick-ass title:

Seven Psychopaths.

What follows could only be described as a series of unfortunate events as Farrell's character, Marty seeks the help of his friend Billy, Rockwell's character in writing the script. Billy and Hans, a delightfully funny Christopher Walken, make their living as dog-nappers, but Billy has delusions of grandeur as he worms his way into writing the script with Marty. More than that would spoil the hilarity that ensues. Special mention should go to Woody Harrelson as Charlie the gangster, who thoroughly eats up the role. Also to Tom Waits, creepy and funny at the same time.

McDonagh's writing is both hilarious and twisted. The movie reminded me somewhat of Cabin in the Woods in it's general theme - a skewed view of the Pulp Fiction-esque gangster movies, a revisionist's telling of the tale, turning the genre inside out and roundabout while faithfully following the premise of the script within the script. Parts of this movie are brilliant in it's twisted comic storytelling.

My guess is that you guys; EC, Frem, Kwicko, Somnambulist and maybe even Chrisisall would get a big kick out of this movie. One word of warning: think twice about bringing your ladies to see this. Women are not treated well throughout. I said it was twisted, well actually there is one scene that gives women equal opportunity.........you'll see. Sick, sick, sick but it serves the movie well.

Still though, this movie can't touch In Bruges, but boy does it try.
