Fall Movies 2016 by SHINYGOODGUY

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

There was a page about upcoming movies on some site the other day, something about 30 or so movies coming out between now and the end of the year. I made a note of 7 of them.

The Dressmaker, 9/23: Apparently filmed in 2014 and released in Australia (where it was filmed) last year. Kate Winslet plays a woman who had left her hometown under mysterious circumstances when she was 10, ended up in Paris where she trained as a designer and dressmaker. She returns to Australia to learn the truth of the situation, and maybe exact revenge on those who shunned her as a child.

Deepwater Horizon, 9/30: Supposedly a fictional account of those on the oil rig when the disaster struck. Not that fond of Wahlberg, but I'll want to see it because of Gina Rodriguez.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, 9/30: I'm hoping this will be Tim Burton's return to his early quirky work like Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands.

There weren't any October films in the article that piqued my interest, but a couple each from Nov. & Dec.

Hacksaw Ridge, 11/4: Mel Gibson's first directorial effort in more than 10 years. Andrew Garfield plays Desmond Doss, a Conscientious Objector and Army field medic who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Okinawa in WW2. Personal note: I'm a pacifist and was a Conscientious Objector too, trained as a medic at Ft. Sam Houston, but luckily never served in combat, which was surprising considering we were still involved in Vietnam at the time (1971-72).

Arrival, 11/11: Based on Ted Chiang's award-winning "Story of Your Life." Amy Adams plays a linguist recruited to attempt communication with an alien presence on Earth. Co-stars include Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker. It has screened at a few festivals and received rave reviews.

La La Land, 12/2: Ryan Gosling as a jazz pianist who falls for aspiring actress Emma Stone. I'm normally not that into musicals, but I like both stars, plus Tom Hanks went off script during an interview at Telluride, where he was supposed to be promoting Sully, but instead heaped massive praise on this film.

Passengers, 12/21: Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are awakened prematurely from suspended animation, 60 years before their starship's arrival at a colony planet.

Even though all of these interest me, the only one I know for sure I will see in the theater is Arrival.

You have, once again, come through. We may not always agree, but you always bring something to the table that's interesting.

Off the top of my head: *Arrival, saw a trailer in the theatre and was instantly piqued. Plus I've loved Amy Adams ever since Junebug (2005), the first movie I ever saw her in. Seriously want to marry her, could you help arrange that?

*Miss Peregine's: Tim Burton, Beetlejuice, Scissorhands - I'm there. Still
hopeful for a Beetlejuice sequel.

The Dressmaker sounds intriguing and I'm not a Wahlberg fan either; although
I did like The Fighter.

*The Passengers: I will follow JLaw just about anywhere, although I thought
Joy was a bit of a mess, I love how she works. Plus it's sci-fi.

Hacksaw Ridge: Saw the trailer on Saturday, almost immediately liked the story - not crazy about the trailer. Gibson back, this could be interesting.
I too was a Conscientious Objector during the Viet Nam war, still opposed
to war and killing. Mainly one exception, protecting another's life, especially kids.

I put an asterisk next to the one's I want to see in the theatre, somehow
it lends more magic to seeing it there. Just a different feel at home.

What most don't understand about pacifism and conscientious objection is that it is not saying you will never, ever resort to physical force to solve a problem, just that you will endeavor to find other solutions first. Training to kill is absolutely out of the question. I respect other people that have the opposite opinion, since "conscience" is the operative word, and everyone has to make that decision for themselves.

Sorry to go off topic, but it is a subject close to my heart, even though I am aware there are many who think I should be ashamed to admit my conviction. It was the way I was taught at home by my father and at our church. He was drafted but declared as a CO, and was already serving in a Civilian Public Service camp in Arkansas by November, 1941, a month before Pearl Harbor. I suppose I owe even my existence to this fact, since he was introduced to my mother by her brother, who had worked with him in several camps during the war.

I had hoped to be declared 1-O by the selective service because of my family's history, but was only granted 1-AO status instead, which meant fit for service, but in a non-combat position. Since my draft lottery number was 18 there wasn't anyway I was going to get out of it except to refuse service, and maybe go to jail, or skip the country. I still haven't been to Canada, but I didn't want to be forced to visit by running out on my obligation. It was an interesting experience going through basic training and Medical Training with more than a hundred other COs. The regular army had a hard time figuring out how to deal with us.

Home for Peculiar Children and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Here's my choices from the above:

Jack Reacher, because I generally enjoy Tom Cruise's movies filled with impossible adrenaline-type action, entertaining and fun (Knight & Day is one of my favs, along with the most recent Mission Impossible moives).

Dr. Strange - because I read the comic book as a kid and it captured my imagination.

Miss Peregine's and Magnificent 7 already mentioned in another response.

Game Changers: that rare movie that turns things upside down, in a good way.

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk - Ang Lee's latest contribution to cinema.
Birth of a Nation - Nate Parker's Sundance entry about Nat Turner's slave revolt.

For me the jury is still out that I will go see these two in the theatre.

Real Life: Biopics and docudramas

Sully, Snowden, Queen of Katwe, Loving, Allied, The Beatles: 8 Days a Week,
Deepwater Horizon

The only ones that I intend to see at all is Sully and Snowden.

Actual Original Movies: As stated in the newspaper - "there's some legitimate
creativity afoot".............really!?

The Accountant, Moana, Voyage of Time, Arrival, Elle, and The Girl on a Train.

Arrival without question is on my must-see list.

Indies/Art House: "small" films

Manchester by the Sea, Certain Women, The Dressmaker, In a Valley of Violence, The Handmaiden, and American Honey

I haven't heard much about the movies in this category.

Things to Come/The Winter Movie Slate:

Rogue One, La La Land, Collateral Beauty, Assassin's Creed, Passengers, Sing, and Keep Watching.

This is a no-brainer - Rogue One and Passenger, but I've heard some buzz around La La Land, with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling.

I love Emily, but I've read the book so have no interest in the movie. It had been getting rave reviews, and I took a chance even though I don't typically read mystery novels. When I can figure out the culprit half way through the book it can't be that great.

I did not know about Inferno coming out 28 October, and I don't think I've read that book.
More of Hanks, plus advance viewing of Felicity Jones before her starring turn in Rogue One.

Dr. Strange, 11/4: Because I actually read the comic book during my Marvel binge in my teens. Besides, I would watch Cumberbatch read the dictionary; either him, Denzel, The Operative or Fassbender. These guys fascinate me.

Loving, 11/4: Perfect movie for our time. Based on a true American story that went all the way to the highest court in the land. You bet I'm adding this to my list, plus I like the actors in it. About an interracial marriage in 1950s Virginia. Could possibly be Oscar material.

Dog Eat Dog, 11/4: Crime drama with Cage & Dafoe playing ex-cons trying to pull off a kidnapping for a mob boss but something goes wrong and they have to run from the mob and the cops. Saw the trailer recently and it looks to be funny as well.

Shut In, 11/11: Drama/thriller - Naomi Watts trying to save a little boy during a winter storm.

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk 11/11 - Ang Lee's film about a 19-year old soldier back from the Iraq War and what his platoon went through.

The Monster, 11/11: Horror/thriller - it's about a mother and daughter escaping from a monster on a dark and stormy night.

Elle, 11/11: Drama/thriller - this is another version of The Panic Room but without the panic room. With Isabelle Huppert

The Love Witch, 11/11: Comedy/Horror: Elaine, a beautiful young witch, is determined to find a man to love her. In her gothic Victorian apartment she makes spells and potions, and then picks up men and seduces them. However, her spells work too well, leaving her with a string of hapless victims. When she finally meets the man of her dreams, her desperation to be loved will drive her to the brink of insanity and murder.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, 11/18: The wizard world before Harry Potter.

Friend Request, 11/18: Horror - the horrors of friending on Facebook

The Edge of Seventeen, 11/18: Coming of Age - with Hailee Steinfield, Kyra Sedgwick and Woody Harrelson. This looks to be on the funny/quirky side a la Sixteen Candles.

Bleed for This, 11/18: A boxing biopic about the comeback of Vinny Pazienza.

Nocturnal Animals, 11/18: Noir Thriller - The story of an art gallery owner who is haunted by her ex-husband’s novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a veiled threat and a symbolic revenge tale (with Amy Adams).

The Take, 11/18: Action - Michael Mason (Richard Madden) is an American pickpocket living in Paris who finds himself hunted by the CIA when he steals a bag that contains more than just a wallet.

A Street Cat Named Bob, 11/18: Drama - The true feel good story of how James Bowen, a busker and recovering drug addict, had his life transformed when he met a stray ginger cat.

Life on the Line, 11/18: Action - Focuses on Beau (John Travolta), his beloved niece Bailey (Kate Bosworth) and the hardworking men who risk their lives to work "on the line" and keep the electric grid running.

Manchester by the Sea, 11/18: Drama - A Boston-living ne’er-do-well plumber is forced to return home to the titular town after he learns his brother passed away. There, he finds himself thrust into the care of the man's 16-year old son

Officer Downe, 11/18: Action - The story of a savage LA policeman who is repeatedly resurrected and returned to active duty via dark science technology. When a rookie officer named Gable is recruited as backup, he discovers there's much more to the titular super-cop than a mindless law enforcement drone warring against a twisted rouges gallery of over-the-top super-villains.

November 23 (Wed) Releases.

Allied - Spy: The story of intelligence officer Max Vatan (Pitt), who in 1942 North Africa encounters French Resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour (Cotillard) on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. This is the movie that set the Brangelina divorce in motion.

Moana, a Disney Cartoon: In the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania, Moana, a born navigator, sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her incredible journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui

Bad Santa 2 - More Bad Santa with Billy Bob

November 25 (Fri) Releases.

Never heard about this film..........gotta look it up!

Okay, I looked, and it looks damn good. I can't figure how I missed this one,
but I'm in. Great cast and really good story. Never knew they hired "women" at NASA......lol.

Since I last posted, I've had the opportunity to check on this film and I'm in. When I first saw the title, I thought it would be some sappy love story, but as it turns out it's a historical piece that I actually studied in college. So, yep, added it to my list.

I just went to see Hacksaw Ridge, but it was Sold Out. The line of people behind me were unhappy as well.

The last few weeks the parking lot at that cinema has been about 20-25% as full as tonight, on previous Tuesdays.

I am also warming to the idea of seeing Allied in Cinema.

I think the film clearly stated in subscript 1939, in Casablanca.
I finally got to see this. I had forgotten it was a Zemekis work, but recognized his touch. For those who are fans of Zemekis, this should be an enjoyable viewing. Pitt's performance had touches of Fury, just less intense and sustained. I don't want to give too much detail, or risk spoiling it. I am glad I saw it in Cinema. For those who are fans of Pitt and yearn to see his behind, this has some scenes for you, but he is not as young as the days of Thelma and Louise.
