America loves a winner!

It's sort of Harry Potter's Diagon Alley meets Game of Thrones.

Carnival Row is an American neo-noir fantasy web television series created by René Echevarria and Travis Beacham, that premiered on Amazon Prime Video August 30, 2019. The series stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne. In July 2019, it was announced that Amazon had renewed the series for a second season.

Extremely well done , w/ costumes, make up and ' period ' piece scenery. While not set in our history, there is a late 1800's, early 1900's vibe to it. Missing , at least so far, is any sort of map which lets the viewer have a grasp as to the scale of this world, the different lands, the empires and the location of the now ravaged Fae lands.

While it's a bit slow at times, there's also a fair amount of gratuitous nude / sex scenes as well as a few gory shots. Again, not near the level of GoT, but still plenty of adult language , just to remind folks this is NOT to be confused w/ any Harry Potter stuff.

Enjoyed this show a lot B+. Both leads very capable, talented actors. How hard it must be to be serious and emotional as a fantasy character. Amazing sets. I know a lot is from cgi but I still can't get over the big film production look of these short Netflix/Amazon series.

saw the first maybe 10 mins of the pilot..then got pulled away for real life chores...it felt more like they were trying to do a PSA for an old Obama syrian refugee drama or something.. I like the visuals and the characters thus far well enough and I do intend to go back and give it a fair shot over a couple epis...just didn't know that the victorian era type thing included all those "F-bombs" but hey..hollywood ....can't make a show these days without gratuitous sex and language..cause ...well, it's just not realistic unless there's plenty of both right?

I call it Game of Thrones Lite, with only 1/2 the sex, vulgarity and violence as a full bodied fantasy.

What confused me most was the different kingdoms and waring factions of man, and how the Fae were secret for so long, until war drove them from their homeland. As bad as they seem to have it in the story we see, it's far better than being caught by the others, from the way it sounds.

Plenty to explore w/ that story in the next season, I suppose.

Are you talking about Cara Delevingne, of Valerian? Are you serious?

Fair enough. In Valarian and even Suicide Squad, she wasn't exactly winning any Oscars. But I think this was a far better effort for her. She wasn't outshined by Orlando Bloom as she may have been in the past. my 2 cents.

I've never actually seen anything she's in, so I wasn't putting any judgements on her. It just looked like that's the point that JSF was trying to make, is all.

I'm also not saying that beautiful women can't act either. Long history to prove otherwise. That being said though, Cara is far from the first Victoria's Secret Angel and/or Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover model to take up acting, and there's a pretty long list of not so great acting coming from those sources.

I'm sure it didn't start with Kathy Ireland in the early 90's, but let's just say that 12 year old me didn't even notice how bad of an actress she was when I saw her on the silver screen.

Ahhhh... Fond memories of my Kathy Ireland poster...

Here are links to 2 threads discussing Valerian:

http://fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=61817

http://fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=61816

In neither thread did I recall seeing anybody even suggest that Cara was capable of carrying her performance.

As a lead role in a wonderful film, perhaps the best film of that year, she had opportunity to showcase her talents, and we were left wanting.

I asked the question here because I was not sure if she is who the "2 leads" were referring to.

AFA Kathy Ireland, I firmly believe that both Mom And Dad Save The World and Necessary Roughness were bolstered by her performances. Perhaps there were other actresses capable of the same, and perhaps her range was not stretched, but I felt she suited the roles, and was a charming fit for each.
MADSTW is one of my favorites, and includes Dwier Brown (Kathy's brother), Eric Idle, Jon Lovitz, Teri Garr.

Kathy Ireland resided on my bedroom wall for the better part of my HS years.

Cara looked like a 12 yr old girl to me, and still kinda does. Sorta cute, but more like in the wood-elf sense ( non Tolkien ). I guess it'd be more accurate to call her a nymph, which is one reason why I think she's perfect as the Fae character she is in Carnival Row.

Again, I think she was told to basically stand there and remember a few lines in her previous movies, and any acting which she may have done was purely by accident.

Here, I think she acts. She's not Cate Blanchette or even Scarlett Johansson, but she acts.

Well that's the difference between most VS models and most SI swimsuit models.

For years VS wouldn't let Kate Upton in their shows or catalogs. Even though she was arguably the best looking woman on the planet in her prime, she wasn't the typical stick-thin body they're marketing to.

I know they eventually put her in some of their catalogs, but I don't know if she ever did any of the shows. I can only assume they even allowed her in because of lefty backlash for "fat shaming" or some ridiculous thing. She didn't have a single ounce of fat that didn't look amazing on her. I guess they just felt they couldn't be honest and publicly state that her boobs were too big for VS.

About Cara...

I got a weird thing for eyebrows.

I find her to be simply stunning.

I really don't think that Kathy Bates, Anne Ramsey, or Meryl Streep would have been suitable for the roles of Dark Angel, Hit Girl in Kick-Ass, or Buffy The Vampire Slayer, either.

Agree...I've enjoyed and rewatched the movie sevearl times...incredible CGI current state of technology..but the casting of both Cara and Dane (the Leo deCrapio look-alike) received the abyssmal reviews it deserved..while the movie itself was super cool...maybe I'm just too old, but don't see anything sexy/hot about her...

Lily has been gorgeous for well over a decade, usually with long hair. I suspect her hair is just "up" in that pic. Plus, she can act.

Since you have not seen it, you should check out The Blind Side, one of the best films of 2009. The background story is abut football, but that is mostly setting - in a true story or based on a true story. Wonderful cast besides Lily: mom & dad Sandra Bullock & Tim McGraw, Quinten Aaron, breakout role for Ray McKinnon, Kim Dickens, Kathy Bates.

Abduction was more actiony, cat and mouse chase. Priest was a little action, ala warring of the gods or angels or devils.

Agreed. Never heard a bad Phil Collins song in my life. Even Sudio.

You should check out his YouTube page. He's been uploading there for almost 10 years. His intro video welcomes you to enjoy all of his music videos and he follows that by saying how much he enjoyed making them.

Pretty cool to see an artist so free about the stuff instead of trying to sue everybody (looking at you, Lars).
