I've heard some doozies in my 20+ years of working with kids: Duran (he liked us to call him Joe), Rourke ( Mickey Rourke), some names were original interpretations of classics eg: mashell (michelle), Jaisen, etc. I also met two guys that had grown up next door to each other, and their names were Ghenghis and Attilla. What are some crazy/weird or just wrong names you've heard people give their kids?.

when I was in the hospital with my last child (Kayla) thee was a newborn being tagged Nafarious Freedom. That's a big name for such a little baby!

I've also known two brothers Art and Drew. I guess their parents were artists!

My father worked with a Candy Cane and my brother knew a James Bond. My mom used to work with a Helen Back. Honest, all these are real people. Real people we should feel sorry for!!

My neighbours just named their son Declan after the dresden files character (do I have the right show for that?)

I've heard stories, and I hope they are just stories, of children with the names Areola and Placenta. Apparently the mother overheard their doctor speaking, and thought the names sounded pretty.
I've considered some odd names for my children if I were to ever have any. A female would be Kayleigh, after the song, not Kaylee. A male would be Atticus, from "To kill a mockingbird". Of course, they'd have reasonable first names that they could use.

As for reinterpretations of classics, my wife worked with a woman named Danyell. *shudder*

There's a couple 'round here, last name of Berger, who, inspired by the surge of nationalistic pride following 9/11, named their son Patriot. I would object to that as a ridiculous name under any circumstance, but when you pair it up with the last name, well...want some Freedom Fries with that?

I named my daughter after a tv character *hangs head in shame* But not a major character, a guest star. Ainsley Hayes from The West Wing played by Emily Procter. Luckily, we have a lot of Scottish background and Ainsley is a very traditional Scottish boy's name. So, yeah, we tell people that more often. But on occasion the husband likes to tell people she's a young republican in reference to a line from West Wing.

Of course, I've vetoed my husbands next three choices...Caprica being the most irritating. Hoepfully Ainsley's siblings will have better names than BSG.

As a teacher, I have seen some really awful name spellings ( like Brittney spelled Britkneei) but the worst was a set of twin girls whose mom decided to reference her dessert preferences in their names which were.... Lemonjello and Oranjello ( yes Lemon Jello and Orange Jello) on their 18th birthday at 8 am they were in the county court house changing their names to Jane and Sarah
Also knew some people in my parent's neighborhood whose last name was Rexick and they named their daughter Anna ( yes Anna Rexick)

Please people I beg you before naming any child say the words Supreme Court Justice and then any name you are considering. If it makes you laugh when you say the name, don't name your kid that...

Once upon a time there was a fella named Husband. Almost the entire Pacific fleet of the U.S. Navy was destroyed while under his command.

I have a friend who named her children Anakin and Arwen....THAT'S gotta bring on some behaviour later in life. If I were going to have a whole passel of critters and I damn sure ain't, leastways the names Malcolm and Kaylee are normal. Anybody who names their twin boys Jayne and Wash, well....best wishes.

Guess what their last name is? Arena. There's crazy, and then there's f**ckin' crazy, and these folks certainly fit the bill. Poor kid.

I knew someone in college called Arwen. I actually thought it was kind of a nice name, but I can understand the issues.

I also had the following conversation with my friend Libby very recently. I have known Libby for about eight years, and she announced her engagement to a guy called Alex Bell a few weeks ago. (Before you ask, his middle name is Martin.)

Libby: The only thing is, I can't take his second name.
Me: Why not?
Libby: Oh, come on! With my name?
Me: What's wrong with Elizabeth Bell?
Libby: *staring at me* Linda... that's not my name.
Me: Oh! Were you actually christened Libby?
Libby: Linda... my name is Liberty!
Me: What??? No it isn't!!!
Libby: Yes it is!!!
Me: No way!!!
Libby: How the hell can you know me for eight years and not know my name???

Well, that's still a "real" name, though, and not an entirely obscure or "exotic" and not spelled in a really "special" way, either, so it doesn't really apply.

Even names like Kaylee or Malcolm, while they have me eye-rolling, are not an objectionable choice at all, because they allow their kid some neutrality. Zoe.. Hell, Hoban! All fine with me!

Something like "Aeryn Sun Miller" or "Han" or "D'Argo" or , say, "Caprica" (Hah!)... where it's undeniable, that's where I cringe and frown and send accusatory looks in the parent's direction.

Firefly is a decent source of names, if one must, because they're all fairly ordinary. Even River is not unheard of. I actually love their use of more obscure traditional names, like Jubal.

When her kid was still too young to understand me, I used to tell her, in a very cheerful voice, "And when you're four I'm going to tell you alllll about your lesbian Wicca namesake! Oh yes! Alllll about your lesbian Wicca namesake! So you can tell alllll the other kids at school!" It's still a running joke between her Mum and me.

Teaching in Texas I get lots of dumb country names, but this past fall I had a Cougar, who admitted he was named after John Cougar Mellencamp. I asked him why they didn't name him John. He didn't know, and then topped it off by telling me his parents were named Jack and Diane.

Oh I can think of so many others... unusual is fine as long as it's really a name...Also, please no naming your kid Candy, Taffy, Muffy, or Cissy...unless you have some sort of family tradition of being strippers....
Also, if you name your kid after a literary figure...please look up the spelling!! I have student right now named after a character in the Three Musketeers named Dartanyon ( yes they meant D'Artagnan) but they spelled it phonetically Dar-Tan-Yon

BTW Tara is a place in Ireland and it's very famous... :)But I love the idea of letting the kid in on the "other" Tara!

Speaking of Buddhist names, I took an order from a woman named 'Nirvana' once, though she said her parents weren't Buddhist. So that's pretty weird.
My mom says she knew a girl in college named Nancy Ann Cianci. *shudder*
I heard so many crazy odd names working for the answering service, but none of them are popping to mind. A lot of it was the last names, though. Like 'Smallcock'. So not kidding.

I grew up in the Milwaukee, WI area. Many of the towns, cities & lakes have Native American names. For example, Milwaukee generally translates to "pleasant land" or "gathering place [by the water]" (its on the western edge of Lake Michican).

I was back home visiting a few years back, and stopped in a store. I was stunned by the name tag of one of the store employees:

Wakeesha. Milwaukee is next to the city of Waukesha. Granted the emphasis of the girl's name is the second syllable, and not the first as in the city name, but still... Made me shudder just a little.

I'd rather be a smartass than a dumbass...

Let's see, as of right now Kennedy and Reagan are popular names for girls, and I've seen a few Kaylees (including one spelling it Caylei). I've worked with a kid at art camp named Buck, graduated with a Holden McGuiness (Holden= Hold'em lmao). Seen every frackin' spelling for Ashley under the sun, including my own, because my parents loved the name but decided to be unique with the spelling.

Needless to say, no one can spell my name right and I like to go by Ash.

He maintains that his oldest son will be named Luke Sky Walker. But then he's a spiteful Irish guy that claims that he wants his kids to grow up able to cope with life's hardships. I still think he's a prick if he goes through with it.

I am one of those kids with at weird spelling: Meghann. My mother was in labor reading the freaking Thornbirds so I am named after Meggie. I have never met anyone else with that spelling, close but never the same.

My name's spelling at least has story behind it and everyone always gushes over Richard Chamberland.

I don't know what kind of crack people are one when they are naming their kids. I have added Kaylee to my girls names list, but I could never torture my kids with Coco or Apple or even Kal-el (yes, I am a Supmerman fan).

What ever you do: please have a story and make sure that they will not get beat up on the playground, PLEASE!!!!!

the kids I felt sorry for were the ones that had names their parents had entirely made up...these kids were never too sure of themselves, and I believe its because their name had no historical link or backstory ( like: we gave you an original name to encourage a unique personality etc.). it was as if they were floating around disconnected from the rest of the world...so please people if you are going to invent a name make sure you give it some significance by creating a reason or story to go with it.

Isn't Catie a pretty regular nickname for Cate? (Similar as with Kate/Katie?) And don't grandparents often use nicknames? Does this bother your niece or just you?

Any time you name a child you have to consider any and all potential nicknames arising from that name and decide if you can live with them. Because you'll have to. I'm very rarely Linda. I'm Lin, Linnie, Linna, Loo and even occasionally Lindie Loops. If there's any kind of affectionate way of twisting a name, even if it's longer than the original name you may be guaranteed that someone will call the kid that and stick with it.
Geekmafia's real name is Stewart. I call him Stu. Mum lectured me every time I called him that for years and I still won out of sheer persistance. I just have to add, in the Asian culture, espically in Hong Kong and China, young men and women are encouraged to choose western names in order to function more effectively in dealing with western business, I am employed by an Asian company and frequent Hong Kong and China and here are some of the names i have heard, and know from y travels

Mr. Constant Lee
Mr. Elvis Ho
Mr. Frank Lee

Many other are just off the wall but some should have had guidance when picking their names.

I guess I'll have to concur with desktophippie there. Nicknames are going to happen, regardless of what the people thinking up the name intended. It's like trying to control the weather, impossible and frustrating, so it's better to just give up. *g*

When I was growing up in Boise, there was a car dealership, family owned, who's name was Wolfe. Their adult sons, who did the ads on TV - Timber and Grey.

I hear that one. Doesn't happen as often as it did in grade school, but I often have people asking me what my full name is. I'm like, "It's Rose." and they go "But what's it short for? Rosie? Rosemarie? Rosalind?" It's not short for anything you dumb

s! It's Rose! There were a bunch of people in sixth grade who called me all manner of "Rose+something" names. I don't mind so much when it's an affectionate nickname, but they were just doing it to annoy me.

Not heard any *extreme* names myself - my cousin's name is Jane and she married a guy with the last name Payne.
Yeah.
Fortunately she's kept her maiden name so it's Jane Sherwood-Payne.
Still, could have been disastrous

But often I've shocked my friends with suggestions I've made for my own children's names.

Favourites being "Phleghm" if its a boy and "Clitoris" if its a girl

(I think they're praying I don't ever have kids)

my name is actually Rosaria. I shortened it to Rose so that people would stop mispronouncing it: Rosina, Rosetta, Rosemary, Rosanna, Rosalia, Rosarina...Aaagh!! what's so hard about Rose+aria? another reason I changed to Rose, is that the Azaria Chamberlain murder case was a hot topic when I was 13, and people kept calling me Azaria, and making stupid dingo jokes. people still don't get my name right, and call me rosa, rosie or Roz. Also my Dad calls me Ross because he can't pronounce Rose.Some family members and old friends call me Sara, as that is what my name would be shortened to back in the old country(Sicily). I never answer to Rosa but tolerate the others. My niece is Estella Rose, but we just call her Boo or Peanut.
