With the Avengers making cinematic box office history. According to Box Office Mojo the Avengers has beaten the Dark Knight in a 24 Day domestic total:

Avengers $513.7M

Dark Knight $441.6M

But overall the Dark Knight still leads by some $20M (which I assume the Avengers will bypass next weekend). So what do we have to look forward to, plenty! Here I will cover some of the more known productions coming from La La Land.

MIB is out and already has laid down the gauntlet for Box Office Champ: $55M for the 3 day domestic take. But is it any good?

June 1

Snow White and The Huntsman - Charlize Theron is scary good as the evil queen, at least in the trailers.

June 8

The much-anticipated Ridley Scott vehicle Prometheus, Ridley Scott returning to deep space, need I say more.

Madagascar 3 - I'm taking my nieces, have fun.

June 15

Rock of Ages - This is strictly for us older rockers, with an all-star cast, based on the Broadway hit, looks funny.

June 22

Brave - Pixar animation, Need I say more.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - The title alone suggests that Hi-larity will ensue, could be a sleeper hit.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World - interesting premise, end of the world, looking for a long-lost love - typical boy meets girl story. Stars Steve Carell and Kiera Knightley.

To Rome with Love - for those who enjoy Woody Allen films

June 29

G.I. Joe: Retaliation - The Rock, Bruce Willis, bound to be lots of explosions and shoot-em-up action. There is an audience for this - the 30-somethings of this generation.

Magic Mike - never heard of this but it stars Channing Tatum, and he's taking it off. The ladies will flock to this movie.

People Like Us - Chris Pine (Star Trek) and Elizabeth Banks (whom I love) is in this tear-jerker.

July 3

Amazing Spiderman - yet another installment, different villian.

Savages - Oliver Stone's new film with Taylor Kitsch, Salma Hayek, Benecio Del Toro - about the pot business.

July 13

Ice Age - animation, don't know much about this installment in the series, love Skrat the Squirrel.

Ted - Live action/animation from the creator of Family Guy, with Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis. A man and his Teddy Bear.

July 20

The much-anticipated sequel to the Dark Knight - The Dark Knight Rises, no more is needed to be said.

July 27

Killer Joe - a movie that has been given the NC-17 rating for violence/sexuality - don't know much other than Matthew McConaughey is in this one.

The Watch - A comedy (the name was changed from Neighborhood Watch after the Trayvon Martin shooting) with Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill about, what else, a neighborhood watch.

Aug 3

Borne Legacy - This time Jeremy Renner takes a turn, with Ed Norton, Rachel Weisz, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Albert Finney.

Total Recall - The remake of the 90's release with Colin Farrell in the lead. Apparently it will be closer to the Philip K. Dick short story than the original film.

So there you have it. I know, not much in way of description, and other than TDKR and Prometheus, not much in the way of excitement. There are some independent films of note that may not get much exposure in the coming weeks but here are a few:

Moonrise Kingdom - a coming of age comedy about 2 young kids who run away together in a small town, Wes Anderson directs.

Piranha 3DD - the sequel about the man-eating fish.

The Expendables 2 - Chuck Norris, JCVD, joins Statham, Jet Li and Arnold (among others) to blow shit up "real good"

360 - with Anthony Hopkins, Jude Law and Rachel Weisz.

Premium Rush - Joseph Gordon Levitt, about a NYC bike messenger with dubious content chased by a crooked cop.

Hope Springs - Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones - getting couples therapy from Steve Carell.

Lawless - Tom Hardy and Shia LeBeouf - about bootlegging brothers during the depression.

ParaNorman - animated film from the makers of Coraline.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I'm sure I'll see several of those, but my most anticipated films are The Dark Knight Rises and Prometheus. It is surprising that I've remained relatively spoiler free on both of them considering how many entertainment sites I visit on a regular basis. I've managed to avoid watching the trailers for them even at the theater. I take my iPod and close my eyes and listen to music when those trailers come on.

Good for you EC, I'm the same way. I don't watch the trailers over and over again (like I used to do) and avoid anything that might spoil the experience at the theatre.

My son and I discussed, several years ago, a way in which one can introduce the film without spoiling it with trailers that show all the best parts of the film. A prologue if you will. You show the characters dealing with an issue and leave the best stuff for the main film.

Just an idea.

Hey Shiny! Nice breakdown of the 2012 cinematic year :D Quite an effort I dare say.

The only films that have interested me this year were Avengers Assemble (Obviously) and Moonrise Kingdom. I love Wes Andersons's films.

I can understand the hoopla over the new Batman film but it's not high on my list. Bale sorta rubs me up the wrong way. I think it's his voice as Batman, and his Bruce Wayne is just... Well it doesn't seem like he's trying half the time. But that's just my opinion. However there's no question how committed Nolan is in producing quality work and for that I think he should be commended. I dare say it'll do well.

And trailers. I can't stand them!!! These days it's near impossible to avoid them. All year I had been trying to avoid trailers for Avengers and had been doing a pretty good job, even with it being two weeks into it's release, but the other day I'm watching F1 and suddenly the Avengers trailer popped up!! Man I almost broke my neck trying to leave the room!!! (Damn furniture!) Bloody trailers they pop up everywhere and at anytime - you just can't avoid them. It's infuriating.

If you follow films and cinema even a little, it's not hard to see the internal language of a film - even in it's trailer, and from that, be able to gauge where the story is going to go; so it does indeed spoil the main event for you. I really wish this current trailer fad would abate some...

It's about the girl accidentaly turning her mother into a bear and spending half the story trying to undo it and finding a way to get along with her mother. It looks like a true Celtic lore type story in that if you have ever read any they are kind of known for going off on a wacky skewed magical tangent and not really having a point...I'll still go see it, but at least now I expect it to be dorky.

Hey there Sleepy, good to hear from you.

Batman - TDKR is greatly anticipated and I've managed to avoid most trailers and photo galleries. There are some things that should be left alone and marketers often, in their eagerness to sell, oversaturate and bombard the public with images that are key to the story and the film. For me, I'm greatly disappointed in the ad business. No imagination. I'm hoping that Nolan opts to not release a 6-minute version of what he did for TDK. I thought, back then, that he took our idea (my son and I) and ran with it. I thought, 'he's intelligent, maybe he figured it out' only to find out it was 6 minutes from the movie. The one saving grace was that it revealed nothing about The Batman, which I found intriquing.

He was in the ballpark, as we say here, but could have taken it a step further. Allow me to indulge. Let's say he shows the Joker as a young man, perhaps as a teen, and his father is abusing him (as suggested in the movie, which I thought Nolan handled brilliantly, how he kept changing the story, it just showed his madness. Which is what a true storyteller does - shows, doesn't tell). Anyway he shows us Joker's past and what he had to deal with, plus the fact that maybe he was slightly coo-coo to begin with, and what may have pushed him over the edge. Life of crime and general juvenile delinquency, yada - yada we then see him terrorizing people as the Joker. Too much? Well, it's a thought we (my son and I discussed one day as we complained about the spoiler-like trailers Hollywood produces these days).

But Nolan does produce quality films, that challenge, as well as, entertain. I'm still scratching my head over Memento. And I absolutely love Inception, his masterpiece. But Bale does not give a complete performance regarding Bruce Wayne, and his Batman voice does grate a bit on the ears. Otherwise his Batman is solid. I recently rewatched the original Batman (with Michael Keaton) and his Batman voice was much more acceptable. In comparison, where Keaton's disguising voice is a low whisper, Bale's is a loud roar. Sort of counterproductive, I think. But I do like when he yells at the bad guys (in reading the first Batman comics I got the impression that he was trying to scare the shit out of the bad guys). I really liked Burton's approach as to Batman's intelligence as a detective/crimefighter. Nolan's Batman relies more on the gadgets than on his ability to think on his feet. That is not to say that his films are not intelligent, but I really like his realism. It's like watching a real crazy dude dressed up as a bat.

Went a long way to say, I hate trailers, at least the traditional Hollywood trailers today. No imagination.

Prometheus, did you see it? Let me know what you think. Me: Beautifully shot, left me wanting more, slightly disappointed. Fassbender is amazing, Theron was solid and Rapace is a rising star (although she doesn't have a deep character development here, I think the best is yet to come). Loved her as the Dragon Tatoo girl.

Thanks for the post.

I really like the way Pixar handles their stories, except for Cars 2, which I heard was not good, I like their approach. I think they will handle it well. Oh, BTW, that story of the bear being the mom, it's not much different than the magic used to give The little Mermaid legs and feet.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing it.

I have to say your list makes me think Hollywood is in desperate need of some competition. That said I really enjoyed the Avengers and Dark Shadows. I enjoyed hating Prometheus, but I did not go intending to hate it. It seems that crystal skull syndrome has infected almost the entire field.

ETA: I was also quite fond of John Carter of Mars.

Absolutely right, which is why I'm not a big fan of children's shows that are completely based on magic. I'll watch them, but I prefer the plausible and the futuristic and a good interpersonal story any day of the week. Too much magic crap I think confuses children as to understanding the reality of this world and the need to work towards attainable goals. My kid for example, for a long while didn't understand that things in children's museums and Disney wouldn't hurt her or have magical powers, and I never thought to ask "Are you afraid of Stitch because you think he might eat you like he eats everything??"
Just saying "It's a regular person in a costume" didn't do much to fix that either, It wasn't until she saw one take off their head that she got it.
Since then I have done a great bit of weeding out of our regular watching movies...

Little children have trouble with movie magic. My son, when he was 3, watched Pinicchio with me and he became scared of the whale. I had to explain to him that the movie was not real, but it didn't really help until he was 5 or 6 years old. After which, it became his favorite.
