There is another movie in theaters now demonstrating the phenomenon of diminishing returns on each new film in the series. Kung Fu Panda 4 (or is it 5 if you count Secrets of the Furious Five?) has the same problem as Ghostbusters: each new movie sells fewer tickets worldwide than the previous movie, but Panda is not yet losing money.

Yeah... but at the same time it's also different. It certainly made a lot more money than I ever would have expected it to had it interested me in the least and I made any commentary about it before it was released.

Also, somehow, they really managed to slash the budget on KFP4. It only cost $85 Million to make. Adjusted for inflation KFP3 cost $182,188,353, KFP2 cost $208,277,800, and the original KFP cost $188,586,132.

So on an $85 Million budget and with $504 Million gross worldwide, they've managed to make 593% of the production budget back. Had they not slashed their prior budgets by more than half and went with something like $190 Million for the budget instead, they'd be sitting at only 265% of the production budget. Still a win, but just barely.

And with that in mind, back to the topic of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and it's $100 Million budget...

Had they instead kept the budget to only $75 Million like they did with Afterlife, they'd be breathing a sigh of relief as they just broke even on Sunday with every remaining day in the theaters being profit, instead of still being $63 Million in the hole.

Had they gone beyond that and did what the makers of Kung Fu Panda 3 did and slashed their budget from the previous movie by 53% and only spent $40 Million on it and now they'd be looking at 470% returns on the production budget. Not quite KFP4's 593% return, but with gas left in the tank it should have easily hit a 500% return on investment before it exits theaters.

They've got to get these budgets under control if they want to survive in the future.

That was pretty much the main factor for the inevitable Frozen Empire failure for Sony. I listed all the other reasons out in the OP and whichever page had the post where I broke down all the inflation adjusted numbers for every Ghostbusters movie, but even if none of those other reasons existed there was no way this movie was not going to lose money as soon as it was confirmed it cost $100 Million to make.

Stand-up comic Max Bernal and his 11-year-old autistic son Ezra set off on a road trip in this vivid portrait of a family figuring out how to understand one another. Having recently blown up his career and his marriage, Max is living with his father Stan and is profoundly at odds with his soon-to-be ex-wife Jenna about how to address their son’s special needs. When Ezra is expelled from yet another school, Max makes the controversial decision to take Ezra in the middle of the night, embarking on a cross-country odyssey.

I do not doubt that Ezra is Rain Man (1988) for the 21st Century, except Dustin Hoffman's role in Rain Man is hopefully played by an actual autistic child because Hollywood is all about authenticity.

Well... this is probably a post better suited for the 2024 Hollywood thread than the Ghostbusters thread.

Aside from my tempered enthusiasm of Deadpool 3 because of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine return, I can't say I disagree with you. None of that list looks appealing to me, but because so many of them are sequels or prequels or reboots I wouldn't even have to look into most of them because I already know I have no interest.

"Not Another Church Movie"??? Jesus Christ. I thought we were finally rid of those low-effort parody movies.

I don't need to see Ezra either. We had something better than Ezra back in the 90s. I'm good.

Are you an elitist? Hollywood is going broke because it never knew what the people wanted for entertainment. That is summarized by Hollywood screenwriter William Goldman's famous quote "Nobody in this business knows anything."

Meanwhile, Tyler Perry has gotten rich making stinking movies far, far away from Hollywood in Atlanta. He knows what Hollywood never will.

Tyler Perry stands on the top position in the list of richest actor in the world 2024 with a net worth of $1 Billion, followed by Jerry Seinfeld, Dwayne Johnson and Shah Rukh Khan.

Okay. I still fail to see how this has anything to do with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire doesn't even make Bruce's Top 10 for the weekend, and the 10th spot is only predicted to make $2 Million.

I'm a little surprised by that since it only lost -23% and -27% over the last two weekends, and a -30% drop this weekend would put it at $2.275 Million. But it did lose over 600 theaters this week.

Any way that turns out, the US gross alone will bump it up to over $190 Million.

It may possibly see another $5 Million internationally come Monday if it keeps the same trajectory it has over the last several weeks, but if Bruce is already predicting a much larger drop this weekend in the US, I really have no reason to believe that it won't see the same larger drop internationally as well.

It may or may not end up at $195 Million this weekend. That's probably a coin flip, but I'm leaning heavily toward it not doing so. If it does, it would still be $55 Million short of breaking even at that point with no possible path ahead of it to come close to breaking even for Sony, having then only grossed about $7.5 Million this week worldwide and a much higher likelihood of losing -50% or more week after week from here on out.

As I said from the beginning, had Sony maintained the same $75 Million budget of Afterlife, it would have only needed $187.5 Million to break even. That number was met just this last Sunday once the International numbers had come in for the previous week.

But with that additional $25 Million added to the budget in this sequel, that was an additional $62.5 Million it needed to break even that it will never overcome.

I think Paul Rudd right now is at the top of the list actors for Hollywood to start axing the bloated paydays with his back-to-back flops of Quantumania last year and Frozen Empire in 2024. That's a shame. I like Paul Rudd, but these budgets have to be trimmed by 25% to 50% or more going forward or Hollywood is going to go broke. If Paul Rudd and any of these other celebrities like Gosling and Cavill can't bring people to see movies on name recognition alone, they don't deserve these huge paydays anymore.

That might also be said as well about the "last movie star" Tom Cruise, after his massive Mission Impossible failure last year. The only thing that might save him with that one is the fact that both parts were shot at the same time and there's a possibility they front-loaded most of those budget costs on the figure for the first part last year (maybe for tax purposes???). But if the budget for Part 2 comes in just as high or even higher than Part 1, that's going to be two massive flops in a row for Cruise as well.

The Church of Scientology will not be happy.

Ghostbusters did just barely crack $195 Million.

$195,103,000

It's still outperforming even my updated prediction tables by around $3.5 Million for the 7th week, and so it's about a week ahead of where I thought it would be now. That's good-ish news. It won't be nearly enough though.

I'm interested in seeing the final number. It's pretty hard to really pin down anything this year because the box office is behaving far different than it did last year.

I'm sure it's going to hit $200 Million at this point, but I have no idea how long that will take.

My guess is that it falls short of that by the end of next weekend, but it probably will manage it by the weekend of the 18th if it's not pulled from a ton of theaters here and internationally before then.

California produces too many movies. Most are not good but if you wait for one and a half months, the not-particularly entertaining film will be available at a price that matches the time-wasting and worthlessness of the product.

Just to note, the leak of the movie had nothing to do with the failure of Ghostbusters. This has been an obvious flop since opening weekend and it's all been documented in this thread.

Okay.

But the problem is bigger than that in 2024.

California isn't making too many movies right now. They've hardly put out anything compared to any year prior to now in the last 30 years. They've got to pad out the theaters every week with old movies.

Joe Biden*'s economy is what's killing Hollywood in 2024. Up through the middle of 2023 people were still gladly going to the theaters in droves to watch shitty movies.

They're not doing that anymore now.
