OR- wait for the extended 3D version?
OR- wait for the extended 2D/3D two-disk set?
OR- wait for the all-versions set with the plush figures & collectible bow & arrow?

It was mildly entertaining. A nice way to spend some time w/ family and friends at Christmas time. But unlike, say Jurassic Park - 1, or LOTR, I have no real interest in the story or the FX. Pretty stuff on the screen held my attention for about.... time's up.

Moon was a better movie.

Even Star Trek was better.

I'd by those DVDs before Avatar.

I'll be waiting for commentaries and extras, since this is gonna be just a bare-bones release. 3D would be pointless for me since I don't have a 3D set (and really, my imagination tends to do it on its own).

I'm actually more interested in the upcoming novelization, and Cameron's promised novel-only spin-offs (which will be in-continuity with future films, but will chronicle unrelated events). Not only am I more of a prose fan by nature, but I find Cameron's intricate and detailed worldbuilding to be even more engrossing than the technical advancements.

It looks like he's trying to establish an Expanded Universe, only deliberately, whereas the Star Wars and Star Trek EUs just kinda happened as a side-effect of the film/TV franchises (which is why we get all these canonicity debates).

Since I dream of doing the same with my creations, I'm eager to see how he goes about it.

I'll rent Blu-Ray, but I don't want to mess with the whole 3D thing. Last few times I've tried (since a horrific recurring eye disease that had me legally blind in one eye for weeks at a time), the whole 3D thing just does not work for me. My brain can't process the signals correctly anymore to make it look 3-D; it just looks blurry to me.

I loved it at the cinema, yeah, fine, not the best film ever, but I'm a sucker for great looking films, and it did look good.

And, as with CIA, I too already own Moon and Star Trek (both on Bluray too!)

All that said, I won't be buying the first release of this. Cameron is already preparing an extended cut for re-release at Imax, and, although I'm not THAT bothered about it being longer, I will wait to see what specials are included on the next release before I spend what little money I have on it.

Still have to buy The Lovely Bones on BluRay first. And The Fountain. And Let the Right One In. After those three, I'll see where I stand with Avatar.

I don't think I'll have to. My friend was a total sucker for all things avatar. She saw the movie and described it to me as life changing. She doesn't get out much.

But she's gonna buy the blu-ray upon release here probably, and she has no blu-ray player to watch it on. Which is where I come in. My home theatre system apparently doubles as hers in times of need. That works for me.

As a successful scifi flick I'd give it a 7 out of 10. In the history of Film Marketing I'd give it a bazilion. It convinced ticket buyers during a down economy to pay almost double for a *special effect* that imho was only occasionally rewarding and actually lowered the visual appeal of the film from it's 2D version, which will look bloody marvelous in my new BluRay ... next year once the price drops.

My Son said there was too much violence & "S" words, yet he DEMANDED to see it with me again tonight. He liked that it ended well, and said he would like to see conflicts end with the innocents winning.
He also liked the Ewoks winning back their planet from the Empire in ROTJ.

On a technical note, the 2D version was WAAY more watchable than the 3D version- 3D is STILL a gimmick IMO.

Two questions though: how are the armoured "bulls" on the floating islands, and why are the windshields on the Marine ships not bullet (or BIG arrow) proof?

Whatever, good show nonetheless. *** for the spectacle.

That is very true. It is already a long film but when it comes to films I am a bit of a purist in that I want to see as much as possible of a story without it just being a bunch of deleted scenes.
Cameron has proven to me that he is great with extended editions - The Abyss, T2 and Aliens all have worthy longer versions - so I have high hopes for Avatar in it's extended version.
If it feels too long I'll just watch it in two sittings. Don't normally like to do this but I am willing too.

I havn't watched it yet, but reviews are saying it's the nicest looking Blu Ray out, too. They used every bit of the 50 gig disk, with only a tiny bit of data space used for the basic menu.

Also, just as a curiosity: The aspect ratio is different, depending on the disk you get. The DVD is in 2:35:1, and the Blu Ray is 1:78:1 (full 16 x 9) - which mirrors the theatrical release, which was 2:35:1 in 2D and 1:78:1 in 3D and IMAX.

Shorter, actually. Unlike a typical pan'n'scan situation, the film was made for 1:78, then the tops and bottoms were trimmed for the 2:35 version. He also shot Titanic this way (though oddly, they only rendered the effects in 2:35, so on non FX shots, head room was added, on FX shots, the sides were trimmed).

I saw it opening day just for the experience of the thing, 'cause I'd never seen a 3D movie before... and it was the most amazing thing I'd ever encountered in a movie theater!
Never cared for one second if the story was lacking.
Everybody in the theater applauded at the end (same as when I saw it a month later!), and a bunch of us (all strangers) sat around after the lights came up, discussing what we'd just seen. Not a single one of them expressed disappointment with the story; they all had awed expressions on their faces.
I want to see it a third time in 3D when it gets re-released in November, but I don't EVER want to see it on a small screen, even if it was in 3D, and I sure as Hell don't want to see it in 2D, regardless of the size of the screen!

My theatrical experience was very cool, but I'm primarily a "picture" person. On my TV I saw detail that I totally missed due to the 3D in the movies. In short- I was less distracted.

But that's just me. I grew up with 3D movies so I don't think of em as such a big deal.

Oh, Avitar was definitely the best 3D I ever saw in a fictional movie, but I've seen better in documentaries. Red & green is old school.
I especially remember Spacehunter: Adventures In The Forbidden Zone giving me a wicked headache both times I saw it.
