There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

While everyone else is watching Star Wars (I'll get to it eventually), I saw a film that is as opposite of that as you could possibly imagine. Brooklyn, starring Saoirse Ronan, is a simple tale, but so well acted, written and filmed, it is likely to end up the best I've seen this year. Granted, I haven't been to the theater much lately, but the majority of big releases either don't appeal to me or else don't satisfy me the way they seem to for others. One example being Mad Max: Fury Road, which I enjoyed, but I still can't understand the consensus opinion, including the awards it's already won.

I don't even care if Brooklyn gets nominated or wins any awards, it's still great. Saoirse should be nominated, along with Julie Walters, who I didn't even recognize, but she was fantastic too. The guy who played her boyfriend/husband Tony (Emory Cohen) also deserves mention. It's set in 1950-52, and other than a couple of scenes with strong language, it is much like movies that were produced then. No, I don't think that's a negative.

It's likely I caught its last showing here. Sixteen screens at that theater, another eighteen in town, and yet they felt it only deserved two showings a day. Until today that is, when I guess they figured The Force Awakens needed another screen, so it was down to just one. They still don't have tomorrow's schedule online, but I suspect Brooklyn will not be on it.

I searched out the trailer after reading your post. It's something I would go the theater to see, but I don't go to the theater to watch anything really. I will however remember seeing the trailer when it comes to the small screen because you are right. It seems to be a very well told story.

I've heard of this film a few months back (end of summer) and placed it on my must-see list. It has received many accolades and positive reviews in the months since (although that is not my motivation to see this film).

Saoirse Ronan is the best reason to see this film, for my money. She is a
well-balanced and talented actor whom I admire. I will, in the coming days off for the holiday, make a point to see it in the theater (which for me
is the best treat).

Found it! Don't know why I didn't see this thread earlier today, but here I am!

I finally got to see this film. EC, I always respect your picks even though I
may not always agree. But, this time, I wholeheartedly agree - this film is a gem.
And for all the reasons you give, except I would add Domhnall Gleeson, her love interest in Ireland, to receive accolades for his performance. You could feel
his anguish at losing Eilis to America and to her husband Tony.

What I really loved was that old fashioned charm, it was as though it was a
character unto itself. Great film EC, I mean it, great film!

I felt it important to let you know that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I recall many on this board lamenting the film Atonement, which might have been my first exposure to Ronan.

How many in this thread have seen Atonement? And which disliked it?

To Saoirse? I guess it was The Lovely Bones, which was made after Atonement, but I saw it first.

It's Saoirse's birthday today. She's only 22, so I think it's safe to say her best years are ahead of her.

Well then, Happy Birthday Saoirse! She has so much talent and it's wonderfully understated. And yes, I dare say that she has a couple, or so,
Oscar noms in her future.
