Bill Maher - "I think this is the week Mitt Romney lost the election,
I do think he kind of made himself toast, I’m not saying that because that’s what I wish"

Ezra Klein - "fact is that the last time Romney led in the RCP poll average was 10/11/2011. He's in real trouble."

CATPIRATE

KPO -Correct, more unrest in the world. Embassies sacked, riots in Europe, and Florida cities burn with race killings. Fast and Furious documents are held back till after the election. Independent ivestigation to OBama's role in it. Eric Holder will be fired and sent to jail. Rumors of impeachment if Obama is elected. The Euro bailout fails again. Germans then France pullout of the Euro. Greeks get on the silver standard. Gold and Silver prices go to all time highs. Civil war in Spain. Italy colapses. But the big one is Russia. Putnin becomes the new zsar. Installs a form of marshall law. People are excuted who speak out. The Russian military regains it's reign invades Syria. China sends troop to Africa to protect it's growing colonalism. The surprise is their carrier fleet set sails ahead of schedule by 10 years. Jews from around the world come home to protect Israel from Iran. In America the X factor is renewed one more season surprise guest not revealed.

DREAMTROVE

Obama will trounce Romney, but it won't be a real world event. It's a staged theater event. Romney isn't trying to win, he's trying to convince people that there is an axis of opposition to Obama that is 97% Obama, whom he works for, and that the other 3% is called "Obama should be more pro-corporate police state than he already is if that's even conceivably possible" a message that Obama wrote because he wants to move in that direction, and wants the republicans to pull him that way. Because Obama is Bush is Clinton, it's all the NWO as Bush Sr. said.

It's the same team, and they're playing you guys like a dogfight. Sorry, just calling it as I see it. There's a reason I avoid FFF on these election year slides. See y'all other side of november, keep it shiny, don't lose any more bagels.

I'm curious as to why the Koch brothers would pledge $400,000,000 of their own money only to one side, if both sides are identical in their beliefs and agenda. Wouldn't splitting the money more likely guarantee an outcome they'd be most happy with? Hell, wouldn't just not spending the money at all have the same outcome? Are you in the habit of spending hundreds of millions of dollars needlessly on something you know won't help you or make any difference in your life whatsoever?

There is a lot of overlap, sure. But yes, I think there is also a great deal of difference. To say they're entirely the same is just incredibly myopic.

And either way, your personal diatribe about how the world works according to DT still isn't the point of the thread. You want to soap-box, start a thread fo your own.

DREAMTROVE

Nick

Why would I listen to what they say? What they say has nothing to do with what they do, and it is no different from what their party spokesperson said last time. My party, the democratic party, has been running on a near identical platform revolving around the buzzwords of hope and change since it was introduced by FDR in 1932.

What they say is what the party told them to say. That's designed to split the voters in half so the 1%ers running can clean up the support of the sheeple.

What I care about is what they do. What Obama did in Illinois, what Romney did in Massachusetts, and now what Obama did in his first term. Not that it will make a huge amount of difference as no one could get in without being in the club, and being a 1%er, and president is nowhere near as powerful a position as people think it is.

What worries me more about these two people as individuals is actually outside of either box: It's what Obama did as a neo-malthusian, his vision of constitutional law, and his involvement in the chicago school, the last of which being the main reason I didn't vote for him last time, because I thought he would be an economic disaster. I think I was proven correct. However, my biggest personal worry for me with Romney is what he did at Bain capital which leads me to suspect he would be an even bigger economic disaster. That said, I can't vote for either one: One guy I support 5% and the other one 10% is not enough reason to choose one. It's sort of like choosing which bully should beat you up in the playground after school on the grounds that one of them once gave you his chocolate milk.

Mike,

Actually, everything I just said to Nick first, but adding this:

I think the president's salary is $400k, not $400M, but not directly what I meant. I mean that the Koch brothers invaded Ron Paul's tea party to make it their own because they saw the opportunity to become power brokers and sell policy to corporations. I think it works something like this. Koch bros give $ to Rand Paul to get him elected, and in return, they get to be the channel for the resale of his policy decisions. Then corporations step up and offer more campaign $ and various other fringe benefits (hookers and coke and a little cash on the side) in exchange for policy votes in the company's favor. This system, unfortunately, we're calling "democracy."

ETA: to clarify, by employees i meant people like Rand Paul, or whomever they throw money at, I think you got that part, but I figured other people were reading, might get confusing.

Flag these two as well.

Pensylvania/Sandusky abuses scale wider and deeper than admitted - as I see one of Ambramoffs pimped kids has come forward, dunno the details of that, but he's pointed the finger square at Sandusky, and there's more behind it.

And, well, Mitt the Shit - I think we can cap that one with an I-told-you-so here.

One potentive prediction - the Israel-firsters and the likudnik asshats over there are less than pleased with Obama not hopping to their tune on command and have started throwing in behind Romney since they think he's more gullible and bendable, and when his campaign finally implodes there's a substantial chance that might pry our political crowd an inch or too offa practically fellating the bastards.

M52 - "Unfortunately nearly half the country is still going to vote for Romney and the GOP will still control the House. The GOP is far from being finished off."

Signy - "The REAL problems for the winner... whoever it is ... go far beyond the Democratic/ Republican and center/right domestic dynamic. Economists are thinking there could be an even bigger economic downturn waiting in 2013, which could be precipitated by any number of non-USA events. Greece might still exit the Eurozone, which would drive Spain and Portugal into bankruptcy. The Chinese economy looks like it's coming down for a hard landing because their policy of increasing internal demand and investing in infrastructure hasn't been enough. Brazil is slowing down. Everyone is looking for a market for their goods, because very few are able to buy. There is also the problem global climate shift..."

ETA:

A few more, this first one I agree with and wanted to make myself just before Romney's response to the US Libya Ambassador being killed:

Kevin Drum - "The mudslinging from the Romney campaign is going to get really, really nasty and desperate over the next few weeks."

Kevin Drum - "The smart money is shortly going to start deserting Romney and focusing downballot instead. The conservative base never liked Romney all that much to begin with, and I don't think it will take much for them to abandon him."

Paul Krugman (on Romney) - "although the odds are now against him, this is by no means over."

Paul Krugman - "This still might be a close election thanks to the weakness of the economy, and a better candidate than Romney might have had a better chance of pulling it off. But the long-term fundamentals are not good for Republicans."

Yesterday I asked questions, today I'll answer them myself....

Will Hillary Clinton resign? .....Never
Will The House panel get answers from anyone involved, or will it be another waste of time? .....Already getting startling answers
Will the CBS reporter get fired for her great investigative reporting on this because it hurts Obama?......No
Will this come up during the VP debate Thursday, and if so, what wll Biden say?.....I hope so. Biden will say as little as possible, or just continue the absurd lie that it was due to a you tube video
Will this come up during the 10/22 Presidential debate, and if so, what will Romney accuse Obama of?.....Yes, big time. I'm not sure how Romney will handle it.

On the upcoming VP debate:

kpo:
Quote:

Call me crazy but I don't think Biden will lose the VP debate - and might even edge it. Reasons why:

* The Obama campaign knows they have to fight back after the first debate
* The job of VP is not very demanding, so Biden will have had better preparation than Obama
* Biden will be willing to get down and dirty and go on the attack and counter-attack, without having to worry about 'appearing presidential'.
* Ryan will struggle to position himself as a centrist as Romney was able to do - he has no moderate history

Jongstraw:

Quote:

"I think Biden will win this debate. I say that because Ryan doesn't have nearly the same aura of likeability as Biden. Ryan's basically a slick numbers wonk, and his oratory is somewhat stilted. He starts in on financial stuff and everyone falls asleep. Biden's going to be fired up...

Predictions on the second debate (better late than never):

kpo - "I think Obama will do better in this debate, and enough to halt Romney's momentum in the polls."

Kwicko - "I predict that no matter what happens, Republicans will claim that Romney won."

HK - "Mitt's momentum is already flagging, and it will continue. Romney will be off his game, the slightest hint of fear returning to in his eyes, because honestly he's terrified of losing. Obama will risk the "angry black man" thing for once. But overall he will be "Mr. Congeniality." Of course it will be ruled a Romney win by the ditto heads because it is simply impossible for Obama to be good at anything in their eyes. Obama win."

HK - "Also, much higher viewership than the first will further hurt Romney in the polls."

Auraptor (on Obama) - "He's all but vowed to be a dick to Romney, but it's an empty threat. Coming off aggressive, and rude, as Biden was to Ryan in the VP debate will backfire in a Town Hall like forum."

Auraptor - "Most likely outcome will be a draw, where either side will claim victory. If there's a repeat of the 1st debate, this race is over. Some ( like Neal Boortz ) go so far as to claim that, if Romney wipes the floor w/ Obama again, there won't even BE a 3rd debate."

And some fallout:

Now O is back, and the momentum will shift to where it was before the first debate: Romney near dead in the water. But now it's less useful for the superPACs to shift to the down-ticket races."

Mal4 - "Based on policies, I think that this election is a goner, and it's been gone for a while now. Romney is just so damned weak. Why the hell would a party run a 1%-er, when the 1%-ers are the prime scapegoats of the day? Stupid. Just really stupid."

Niki - "I think Romney is on his way to being toast."

Hero - "The biggest weathervane of who won came from the focus groups of undecided voters. In every case those voters shifted dramatically towards Romney. In fact the shift was as pronounced as what occurred in the first debate."

Hero - "I note for the record that Obama is polling in the 45-47% range, yet only 39% thought he won the debate. This does not make for a winning night."

Jongstraw - "Perhaps Axelrod and Plough have taken Obama down a losing path, a road to ruin. Who knows."

He's already called this election and the next one as well!

Pre 3rd debate predictions:

kpo - "I predict no clear winner in this one."

HK - "Romney's mush-mouthism will be up for discussion in all but the most conservative media. He's in a bind, because all of the right's talking points--Obama is a failure, Obama wants to shut down the Defense Department--simply can't hold up in a two-way conversation. Obama's gonna spike the ball on this one, but the media will continue to strive for "balance" and downplay Obama's obvious command of the stage. In any case, Obama win."

Hero - "Barrack Obama will be cold."

Mal4:

"1. There won't be any sound bite as good as "binders full of women". It's just not possible to top that. Prove me wrong, Mitt. I dare you.

2. There's going to be some serious fireworks of disagreement between Mitt and July Mitt and May Mitt and let's not even talk about the severity of dissonance with February Mitt.

3. Mitt will tell us 20 times how he's going to fix EVERYTHING, but he will never say how he actually plans on doing any of it.

4. Obama will do a lot of braying about his foreign policy successes, but sadly won't do enough calling out of Mitt's failures."

Jongs - "I think the current trends and numbers favor Romney to win, but I'm cautious to believe that..."

Niki - ""Will it turn out that etch-a-sketch can really win?" I'm fearful it might. Or that, if it's close, all the various voter-suppression techniques will win it for him. Talk about scared shitless..."

Niki - "We are in for bad times if Romney wins, far worse than we've seen yet. Ironically however, if he and the Repubs did nothing at all, we'd most likely continue on this slow road to recovery and the Repubs would get the credit. If, however, they put in place the policies they've SAID they would, we're in deep shit. And if Romney wins, I fear we can look forward to further involvement in Afghanistan, return to Iraq and another war...or two...or..."

From the Crystal Ball thread:

WishIMay - "I predict Obummer will win again, solely because the thumbs up thumbs down comment things are almost always in favor of him."

SignY - "I think Romney. Obama looks weak, and Romney is making a lot of promises."

1Kiki - "Given that the numbers are mixed/ close but the Romney side has fired-up intention and energy, I guess I'd go with Romney since they have a better chance of getting out the vote. I also wouldn't rule out voting machine shenanigans."

HK - "Obama wins. A lot of right wingers are fundamentalist Christians and as much as they may tell folk they're "for Romney," when they are alone in the voting booth they won't be able to bring themselves to vote for a satanic cultist. It'll be interesting because there should be a noticeable discrepancy between exit polls saying yea Romney and actual votes counted from folks who couldn't pull for the Mormon. This will fuel a lot of very nasty insinuations from the right and there will be protests and I am here predicting that there will be armed violence coming from the right after the election. I can't tell how bad it's gonna get in general, but in some quarters it's gonna get pretty bad. Not Zombie Apocalypse bad, but overturning cars and setting fires bad and some shootings. There's gonna be an uptick in violent crimes against black people... Obama wins decisively in the EC, and not so decisively if at all in the popular vote. "

Riona - "I predict Obama will win again"

Jo753 - "I predict Obama."

Kwico - "My take? Obama squeaks it out in the electoral college, taking Ohio and Wisconsin, while Romney edges Florida, Virginia, Iowa, and Colorado, but still comes up just shy of the 270 needed."

kpo - "The polls seem to have broke in Obama's favour now - at a good time. Obama to win the electoral college comfortably, and the national vote very slightly. Probably more low, dishonest, dirty tactics from the Romney campaign over the next few days."

Niall Ferguson (right-wing economist) predicts a november foreign policy 'surprise' from Obama - one-on-one talks with Iran, or giving Israel a green light to attack their nuclear facilities, and so on: "never underestimate the ruthlessness of the Chicago machine that has been the key to Barack Obama’s rise. With his fall suddenly a real possibility, the only thing that would really surprise me would be no October—or November—surprise."

Kevin Drum (Mother Jones): Niall Ferguson is 'soon to be irrelevant'.

David Frum - "we won't reform the congressional GOP by re-electing President Obama. If anything, an Obama re-election will not only aggravate the extremism of the congressional GOP, but also empower them: an Obama re-election raises the odds in favor of big sixth-year sweep for the congressional GOP - and very possibly a seventh-year impeachment."
(This from an article suggesting we should elect the GOP!)

Jeezus. People are weird. Politicians are even weirder.

I'm finally ready to make my prediction: Obama. I think the "October Surprise" of Sandy will do Romney in. And boy, it got here JUST in time--to make an "October surprise", not for the destruction happening in time to salvage the election for Obama, in case any of our righties were poised to jump on that. Everyone's been talking about an October Surprise for so longer I'm sure we're all sick of it, but who expected something like THIS?!

My fear, also, is that the GOP will go FURTHER right (gawd help us...and THEM!). On the other hand, if Romney won they'd have the power to take the whole COUNTRY further right...and in the opinion of many, all but destroy it! If Obama wins, all they can do is stop the country from healing faster. What a mess...

(Boy, Obama better hurry up if Ferguson's predictions are to come true...he's only got four DAYS to start talks with Iran or let Israel bomb them!)

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Good article. Frum is out of his mind. Worth clicking on the link to read the rest. But you missed some of the best From Frum. The title is a gas: "The GOP Will Destroy America If We Reelect Obama, So We Must Let the GOP Win" {?!?!?!}

But there are even more giggles in the article itself:
Quote:

First, he figures that Obamacare will survive no matter what, so he'd rather have a Republican in charge of implementing it. {????}

Frum also has a peculiarly hostile reading of Obama's Osawatomie speech from last year, which he thinks is an indication that Obama wants to vastly expand government employment.

That one's funny in and of itself, given the facts:

But then, that cry of "they'll make government BIGGER" is one we're all used to by now...

And I like the author's assessment of Frum's argument about the GOP:
Quote:

No country can survive with this attitude. If congressional Republicans are truly a destructive and irrational force in American politics—and God knows, I agree with Frum about that—the answer is to fight them, not to surrender to them. That way lies madness.
DAMNED straight!

ETA: KPO, please DO...it will be a gas to read, whatever the outcome.

Should be interesting Kwick. Next thing is to canvass predictions on what Obama re-election means for the country though.

Ezra Klein - "The nature of tonight's GOP loss - demographics turning decisively against them - seems certain to trigger an internal war."

Well, for starters, it means Romney's done. The GOP will be tearing itself asunder looking for ways to blame the entire loss on him, and blaming him for not being a "real" conservative.

CAVETROLL

Within days of the election we will see the stock market take a down turn as companies start cancelling new building, but will continue with maintenance. I'd say energy will take the biggest hit. Coal, oil and nuclear.

When social security came along corporations cut their pension benefits to their employees. Corporations will replace their health insurance benefits with the government ACA plan, cutting employee hours so they are less than "full time". This will be a double hit. Worse healthcare and less tax money into the government coffers.
