You are hyper-focused on Russia because the Biden* administration has screwed up everything that it touched for two years straight.

Consider yourself lucky, despite that double digit IQ of yours, that you somehow managed to be among those who are financially secure enough that you don't have to worry about the economy.

Meanwhile, the (legal) Mexicans and the blacks are voting for not-Democrat along with the rest of us who have two synapses firing.

Missed your answer on this one: And how could you possibly know how many bodies are under each cross?

Missed another one: why would Ukraine kill 440 of it's own people when 20 would have been enough to cry outrage?

You seem desperate to absolve an invading force, as if they wouldn't kill anyone.

ZIGNYM: "But when did this happen? Surely they can estimated when these people died - Did this happen when Russia took over Bucha. Or when they retreated a month later or some time in between? The article says "during" the Russian occupation which means the Russians shelled... themselves? (That makes no sense whatsoever)."

Look, dates and details and so much more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bucha_massacre

Right, it makes no sense. So your assumption must be wrong. You say you know how to read, so maybe you should read more than one article: google Bucha Massacre

ZIGGY: "And whatever happened to those bodies so carefully staged on a Bucha street? Were THEY killed by flechettes too? Or "executed", as Kiev claimed? The fact that they never seem to follow up on those "executions", or tell us WHEN the people they DID find were killed, or tell us that Kiev ALSO uses the same kind of artillery, shows that this is a carefully crafted story designed to lead the reader to infer that Russia was to blame without ever saying so."

There were many more than those 6-12? bodies on the streets. Those got a lot of press because of their brutal deaths and the casualness of where they were left.

From: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bucha_massacre

Satellite images
Russia claims that the bodies had been "staged" by the Ukrainian side after the withdrawal of Russian troops were contradicted by satellite images from mid-March that were provided by Maxar Technologies to The New York Times.[80] The images of Yablonska Street show at least 11 "dark objects of similar size to a human body" appearing between 9 and 11 March. They appeared in precisely the same positions as bodies later filmed by a local council member on 1 April, after Ukrainian forces had reclaimed the city.[32] Another video of the same street shows three bodies near bicycles and abandoned cars, which first appeared between 20 and 21 March according to satellite imagery. The Times concluded, on 4 April, that "many of the civilians were killed more than three weeks ago, when Russia's military was in control of the town" and that the images refute Russian claims of the contrary.[32] BBC News came to the same conclusion.[80]

The satellite images also showed the first signs of excavations for a mass grave in Bucha on 10 March. By 31 March, it had been expanded into an "approximately 45-foot-long [14 m] trench in the southwestern section of the area near the church".[81]

Video footage
Video footage from a drone verified by The New York Times showed two Russian armoured vehicles firing at a civilian walking with a bicycle. A separate video, filmed after Russian withdrawal, showed a dead person wearing civilian clothing matching the drone footage, lying next to a bicycle.[82]

On 19 May, The New York Times released videos showing Russian soldiers leading away a group of civilians, then forcing them to the ground. The dead bodies of the men were later recorded by a drone in the spot where the video was recorded and the bodies later found after Bucha's liberation. The videos clearly show the murdered men in Russian custody minutes before their execution and confirm eyewitness accounts. The troops responsible for the murders were Russian paratroopers.[83]

ZIGGY: "Because I don't know for sure. But I know how to read and when I see big holes in stories I can guess pretty well who is lying, and why."

I get that same feeling every time I read your posts.

CC: Didn't you suggest that Ukraine was bombing it's own Nuclear power station at one point?
ZIGGY: Yes, bc it's OCCUPIED BY RUSSIA.

You don't ever bomb your own nuclear power plant - you live there. It's in your own country. You're going to break something stretching so hard.

CC: And now you suggest they killed 440 of their own people? Why 440? Wouldn't 50 be enough to make the point? You are promoting a staggering amount of stupid.
ZIGGY: Well, they used human shields, didn't they?

What the fck would be the purpose of using your own people as shields when Russians are indiscriminately killing any/all Ukrainians they can?!?!? Fcksake, ZIGGY! You're so desperate trying to lie Russia's way out of this you make yourself look like a total fool.

6ix, the first line you wrote is false. And the second line. And the third.

6ix, Signym, Putin, Trump have taught the same lesson over and over: there is no such thing as truth for them. There are only clever words creating ideas in other people's heads. You can see that kind of person in the movie Emily the Criminal. From the first moments, Emily hasn't perfected smoothly lying (her error is mixing a little too much falsehood into mostly true sentences). Then Emily is accusing the job interviewer of being the liar and stupid because she won't get the job. At the end of the movie, Emily's lying has given her a certain amount of wealth and stability. Lying has done the same for Putin and Trump, so the movie is not lying about the advantages of being a smooth liar.

With her wealth, Emily is now the interviewer, not for an honest job but for a crooked organization she owns, and she is still smoothly lying to people because, for Emily (or Trump and his Trumptards or Putin and his Russians) there is no such thing as truth. There are only words creating ideas in other people's heads.

6ix, just as a reminder, your comment is one lie after another. You are not yet smooth. Tying this back to Putin, his comments about Ukraine from before this war started were one smooth lie after another. Who knows where this ends? Maybe like the movie did, Putin and Emily, smug and satisfied that some of their best-designed lies were believed and did give them certain advantages that could be deposited in a bank. And if a few Russians and Ukrainians die, what's the problem? A few people died in Emily the Criminal, and that wasn't Emily's fault, was it? She'd say it wasn't. "Believe me," both Emily and Trump say.

A cool, confident debut whose steady build mirrors the increasing stakes faced by its namesake, John Patton Ford’s Emily the Criminal is a nail-biter that makes the most of the tough side Aubrey Plaza has shown in even her most comic performances.

You are doing the same kind of bragging/lying as Putin was doing at the beginning of his war. Look at how much Ukrainian territory we have taken control away from Nazis! See how mighty we are! Trump did the same in 2020 and ever since he and his Trumptards have nonstop bragged and lied about 2020. If Putin and Russians weren't so criminal, they wouldn't need to lie so much to compensate for mediocre to poor battlefield performance. If Trump and his Trumptards weren't so criminal, they wouldn't brag and lie so much about their mediocre performance, either. I guess criminals have got to be like that to compensate for the qualities they lack which keep them from being successful as honest people are.

Experts predicted a stalemate in Ukraine, here’s why they keep getting it wrong

Opinion by Orysia Lutsevych

Ukraine’s recent stunning success in liberating a huge swathe of its territory from Russian occupation directly contradicted months of consensus opinion by commentators and experts who predicted that the war had settled into an indefinite stalemate. Public perception of the conflict, as well as important policy decisions, are swayed by such assumptions. At this stage we must ask: why do experts keep overestimating Russian strength and underestimating Ukraine’s military capabilities, and how can they avoid doing so again?

One obvious point is that western states have gradually increased supplies of powerful and sophisticated weapons, and Ukraine’s forces have convincingly demonstrated they can use them to powerful effect on the battlefield. But this is only part of the story.

By focusing on military hardware, experts often miss the “software” of war: the quality of leadership, morale and motivation, decision-making and governance and the engagement of society.

War is an expression of political culture on the battlefield. And there are stark differences between Ukrainian and Russian culture. Many in the west mistakenly thought Ukraine was just like Russia, but weaker, more corrupt and chaotic. In fact, while Ukraine is by no means perfect, it is more agile and decentralised, compared to the autocratic and rigid Russian state.

On paper, Russia’s military power is massive, with three times the forces, and a 10-fold higher military budget. It looked like Ukraine had no chance of withstanding a full-scale invasion. But it did. President Zelenskiy was extremely effective in stabilising the situation by demonstrating personal bravery, staying in the capital and delivering regular briefings. This wasn’t just a media exercise; his work in boosting morale and organising society around supporting the war effort in novel ways has been crucial to Ukraine’s success.

This societal mobilisation and cohesion have paid off throughout the conflict. The high morale of the Ukrainian armed forces reflects the general societal resolve to resist Russian aggression. Ukraine’s military budget is in effect much larger than the official state funding. Ukrainian citizens and the private sector work to support the army every day, and every company, family and city is providing additional support to soldiers on the battlefield. News outlets fundraise and buy drones for units where their journalists are serving. Agricultural companies send night vision goggles, used all-terrain vehicles, mobile showers, chocolate and much more to employees who have signed up to fight. Private companies of all sizes invest millions in upgrading Soviet equipment with modern microchips and electronics, add armour to vehicles, assemble drones and retune communication devices. Millions of these invisible threads connect soldiers to families and companies back home. They feel they are supported; they know there is a home front.

Moreover, many in the west have underestimated the basic intellectual and combat capacity of Ukraine’s forces. They have substantially improved after eight years of holding back the Russian incursion into Donbas. The strategic deception of drawing more Russian forces to Kherson while concealing the gathering counter-offensive in Kharkiv in the north would be seen as a huge success for any army. The commander-in-chief, General Valeriy Zaluzhny, is 49 years old and has combat experience in Donbas. Younger officers with promise are quickly promoted, and unit commanders are empowered to act independently and provide feedback. He is turning the army into an agile and modern network of truly collaborative units.

The societal crowdsourcing approach employed by Ukrainians has also seriously impeded Russian capacity to advance, occupy and gather intelligence. A new crowdsourcing intelligence tool allows Ukrainians to report Russian collaborators and saboteurs instantly and anonymously. Over 300,000 Ukrainians have used it. Various other IT solutions developed by civilians allow territorial defence units to protect information about checkpoints and sniper locations. It is a beehive of innovation.

The picture for Russia is quite the opposite: a rigid, hierarchical system, full of fear. Many in the west underestimated how little motivation there would be among Russians to fight and die for Putin’s imperial ambitions with no just cause. Russia is struggling to replenish its forces, turning to mercenary firms who have gone as far as recruiting prisoners (the Russian private military sector acts on orders from the Kremlin). War relies on accurate information about the enemy, and Putin is not getting it, because his subordinates are afraid to tell the truth.

Despite Russia pumping billions of roubles into modernisation, its armed forces remain unreformed at the command level, with corruption eating resources. To conceal massive embezzlement, official figures are often inflated. Tanks, artillery and armoured vehicles are only as good as the people operating them. And people are the last thing autocrats care about.

Finally, many were fooled by Russia’s menacing projection of the image of a great military power that can dominate any region with layers of missile power. Misconceptions about Russian military power are rampant. Ukraine’s successes in hitting Russian warships in the Black Sea and bases in Crimea demonstrate that Russia is vulnerable in ways few would have predicted.

Incredibly, many of these factors were obvious after the first few disastrous weeks of the Russian invasion. But it can take time to overturn long-held beliefs. We must not continue to make the same mistakes. Distinguishing myths and misconceptions about Russian and Ukrainian capacity from the real drivers of battlefield dynamics will be key to making sound policy and providing effective support for Ukraine. Indeed, it will be crucial for the outcome of the war.

Until Pearl Harbor, most Americans, except college educated white folk, didn't care how many millions Hitler killed. The GOP protected Hitler from evil President Roosevelt with his wasteful spending on the lend-lease program, which was a way of helping Hitler's enemies. The GOP still says FDR was a terrible President with wasteful government spending, a Commie, except Biden is even worse.

In the 1938 election, the GOP gained seats in Congress and Democrats lost the support of angry poor white trash, who were angry about blacks and foreigners, Jews in particular, fleeing from Hitler to America. The GOP gained 81 seats in Congress and gained 12 state governorships.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1938_United_States_elections

In the 1940 election, the GOP gained 4 more Senators and 2 more governorships. Angry poor white trash were very pleased with their continuing gains and hoped to end FDR's wasteful spending on foreign wars after the next election in 1942. Pearl Harbor temporarily slowed that GOP plan.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1940_United_States_elections

In 1942, the GOP gained 9 Senate seats and 47 House seats. Angry poor white trash hated WWII. FDR was losing the war! So much wasteful government spending and still the war wasn't over! Hitler was winning! If a Republican was President, the war would have already been won. FDR was an incompetent commander-in-chief. FDR allowed the Japanese to bomb Pearl Harbor, according to the GOP.

Ukrainian air defenses have shot down at least 55 Russian warplanes since the start of the war in late February, a U.S. general said Monday, saying the huge losses are a major reason Russian fighter planes and bombers have not played much of a role in the conflict.

Ukrainians took down those planes using older Russian-made air defenses, forcing the Russians to severely limit the sorties they flew near Ukrainian positions. The shootdown also cut Russian ground forces off from the kind of air support they would need to take and hold territory, Air Forces in Europe and Africa commander Gen. James Hecker told reporters at the annual Air Force Association conference.

That lack of protection from the sky has been one of the big surprises of the war, as most analysts expected Russia to quickly establish dominance over Ukraine’s airspace in the early days of the invasion. That failure allowed the Ukrainian air force to regroup and survive mostly intact. Hecker estimated that Ukraine retains about 80 percent of its air force, seven months into the war.

At the Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting at Ramstein Air Base in Germany this month, one of the “big asks” from the Ukrainians was more SA-10 and SA-11 air defense systems in order to fend off Russian drones and aircraft, Hecker said.

The U.S. doesn’t produce or use the missiles, so the onus is on European allies to supply them to Kyiv.

I find it completely unsurprising that 6ix is worried about his future and blames Democrats. I have seen this before in the 1960's. I'm 70 now and remember East Texans claiming FDR allowed Pearl Harbor to happen, and that nobody would have attacked America if Herbert Hoover had been President, and that Social Security was not a government program because it took your money before giving it back to you, that Nixon was the greatest wartime President ever, that Germany understood the Jewish threat, that General Robert E Lee was an excellent man. If the truth that Lee was a traitor to his country was mentioned, somebody would get hit. Those East Texans had children who voted for Trump twice and will vote for him again because he represents what they believe in. And if Ukraine is conquered by Russia, it is of no concern to them, but they will blame the Democrats as they blame Democrats for all their struggles, and those of their children, to remain in the middle class. According to those East Texans, America has been nearly destroyed by Socialism, Mexicans, and Jews who run the country behind the cover of the Democratic Party. Did you know the President of Ukraine is Jewish? That explains everything, at least according to the angry poor white trash in East Texas.

I'm sorry that you're butt-hurt bc you can't argue a point with facts or logic.

Kiev has been indiscrimtely shelling UKRAINIAN civilian centers for YEARS, killing thousands. Clearly, they don't mind killing SOME Ukrainians (ie Russian-speaking ones) or using SOME Ukrainians (Russian-speaking ones) as human shields (documented by Amnesty International). You've never accepted the fact that there is a political and cultural divide in Ukraine, and that Kiev sees SOME "Ukrianians" not as fellow citizens but as a subgroup that is to be ethnically cleansed.

The East Texans would agree that Pity would be no more (East Texans would no more live pitiful lives) if we did not make someone poor (if East Texans are not made poor by the Democratic Party and, especially, the Jews who are behind the Democratic Party). There is a version of that for Russians where the Jewish President of Ukraine is making Russian speakers poor who live inside the borders of Ukraine. Magnificent Putin came to the rescue of those Russian speakers, just as Magnificent Trump came to the rescue of East Texans.

What the fck would be the purpose of using your own people as shields when Russians are indiscriminately killing any/all Ukrainians they can?!?!? Fcksake, ZIGGY!

Do facts and logic say that those centers were in Bucha? Izyum? Kharkiv? No? Huh. So much for your facts.

Blame Kiev for massacring civilians. Yanni, like they've been doing all along I know that fact causes your mental gears to lock up, but that is reality. No matter how much smoke and metal shavings blow out of your ears.

Signym, you talk like a magician, but your illusion doesn't convince because all you have is talk. Where is the smoke? Where are the mirrors? Where is the trapdoor that Putin drops down underneath the stage so that he can reappear behind the audience to convince them he has a teleportation device? Putin, the best magician the Russians have, says "Presto chango!" and the meaning of the war in Ukraine is instantly inverted. When Putin speaks, the dead killed by Russians rise from the grave. But then they fall down dead, again, this time killed by Ukrainians. It is pure magic! "Believe me!" says Putin (or Trump) and their followers will believe. "Prest-O Change-O" is a word trick along with "Fake News", which Trump uses repetitively.

In a rare national address, Putin plans for Russia to annex as new Russian land occupied areas of southern and eastern Ukraine. Putin threatened nuclear retaliation if Kyiv continues its efforts to reclaim that land. Putin did not specify if he was nuking America, or not.

6ix, you don't know where Ukraine is, but Putin knows where you live and has your nuke.

Vowing that Russia would use all the means at its disposal to protect what it considers its territory, Putin accused the West of nuclear blackmail and warned: “I am not bluffing.” That was pure Putin magic: he threatens to nuke America and "Presto chango" it becomes America blackmail threatens to nuke Russia.

Opinion: Putin has just laid a land mine under his regime

by Andrei Kolesnikov, Updated 9:51 AM ET, Wed September 21, 2022

Editor’s note: Andrei Kolesnikov is a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He is the author of several books on the political and social history of Russia, including “Five Five-Year Liberal Reforms.” Origins of Russian Modernization and Egor Gaidar’s Legacy.”

In a televised national address Wednesday morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a partial mobilization. This means that he has essentially broken an unwritten social contract with Russians: we, the citizens, allow you, the authorities, to steal and fight, but in exchange you stay out of our private lives.

Beginning a new phase of the war, the cornered Putin is dragging a significant portion of Russians behind him. He has de facto declared war on the domestic front – not only on the opposition and civil society, but on the male population of Russia.

Why is Putin taking the risk? Because he himself has encouraged the lack of public attention to the war for several months. Mobilization is fraught with serious discontent in society. That is precisely why he decided to make a partial mobilization, rather than a full one. In the long run, he laid a mine under his regime; in the short run, he will face sabotage.

For so long, Putin fostered a disinclination among the masses for war, a disinclination that will now cost the Russians, who are being turned into cannon fodder.

How might Wednesday’s announcement take Russians out of their comfort zone – those who remained indifferent to the “special operation” in the current circumstances?

Until now at least, the main emotion (or rather, its absence) felt here was indifference. That indifference comes in different shades – genuine, imitative or self-cultivated.

The Russian who falls within the 30% who “rather” support the “special operation” (nearly 50% “definitely” support it, slightly less than 20% do not support it) has no opinion of his own, prefers to borrow it from the TV or from Putin, blocks out for himself the bad news and alternative sources of information. But he sometimes does not like the war itself, and a person in this 30% could potentially change his attitude toward Putin and his initiatives.

The indifference of ordinary people benefits Putin. We, the citizens, do not interfere in the affairs of our political class and support their initiatives, but in exchange we ask them to maintain an impression of normality.

Which is what Putin does, skillfully combining partial mobilization in support of the war and himself (which happened immediately after the invasion began) and demobilization. Entertainment programs are back on TV, fireworks went off on annual Moscow City Day festivities (an ironic joke of this day was that Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin celebrated the start of the Ukrainian counteroffensive), and people live their normal lives – interest in the events in Ukraine has been low throughout the summer.

But even those who were indifferent could not ignore the Ukrainian counterattack. Although here, too, a reluctance to know the truth prevailed: if the officials said that it was not a retreat, but a regrouping of troops, then that was the case. Yet even the official Kremlin talk shows were full of admissions of failure.

This did not provoke a desire for peace – which is also present in the mood even of those who generally support the operation – but caused an explosion of aggression and hate speech. There were calls to “take off the white gloves” and already really punish Ukraine. This is what Putin has done by launching missile strikes on infrastructure – power plants and hydroelectric facilities. This is revenge and anger, but anger that reveals weakness rather than strength.

The radicals are unhappy with Putin and demand a war to the bitter end and general mobilization. But the Kremlin dictator lacks the resources for a quick victory, including, above all, human resources (which is why he is beginning to recruit cannon fodder, even from convicts serving their sentences).

That said, it is not profitable for Putin to provoke the discontent of the middle classes, who are happy to watch the war from their sofa on TV, but are not about to go to the trenches. Moreover, general mobilization would divert the human capital needed for the economy – simply put, there would be hardly anyone to work.

Discontent with Putin on the part of radical hawks is not a new phenomenon. But nevertheless, it has not yet manifested itself so vividly. However, they have no chance of competing with Putin – the ultra-conservative radicals will be suppressed with the same energy as the pro-Western liberals: the dictator will not tolerate any competition in the niche of war and imperialism.

Public opinion in Russia is very inert, and something extraordinary will have to happen for the mood to change in earnest. The same is true of economic problems. Until now the social-economic crisis wasn’t so visible. The full-fledged beginning of it is being postponed, but, as some economists say, will probably manifest itself in late 2022/early 2023.

While public opinion is in a state of inertia, Putin has a chance to find words to pass off defeats as victories. He could stop the war right now by describing the losses as gains. And partly he did, when he decided to fix the losses by announcing the urgent holding of referendums in the four occupied territories of Ukraine on their accession to Russia.

It’s evident that Putin is not ready to stop what he started. He presumes that Russia will succeed on the battlefield. Or at least would gain a stronger foothold in the occupied territories, declaring them Russian, in which case any fighting in them would be assessed as an attack on Russia. And then he will have the opportunity to transfer the “special operation” into the official status of war and to create the possibility of general mobilization. Now Putin has announced only limited, “partial” mobilization.

And that could all be a mistake. The longer Putin delays ending the war – even given the already publicly expressed wariness of his main “friends” Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi – the harder it will be for him to make peace later on in terms that could be portrayed as victory.

Yes, public opinion is mentally prepared for a long war, but who knows when the fatigue of constant tension, which has to be relieved by carefully nurtured indifference, will break through and change the mood. Putin says he has time and the Russian army is in no hurry.

But as time passes, defeats will become increasingly difficult to present as victories – above all for the hesitating 30% who “rather” support him.

The Kremlin Must Be in Crisis

If an American president announced a major speech, booked the networks for 8 p.m., and then disappeared until the following morning, the analysis would be immediate and damning: chaos, disarray, indecision. The White House must be in crisis.

In the past 24 hours, this is exactly what happened in Moscow. The Russian president really did announce a major speech, alert state television, warn journalists, and then disappear without explanation. Although Vladimir Putin finally gave his speech to the nation this morning, the same conclusions have to apply: chaos, disarray, indecision. The Kremlin must be in crisis.

In part, the crisis stems from Putin’s fears that he will lose whatever counts as his international support. No ideology holds together the global autocrats’ club, and no sentiment does either. As long as they believed Russia really had the second largest army in the world, as long as Putin seemed destined to stay in power indefinitely, then the leaders of China, Belarus, and Kazakhstan, along with the strongmen running India and Turkey, were happy to tolerate his company.

But Putin’s supposedly inevitable military victory is in jeopardy. His army looks weak. Western sanctions make problems not just for him but his trading partners, and their tolerance is receding. At a summit in Uzbekistan last week, he was snubbed by a series of Central Asian leaders. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told him that “today’s era is not an era of war,” and Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his “concerns” as well. On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told PBS that he had urged Putin to end the war: “The lands which were invaded will be returned to Ukraine.” And those lands, he made clear, should include Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, following a sham referendum much like the ones it now plans to stage in other parts of occupied Ukraine.

But while losing support abroad is bad, losing support at home is worse, and there are some signs of that too. Putin might not care much about the Russian liberals and exiles who oppose the war, but he may worry (and should worry) about people who are supposed to be on his side.

“Mobilization is, let’s put it bluntly, our only chance to avoid a crushing defeat,” one of them recently wrote. No one has stopped or arrested these critics, perhaps because they have protectors high up inside the security services, or perhaps because they are connected to the heavily armed mercenaries who are now doing much of the important fighting in Ukraine. If their loyalty isn’t assured, then Putin isn’t secure either.

At the same time, the Russian president has to balance the discontent of that heavily armed minority against the wishes of the mostly apathetic, mostly silent majority. For the past six months, Putin has been telling the latter that there is no war, just a special military operation; that Russia has suffered no losses, just some temporary setbacks. Given that the army is victorious and everything is fine, most people need not alter their lives in any way. Now events have forced Putin to change his language, but it seems there are limits. Thus he speaks not of a true mass mobilization — which would involve conscripting young men in enormous numbers — but of partial mobilization: no students, no general call-up, just the activation of reservists with past military experience. Supposedly Russia has 300,000 such people, though it’s not clear how many of them are actually fit to fight or whether there are enough weapons and gear for them either.

Finally, and perhaps most important, the speech and a series of legal changes announced yesterday reflect a crisis inside the military. In truth, the Russian army faces not just a logistical emergency or some tactical problems but also a collapse in morale. That’s why Putin needs more soldiers, and that’s why, as in Stalin’s time, the Russian state has now defined “voluntary surrender” as a crime: Under a law approved by the Russian Parliament yesterday, you can be sent to prison for up to 10 years if you desert your guard post in Donetsk or Kherson (or change into civilian clothes and run away, as some Russian soldiers have done in the past few weeks). The state has also decreed new penalties for mutiny — “using violence against a superior” — and stealing while in uniform. If the Russian army were a reliable, enthusiastic, dedicated fighting force, then the state would not need to declare harsh punishments for deserters, looters, and mutineers. But it is not.

Over the next few days, the bogus referenda will gather headlines, and the nuclear threats will create fear, as they were designed to do. But we should understand these attempts at blackmail and intimidation as a part of the deeper story told by this delayed speech: Support for Putin is eroding — abroad, at home, and in the army. Everything else he says and does right now is nothing more than an attempt to halt that decline.

But keep talking about Russia when nobody cares.

Natural gas production companies were making money at this time last year. Now that natural gas prices are up, thanks to Putin, the production companies are making a killing and an election will not change that killing because politicians in America have zero control over prices. Most Trumptards don't know that because they don't have any control. Somehow inflation must be the fault of the Federal Reserve Bank interest rates. The Chair of the Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, announced today that he was increasing the rate by .75%. Most Trumptards don't know that Jerome Powell is a Republican appointed by Trump. Powell said today that there is not enough unemployment. He won't stop raising interest rates until he has forced more people out of work. Since Trumptards won't be reading what Powell said, they won't know it.
https://www.federalreserve.gov/mediacenter/files/FOMCpresconf20220921.
pdf

FOMC participants expect supply and demand conditions in the labor market to come into better balance over time, easing the upward pressure on wages and prices. The median projection in the SEP for the unemployment rate rises to 4.4 percent at the end of next year, one half percentage point higher than in the June projections. Over the next three years, the median unemployment rate runs above the median estimate of its longer-run normal level.

Sadly, when an American reads a paragraph such this one, most fail to comprehend its meaning.

Early on, the sudden invasion of Kharkov and the seige of Kiev was prolly meant to intimidate Kiev into negotiating. If you recall, embassies were bailing from Kiev in a panic and setting up in Lviv. And, apparently, Kiev and Moscow had some sort of negotiating breakthrough in Turkey in March, until BoJo set Z straight on Z's expected role: to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian. Then Kiev reneged on its proposals and negotiations ended.

The second phase seems to be where Moscow found its economic footing and appeared content to let the fight drag on, using mainly Donbas militia and the Wagner group to do the infantry fighting while they provided air and artillery support, intelligence and so forth, degrading Kiev's forces on a slow-moving front. There seemed to be many good reasons to continue that way: the west was (and still is) deteriorating economically and politically faster, and Kiev's casualty rate was multiples of Russia's.

So, if it's going swimmingly, why change?

Lots of possibilities, but one general possibility is that the collective west, rather than reversing policies that were leading to
1) the ultimate destruction of Kiev's forces, and
2) demilitarization of the collective west and
3) economic privation and political instability at home and
4) weakening of the petrodollar abroad and
4) greater Russian economic resilience at home and influence abroad

kept doubling down on failed policies. Perhaps the Russian leadership gave too much credit to western elite's rationality and, realizing their mistake, decided to finalize the operation before the collective west did anything irretrievable. There's a possibility that the USA has already sent long range missiles to Kiev, or would soon. This might be an attempt to preempt that.

***
So, what does this mean for the future?

Well, once the oblasts have their referenda and are formally accepted into Russia, that's the end of the SMO. Any attack on these territories will be consistent act of war.

The Donbas militias presumably folded into to Russian military will no longer be haring and hounding after militarily secondary targets.

The restrictions imposed by SMO designation will be lifted. The Russian military will no longer be confined to a supporting role.

Participation of western powers in attacking the Donbas will be considered an act of war against Russia itself. Russia will be justified in applying embargoes and counter sanctions against nations against which it is at war, and potentially striking military centers outside of Ukraine.

Of course, folding the Donbas into Russia doesn't obviate Russia's security problem with what's left of Ukraine, or with NATO either. It just moves the border problem westward. So I think to see the full power of the Russian military unleashed on western Ukraine.

Which brings me to an interesting question that I heard posed: How will we know it's The End for Kiev, assuming it comes?

Will it be a full surrender in Kiev, a la Berlin in 1945?

A military coup in Kiev?

The Z regime decamping to Poland where it sets up a(n irrelevant) "government in exile" while Russia sets up a puppet government in Kiev?

The Z regime decamping to their various villas and mansions outside of Ukraine, leaving the military or low level functionaries to set up an "interim" government?

Something else?

I know what Powell said, you dumb shit. I don't need leftist retards on fireflyfans to point that out to me. A) I read more Leftist fake news than I do anything else. B) I know far more about financials than you do.

Stop worrying about your "Trumptards". You've lost everyone else now too.

It's amazing how quickly their posts turn to Trumptrumptrump now, innit?

They know that "Slava Ukraini!" loses votes so they're trying to memory-hole it. But don't worry: they'll resurrect its ghost whenever they want to accuse "someone" of "something".

Russian Nukes Can Be Used To Defend Annexed Ukraine Regions, Kremlin Warns

Thursday, Sep 22, 2022 - 01:45 PM

Once again Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, has served the role of issuing more severe 'read between the lines' warnings and threats fresh off President Vladimir Putin's Wednesday speech announcing partial mobilization of national forces and which confirmed referendums of occupied portions of Ukraine to join the Russian Federation.

I get two things out of this:

It supports my idea that Russia is attempting to cut western escalation off at the knees, and...

Since the Kremlin has assigned an "attack dog" role to Medvedev, they're attempting to rehabilitate his reputation from being a westernized soy boy into a Russian nationalist, possibly with the view of setting him up as a contender for Russian leadership role

Russian flechettes? Mexican flechettes? Cites? Proof?

More importantly: The people in Bucha were killed in many ways and torture was a common part of the dead. I linked to the wiki article and suggested you search on the same. Did you? Too afraid to find out the truth? (I laugh) Or just well past caring, your mind is made up?

Typical hysterical woman.

What amazes me is how evil thinks it is good.

If your idea of a fun evening is staring into the deepest depths of the abyss of human evil, I have a movie recommendation for you! The Act of Killing is a documentary that features some of the butchers who slaughtered over a million people in Indonesia in the mid 1960s. Because the right wing death squads became the country’s government, these mass murderers were not brought to justice; they were rewarded. Fifty years later, the heads of death squads are elder statesmen of evil—celebrities of a sort, but celebrities everyone is clearly terrified of.

The Act of Killing asks these men to recreate their crimes as film sequences. They’re too vain and too stupid to understand that they’re really being asked to explain themselves, so they cast themselves as action heroes, but can’t always manage to maintain the facade as the self-reflection needed to make art forces them to reckon with what they’ve done.

I did an independent search for the investigative findings on Bucha, which I linked in a previous post. No mention of torture, even by vehemently anti-Russian The Guardian. That claim probably originated in Kiev. But then, Kiev lies a lot.

Nah... I leave that to you. You CLEARLY despise most of humanity and revel in unbridled greed and narcissism. Oh BTW, those right wing death squads? They were armed by the USA, bc they were " anti-Communist".

You see, we have no problems funding death squads in Indonesia...or Central America .. or funding ISIS in Syria... or Nazis in Ukraine... as long as they're against Russia.

The Trumptards imagine they are elevated individuals. The Trumptards I know go to church and support their football team, but the loftiest institutions they are associated with do not cancel out the common truths Trumptards try to hide about themselves. Trump lies and cheats on his taxes and Trumptards don't care because they'd do the same, if in the same position. Putin kills Ukrainians to steal their land and Russians don't care because Ukraine is Russian land, not the Ukrainians'.
