The Trumptards I know are anxious that their problems will kill them. Unlike them, I am not afraid of death or the people who are causing me problems. The result is that my problems don't overwhelm me. I mow them down. On the other hand, places like Ukraine and Russia are full of fearful people who won't brutally confront the problematic people in their lives. How do they compensate for being cowards? By drowning their fears in alcohol. Trumptards do the same. As for me, I only drink at Thanksgiving and Christmas, although I'm not Christian. Two bottles of beer per year is sufficient for me. Ukrainians, Russians and Trumptards would be better off limiting their drinking, but I don't expect any change for the better in their behavior.

Putin declares holy war on Western 'Satanism'

Russian President Vladimir Putin invoked Jesus, Satan, and transsexual bogeymen in a Kremlin ceremony for carving up Ukraine on Friday (30 September 2022).

Putin signed eagle-embossed, leather-bound tomes declaring four Ukrainian regions to be part of Russia, in rites observed in a palatial hall, filled with clapping VIPs, including patriarch Kirill, and soldiers in dress uniform.

The last time this happened, when Putin annexed Crimea in 2014, marked a dark hour for Europe's post-WW2 security order.

This time it's more dangerous because Russia isn't in full control of the new territories it has claimed, amid Kremlin threats to fight for them with nuclear weapons if need be.

Using startling rhetoric, Putin portrayed the annexation as a holy war against the West, which is helping Ukraine to defend itself.

"They [the West] are moving toward open satanism," he said in a speech broadcast to millions online.

Western elites were teaching "sexual deviation" to children who changed their gender, he said. "We're fighting for historical Russia, to protect our children and grandchildren from this experiment to change their souls," he added.

Putin invoked Jesus by name to bear witness to his "truth" and portrayed himself in messianic terms.

"I believe in the spiritual power of the Russian people and my spirit is its spirit, the suffering of the people is my suffering," he said.

"The destruction of the Western hegemony is irreversible," he added, as he neared the climax of his oration.

His mysticism stood in contrast to his justification for seizing Crimea, which he based on historical grounds.

Putin also blamed "Anglo-Saxons", referring to the UK and US, for blowing up two Russian gas pipelines to Germany this week — in a potential casus belli with Nato.

He jeered the European public for soaring food and energy prices due to his invasion. "You need food," Putin said. "You can't heat your apartments", he said.

The rest of his speech went along well-worn lines, accusing Western countries of imperialism, colonialism, hypocrisy, and historical sins such as the bombing of Hiroshima and Dresden in WW2.

Satanic phantasmagoria and sexual hate-speech are also familiar themes in Russian propaganda.

But while Putin is known for using foul-mouthed language, such as necrophilia jokes, at state events, his cocktail of sex, religion, and geopolitics on Friday was headier than ever.

For their part, EU leaders are preparing to impose new sanctions on Russia when they meet in Prague next week.

They aim to blacklist Russian ideologue Alexander Dugin, who speaks of the Ukraine war and Russian identity in equally toxic terms, along with 28 others.

They are to strike at Russia's oil, steel, and forestry industries.

The EU is also preparing to copy-paste its Crimea travel and business ban to the new Russia-annexed areas, as the war drags out.

"Russian travel documents issued in those regions [the four Ukrainian areas annexed by Russia on Friday] are not recognised by member states as well as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Lichtenstein for the purposes of issuing of a visa and of crossing the external borders," an internal EU document said, in a decision being prepared alongside the new Russia blacklists.

Ukraine said it was applying to join Nato in its riposte to Putin's move.

The Kremlin solemnities saw Russia's four puppet leaders in eastern Ukraine grip hands with Putin while chanting "Russia! Russia!" to a standing ovation.

Two of them wore Z-logo lapel badges — a symbol that has become synonymous with Russian atrocities committed in Ukraine over the past seven months.

The Crimea annexation, eight years ago, saw Armenia, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Nicaragua, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe back Putin at the UN, in a sign of what he might expect this time round.

Cuba, Nicaragua, and Syria also formally recognised Crimea as part of Russia, but Russia's bigger friends, such as China and Iran, never bound themselves to Putin's fancy.

The pattern first arose when he recognised the independence of two Russian puppet-regimes (Abkhazia and South Ossetia) in Georgia in 2008 and when Putin was joined by Nauru, Nicaragua, Syria, and Venezuela only on the world stage.

Why Russia's Recent Lack of Air Strikes Should Terrify Ukraine

Russia is likely stockpiling missiles to preserve them for winter attacks on Ukraine, according to British intelligence.

The U.K. Ministry of Defense (MOD) said in an intelligence update on Friday that Russian Air Force Long Range Aviation (LRA) aircraft have not conducted a strike against Ukraine for three weeks, since September 21.

That's despite Kyiv continuing with its grinding counteroffensive to reclaim the territories seized by Russian forces in the ongoing war. Ukraine's counteroffensive is now in its fifth month, with particularly heavy clashes taking place along the front lines in the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions.

"While such breaks have not been unusual, the last similar break in strikes occurred between 9 March and 28 April 2023, a period of 51 days," defense officials said.

The British MOD said that in that instance it was likely that LRA had almost depleted its stocks of capable AS-23 missile munitions following its winter campaign against Ukrainian critical national infrastructure.

Putin ramped up missile attacks on Ukraine's infrastructure last winter, causing residents to be disconnected from the electricity grid, with those in Kyiv, Odesa, and western Ukraine worst affected.

"This time, it is likely that Russian LRA are preserving existing stocks of AS-23 missiles as well as using this pause to increase useable stocks in anticipation of further heavy strikes against Ukraine over the winter," defense officials said.

The intelligence update noted that recently, Russia has focused its airstrikes against grain-related facilities across the south of Ukraine, using SHAHED one-way-attack uncrewed aerial vehicles.

"This included strikes against Ukrainian Danube River ports, which likely required a high level of accuracy due to the target's proximity to the Romanian border," it said, adding that Russia likely used its SHAHED one-way-attack uncrewed aerial vehicles on these targets because of their better accuracy over other types of air-launched missiles.

Newsweek reached out to Russia's Defense Ministry via email for comment.

Ahead of a possible winter blitz by Russia on Ukraine's critical infrastructure, Oleksiy Chernyshov, the head of Ukraine's state-owned energy giant Naftogaz, told Newsweek last month that Kyiv is "more prepared" than it was in 2022.

"We expect Russia to continue serious missile attacks and drone attacks on our energy and infrastructure objects," Chernyshov said. "Their task is to deprive Ukrainians of basic services in heating, gas supply, electricity supply and others, and to actually target their morale and emotions."

"Ukrainians are more prepared," Chernyshov said. "They are more protected. We have prepared certain protections for our assets: energy production, gas distribution, gas storage, oil storage, oil refineries."

"Russia is also prepared. Both sides are smarter after the previous winter. The Russians will prepare more sophisticated attacks...They are using more sophisticated methods, so the risk is high," he added.

Kinda slow to take in new info. Kiev has NOT been 'continuing its offensive'. It's been on defense for a week or two now, it's Russia that's on the offensive. (not BTW THE Big Offensive. Just smaller local ones.)

I noticed something interesting: in areas that have been properly prepared (eliminating artillery positions, drone operator positions, high vantage points, mines) Russian mechanized assaults are successful. Adiivka is an example. If, however, ALL defensive firepower isn't eliminated, then a column of armored vehicles will suffer the same fate as Ukrainian assault in 'Bradley Square' (so named for all of the dead Bradleys there). This happened to Russia further north, I forget the name of the village. In the Rabotyne area (near Bradley Square) the fighting involved mostly infantry, drones, and bombs. (Bombs are Russian.) Which leads to the truism: it's easier to defend than attack.

So I see Kiev finally took my advice: Go on the defensive. Make the Russians come to you.

Is Russia's Battlefield Shifting from Ukraine to the US Political System?

The US has invested something on the order of 2 percent of our defense budget to arm Ukraine (without putting a single American soldier in danger) and the result has been the destruction of more than 4,000 Russian tanks, 8,000 armored personnel carriers, several Russian warships, three elite Russian brigades, a major Russian air defense system, and just two weeks ago, Ukraine’s army commander claimed that Russia’s 72nd Motor Rifle Brigade, the 31st Air Assault Brigade, and the 83rd Air Assault Brigade were all “crushed” in the Bakhmut area fighting.

But while America is using Russia’s terrorist attacks on Ukraine as an opportunity to degrade the power and influence of Russia’s military, Putin is using social media and rightwing commentary to get Republican politicians on their side and thus kill off US aid to Ukraine. The war in Gaza is making it even easier, with Putin-aligned politicians like Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) tweeting: “Any funding for Ukraine should be redirected to Israel immediately.”

Russia's Likely Death Toll in Ukraine Revealed in Government Filing

Russia's proposed 2024 budget allocates funding to the families of 102,700 military personnel killed in Ukraine, giving insight into Moscow's likely death toll in Russian President Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine that began in February 2022.

The figures, which have not been independently verified by Newsweek, were reported on Thursday by independent Russian news outlet Mozhem Obyasnit, which analyzed Russia's federal budget draft for 2024 to 2026. The publication notes that in addition to one-time insurance payments for military personnel killed in Ukraine, relatives also receive monthly compensation of 21,922.12 rubles ($225) from the Social Fund of Russia.

For the 2024 budget, the government allocated 16.335 billion rubles ($168,335,278) to relatives of military personnel who were injured or died. Of this figure, 9.987 billion rubles ($102,917,932) is allocated for monthly payments to the relatives of soldiers who experienced trauma.

The remaining budget—5.798 billion rubles ($59,749,491)—is to be paid to the families of killed military personnel, with 550 million rubles ($5,667,854) set aside to repair homes, if the killed serviceman was previously the breadwinner of the family.

The remaining 5.248 billion rubles ($54,081,637) of the budget, divided by the government's monthly payment of 21,922.12 rubles ($225), is enough to pay the families of 239,300 killed military personnel, Mozhem Obyasnit reported, noting that the budget includes personnel killed in other conflicts as well as Ukraine.

According to the publication, the government's expenses more than doubled compared to 2022, and the difference of 2.250 billion rubles ($23,151,125.25), divided by the monthly payment, suggests Russia will need to pay the families of 102,700 military personnel killed in Putin's war in Ukraine.

"According to the authorities' forecasts, 100,000 Russian military personnel will die within two years of the [war]," Mozhem Obyasnit reported.

Newsweek has contacted Russia's Defense Ministry via email for comment.

Russia's death toll continues to rise amid Ukraine's grinding counteroffensive to recapture its occupied territories. According to figures released by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Friday, Moscow lost 1,030 soldiers over the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 285,920.

Estimates of casualty figures vary, with Kyiv's figures usually exceeding those of its Western allies.

Russia itself rarely releases figures on troop losses. In September 2022, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said 5,937 Russian troops had been killed in the war in Ukraine since late February 2022.

A joint investigation by BBC's Russian Service and independent Russian news outlet Mediazona on Friday has so far identified the names of 34,412 Russian military personnel who have died in the war in Ukraine. It states that actual number of losses is higher than the figures stated in the investigation.

Ukraine also avoids publishing casualty figures for its own forces. However, Western intelligence estimates suggest they are also substantial. In April, a leaked U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency assessment estimated that Kyiv had suffered 124,500 to 131,000 casualties, including 15,500 to 17,500 dead and 109,000 to 113,500 wounded.

Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed Ukraine’s losses are eight times higher than those of Russia during an interview with Chinese media, stating that Kyiv’s counteroffensive has been unsuccessful.

“Since June 4, it [Ukraine’s counteroffensive began] has been continuing. So far there are no results, there are only huge losses,” for Ukraine, Putin said in an interview with the China Media Group this weekend, according to comments published by Russian news agency Tass.

“The losses are simply huge — approximately one to eight as a ratio,” Putin said.

CNBC was unable to verify the claims and Ukraine has not commented, although it’s generally understood that both Russia and Ukraine exaggerate the losses they claim to have inflicted upon each other and death toll figures tend to be very inaccurate during times of war.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Russia tallies Ukrainian losses from Ukrainian radio intercepts. It doesn't include death due to distant missile strikes, or death that occurs later in hospital.

Instead of swallowing the crap that western press spews, I've been following details from various pro-Ukrainian and pro-Russian sources (I've already cited them) and that ratio is correct.

For example, adding up Ukrainian loses from Military Summary Channel comes out to about 700-1000/ day even as Ukraine has gone on the "defensive".

The BBC and Meduza last estimated Russian deaths at 50,000. Using the 8:1 ratio, that means Ukraine has suffered 400,000 dead. That calculation matches the tally so far.

FWIW Kiev has announced a total mobilization. And there is a rumor that Ukraine is going to launch one more offensive. Supposedly an amphibious attack across the Dneiper carried out by four elite brigades(?) if Marines.
