Signym, people such as yourself, 6ix, Trump, Putin, Trumptards in general, have a psychology where they are not to blame for their misfortunes. Essentially they don't believe in any version of karma. Past lives have consequences in this life? They don't believe it. What they did fifty years ago, twenty years ago, 1 year ago, yesterday? They can't see the connection to what will be happening to them in the future.

I've seen people claim to understand consequences, but when pointed toward particular instances such as getting thrown out of the house after cheating on their wife many times or being fired for a long series of screwing up at work or cancer from smoking, they blame the wife or the boss or tobacco, not themselves. Trumptards blame Democrats or the wealthy if you must know a general rule of psychology. Russians do the same, but they add NATO and Ukraine as the main causes of Russia's misfortunes. They never blame their threats to nuke the West for Russia's problems because Russians don't understand the consequences of their bad behavior. They don't even know good from bad on a multiple-choice test. Neither do Trumptards know, even the so-called "Christians". Only being electrically shocked immediately after giving the wrong answer will train them in the difference. Learn from reality? Where there is a time delay between "bad" and the unfortunate consequences? They will never learn.

Do you understand Russia? In Russia, the final outcome of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is roundly considered to be dependent on the outcome of the next presidential election. State media pundits are openly pining for the day when America focuses predominantly on its own issues, ceases to be a global driving force and becomes merely another “regional leader.”

What Putin’s marauding troops weren’t able to take by force is expected to be handed over by Trump or a Trump-adjacent candidate. Political commentator Sergey Strokan openly said that the outcome of the American presidential elections will ultimately determine how and when the war in Ukraine will end.

Despite delighting in Ramaswamy’s commentary, Strokan noted, “We just watched the debate. The most important thing is that all of it was overshadowed by the one who wasn’t there: ex-President Donald Trump!” Strokan alleged that consciously or subconsciously, Ramaswamy is copying Trump, down to his mannerisms. Calling the former president “America’s diagnosis,” Strokan argued that his approach to governing the country is here to stay and Ramaswamy is one of Trump’s pupils.

Host Evgeny Popov noted, “We should take a closer look at this Mr. Ramaswamy. The last time, we had installed President Trump for Americans, but our bet didn’t quite work out. Why not try again? Let’s give it another try and see how Ramaswamy will perform, in case Trump doesn’t manage to win the post of the President.”

The Pentagon confirmed that training for Ukrainians on operating F-16s would begin in Texas in September, with flight training expected to begin in October in Arizona.

The American decision to supply F-16 jets represented an about-turn. This is because the US and its Nato allies - who had earlier ruled out the move - had feared this would lead to further escalation with nuclear-armed Russia.

Vladimir Solovyov, a noted Russian television presenter and ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, proposed instituting a death penalty for those who criticize the country's policies, including its invasion of Ukraine.

"I believe that it is necessary to realize the level of danger," Solovyov said. "But we take traitors of the motherland and sentence them to two years, fine them, they record apologies. Their corpses are not hanging from, figuratively speaking, poles, they are not afraid to betray the motherland, they are not afraid to throw bottles at military commissariats, not afraid to supply data on the movement of our troops, not afraid to burn relay cabinets."

"They are not afraid. They don't see the inevitability of punishment and the dreaded sentences. They see no punishment...We allow scumbags to threaten anyone they want, and they are not sought out and punished by agencies outside our motherland. No one was brought in in a bag, no one was liquidated on the spot. Nothing was done."

"I believe that we should reject the moratorium on the death penalty and introduce articles allowing the execution of traitors and their accomplices, terrorists and their accomplices, sponsors, and financiers, including shooting deserters who abandoned the combat order and betrayed their comrades," Solovyov said. "Brutal discipline, personal responsibility of those making the decisions, iron will in carrying out the orders. A clear understanding of the consequences and the responsibility that comes with making decisions."

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who currently serves as deputy chairman of the Security Council of Russia, has also been among the prominent Putin allies to call for the return of the death penalty.

The moratorium on the practice that Solovyov referenced was enacted by Russia in 1996 as it was working to join the Council of Europe. Its membership was, however, terminated last year after the full scale invasion of Ukraine began.

Anne Applebaum: Putin 'Is Really Destroying Modern Russia'

Anne Applebaum is a U.S. Pulitzer-Prize winning author who has written several books on Russia and the Soviet Union, including Red Famine: Stalin’s War On Ukraine.

Applebaum: The rebellion led by [former Wagner mercenary chief Yevgeny] Prigozhin was an interesting indication that some part of the Russian security apparatus already feels the war isn't worth fighting. Prigozhin said -- right before he made his quixotic trip from Rostov then more than halfway to Moscow -- this war is being fought on false pretenses. It's a war for corruption. Russian oligarchs wanted it because they're greedy, and they wanted to steal Ukrainian companies and make money off of it. And that's not a war worth people dying for. So, if he said it, that means that others surely think it.

I don't think there's any question that Putin will be remembered as the man who really set out to destroy his own country. And apart from what he did to Ukraine, apart from what he did to Georgia, to Chechnya, to Syria, this is somebody who has worsened the living standards, and freedom, and culture of Russia itself. He doesn't seem to care about the well-being or prosperity of ordinary Russians. They're just cannon fodder to him.

He's not interested in, you know, Russian achievements in infrastructure or art or in literature and in anything else. He has impoverished Russians. And he's also brought back a form of dictatorship that I think most Russians had thought they'd left behind. Remember the Putin regime for the first decade that Putin was president had elements of freedom in it. It wasn’t a totalitarian state. There was no thought police, no thought control of the kind people had known from the Soviet era. He is now slowly bringing that back. So, this is a crushing not just of dissent but a crushing of all politics, all imagination, all culture, all activity, anything independent. What he's really doing is really destroying modern Russia. And I think that's what he'll be remembered for overall.

How Russia’s War in Ukraine Could ‘Collapse’

The odds still favor Russia, both by Moltkean logic and by virtue of Russia’s massive demographic, economic, and military preponderance over Ukraine. But combatants are human, and human beings are nothing if not fallible.

By James Holmes

https://www.19fortyfive.com/2023/08/how-russias-war-in-ukraine-could-c
ollapse
/

Key point from the author: “Russia doesn’t have the luxury of keeping its defensive lines short, unless it chooses to relinquish the ground behind them. And if Ukrainian forces can starve their opponent of firepower by interrupting its supplies, they could collapse the line altogether.”

Field Marshal Helmuth von Moltke the Elder, the military architect of German unification and one of history’s most famed soldiers, would instantly grasp the state of affairs in this summer of Ukrainian discontent. After Kiev and its Western backers hyped the prospects for the spring counteroffensive against Russia, the counteroffensive has posted fitful progress to date. Moltke would ascribe the disappointing results to the fact that the Ukrainian military confronts a foe waging the strongest form of warfare.

Strategic offense coupled with tactical defense.

Moltke lays out the logic succinctly: “The tactical defense is the stronger [form of war], the strategic offensive the more effective form—and the only one that leads to the goal.” In other words, the contender that seizes or occupies some object or parcel of territory, then defends it tactically, primes itself for strategic and ultimately political success. In colloquial terms: grab something and hold it, and dare your enemy to come and take it back while fighting at a daunting disadvantage. For the German sage, in short, waging offense through defense blazes a path to triumph.

Advantage: Russia. Last year the Russian Army went on the strategic offensive, seizing ground coveted by the leadership in Moscow. After a startling series of reverses in the east last fall the army spent months preparing dense, elaborate defenses-in-depth to make it difficult and costly if not impossible for Ukrainian forces to recover lost turf in Ukraine’s eastern and southern reaches. That’s the tactical-defense component of Russia’s scheme. Mission accomplished: this summer has seen a tough slog for Ukrainian warriors.

So would Moltke counsel despair for Ukraine? Does his logic mean the defender—the occupant of the contested real estate, in this case Russia—always wins?

Well, no. Little is fated amid the maelstrom of war. Pursuing Moltkean methods does bias the outcome in Russia’s favor, but in the annals of military history many defenders have been dispossessed of geographic space. Dislodging an entrenched defender simply takes some extra doing by a well-resourced, inventive, spirited attacker. Take an example close to home: the Southern Confederacy during the American Civil War. The Union wanted to not just vanquish the Confederacy but eradicate its political existence as an independent nation, much as Russia hoped to topple the Ukrainian political regime and install one subservient to Moscow.

That meant conquering the Southern foe and unseating its government.

The Confederates accomplished their strategically offensive goal by banding together to secede from the Union. Secession left them holding the disputed country from an interior position while Union forces ranged around the continental and maritime periphery. Southern generals proved shifty. They were adept at moving around the defensive perimeter on interior lines to counter Union offensives that were uncoordinated with one another in space or time. Only when meddlesome President Abraham Lincoln urged his generals to concentrate in time, striking around the Confederate periphery, in force, at the same time, did Union forces manage to punch through Confederate defenses.

Lincoln reasoned that Confederate field commanders could never blunt every one among a series of assaults that descended at different locations along the perimeter simultaneously. Union armies would score a breakthrough into the Confederate backfield somewhere along the line. And so it turned out, albeit not without years of grueling combat and hundreds of thousands of deaths. The Union Navy worked with the Army to wrest control of Southern rivers from the Confederacy, enabling U.S. forces to move around at will. Ultimately General George Tecumseh Sherman was able to march to the sea through Georgia, demolishing much of the South’s warmaking potential while disheartening the populace.

So all is not lost for Ukraine despite this summer’s disappointing results. Victory isn’t foreordained for the combatant that couples strategic offense with tactical defense. War isn’t that pat.

How do you overcome the advantages that go to the tactical defender? Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, the British chief of defense staff, describes Ukraine’s strategy as “starve, stretch, and strike.” Starve means lashing out at Russian logistics hubs and “lines of communication,” meaning transportation routes that convey ammunition and stores to occupied territories and troops manning the frontlines. Deprive people of what they need to live and fight and you enfeeble Russia’s grasp on Ukrainian land. Starvation tactics also give Ukraine an indirect way to get at occupied Crimea. If Ukrainian forces manage to advance far enough toward the Sea of Azov to the south, they will bring the supply line connecting Crimea with Russia under rocket artillery fire.

Sever that supply line and Russian commanders to the west will find themselves thrust onto the horns of a dilemma. They can choose between evacuating the peninsula and western Azov coast and preparing the army and civilian inhabitants for wintertime privation.

Stretch means taking advantage of Russia’s distended defensive lines. Moltke’s great predecessor, Carl von Clausewitz, warns caustically against what he calls “cordon warfare.” A cordon is a line, and a line is made up of infinitely many points in series. It’s hard to be stronger than the foe at infinitely many points on the battleground. Trying to hold all points along an extended line thins out the defenders while allowing the attackers to mass superior combat power somewhere along the frontier to break through. If forced into cordon warfare Clausewitz advises commanders to keep the lines short and provide ample fire support in case the enemy threatens to puncture the line. Russia doesn’t have the luxury of keeping its defensive lines short, unless it chooses to relinquish the ground behind them. And if Ukrainian forces can starve their opponent of firepower by interrupting its supplies, they could collapse the line altogether.

If the starve and stretch phases work, Ukraine will generate an opportunity to strike deep into Russian-hold territory. So is Ukraine poised for victory? It remains to be seen. The American Civil War suggests that the offense, no matter how savvy, still needs the weight of numbers and capability to crash through into the enemy backfield and win the war. The denouement of World War I, which has come up often in commentary on the Russo-Ukraine war, likewise shows that mass is imperative. It took American manpower arriving on the battlefield in 1918 to enable the Allies to prevail. Starve and stretch all you like, but you need manpower and firepower to make good on any tactical success.

The odds still favor Russia, both by Moltkean logic and by virtue of Russia’s massive demographic, economic, and military preponderance over Ukraine. But combatants are human, and human beings are nothing if not fallible. The strong have been known to squander their advantages, setting conditions for the weak to win. Past performance suggests that Russia could follow the same path to ignominy.

Now is no time to go wobbly.

Ukraine’s counteroffensive is making substantial progress. Russia knows this, even if the West doesn’t

Jan Kallberg writes:

The bleakness of the Western commentariat’s recent output is striking — Ukraine’s counteroffensive has made little progress, they say. Major US news outlets cite intelligence agencies opining that things are “grim” and that hopes are fading that Ukraine can reach its (supposed) objective of Melitopol, more than 50 miles away.

This is simply wrong. Intelligence analysts may look at the map of Southern Ukraine and see distances; military planners will apply the military math and see something very different. They know that to crush the Russian army and strangle the troops in frontline fortifications, they don’t need to advance 50 miles. 10 miles will do it.

Why? Because although it would be great if Ukrainian troops broke through to the shores of the Sea of Azov, they do not have to. Instead, they can achieve a significant operational outcome by bringing Russia’s ground line of communication (GLOC) under their guns.

On or around August 22, Ukraine’s troops liberated the village of Robotyne, some 90km (around 55 miles) from the Sea of Azov, a major accomplishment given the enormous efforts of the Russian invaders to fortify and hold it.

From here, the Ukrainians need to advance by a further 10–15 km (7–10 miles), in order to range their guns on Russia’s east-west transport routes that are critical to the ability of its army and armed forces to fight. If Ukraine can interdict these road and rail links, it’s very hard to see how the Russian army can continue to fight.

This will not be easy, but it’s reasonable to think it will happen. This will be achieved using its indirect capability — first the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS), whose reach is about 80km-90km, and later its 155 mm artillery with a range of over 40km. These are hugely more capable than Ukraine’s pre-war 152mm Soviet-style artillery that have a range of only 17–20 km.

Russia’s GLOC does not run along the sands of the Azov Sea’s shores but rather inland and, therefore, closer to Ukraine’s advances. The M14 highway running east-west, and largely parallel to the coastline, is about 7km–10km from the shore. Nearby is the broader logistics corridor where the Russians place supply and ammunition dumps, fuel storage, higher-echelon command posts, reserve units, and logistic railheads.

This logistics corridor becomes increasingly narrow for every inch the Ukrainians liberate. Once the Russian assets mentioned above are within Ukrainian MLRS reach, the Russian senior leadership will have an almost impossible choice to make — will they be able to sustain operations west of Melitopol when every aspect of their fighting effort is under fire?

As winter approaches, the logistic situation west of Melitopol is likely to get worse and worse. As occurred on the western bank of the River Dnieper last fall, even Vladimir Putin will be forced to acknowledge reality – he can fight on and risk mass troop surrenders, or pull back. Either way, the so-called land bridge from Russia to Crimea will be snapped.

So Russian commanders will not think they have 90km of space to play with behind their backs. Their only consolation is that the Ukrainians can’t place MLRS artillery at the forward edge of the battle area; these units are extremely valuable and must be used from safer positions 10km–15km behind the frontline.

The Delusional Belief in a Ukraine-Russia Peace Deal

Why We Should Not Bet on a Peaceful Russia

The idea that a deal with Moscow will bring peace to Ukraine is based on very flimsy assumptions.

By Alexander J. Motyl, a professor of political science at Rutgers University-Newark.

August 25, 2023, 10:46 AM

Both supporters and opponents of a negotiated agreement with Russia to end the war in Ukraine are making bets on the future. Proponents of a deal are betting that, while negotiations may not satisfy Ukraine’s aims to fully restore its territory, they will end the war and produce a genuine peace. Opponents of negotiations are betting that, while a deal with Moscow may put an end to the fighting temporarily, it will only induce Russia to resume its aggression in the near future.

Each side rests its bets on assumptions regarding the ongoing war. Supporters of negotiations believe that there is a stalemate and that a Ukrainian victory is impossible. Opponents of negotiations believe that there is no such stalemate and that a Ukrainian victory remains perfectly possible.

Which are the more realistic assumptions? And which is the safer bet? Let’s start by revisiting the assumptions that prevailed among Western policymakers and analysts before Russia launched its massive invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022. There were of course exceptions, but the dominant assumptions were, first, that Ukraine couldn’t possibly avoid defeat and, second, that a negotiated settlement was its only path to survival—likely in a truncated form and with vassal status vis-à-vis Russia.

Both assumptions proved to be wrong: the first one almost immediately and the second after the collapse of the Istanbul negotiations in early 2022, when Ukraine offered neutrality in exchange for security guarantees. Interestingly, and perhaps not coincidentally, these are the same assumptions that supporters of negotiations have today: Ukraine cannot win, and only a deal with Russia can end the war. This doesn’t automatically mean that these assumptions are as wrong today as they were in 2022, but if the same assumptions were so fundamentally wrong before, it should at least arouse some skepticism regarding their veracity today.

So, is there a stalemate with no chance of a Ukrainian victory—or is the opposite true? The answer to this question also rests on assumptions. On the one hand, the Ukrainian counteroffensive has failed to produce any spectacular breakthroughs so far—and if the only criterion for a stalemate is the lack of spectacular breakthroughs, then, yes, there is a stalemate. If, on the other hand, incremental gains and the progressive degradation of Russian artillery, supply lines, ammunition dumps, fuel storage sites, transportation infrastructure, and command and control centers also matter, then, no, there is no stalemate.

Was World War II stalemated after the Allies landed in Normandy or the Soviets stopped the Germans at Stalingrad, both of which were followed by weeks, if not months, without a further spectacular breakthrough? Or were the smaller advances and attritional battles that followed these two events testimonies to the fact that the situation was not stalemated and that Germany would be defeated?

Regardless of whether there is a stalemate or not, is it possible for the Ukrainians to win by grinding away and never achieving a spectacular breakthrough? Of course, but only provided that the collective West continues to supply Ukraine with the needed arms. In other words, the assumptions made by supporters of negotiations aren’t really about stalemate or victory, but reflect a view about the willingness or desirability of the West to continue supporting Ukraine. That is to say, it’s not the assumption of stalemate that necessarily implies a reduction of Western military engagement in favor of negotiations. It’s the other way around: The aim of reducing that engagement, for whatever reason, implies the desirability of invoking stalemate and the impossibility of Ukrainian victory. We’ve known that Ukraine can only prevail with Western assistance from day one of the current invasion.

So, which is the safer bet—that negotiations will produce peace or that they will only delay the next phase of Russia’s war? Here, we’re in the realm of prediction and speculation, and the best one can do is arrive at conclusions that are more plausible than their alternatives. Which is another way of saying that one shouldn’t believe anyone’s proposals blindly. Every prognosis, no matter who makes it, has to be taken with a grain of salt.

For a plausibility check on whether a negotiated settlement could produce a durable peace—in short, whether Russia will abide by a deal—we can look at history, compare to similar situations, and invoke international relations theory. The question always comes back to Russia, as no serious analyst or policymaker would expect Ukraine to reignite the war after its negotiated conclusion.

Russian history is sobering. To this day, it is one of almost relentless expansion. Beginning in the 15th century, the Duchy of Moscow (which later called itself Russia) progressively seized territory in all directions to become, and remain, the world’s largest country. That expansionist drive hasn’t subsided since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, which Russian President Vladimir Putin explicitly views as a temporary setback. Belarus has been brought almost entirely under the Kremlin’s control, parts of Georgia and Moldova have been re-occupied, and Ukraine is once again the target of Russia’s sustained imperialist project. The past does not necessarily predict the future, but countries have foreign-policy traditions and dynamics that should not be ignored.

The history of other great powers and former empires is also instructive. During its own relentless expansion, the United States consistently violated the treaties it signed with Native Americans. Wilhelmine Germany ran roughshod over its guarantee of Belgian neutrality. Nazi Germany ignored the 1938 Munich Agreement, which British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain had hailed as ensuring “peace for our time.” The history books are full of treaties that were only temporary breaks between wars. In a word, great powers, regardless of regime type, are cavalier about the agreements and the treaties that encumber them.

The second plausibility check involves Moscow’s behavior in similar situations—that is, does the Kremlin have a record of abiding by agreements with Ukraine? Russia has twice guaranteed the sanctity of Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders, including Crimea—once in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum and a second time in the 1997 Ukraine-Russia friendship treaty. It is now clear that Putin never intended to abide by the Minsk agreements that were supposed to bring peace after the first Russian-Ukrainian war in 2014. The details are as murky as any information coming out of Russia these days, but if Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was indeed executed this week, it would also demonstrate Putin’s approach to negotiated agreements. He struck a deal with Prigozhin when the regime was weak, waited for an opportune moment, and then reneged on the deal to exact his revenge.

Finally, we can look at international relations theory—or, more precisely, several competing theories. Realist theory, which focuses on the balance between the major powers and their assumed spheres of influence, concludes that Ukraine naturally belongs in Russia’s orbit and doesn’t stand a chance against its mightier neighbor. Provided, of course, that the West stops its aid. Unsurprisingly, realist commentators, who range from scholars such as John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt to television personalities such as Tucker Carlson, are at the forefront of those arguing for the West to arrange itself with Russia, reduce or abolish arms deliveries, and press Ukraine to cede occupied land. In their view, a ceasefire and rump state is the best deal Ukraine can get.

But realism isn’t the only game in town. Many scholars argue that foreign policy isn’t just determined by a state’s geopolitical position, but that domestic politics and ideologies also matter—perhaps more so. From this point of view, foreign policy isn’t just, or even, a product of a state’s position in the hierarchy of power, but of regime ideology and a population’s or elite’s sense of national mission. These belief systems are exemplified by the United States’ Manifest Destiny, Britain’s colonial ideology of White Man’s Burden, France’s mission civilisatrice, Wilhelmine Germany’s self-image as Weltmacht, Nazi Germany’s grab for Lebensraum, the Soviet theory of global communist revolt, and so on—all the way back to Rome’s conception of Pax Romana. Here, too, contemporary Russia fits the bill with Putin’s idea of a Russian world that extends well beyond his country’s borders and the persistent Russian cultural belief that their nation is unique, superior, and ordained to rule over a periphery of non-Russians.

Other scholars argue that modern Russia’s expansionist drive comes from the way the former Soviet empire suddenly and comprehensively collapsed in 1991. Unlike the British and French empires, where the progressive loss of territory gave the imperial center time to adjust to being non-imperial, empires that collapsed in one fell swoop often retained the imperial ideology as well as many of the former empire’s important institutional and structural ties. The sudden collapse of the German Empire in 1918 is very instructive here: An unbroken imperial ideology mixed with resentment over lost status and territories was the toxic political and cultural cocktail that fueled the Nazis’ hyper-imperialist war. Seen against precedents of imperial dissolution, there is no reason to expect today’s Russia to abandon re-imperialization after a negotiated settlement with Ukraine, even if Russia is rewarded with some of Ukraine’s territory.

Those calling for an immediate negotiated settlement are thus making an extremely risky bet. History, comparison, and much of theory isn’t on their side. Effectively, they are advising Ukraine to put its survival on the line—in exchange for the flimsy hope that Russia will behave exactly as one tiny set of academics expect it to, according to their theory. That doesn’t guarantee that they are wrong, but the overwhelming evidence from historical precedent, regime behavior, national ideology, and international relations theory suggests that no durable negotiated peace is on offer.

In the final analysis, countries are dependent on their own historical experiences, not theoretical ruminations. Russia’s neighbors generally fear and mistrust Russia, with good cause. Ukraine, in particular, has every reason in the world to be skeptical about Russian intentions and promises of peacefulness. Policymakers and analysts in the West may want to ask themselves whether they’d be as willing to give Moscow the benefit of a doubt if Russia were their own neighbor, occupier, and historical overlord—and if their bets on the future concerned their very own existence.

Russians Are Strangely Stumped About Why Moscow Is Getting Bombed

File under CLUELESS Russians

https://www.thedailybeast.com/russians-are-strangely-stumped-about-why
-moscow-is-getting-attacked-with-drones

Some residents near the Russian capital have taken to social media to vent about the inconvenience of being woken up in the middle of the night, question why the “international community” isn’t coming to their rescue, and blame Ukrainian “terrorists” for targeting civilian areas. (Never mind that Moscow has repeatedly attacked residential areas in Ukraine with Iranian-made Shahed drones.)

No injuries have been reported in the recent string of attacks, and Russian officials claim to have shot down most of the drones that they say caused only “minor damage” to a building in Moscow City and several broken windows elsewhere.

While Russian officials have squarely blamed “Ukrainian neo-Nazis” for what they describe as terrorist attacks on Moscow, experts have said at least some of the drone strikes are more likely to have originated from Russian territory—otherwise the drones would be flying hundreds of miles across Russian territory.

Sergei, a resident of the Moscow region who spoke to The Daily Beast on the condition of anonymity, said he and his colleagues at work had become skeptical of the drone attacks precisely because of the distance the drones would have to travel unimpeded.

“We have a theory that these drone attacks are done by our government in order to justify a new mobilization,” he said.

Conquistadors from Spain stole the land from the natives. Then the descendants of the Conquistadors, Spaniards born in North America, rather than in Spain, stole the land from Spain. Then Antonio López de Santa Anna stole the land from everybody. Then Santa Anna went to war against slave-owners who invaded his land. Santa Anna lost to those slavery loving Texans. Things start getting really complicated. The Texans, who had their very own country called, not very original, Texas. Then Texas joined the USA. The USA lost the land to the Confederacy. The Confederacy lost the land to the United States of America. Maybe the USA should not have accepted Texas for a second time as a state, but should have returned the land to the natives. But that didn't happen because a slave-owning President by the name of Andrew Johnson replaced Lincoln. The slave-owners, who no longer could legally own slaves, stole the land back again despite being forbidden by the 14th Amendment from being elected to political office in Washington D.C. and Austin, Texas and all the counties within Texas.

The Confederates lost the Civil War, but that didn't actually change their behavior toward slaves because the Confederates weren't executed for enslaving people. The slave-owners kept as much of the old slavery system as the Federal government would allow. Sadly, the government pretty much allowed everything to continue as before. If you lived in Texas, you'd know that (in the present day) Trumptards treat people like they are still slaves but deny that is what they do. That makes white people who are horrible Trumptards feel good about themselves but descendants of slaves know it is all a lie because they still get abused by the Trumptards. A similar situation but with much more murdering than in Texas happened in Ukraine.

Russia killed millions of Ukrainians, treated the survivors like slaves and, today, Russia denies its entire past history with Ukraine. The Russians weren't executed for what they did to Ukrainians, so why would the Russians not restart the old ways of treating Ukrainians? What is the big difference between today and the past? What would make Russians stop murdering Ukrainians and enslaving the survivors? Easy question to answer.

The EU, the UK, the USA are sending ammo to Ukrainians while in the past the Russians were free to murder Ukrainians because nobody sent ammo. It is completely consistent that Trumptards want to stop shipments of ammo to Ukraine. Trumptards would side with Russians against the Ukrainians because Trumptards treats everybody who is not Trumptard the same as Russians treat Ukrainians.

Identifying attacks in the Russia–Ukraine conflict using seismic array data

Abstract

Seismometers are generally used by the research community to study local or distant earthquakes, but seismograms also contain critical observations from regional and global explosions, which can be used to better understand conflicts and identify potential breaches of international law. Although seismic, infrasound and hydroacoustic technology is used by the International Monitoring System4 to monitor nuclear explosions as part of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, the detection and location of lower-yield military attacks requires a network of sensors much closer to the source of the explosions. Obtaining comprehensive and objective data that can be used to effectively monitor an active conflict zone therefore remains a substantial challenge. Here we show how seismic waves generated by explosions in northern Ukraine and recorded by a local network of seismometers can be used to automatically identify individual attacks in close to real time, providing an unprecedented view of an active conflict zone. Between February and November 2022, we observed more than 1,200 explosions from the Kyiv, Zhytomyr and Chernihiv provinces, providing accurate origin times, locations and magnitudes. We identify a range of seismoacoustic signals associated with various types of military attack, with the resulting catalogue of explosions far exceeding the number of publicly reported attacks. Our results demonstrate that seismic data can be an effective tool for objective monitoring of a continuing conflict, providing invaluable information about potential breaches of international law.

Main

Although media reports show the devastation associated with the war in Ukraine, obtaining a comprehensive and unbiased overview of the continuing military attacks is a substantial challenge. Social media posts and traditional media outlets all have the potential to be subjective and are, in fact, often subject to manipulation for the purpose of misinformation and propaganda. Having a more complete and objective picture showing exactly where and when attacks are taking place is vital for developing a clear understanding of the scale of a conflict, how it is progressing and identifying potential breaches of international law.

Methods of conflict monitoring

Satellite imagery has been shown to be an effective means of providing high-resolution pictures of military attacks in Ukraine. Such data are now accessible to members of the public and help to support the emerging open-source intelligence community. However, although open satellite images can provide high spatial resolution, previous knowledge is required for the time and location of the imagery. Providing comprehensive coverage across a large region in real time is beyond the capability of this technology and it thus suffers from the incompleteness that plagues traditional reporting.

Yet, satellite images are not the only source of objective conflict data. The seismic and sound waves that are generated by an explosion can propagate over hundreds of kilometres, at velocities of up to approximately 8 km s-1 in the ground and approximately 0.34 km s-1 in the air. These signals can be recorded by seismometers and microbarometers at high sampling rates (typically between 40 and 200 Hz), which can help monitor a conflict in real time.

EU to consider proposals to speed up delivery of artillery shells to Ukraine

Wed, August 30, 2023 at 4:14 PM CDT·1 min read

Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has expressed readiness to discuss options to speed up the supply of artillery shells to Ukraine in accordance with the EU plan.

Details: The EU's top diplomat previously noted that member states have jointly delivered around 224,000 artillery shells and about 2,300 missiles from their stockpiles, while work on the other tracks - contracts with private businesses and the expansion of domestic production - continues.

Asked whether he was concerned about the slow progress in supplying artillery shells to Ukraine, Borrell said the EU would consider Slovakia's proposal to modernise outdated shells.

"If member states are unable to provide more from their stockpiles, this is only an incentive for them to increase production capacity and do so faster and better. Más y más rápido (more and faster)," he said.

Previously: In March, the Council of the European Union approved a three-track plan to supply Ukraine with one million artillery shells: (1) supplying from its own stockpiles; (2) signing contracts with private companies; and (3) ramping up its own production.

The two-billion-euro plan provides for the supply of one million rounds of ammunition to Ukraine within 12 months.

As part of the third track, the Ammunition Support Act Production (ASAP) Regulation, developed in the European Union to increase the production of ammunition and missiles, came into force in July.

The USA spent more than $10 trillion on nukes to dissuade Russia from actually nuking the USA. The USA will spend many trillions more in the future unless somebody, Ukraine for example, beats some sense into Russia.

Maybe we should put it to a vote then and anybody who says they are panicked about Russia's empty threats can pay the taxes then. There has not been one single second of my entire life where the fear of a nuke coming our way from Russia has been a thing that exists.

"The USA" isn't spending that money on account of Russia. The crooked politicians who all get rich once they get into office are siphoning off money from the American People and pocketing some of it while enriching the ever-growing war-machine.

And none of them give a single fuck about Ukraine or the Ukrainians either.

I might not give a shit about them, but I don't want to see them die, nor am I making a huge profit off of sending 2 generations of Ukrainian men marching toward their deaths.

You two morons really need to think long and hard about who the real bad guys are here.

And none of them give a single fuck about Ukraine or the Ukrainians either.

I might not give a shit about them, but I don't want to see them die, nor am I making a huge profit off of sending 2 generations of Ukrainian men marching toward their deaths.

6ixStringJack, it must be a constant buzz/thrill for you to know you are overflowing with courage and goodness. Meanwhile, Ukrainians know that Russians killed 4 million of them when they passively resisted. The next Russian killing spree will have even larger Ukrainian death tolls. How can that be predicted? Because Russians killed 64 million Russians over merely political differences so the Russians will kill all the Ukrainians this time, since Ukrainians are violently resisting. That is why Ukrainians fight back.

Why does Russia still deny the Holodomor?

6ix, Russia murdered millions of Ukrainians in the past. Russia is murdering more, today. Russia threatens to murder Americans with nukes because America sends ammo to Ukraine to fight back against the murderous Russians. 6ix, the villains in the Ukrainian War are Russians. You have not figured that out, have you? How you do anything, 6ix, is how you, 6ix, do everything and you, 6ix, can't even understand that there is only one set of villains, the Russians.

Russian Propagandist Says Tucker Carlson Is a ‘Dead Man Walking’

“If I were in his place, I would tell no one of my travel routes,” Russia’s most prominent propagandist, Vladimir Solovyov, warned the former Fox News host.

Julia Davis, Updated Sep. 01, 2023 7:01AM EDT

On Thursday, Russia’s most prominent propagandist, Vladimir Solovyov, pompously predicted that soon there might be another potential victim: former Fox News host and podcaster Tucker Carlson. The latest broadcast of The Evening With Vladimir Solovyov featured multiple clips of Carlson’s predictions, including his claim that the U.S. government is getting ready to go to war with Russia — a war he implied the U.S. would lose.

In a series of clips selected for Solovyov’s program, Carlson accused both Congressional Republicans and Democrats of being “insane” and hysterical, predicting that a war between the U.S. and Russia would start next year.

Solovyov theatrically asked, “Who says that? A dead man walking! He sincerely believes that the next step after the accusations and the declaration of impeachment will be an assassination of Trump. But this man, who is currently the most popular English-speaking journalist, signed his own death warrant!”

During his evening show, Solovyov predicted dire consequences that would follow Carlson’s persistent attempts to score a sit-down with the Russian president: “I can’t rule out that in the near future, as he is leaving Europe, there will either be an air crash or something will happen to the car in which he will be traveling, or he might eat something that he shouldn’t, maybe his heart will suddenly stop! If I were in his place, I would tell no one of my travel routes.”

The warnings sounded like something that might have been useful to someone like Prigozhin or numerous people who found themselves on the wrong side of Putin and ended up paying the ultimate price. Perhaps they were also useful in attempting to persuade the domestic audiences that Russia is not the only place in turmoil and political assassinations are quite common all over the globe.

Ratcheting up the conspiratorial mood permeating the studio, Solovyov expressly agreed with Carlson’s outlandish predictions of the impending Armageddon. He pontificated, “We are on the verge of a global hot war! It’s unavoidable because it benefits everyone!”

He dramatically added, “These are the end times! We should realize this.”

No. I don't watch Tucker Carlson. I didn't even watch his interview with Trump on the first GOP Debate night.

It was the USA that developed the atom bomb first, the USA (and only the USA) that used the atom bomb first- twice(!), developed the hydrogen bomb first, and the USA that has pulled out of most nuclear arms treaties with Russia.

Everything that USSR/Russia has done since WWII is a RESPONSE to everything we've done.

The person who's paranoid is you. If we stopped attacking Russia, they could stop defending themselves. Altho, by now, they know our permanent state is crazy and dishonest (yanno, like you) and is dedicated to their destruction, so at this point they have no interest in talking to anyone in DC: Democrat, Republican, elected official, permanent staff, security or military ... pretty much a bag of nuts and morons.

BTW SIX: Russia's threats AREN'T empty. But their threats are also measured. They have not committed to "no first use". Nuclear weapons are on the table, but also a last reort.
Given that our administrations are mostly nuts, incompetent, or corrupt (or all three!) from the top down through the first four or five layers, I don't know if they have a rational thought in their heads. I wouldn't count on sane policies from most of them.

They're virtually empty. I'm still not afraid of this scenario playing out in the slightest. Even with the Joe Biden* puppet show we're currently enduring, and even with Obama pulling UN/NATO strings.

Russia's powerful enough to keep it escalating to the Last Resort. They're not wack-job jihadists over there. They know if they launch the nukes that's the end of the world as we know it.

Russia doesn't bluff, SIX. They do pretty much what they say they'll do. They fulfill their contracts, meet their treaty obligations, and stand by their promises. They've been harping on NATO's eastward expansion since at least 2007, and have said over and over that Ukraine in NATO is a red line. The problem is, we (the collective west) don't take them seriously. We bought our own bullshit about Russia being a gas station masquerading as a country and thought we could break every promise and diddle them along with "talks" and "agreements" designed to buy time to arm Ukraine. Russia WILL use nukes if they think it's necessary.

Fortunately for us, they have conventional "escalatory dominance" (per Obama) so as long as we stick to conventional weapons they probably will too.

PS: They have nuclear escalatory dominance, too. But TPTB here don't know that either, and that's what makes them dangerous.

Edited to add: At one time Russia even asked to be a NATO member. They were willing to work with the west. It was our policies that turned them into an implacable enemy. At this point I don't know if we can retrace our steps.

What happened after WWII? Russia killed two million German civilians who were forced out of areas Russia controlled and sent to East Germany. Russia denies killing any Germans. Meanwhile, the USA killed none and West Germany prospered under the USA, UK and French. East Germany did not prosper.

After WWII, Russia killed ten million political prisoners. Russia denies killing any prisoners. This is years after the Purges of the 1930s. Meanwhile, the USA killed none except for some Branch Davidians who felt their gun-ownership and religious rights were not being respected by the USA.

After WWII, Russia set North Korea up. That little country is a killing machine of its own citizens. Tens of millions of North Koreans died and the remainder live in poverty. North Korea denies killing anybody, the same false denials that come regularly out of Russia. Meanwhile, the USA set South Korea into motion where Koreans have prospered and grown rich selling cars, washing machines, and TVs to the USA.

You already know how North Korea followed Russia's example of threatening to nuke the neighborhood of Japan, South Korea and the USA. It is impossible to believe North Korean claims that it built H-bombs to bring peace which the USA would ruin if North Korea had no H-bomb. Russia makes exactly the same claims about its peaceful H-bombs bringing love and prosperity to the world.

Signym's "sources": . . . took in millions of German prisoners in the summer of 1945 and deliberately starved as many as one in four of them to death, according to the highest estimates.

In contrast, the Wiki writes: 1,000,000 ~ 1,900,000 prisoners
3,000 ~ 6,000 deaths

Signym, you are doing a But-What-About propaganda attack, a technique perfected by Russians and used extensively by Trumptards.

Not all bluffs are on a 2-7 offsuit hand. I'm not saying that Russia CAN'T make good on that bluff if they felt it was necessary. They obviously have a much stronger hand than a 2-7 offsuit. But it's still a bluff. They're not looking to destroy the world any more than anyone pulling the strings here are. The people running our country want to rule the world, but none of them want to run a bombed out radioactive waste of a world.

That would be some end-of-times shit, and quite frankly, we're not even close to being there yet. Russia is just as likely as the US to escalate to nuclear weapons, which is to say it's about as likely as winning a Billion Dollar Powerball.

Russia did this yesterday: A strategic next-generation missile that Russian President Vladimir Putin once described as “invincible” has been deployed for combat duty, the head of state space agency Roscosmos said Friday.

Since Russia killed 64 million Russians over political differences, I'm sure there will some day be a Russian Czar who would kill 64 million Americans over political differences. That Czar might be named Putin.

And SECOND says
Quote:

Meanwhile, the USA killed none
which, even according to Wikipedia, is wrong, wrong, wrong.

Wikipedia also says

Quote:

"Other Losses" is a 1989 book by Canadian writer James Bacque, which makes the claim that U.S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower intentionally caused the deaths by starvation or exposure of around a million German prisoners of war held in Western internment camps after the Second World War. "Other Losses" charges that hundreds of thousands of German prisoners that had fled the Eastern front were designated as "Disarmed Enemy Forces" [not POW] in order to avoid recognition under the Geneva Convention (1929), for the purpose of carrying out their deaths through disease or slow starvation. "Other Losses" cites documents in the U.S. National Archives and interviews with people who stated they witnessed the events. The book claims that a "method of genocide" was present in the banning of Red Cross inspectors, the returning of food aid, soldier ration policy, and policy regarding shelter

Oh, and to call names (your go-to dodge) and claim "whataboutism" (one of your other favorite dodges).

SIX: Yanno... Most of my life, Russia hasn't been an enemy other than an adversary in Olympic Hockey and Gymnastics. Most of this begins and ends with the Clintons and whoever has been pulling their strings.

SECOND: Russia did this yesterday: A strategic next-generation missile that Russian President Vladimir Putin once described as “invincible” has been deployed for combat duty, the head of state space agency Roscosmos said Friday.

And what's your answer to this, SECOND? Run another regime change operation on Russia's border? Place nuclear missiles within 5 minutes of Moscow? Threaten and bluster some more, and back out of the last remaining nuclear treaty? Stomp all over Russia's CLEARLY STATED RED LINES?

Oh, yeah. THAT'LL show them!

*Well, if there are rational PTB they can step in any time now! Because their meat puppets, Biden*, Bliken, Nuland, and Sullivan, and the rest of the deep deep state have gone rogue, and I don't know if the masters of the universe (as they think of themselves) can put the genie back in the bottle. Yanno, things have gone haywire for well-established empires before. How will TPTB react when they see everything crumbling around them?

Were there ever rational PTB?

I don't believe that the real PTB today are any different than the real PTB of yesterday. You can diversity hire the public face of things into oblivion, but those don't ever change.

They know what they're doing. We're all playing checkers and they're all playing Chess.

To them, none of this is crumbling around them. They've got theirs, and short of a world-ending event, they'll always have theirs. If the middle class gets gutted along the way, that was part of their plan. And why wouldn't they want to see that result... especially with the gross overpopulation of the planet?

Russia ain't going to use any nukes. The US isn't going to either. Even Lil' Kim isn't ever going to fire any nukes from North Korea. They just like whipping their dicks out to remind everyone that they've got 'em.

No man is infallible though. Though I put the chances of nuclear war at 0%, they'd better really think long and hard about the biological warfare. One of these days they're going to put some designer bioweapon out there that they were sure they had 100% control of and find out that they didn't have a contingency plan in place for when it mutated beyond their expectations. One day they're going to wind up killing 8 Billion people and spend the next 50 years living in bunkers with the rest of the 0.001% with nobody left alive to do their slave work.
