You're the lunatic who posts death threats to public figures and encourages people to kill themselves under the handle that you managed to actually get banned from fff.net, a site that is almost impossible to get banned from.

You're a little boy who lives with his mother who hates you and wishes she could have the world's latest term abortion.

If you were going through half of what I'm going through now, you would have already killed yourself, because you're a pussy.

BTW... How was work today, honey?

It is satisfying having meaningful work. I might eventually write a Firefly story where River gets Kaylee a paying job, kept secret from Mal so that she keeps the money, as an engineer. It is a sitting job that can be done from her quarters. She is a star-ship engine designer. (Kaylee's ultimate payday is a ride to Earth.) For River, Kaylee designs physics experiments for telepathy and precognition. River's psychic powers will go, with Kaylee's engineering, from weird flavors occasionally added to Firefly episodes to whole episodes. And all the while, Mal never figures out what is going on. Better he does not know because he'd say "NO!" You don't have to be psychic to know that about Mal.

6ix, you are pure Russian. Bragging all the time about nothing, making predictions that go nowhere, contemplating Russian roulette. With Russians, their sad story is the history of WWII and the Soviet Union's collapse. With 6ix, his sad story is his family's history. No wonder you drank like a Russian. When will your pain end? Only when the US Democrats are destroyed and the word "Ukraine" is removed from all maps! 6ix and Putin share that need.

Putin Is Running out of Red Lines

Washington finally agreed that American-made F-16 jets could be delivered to Ukraine after months of reluctance and concerns over whether, for Vladimir Putin, giving the aircraft the green light might cross a red line.

Since the start of the Russian president's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the U.S. and its allies have incrementally stepped up their provision of headline-grabbing weapons. HIMARS, the M777 Howitzers and the Leopard and Challenger tanks and, most recently, Patriot missile systems.

The F-16 will encourage Putin to make statements, as he has done before, that Russia might have to resort to draconian measures, such as a nuclear response. The Russian leader threatened in October that it was "not a bluff" to say he would use all means to protect his country.

"Simply put, unless Putin is willing to deploy its nuclear weapons, Moscow cannot retaliate in a meaningful way," Wes Renfro, political science professor at Quinnipiac University, Hamden, Connecticut. "Escalation with nuclear weapons is a losing game for Putin and is unlikely until or unless the Ukrainian boondoggle threatens his grip on power," he told Newsweek.

The planes are not going to be a game-changer on the battlefield, given the strength of Russian air defenses. But Putin is playing a waiting game, hoping that the West will lose interest in supporting Ukraine if the fighting doesn’t end by the second anniversary of this war.

"There will be limits on the munitions and supporting capabilities provided, and I would expect such weapons systems and support for them will come with limits on how they can be used," said Lewis Griffith, professor of international studies at the University of Denver.

Griffith told Newsweek that the U.S. views the F-16 as it did the Abrams tank earlier, as "a technological step up for the Ukrainians but below direct U.S. and NATO involvement and not a system in these numbers that alters Russia’s fundamental strategic calculations.”

Working out accurately who is spending what can be difficult. For international comparison, defence spending is usually reckoned as a share of gdp, at market exchange rates. By this measure global military expenditures appear close to a post-cold-war low, at around 2.5%. But market exchange rates greatly underestimate the true size of defence establishments in countries such as China and Russia, where a given dollar of military spending can pay for a lot more weapons and soldiers.

Russian Lawmaker Suggests Alaska As Nuclear Target

BY BRENDAN COLE ON 5/24/23 AT 7:22 AM EDT

Retired general Andrey Gurulyov, a State Duma deputy, raised the possibility of Moscow attacking the territory that the U.S. purchased from the Russian government in 1867. He discussed with TV anchor Vladimir Solovyov the war in Ukraine. Gurulyov started spitballing some ideas of how Moscow could wrest back the initiative in its fight with the West. He then described how strikes with tactical nuclear weapons against command centers, airfields and so on, would "paralyze" Ukraine. "Then a totally different conversation will start," he said.

Russia’s military is less than meets the eye

While the offensive has seen Moscow field a broad range of conventional weaponry, those next-generation technologies haven’t yet made a meaningful appearance. To the contrary, as the conflict has dragged on, Russia has been forced to rely more and more on foreign military supplies and old Soviet-era hardware to shore up its badly depleted forces.

An exception in this regard has been the Kinzhal, Russia’s most high profile — and supposedly formidable — hypersonic missile. The Kinzhal (“dagger” in Russian), has been billed by Russian president Vladimir Putin as an unstoppable super-weapon for the past half-decade. But it has proved distinctly underwhelming in practice. Last week, for instance, half a dozen of the advanced missiles were neutralized by Ukraine using American-provided defenses.

The second factor affecting Russia’s deteriorating military potential is its deepening “brain drain.” For years, the country’s best and brightest engineers, scientists and innovators have been abandoning Putin’s increasingly authoritarian regime in droves, deepening Russia’s larger trajectory of demographic decline. This trendline has accelerated dramatically since the start of the war in Ukraine, as Russians have voted with their feet to protest the conflict or simply to avoid conscription. Perhaps as many as 1,000,000 Russians are estimated to have left the country since the invasion began, representing the largest such exodus in over a century.

The results have been truly ruinous both for the long-term health of Russia’s population and for its innovative capacity. This was recently made clear by Valentin Parmon, the Vice President of the prestigious Russian Academy of Scientists. In a recent interview with the Interfax news agency, Parmon explained that “no other countries have lost so many workers in the scientific field” as Russia over the past half-decade, numbering a staggering 50,000 people. “[T]he future depends on knowledge-intensive technologies,” said Parmon, “[and] Russia as a state has let those who can do [these specialties] go.”

Nether side is saying how many of its soldies were killed at Artemovsk (Bakhmut) but I'm going to take a stab a it and guess 80,000 Ukrainians (appx 100 per day over appx 800 days) and, since was this was urban combat, assuming 5:1 in Russia's favor (lower than the estimated 6-7:1 for defensive fighting) 16,000 Russians.

THUGR, you're posting complete and utter bullshit. VIDEO EVIDENCE shows that a Patriot missile battery firing off 32 missiles in appx 2 minutes was itself struck on the ground. Probably by (a) Kinzhal missile(s). Go look at the video yourself (if you can find it.It's been scrubbed from the inet, but I watched it myself). You'll see a lot of launches followed by one (some say two) explosions on the ground. Russia says it destroyed one radar and five of eight launchers.

USA says that the installationt was "damaged". (Yeah, I'll bet it was! )

Kiev says, not that anyone should pay attention to them, that they knocked out a perfect score on Kinzhal missiles. If that were the case, then apparently they failed to hit and destroy older, slower, missiles.

When you read claims like that, THUGR, you really REALLY REALLY should look for evidence, especially when those claims come from habitual liars.

ETA: And with all of the potential sources I linked for you, why are you still going to bullshit websites? Yanno, there are thoughtful analysts and reporters out there. They don't always get it right, but at least they're not 90% propaganda 100% of the time.

It took a while to find but here is the original video. Patriot missiles are being fired off so quickly (from at least two locations) it looks like a grand finale of a fireworks show. You have to wait a bit to catch the on-the-ground explosion. Some people saw two, I only saw one.

Signym, do you want me to repost your medical records, again? The information you put on the internet then took down because it was stupid for you to do? Little old 6ix is still shocked a year later, like he is a tiny child, that I would hold on to your information freely splattered all over the internet. Talking about splattered, the Russians splattered their blood literally for Bakhmut:

The Battle of Bakhmut exposed several key flaws in the Russian planning and conduct of operational maneuver. The Russian military command continued to pursue a relentless assault on Bakhmut after the city lost its original operational significance and failed to adjust its military objectives appropriately. The Kremlin, evidently, chased after any potential victory to generate informational effects and allowed Prigozhin to expend a large amount of Russian ammunition and thousands of prisoner recruits and then more professional forces to maintain a battle of no operational significance in Bakhmut. Prigozhin also continued this battle to gain desired political standing in Russia – likely without the intent to pursue the original goal of conducting a wider encirclement of Donbas. The Kremlin’s fixation with Bakhmut indicates that Russia has not learned lessons from the first phases of the war. The Russian military command continues to overestimate Russian military capabilities and has not mastered time and space relationships in this war at its current level of effectiveness. The Russian military command also continues to pursue ill-informed political objectives at the expense of Russian personnel and resources.

It is not even clear that the Battle of Bakhmut is yet over. Ukrainian forces have been conducting local counterattacks on Bakhmut’s flanks, having regained the initiative following Wagner’s culmination.[64]

If people at the pinnacle of the Ukrainian hierarchy stop coming to work because they died, somebody else will do the work and the war continues. Why? Because Ukraine's existence is threatened by ending the war.

On the other hand, if Putin stopped coming to work, the war is over. Whoever replaces Putin has zero reasons to continue Putin's pet project of annihilating Ukraine. Russia's existence is not threatened by ending the Ukraine War just like the US's existence was not threatened by abruptly ending the Afghanistan War. Putin said this war is existential, but Putin is lying to justify his "special military operation" (Russians don't say war or they go to jail).

Lethal Politics: Soviet Genocide and Mass Murder since 1917 by R. J. Rummel

Russian leaders killed other Russians by the tens of millions during the 20th Century. Stalin killed far MORE Russians than Germans. As a strategy, Russian leaders kill their own as a way toward military victory. Here is that mechanism at work in Ukraine:

Wagner Group financier Yevgeny Prigozhin claimed during an interview with Russian political strategist Konstantin Dolgov on May 23 that Wagner lost 10,000 convict recruits and 10,000 full-time professional Wagner fighters killed in action over the course of the Battle for Bakhmut.[1] Prigozhin specifically noted that Wagner had recruited 50,000 prisoners, 20 percent of whom (10,000) died in fighting for Bakhmut.[2] Russian milbloggers immediately seized on the reported losses, thereby shifting the overall Russian conversation away from discussions of the significance of the capture of Bakhmut and towards amplifying speculation surrounding the reported losses. The nationalist pro-war faction, exemplified by the views of former Russian officer Igor Girkin, commented on the massive scale of the reported losses and speculated that real losses may be much higher. Russian politician Viktor Alksnis simply remarked that the Soviet Army lost far fewer soldiers (15,051) in nine years in Afghanistan.[3] Girkin stated that he believes that Wagner’s actual losses could be more than 1.5 times higher than Prigozhin’s claims and pointed out that of the 50,000 recruits Wagner received from prisons, 10,000 died in action and 26,000 reportedly received pardons and returned to Russia, leaving 14,000 prison recruits unaccounted for.[4] Girkin suggested that a large portion of these 14,000 unaccounted-for prison recruits may have also been killed in action and claimed that Wagner has likely suffered more than 40,000 killed in action.[5] Girkin suggested that Prigozhin “keep [his] mouth shut” and stop talking about “wild losses for a very insignificant result.”[6] Another Russian milblogger, by contrast, praised Prigozhin for being open about the scale of losses and stated that the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) would have hidden such figures.[7]

Russian leaders use Russians like artillery shells. If a shell won't do what the Russian leaders want, which is to blast itself at the enemy, the shell is destroyed anyway. That is why it is a crime in Russia to be anti-war. The Russian 2022 Laws Establishing War Censorship and Prohibiting Anti-War Statements and Calls for Sanctions is a group of federal laws promulgated by the Russian government during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_2022_war_censorship_laws The laws have been strongly condemned by human rights groups but when you are only an artillery shell to the Russian leadership, you don't have human rights.

Russia’s military is less than meets the eye
May 24, 2023 Ilan I. Berman

For many years now, officials in Moscow have extolled the virtues of Russia’s “wonder weapons,” military breakthroughs and technological advances (such as fifth generation fighter jets, autonomous battle tanks, and mechanized combat walkers) that they maintained were nothing short of game-changers in modern warfare. For most of that time, officials in Washington and European capitals believed them, and tempered a great many of their policies so as not to antagonize the Kremlin.

But the war in Ukraine has changed all that. Nearly a year-and-a-half into Russia’s “special military operation” against its western neighbor, its next-generation arms have failed to materialize in any meaningful way.

Russia’s high-tech military, in other words, is turning out to be much more modest than advertised. Nor is this state of affairs likely to change any time soon, for at least two reasons.

The first is the widening array of Western sanctions levied on Russia for its ongoing aggression against Ukraine. Contrary to Kremlin claims, those measures appear to be having a real impact on the health of the national economy and manufacturing. Yet the impact on Russia’s future warfighting potential — including its development of next-generation weapons — is likely to be even more pronounced.

A recent study by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a prominent DC think tank, noted that sanctions “create shortages of higher-end foreign components and force Moscow to substitute them with lower-quality alternatives,” and that “for now, Moscow’s efforts at state-backed import substitution remain largely unsuccessful.”

“This ultimately impacts Russia’s ability to manufacture, sustain, and deliver advanced weapons and technology to the battlefield in Ukraine,” the report notes. “Therefore, while the quality of the military equipment used by the Ukrainian army continues to improve thanks to the Western aid, the quality of Russia’s weapons continues to degrade.”

All of which has helped deal a decisive blow to Russia’s image of military invincibility. At the outset of the Ukraine war, Moscow was widely believed to possess the second-strongest army in Europe. Today, because of assorted battlefield missteps and tactical blunders, as well as the aid being provided to Ukraine by the West, it can’t even be said to be fielding the most advanced military in Ukraine itself. The U.S., and everyone else for that matter, is revising its estimates of Russian power accordingly.

Ilan Berman is senior vice president of the American Foreign Policy Council in Washington, D.C.

SECOND: If people at the pinnacle of the Ukrainian hierarchy stop coming to work because they died, somebody else will do the work and the war continues.

Signym, nothing changes if Zaluzhny, Ukraine's military commander and link between Ukraine and NATO, is dead. The War continues because Ukraine continues fighting or else it is annihilated. Is that so hard for you to understand, Signym?

But if Putin is dead, the War ends abruptly because this War is a total waste of Russian resources. Signym, is that also too hard for you to understand?

All the countries invaded by Russia in 1939 joined NATO because Russia would do it again once it recovered from its collapsing government in 1991. Trump can't change that unless Trump nuked Russia in 2017, which he did not.

It would never have happened in the first place if Democrats hadn't stolen the 2020 election through en masse mail-in-fraud ballots and ballot harvesting.

Trump will end the war when he is reelected in November of 2024 and Joe* finally gets the boot.

There doesn't need to be a war. There never needed to be a war.

Do you understand the concept of a sore loser? Trump can't admit he failed and, for perverted psychological reasons, must change the game to claim he was cheated out of a win. If the world was a better place, sore losers would be knocked down and kicked until all their ribs were broken, just to emphasize that they lost. That rib kicking should have happened after the Civil War, but a slave-owning President, Andrew Johnson, pardoned all the Confederates, who then never needed to admit they lost for good reasons.

"Ukraine has said that it intends to take back Crimea, but that it would prefer to do so bloodlessly," Tannehill explained. "The moment that a JASSM [Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile] fired from an F-16 is capable of isolating Crimea, that's the moment when the F-16s are needed most."

The JASSM missiles that Tannehill mentioned as being critical for any potential future operations aimed at disabling the Kerch Strait Bridge or driving the Russian navy from its port in Sevastopol have a range of 370 kilometers. Without JASSMs, the F-16s would still be of use to Ukraine, but their potential would be limited largely to providing an extra layer of air defense against cruise missiles.

"Nobody in Ukraine treats F-16s as a silver bullet that will suddenly end the war," Bielieskov said, "but the aircraft give our military necessary capabilities which could at least help to shorten it."

Despite the best predictions of aviation warfare experts, exactly how the Ukrainian military will put its F-16s to use remains a closely guarded secret.

Who are you kidding, Signym? Ukraine is old man Putin's hobby. With Putin gone, the next person will find another entertainment that is not so expensive and dangerous. Putin's parents were severely traumatized by WWII, while my parents were enriched and had wonderful life experiences during the war. If the next Russian in charge is young, rather than another elderly old fart such as Putin, and hasn't been traumatized like Putin, he won't continue Putin's mentally ill amusements in Ukraine.

Ukrainian Intelligence Says It’s Trying to Kill Putin

... In the first month of the war, then-Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett engaged Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in talks that nearly ended the war. The peace talks were blocked by Washington, but Putin pledged not to target Zelensky with any assassination attempts during those talks. The Kremlin appears to have upheld that agreement until the most recent attempt on Putin’s life.
It is unclear if Moscow will continue to abide by the pledge.
Zelensky has spent several weeks outside of his nation, traveling to allied countries and meeting with his counterparts.

Well, THUGR, unlike SECOND'S unproveable posts about such evanescent topics like subconscious motives, national character etc at least your particular post deals with reality: numbers killed, weapons destroyed, and (eventually) square miles controlled and NATO status of Ukraine (in whatever form it winds up) at the end of the SMO.

Who is Viktor Yanukovych, the former Ukrainian president Putin reportedly wants to put back in power?
by Jeremy Kahn

Who is Viktor Yanukovych?

The 72-year-old Yanukovych was Ukraine’s president from 2010 until he was ousted in February 2014 following widespread protests over his decision to reject the country’s agreement to align itself more closely with the European Union, with an eye toward future membership in the bloc, and instead pursue a Russian financial bailout package and tighter ties to Moscow.

Many Ukrainians and many international civil society groups had also criticized Yanukovych for running a corrupt administration, including charges that he embezzled funds from the government. (Yanukovych has denied he misappropriated government money.) He favored a small cabal of wealthy Ukrainian business tycoons, including his own son, Oleksandr Yanukovych, and members of his extended family. He also amassed a large personal fortune.

Despite having worked for most of his life as a mid-level business executive and then as a civil servant and politician, Yanukovych lived an extravagant lifestyle. His lavish estate on the outskirts of Kyiv, called Mezhyhirya, featured a giant wooden mansion with a pure copper roof, a private zoo, an underground shooting range, tennis courts, a bowling alley, and an 18-hole golf course.

Donbas origins and political rise

Born to a poor family in Donetsk Oblast, in the heavily Russian-speaking region of Donbas, Yanukovych was a trucking and transportation company manager before being appointed vice head and then head of the Donetsk Oblast regional government in 1996 and 1997.

Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma appointed Yanukovych the country’s prime minister in 2002 and his appointment was confirmed by the country’s legislature, the Verkhovna Rada, by a slim majority. He was viewed as pro-Russian, although he publicly stated that he supported Ukraine eventually joining the EU. His cabinet also agreed to send Ukrainian soldiers to support the U.S.-led coalition in the 2003 Iraq War, although it had come out against Ukraine seeking NATO membership.

In 2003, Yanukovych ran for president, drawing much of his support from the southern and eastern areas of Ukraine, which were traditionally seen as more pro-Russian. In the first round of voting in late October, no candidates passed the 50% threshold to be elected, so a runoff election was held a month later. In that vote, Yanukovych was declared the winner, but the election was marred by widespread allegations of fraud made by both Ukrainian civil society groups and international election monitors.

This resulted in two months of sustained protests, civil disobedience, and general strikes, a period that became known as Ukraine’s Orange Revolution. (The protesters had adopted the orange election campaign colors associated with Yanukovych’s opponent, Viktor Yuschenko.) The Ukrainian Supreme Court declared the election void and ordered a re-vote for late December 2004, in which Yuschenko was declared the winner.

Immediately after Yuschenko’s victory, Ukraine’s parliament passed a nonbinding no-confidence motion against Yanukovych’s government and urged the outgoing president, Kuchma, to appoint a caretaker government. Instead, Yanukovych resigned, saying later that he did so to avoid any political violence.

Following his resignation, Yanukovych led the main parliamentary opposition party against the coalition government headed by then Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. At the same time, Yunokovych’s political party, called the Party of Regions, moved explicitly closer to Russia, signing a formal collaboration agreement with the Russian political party United Russia.

Second presidential campaign

In 2009, Yanukovych ran for the Ukrainian presidency again, ultimately defeating Tymoshenko, the other main candidate, in a February 2010 runoff. Initially, Yanukovych said Ukraine’s integration with the EU was the country’s “strategic aim,” but he continued to say that Ukraine should not join NATO and that the country should seek a neutral position between NATO and Russia.

In 2010, Yanukovych announced that Ukraine would give up its stocks of highly enriched uranium and convert its nuclear research reactors, which it had inherited after the collapse of the Soviet Union, to run only on low-enriched uranium fuel. Both moves were hailed internationally as positive steps in nuclear nonproliferation.

At the same time, Yanukovych agreed to extend Russia’s lease on its naval bases in the Crimea, which were due to expire in 2017, for an additional 25 years with a further five-year renewal option. In exchange, Ukraine was given a discount on purchases of Russian natural gas.

While president, Yanukovych was widely condemned for the prosecution of his rival Tymoshenko, who was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2011 on corruption charges, widely seen as politically motivated, related to a gas deal Ukraine signed with Russia when she was prime minister. Yanukovych subsequently refused to pardon her or release her on compassionate grounds to have medical treatment in Germany after she suffered from debilitating back pain while in prison. (She was eventually released in 2014 following Yanukovych’s ouster.)

Tension with Russia

In November 2013, Yanukovych was due to travel to Vilinius, Lithuania, for a summit with the EU where he was widely expected to sign an agreement that would have set out a framework for Ukraine’s relationship with the European bloc, including preferential terms of trade. The agreement would have set Ukraine on a clear path for eventual EU membership.

But the agreement and Ukraine’s move closer to Europe angered Putin, who engaged in a campaign of economic pressure against Ukraine: cutting off energy supplies to the country and blocking almost all imports from Ukraine. This resulted in a 25% reduction in Ukrainian exports and pushed the country’s economy into recession. The Kremlin publicly threatened to drive Ukraine into default on its sovereign debt if it went ahead with the EU trade deal.

On Nov. 21, Yanukovych succumbed to this pressure and suddenly reversed course, saying he would not sign the EU alignment agreement, although he still favored eventual Ukrainian membership in the EU. Instead, he would accept a package of Russian financial assistance to meet the country’s debt obligations.

Downfall

His decision sparked a series of protests, initially centered on Kyiv’s Independence Square, or Maidan, that became known as the Euromaidan protests. Demonstrators camped out in the square and refused to leave unless Yanukovych signed the EU agreement, released jailed protesters, liberalized Ukraine’s constitution, and resigned from office. Police attacked the demonstrators, a move that touched off further protests throughout Western Ukraine. Violence escalated after Jan. 16, 2014, when Yanukovych signed into law a draconian series of restrictions of freedom of speech and assembly. Demonstrators occupied provincial administration buildings throughout Ukraine.

Lawmakers repealed some of the measures, but the protests continued to grow.

By mid-February, the increasingly violent clashes had claimed the lives of at least 28 demonstrators, seven police officers, and a civilian bystander, and injured hundreds of others. On Feb. 21, Yanukovych claimed to have reached an agreement with the opposition, but he then departed Kyiv. He later said his car had been shot at as he left. He eventually traveled to Crimea and then fled to Russia, allegedly with Russian help.

The next day, the Ukrainian parliament voted to formally remove him from office. Months later, the body issued a warrant for his arrest, accusing him of being responsible for “the mass killing of civilians.” In January 2019, a Ukrainian court would eventually sentence him in absentia to 13 years in prison for treason. He later thanked Putin for “saving his life.”

Since going into exile, Yanukovych has given interviews in which he has said he remained “the legitimate head of the Ukrainian state elected in a free vote by Ukrainian citizens.”

Now it appears that Putin may intend to put him back into power.

Russia conducted another massive Shahed-131/136 drone strike across Ukraine on the night of May 24 to 25. Ukrainian military sources reported that Russian forces launched 36 Shahed-131/136 drones at Ukraine from the northern and southern directions and that Ukraine shot down all 36 of the drones.[36] Russian milbloggers claimed that some of the drones reached their intended targets through rear areas of Ukraine, including Kyiv Oblast.[37] Ukraine’s Southern Operational Command noted on May 25 that Ukraine has destroyed 357 Shahed-type drones since Russia began using them in 2022.[38] The White House reported on May 15 that Russia has purchased over 400 drones (primarily Shaheds) from Iran since August 2022.[39] The suggestion that Ukraine has shot down 357 Shahed drones since August 2022 is likely inflated—Ukrainian officials may sometimes count drone crashes due to user error or technical malfunction as official shoot downs, so the actual number is likely to be somewhat lower.

Russia's fearsome S-400 air-defense missiles are getting unexpected missions as Moscow struggles in Ukraine

¦ Russia's S-400 is a highly regarded weapon designed to intercept a variety of aircraft and missiles.

¦ In Ukraine, expensive S-400 interceptors are being used against rocket artillery and ground targets.

¦ Repurposing S-400s for those missions is a sign of Moscow's struggle to turn the tide of the war.

This isn't the first time surface-to-air missiles have been used for other purposes. Egyptian forces fired them at Israeli tanks during the 1973 Arab–Israeli War. But anti-aircraft missiles aren't meant to fired at tanks or cities. For Russia's military, which has long touted its tactics and technology, having to misuse S-400s is a sign things aren't going well.

A 400-pound warhead may be devastating against an aircraft or another missile, but it is actually small compared to the 2,000-pound warhead on a cruise missile like the Russian Kh-22.

Surface-to-air missiles can only be a terror weapon because they're very inaccurate in a surface-to-surface role, Williams said of repurposed missile/aircraft interceptors.

You should ask yourself if any of your Pro-Ukraine cheerleading has made any impact on the world, large or small.

The answer is a definitive no.

You're lucky you live with your parents and they have enough money to keep paying for the anchor that's weighing them down even through the Biden* recession while you focus all of your energy on things that shouldn't matter to you and certainly don't matter to your parents.

Fuck Ukraine. And fuck NeoCons like you and Ted.

Russia’s ‘invincible’ hypersonic missiles prove anything but

It was meant to be the Russian “wonder weapon,” but it turned out to be just another example of Vladimir Putin’s military over-promising and under-delivering.

The Kh-47M2 “Kinzhal” — which means “dagger” in Russian — was billed as a state-of-the-art hypersonic missile, “invincible,” in Putin’s words, to Western air defenses. For the early months of Russia’s full-scale war on Ukraine, it seemed to be just that. The missile had been used in the first year of the war to successfully strike several targets across Ukraine, no doubt causing significant damage.

That all changed when Ukraine received U.S.-manufactured Patriot PAC-2 and PAC-3 air defense systems in April. The PAC-3, the latest version of the venerable American system, was originally developed as part of America’s Strategic Defense Initiative, nicknamed “Star Wars” by its critics, first introduced in the early 1980s by President Ronald Reagan to counter ballistic missiles.

Over a little more than two weeks, Ukrainian-manned Patriots shot down seven out of seven Kinzhals launched at targets throughout Ukraine, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. Pentagon press secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder confirmed the first shoot-down at a press conference on May 9, and another administration official speaking to the New York Times on May 16 confirmed the other interceptions.

During the May 16 attack, which directly targeted the Patriot system, part of the platform suffered “minor” damage, according to U.S. officials, that was repaired within a day. The Kremlin, of course, has maintained the fiction that all its missiles successfully hit their targets. “The fake report that a Kinzhal was allegedly intercepted is a wishful thinking attempt,” a Russian Ministry of Defense source told the state media outlet TASS.

Even if the Ukrainian military is overstating its defensive capability, a Russian missile falling anywhere in Kyiv would have been detected by locals and recorded on social media. Since the arrival of the Patriot missile batteries, that has not happened.

The Kinzhal entered service in December 2017. Two years later, Putin declared that it and other Russian hypersonic weapons proved that Russia was leading the world in hypersonic capability. The boast was reminiscent of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev’s bravado in the late 1950s, when he claimed that Soviet intercontinental ballistic missiles were rolling off the factory floor “like sausages,” feeding the false perception in the United States that the U.S. was at a disadvantage and suffering from a missile gap with Moscow. “We have a situation that is unique in modern history when they are trying to catch up with us," Putin said. “Not a single country has hypersonic weapons, let alone hypersonic weapons of intercontinental range.”

He was wrong.

In reality, the Kinzhal is not that impressive. It is an upgraded version of Russia’s older, ground-launched 9K720 Iskander ballistic missile, modified so that it can be air-launched from Russian aircraft. As for Putin’s claim of the weapon’s hypersonic speed, this was true in the same way all ballistic missiles since the German V-2 rockets started pulverizing London in World War II have achieved hypersonic speeds at certain phases of flight.

Despite Putin’s grand claims, air-launched ballistic missiles are not new technology.

The GAM-87 “Skybolt” air-launched ballistic missile was developed by the United States in the late 1950s, and hit top speeds of Mach 12, well in excess of the speeds the Kinzhal can reach. However, the project was ultimately canceled in 1962, when U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara assessed that the system provided very little benefit over the United States’ existing arsenal of land- and submarine-launched ballistic missiles.

Russian hubris that the system worked perfectly seemed even more incredible in light of the arrest of the third scientist responsible for the development of the Kinzhal on charges of “high treason.” On May 16, the same day Ukrainian Patriots shot down six incoming Kinzhals, Russian state media announced the arrest of Valery Zvegintsev. Zvegintsev joins Anatoly Maslov and Alexander Shiplyuk, two other high-profile Russian scientists who worked on the Kinzhal project and were arrested for alleged treason in the summer of 2022.

Russia's Medvedev Threatens Ukraine With Pre-Emptive Nuclear Strike

By Isabel van Brugen On 5/26/23 at 7:35 AM EDT

Medvedev also weighed in on how long he believed the war could last. "This conflict will last for a very long time. For decades, probably. This is a new reality," he said. "Everything always ends in negotiations, and this is inevitable, but as long as these people are in power, the situation for Russia will not change in terms of negotiations."

Russia's state-run news agency Tass cited Medvedev as saying that it's possible Ukraine "receives warplanes" and "maybe even nuclear weapons" from its Western allies. The U.S., Medvedev said, "operates largely within the field of its pragmatic interests."

"They do not wage a war, they are making money instead. They are trying to eliminate their centuries-long enemy."

"As far as Europe is concerned, it is a strange story for me. They keep heating up tensions with their decisions," Medvedev continued. "Europe has gone mad."

Medvedev has issued nuclear threats frequently throughout Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin himself said in a televised address to the nation in September 2022 that he'd be prepared to use nuclear weapons to defend Russian territory.

He has also suggested this month that Russia has no options left "aside the physical elimination of Zelensky and his cabal." He made the remarks on his Telegram channel after two drones crashed into the Kremlin in Moscow on May 3. Zelensky denied any involvement, saying his country didn't possess weapons capable of such strikes.

Russia Starts Moving Nuclear Weapons to Ukrainian Neighbor

By Jon Jackson On 5/25/23 at 5:12 PM EDT

Russia has begun moving nuclear weapons to Belarus, which shares a 674-mile border with Ukraine, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said Thursday.

Lukashenko's announcement followed Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu meeting earlier in the day with Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin in Minsk to sign documents about the placement of Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.

The news story does not say which direction the nukes are aimed at. Poland? Lithuania? Latvia? Those are NATO members bordering Belarus.

Russia's Medvedev Threatens Ukraine With Pre-Emptive Nuclear Strike. Signym, do you see the word "threat"? That means a nuclear threat, Signym. So far, it is just words, but to give the words a little heftiness, Russia has begun moving nuclear weapons to Belarus, which shares a 674-mile border with Ukraine, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said Thursday. Is that too hard for you to see that there is a "threat", Signym? Or do nukes need to explode before it is a "threat" in your mind?

Russia-Ukraine war live: Kyiv says forces ready to launch counteroffensive

Senior Ukrainian official talks up ‘historic opportunity’ and says Kyiv ‘calm’ about Putin’s plan to move nuclear weapons to Belarus

The Kremlin is likely reviving its information campaign to coerce the West into forcing Ukraine to accept concessions and negotiate on terms favorable to Russia. The Kremlin claimed on May 26 that Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed “the openness of the Russian side to dialogue on the political and diplomatic track, which is still blocked by Kyiv and its Western sponsors” in a phone call with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.[20] Putin’s statement does not indicate that Russia is interested in pursuing negotiations with Ukraine, and the Kremlin has not established any serious grounds for negotiations nor abandoned its maximalist goals to force the Ukrainian government to capitulate. The Kremlin is likely attempting to intensify its false claims about its readiness to negotiate with Ukraine amidst the arrival of the Chinese Special Representative for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui in Moscow on May 26 to discuss a negotiated settlement to Russia’s war in Ukraine.[21] The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that Li previously urged European officials to end the conflict in Ukraine before it escalates during his visit to European states in the past week.[22] The WSJ also reported that a (likely European, but unspecified) diplomat who spoke to Li explained that freezing the conflict was not beneficial to international interests and that Europe would not withdraw its support for Ukraine. The WSJ also reported that another (likely European, but unspecified) diplomat claimed that China’s main interests are ensuring Russian victory and ensuring that Russia does not use nuclear weapons. The claimed interaction likely indicates that China may be attempting to push the West to influence Ukraine into accepting a ceasefire. The Kremlin is likely amplifying its false interests in negotiations ahead of the planned Ukrainian counteroffensive in order to discourage continued Western aid to Ukraine. ISW has previously reported on Russia’s peace negotiation information operations to deter Western support for Ukraine.[23]
