Signym, what are your sophisticated feelings about bombing civilians? Is it criminal? Or does it receive your "mindless rah-rah-ism" approval? Or do you bring forth whataboutism from your rhetorical toolkit? (Cue the WW2 references.)

Russian TV Host Slammed by Pundit: 'It's Criminal To Bomb Peaceful Cities'

In a rare moment of dissent on Russian television, host Vladimir Solovyov's threats to destroy Kyiv and wipe Kharkiv "off the face of the Earth" in response to Ukrainian shelling were met with condemnation by one of his guests on Russia-1.

Yaakov Kedmi calls the host's ideas to bomb Ukrainian cities into submissions "obscene."

"It's obscene, it's not constructive, it's criminal to bomb peaceful cities. These words, 'To wipe Kyiv and Kharkiv off the face of the Earth,' they should not be uttered, especially in Russia," Kedmi said.

"There were no wars in history, where the bombing of a peaceful city, of a civilian population, ever led to some kind of results on the battlefield. Would they be deterred by that? When did it ever happen? It didn't happen in any war," he concluded.

Solovyov, who had been listening quietly, didn't appear upset by Kedmi's comment, quickly saying: "Fine, then we'll keep responding on the level of a girl in the 5th grade, who's crying that our peaceful cities are being bombed."

"I didn't say that," Kedmi said, "but that's the other option. [...] It's not an option to bomb a peaceful city and its population. [...] There are 1,001 ways to fight without touching civilians."

Solovyov, who had until then tried to defend his position saying they would first warn civilians before bombing their cities, remained temporarily quiet by the end of Kedmi's speech, standing with arms crossed and head down.

The episode is a rare example of disagreement among some of the Kremlin's strongest supporters.

As the conflict continues without any significant victories for Russia, Solovyov often mentions Russia's capacity to launch a nuclear strike and calls for the Kremlin to bomb and destroy Ukrainian cities.

Ukraine Launches Assault to Oust Russia From Key Black Sea Peninsula

Ukraine’s military said it launched an operation to push Russian forces from a strategic peninsula on the country’s Black Sea coast, as Kyiv looks to open up its besieged ports and build on significant gains through the country’s south.

Ukrainian forces have begun an assault on the Kinburn Spit, a strip of land jutting into the sea south of Mykolaiv, that has been occupied for months by Russian forces cutting off access to the port city.

“For now, this military operation is in silent mode,” said Natalia Humeniuk, a spokeswoman for Ukraine’s Southern Operational Command, on Ukrainian television late Monday. Ms. Humeniuk didn’t say when the operation had started but said stormy weather provided an advantage for Ukrainian forces in the area.

The larger Kinburn Peninsula is a key strategic prize for Ukraine. The sliver of land lies at a key maritime choke point leading to the port cities of Mykolaiv and Kherson, at the mouth of two large rivers, the Southern Buh and the Dnipro.

Russian forces have used the spit to launch missile, drone and artillery strikes that have hammered the city of Mykolaiv, which remains in Ukrainian control but has suffered under heavy Russian fire throughout the war.

Reclaiming the peninsula could also provide relief to hundreds of thousands of people living in the Mykolaiv region. The near-constant Russian shelling has damaged schools, hospitals, grain silos, port infrastructure and many civilian homes.

The new operation comes as Ukrainian forces attempt to expand on a sweeping offensive that has recaptured vast swaths of land previously occupied by Russia in southern Ukraine. Ukrainian forces earlier this month took back the city of Kherson, the only regional capital claimed by the Kremlin since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine began last February.

Russian forces launched heavy shelling of Kherson on Monday, a senior Ukrainian official said, attacking at a moment when Ukrainian authorities were working to restore normal life to the city. Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, called the shelling “systematic.”

There is no military logic: they just want to take revenge on the locals. This is a huge war crime live,” Mr. Zelensky said in a tweet.

Ukraine's ability to threaten the port of Novorossiysk in southern Russia places Russia's Black Sea Fleet in jeopardy, according to an assessment by Britain's defense ministry.

In its daily intelligence update on the Ukraine war, the U.K.'s defense ministry referenced an apparent attack on Novorossiysk in the Krasnodar region it says was reported by multiple Ukrainian and Russian media outlets on November 18.

Putin moved his Black Sea Fleet from Crimea to Novorossiysk in the Krasnodar region after Ukrainian attacks deep into Crimea.

The defense ministry's update noted that although full details of the Novorossiysk incident are yet to emerge, any demonstration of a Ukrainian capability to threaten Novorossiysk would "highly likely represent a further strategic challenge" for Russia's Black Sea Fleet.

First there was a massive push and invasion by Russia, it looked like they took over half of Ukraine then a push back came from Ukraine rebels, fighters, soldiers

There was great success when bullets and bombs were supplied to counter attack, as Drones and Anti-Tank missiles came in NATO, the USA, the neighbor countries of Ukraine giving supply and aid

but now something different happens, Russian unitshave been seen in Belarus again.

I think the war might be entering something of a stalemate these past weeks and days, apart from the Russian order to retreat back to a line beyond the river at the city of Kherson, Ukrainian forces subsequently started entering the city early November 2022 but outside of this there seems to be little activity and not much shift in the lines of battle

Here is a pic made

There are attacks

but the lines of battle seem to have moved very little

There is an ongoing refugee crisis in Europe after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Over 7.8 million refugees fleeing Ukraine have been recorded across Europe, refugees initially entered neighboring countries to the west of Ukraine that is Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova.

Comrade Signym calls the global news and world leaders’ comments concerning Russia and Ukraine that I post here, mindless rah-rah-ism.

It is the news as its being reported around the world, along with the opinions of the world’s leaders. So in effect, she is claiming anything that differs from Putins’ propaganda to be cheerleading against Russia and biased. Facts Signym, it is the facts about what is going on. And, it is going down exactly as I’ve been saying it would this past decade in our many, many exchanges.

Russia is dead. It is slowly coming to terms with it. You should too.

The lines of battle do not need to move because Russians are willingly jumping into the furnace and being burnt to death:

The Village Of Pavlivka Is A ‘Furnace’ Burning Up Russian Marine Brigades

by David Axe, Forbes Staff, Nov 21, 2022, 08:00am EST

Call it a countercounteroffensive. Two months after the Ukrainian armed forces launched twin counteroffensives in eastern and southern Ukraine, rapidly liberating Kharkiv and Kherson Oblasts from months of brutal Russian occupation, Russian forces pushed back.

But where the Ukrainian counteroffensives resulted in major breakthroughs for the Ukrainians—and galloping retreats by local Russian troops—the Russian countercounteroffensive is a brutal, bloody slog that appears to be killing more Russians than Ukrainians. Worse for the Russians, they’re not gaining significant ground.

Three weeks ago, the Russians attacked west of Donetsk, the capital of the separatist Donetsk People’s Republic. Their aim: to wrest control of all of Donetsk Oblast from the Ukrainians. Russian and separatist regiments and mercenaries from The Wagner Group attacked the Ukrainian garrisons in Bakhmut, Siversk, Pavlivka and other settlements in western Donetsk.

It’s not going well for the Russians and their allies. “The Ukrainians are fighting a very, very successful mobile defense,” U.S. Army Gen. Mark Milley, the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters on Wednesday.

The ongoing battle for Pavlivka, 25 miles southwest of Donetsk, is a tragic microcosm of Russia’s failing campaign. For three weeks, the Russian marine corps’ 155th and 40th Naval Infantry Brigades and other forces have been trying, and failing, to pry the Ukrainian 72nd Mechanized Brigade from Pavlivka, which before the war had a population of 2,500.

The marines lost as many as 300 troops killed, wounded or missing in just the first few days of their assaults on Pavlivka. The losses continued over the next couple of weeks as Ukrainian artillery blasted exposed Russian infantry and Ukrainian missile teams knocked out Russian tanks.

Aleksandr Khodakovsky, a notorious separatist commander in Donetsk Oblast, described Pavlivka as a “furnace” for the Russian marine brigades. The problem, Khodakovsky explained, is marine commanders’ inability to concentrate their surviving forces in order to defeat Ukrainian troops at critical points in the defensive line and achieve a breakthrough. “Planning errors have led to unjustified losses with a meager result,” Khodakovsky wrote.

It’s possible Russian forces cling to the southern edge of Pavlivka—the “meager result” Khodakovsky referenced. But capturing a few blocks of a tiny village isn’t worth the cost of hundreds or thousands of lives in two of the Russians’ few intact brigades. The 155th and 40th Naval Infantry Brigades, which at their peak strength each oversaw 3,000 troops, surely can’t sustain these kinds of losses much longer.

The outlook is bleak for the Kremlin as the Ukrainian counterattack gains momentum and the Russian countercounterattack falters. “The Ukrainians have achieved success after success after success and the Russians have failed every single time,” Milley said. “They've lost strategically, they’ve lost operationally, and I repeat, they lost tactically.”

The Wizard of Oz (Perhaps the title is a reference to this quote: “As for you, my fine friend, you're a victim of disorganized thinking. You are under the unfortunate delusion that simply because you run away from danger, you have no courage. You're confusing courage with wisdom.” — The Wizard of Oz)

More than 100,000 Russian troops have died since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine, according to American estimates that Agence France-Presse cited. The same experts estimated that Ukraine likely has suffered a similar number of losses.

Ukraine has disputed those estimates, ABC News reported. Putin has never released realistic numbers for Russia’s war dead. But more Russian civilians are voicing their displeasure about high mortality rates in Ukraine, wrote the Washington Post. Their anger reflects stories from soldiers at the front who describe equipment shortages, unorganized leadership, and incompetence.

“A Ukrainian drone first flew over us, and after that their artillery started to pound us for hours and hours, nonstop,” Russian conscript Aleksei Agafonov told the Guardian, adding that his unit was ordered to dig trenches but didn’t have enough shovels. “I saw men being ripped apart in front of me, most of our unit is gone, destroyed. It was hell.”

Putin is showing no signs of relenting. He recently sent 50,000 more soldiers to the war zone and has another 250,000 in training as part of a massive call-up of troops dating from September. But sending more drafted men into the meatgrinder won’t help Russia’s cause, argued Center for American Progress senior fellow Larry Korb on Military.com.

With the help of Western weaponry, including new experimental weapons, as the New York Times explained, Ukrainians have gained the momentum in the war, recently retaking the city of Kherson, a major prize. (As CNN reported, survivors are now sharing stories of the brutality, including torture chambers, under Russian occupation.) Meanwhile, Russia’s new draftees were preparing to fight 60 km back from the frontline in Ukraine, suggesting they expect more Ukrainian advancements, the Independent noted.

At the same time, Putin’s hawkish allies appear to be fragmenting. Radio Free Europe referred to Putin’s close ally and pro-war advocate, Yevgeny Prigozhin, as Grigory Rasputin, the Svengali-like monk who controlled Russia’s last tsar in the early 20th century before the Soviet revolution. An oligarch whose wealth comes from lucrative Kremlin catering contracts, Prigozhin owns the private mercenary company, the Wagner Group. To show how demented Russian militarists like Prigozhin have become, the Bulwark related a gruesome story about a hapless Wagner fighter who made the mistake of admitting to switching sides and joining Ukraine, before being murdered on video with a sledgehammer.

Prigozhin might accumulate more wealth as the war drags on. Other oligarchs might not be so optimistic. As the Russian army loses on the battlefield, the Russian economy is on its knees, too. Amid harsh Western sanctions and partial economic isolation, skyrocketing expenses related to the war and exacerbated supply-chain worries and other post-pandemic concerns, the Russian economy shrunk by 4 percent in the third quarter of the year, reported Reuters, officially tipping into recession.

Perhaps hundreds of thousands of ill-trained, ill-supplied recruits will win the day for Russia. Maybe the cold winter will force the West to buy more Russian energy, throwing Putin a lifeline. China could run to Putin’s rescue, too. Or Russia might continue to lose, lose, lose.

Yes, because it is.

You call it "world news" and "world" leaders but in reality your "news" comes from a tightly linked group of western, neocon-controlled people who get their "talking points" from somebody deep in the State Department.

Seriously. They have such a stake in the matter, do you really expect them to tell you the truth?

What do you EXPECT them to say?

"We're getting our ass handed to us militarily and economically and there's nothing we can do about it except throw more assets and people into the bonfire"?

You should listen to Brian, who follows the ACTUAL military situation (supplies, logistics, casualties, frontline news) from Ukrainian, American, and Russian sources

Or maybe the Duran

which also pays attention to world politics and economies

I could also point you in the direction of Colonel Douglas Macgegor, former CIA and security contractor Larry Johnson, Moon of Alabama (written by a German) and others who have more objective opinions and don't have such personal, professional and financial stake in Ukraine.

With so many better, more diverse sources, why do you stick with known liars??

Freezing Russian Troops Giving Away Positions by Lighting Fires

Poorly equipped mobilized Russian troops in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region have been left with no choice but to light fires to keep themselves warm. In doing so, the Russian soldiers are exposing their positions to Ukraine's armed forces.

"The newly mobilized, who have not yet been taught how to properly disguise themselves and not unmask their position, and have poor ammunition—they lit fires, smoked in the trenches— unmasked positions for the artillery of the Armed Forces of Ukraine," Cherevaty said, Ukraine's Liga News reported.

Cherevaty also said that Russian soldiers are wearing low-quality clothing and boots that are unsuitable for the colder weather. As the average high temperature will drop from 13 degrees Celsius (55 degrees Fahrenheit) through September to November, to zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) through December to February, troops will be more unwilling to fight, particularly at night, while those lacking in winter weather clothing and accommodation are highly likely to suffer from non-freezing cold injuries.

For example, when Brian Berletic (New Atlas) says that the USA is running out if weapons and ammo to give to Ukraine, digging deeper and deeper (and older and older) into it's pile of unused weapons to give to Ukraine, he references US ANNOUNCEMENTS of weapons transfers. And when he discusses the front line, he looks at KIEV's maps. It would be hard to find a more neutral source.

Signym, there is a lovely article published today that might give you insight about what is real and what is religious belief: Why Noah’s Ark will never be found (National Geographic)

https://www.nationalgeographic.co.uk/history-and-civilisation/2022/11/
why-noahs-ark-will-never-be-found

For more than a century, people have sought the Old Testament vessel that survived the biblical deluge. Archaeologists say it’s a fool’s errand.

There are approximately 198,000,000 more articles about Noah's Ark at https://www.google.com/search?q=no+one+will+ever+prove+that+noah's
+ark+was+found

Signym, you and 198,000,000 people have powerful belief in Russia. I have total disbelief in Russia and the Bible's Noah's Ark because both Russia and the Bible are man-made products by people who were not particularly competent at mundane life, this earthly world rather than a heavenly or spiritual one, yet these people were highly articulate and very skilled at tricking, deceiving, fooling others into believing fiction is reality.

During the Vietnam War, (USA-issued) facts and figures were in every newspaper, monthly magazine, and TV news report. One set of facts was clear: America extensively damaged Vietnamese real estate while almost no American real estate was damaged. Checking wiki, America was on the losing side. In the distant future, I will check wiki to see who won the war in Ukraine, but for now Russia is extensively damaging Ukrainian real estate while almost no Russian real estate is damaged. Will that achieve a win for Russia? Only time will tell.

Signym, your article says: "At some point before the end of the year I anticipate that Russia will launch a massive counter offensive." The article is selling a single idea. There is only one scenario: Russian victory is total.

Signym, there isn't one scenario. There are three.

Three scenarios for how war in Ukraine could play out

By Shashank Joshi: Defence editor, The Economist

Consider three scenarios for the year ahead.

1) In the first, Russia snatches victory from the jaws of defeat. Russia’s army stabilises the front lines over the winter months, while building new battalions with freshly mobilised recruits. Meanwhile, Republicans in America block new arms packages for Ukraine, as supplies from Europe run out. Russia’s defence industry is starved of semiconductors and specialised equipment, but churns out enough basic armour and artillery to equip the new forces.

By the spring, the new Russian units go on the attack, forcing back a Ukrainian force that is weary from months of offensive action. Russian drones continue to hammer Ukraine’s energy and water infrastructure. As summer arrives, Ukraine is on the back foot. Russia captures Kryvyi Rih, a key industrial town north of Kherson, and Slovyansk and Kramatorsk in Donetsk. Western countries urge Ukraine to accept a Russian offer of a ceasefire. Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president, has little choice but to accept. In the months, perhaps years, that follow, Russia assiduously rearms for another attempt on Kyiv.

2) Far more likely is a second scenario: stalemate. Russia mobilises hundreds of thousands of young men, but cannot turn them into effective fighters. All the best trainers are on the front lines. Experienced officers are dead or already deployed. The recruits are fashioned into basic light-infantry units, lacking armoured vehicles and unfit to go on the offensive—but able to fill trenches and man fortifications.

Russia, having announced a withdrawal from Kherson city in November, safely evacuates the 30,000 or so troops it had on the west bank of the Dnieper river. They retreat east, leaving huge amounts of weaponry behind. It is a triumph for Ukraine, but it ultimately puts Russia in a stronger military position, with the river protecting its left flank. The Ukrainian advance slows to a crawl; Ukrainian troops take heavy casualties for each kilometre of territory won.

Unable to win the war on the battlefield, Mr Putin then tries to prolong it long enough to undermine Ukraine’s economy, sap its morale through strikes on civilian infrastructure and exhaust its partners. Europe struggles to fill its gas-storage sites during 2023, causing blackouts as winter arrives. Mr Putin aims to hold out until late 2024, when he hopes Donald Trump will retake the White House and end support for Ukraine. But it is a high-stakes gamble: Russian opinion turns against the war, its economy shrivels and Mr Putin looks ever more vulnerable.

3) The third scenario is the most encouraging—and perhaps the most dangerous. Ukraine keeps the initiative and the momentum, inflicting heavy damage on Russian forces as they leave Kherson and then bringing its long-range HIMARs rockets within range of Crimea for the first time. Russian lines in Luhansk collapse, with Ukraine recapturing Severodonetsk and then quickly moving farther east. As Russian casualties mount, new recruits refuse to fight. Western countries rush new air-defence systems to Ukraine, blunting the impact of Russia’s terror tactics, based on its rapidly dwindling arsenal of precision missiles.

In the spring Mr Zelensky orders his army to open a new front in Zaporizhia. Five brigades slice through Russian lines, cutting Mr Putin’s land bridge to Crimea and encircling Mariupol by the summer. Ukraine moves its HIMARs rocket launchers into the south, targeting ports, bases and depots in Russian-occupied Crimea. Ukraine threatens to enter the peninsula. Mr Putin issues an ultimatum: stop, or face the use of nuclear weapons. Victory is within sight for Ukraine. But so, too, are the risks that it brings.¦

In 2013, Johnson falsely accused John Kerry of war crimes in Vietnam, alleging that Kerry had "raped some poor Vietnamese woman."

Also, your "three predictions" are already seriously out of date. Russia withdrew from Kherson, but in good order with all of their equipment.

Lie your head off.
And if it blows up, throw hapless reporter under the bus:

Quote:

Fired AP Reporter Who 'Risked Triggering WWIII' Actually Did Nothing Wrong

Wednesday, Nov 23, 2022 - 04:20 PM

On Tuesday we [and many other] reported that the Associated Press had fired reporter James LaPorta, two days before his birthday, over an erroneous report which cited a 'senior US intelligence official,' who claimed that a Russian missile fired into Poland had killed two civilians.

If true, the bombshell development could have potentially triggered 'Article 5' - the mutual defense agreement between NATO members, risking WWIII.

AP later retracted the story after it was revealed that Ukraine fired the missile, and the outlet issued the following correction which pinned blame on the anonymous intelligence official:

* In earlier versions of a story published November 15, 2022, The Associated Press reported erroneously, based on information from a senior American intelligence official who spoke on condition of anonymity, that Russian missiles had crossed into Poland and killed two people. Subsequent reporting showed that the missiles were Russian-made and most likely fired by Ukraine in defense against a Russian attack.*

Five days after the report, LaPorta was fired. But Slack messages obtained by Semafor reveal that he did nothing wrong - aside from working for AP in the first place.

The messages begin with LaPorta passing along a tip from a "senior American intelligence official" who was "vetted by Ron Nixon." Nixon is an Associated Press vice president.
Via Semafor

Next, editor Lisa Leff asked if the wire service could run with the narrative despite having a single source - which is against AP's rules for anonymous sources.

"that call is above my pay grade," LaPorta replied.

Another AP reporter, Vanessa Gera, suggests moving forward with the report, writing, "I can't imagine a US intelligence official would be wrong on this."

Leff then asks LaPorta if he is "in position to work up an urgent" - to which he replies, "No, I'm actually at a doctor's appointment. What I passed is all I know at the moment."

Then, Gera and Leff decide to run with it.

In short, LaPorta - a former USMC infantryman, was fired after forwarding a tip from a vetted source, and then demurring when asked if he thought they should run with it.

He has since been ordered not to comment on the situation, saying that he "would love to comment on the record, but I have been ordered by the AP to not comment." As such, Zero Hedge has not reached out for comment.

Oddly (or maybe there's a perfectly good reason for it), journalist John Leichester's name was also on the byline of the article in question despite being nowhere in the slack conversation - though he wasn't fired.

* While LaPorta said Nixon had vetted his source, Nixon later said he did not know that the source was being cited for the missile story, according to people who spoke to David Bauder, an Associated Press reporter.

The Associated Press has taken additional disciplinary action but declined to say against whom that action was taken. There have been no reports of any person besides LaPorta losing a job, including John Leicester, who was also listed on the byline.

According to Bauder, Leicester was not involved with the anonymously sourced material being placed into the story. -The Epoch Times*

Most importantly, however, who was the anonymous 'senior US intelligence official' that fed LaPorta a false narrative which risked WWIII?

Russia now has an economy smaller than Canada. Did you ever wonder how Russia did poorly with all the land and people it has? Since most Russians can't compare Russia to other countries, Russians will never sense what is wrong, will they? But Russia can keep falling in the same way North Korea keeps falling behind South Korea. North Korea handles that by making it a crime to know.

North Korea has the world’s fourth-largest military, with more than 1.2 million personnel, and is believed to possess chemical and biological weapons. While it remains among the poorest countries in the world, North Korea spends nearly a quarter of its gross domestic product (GDP) on its military.

Signym, I suppose you don't know that North Korea's Army exists to prevent South Korea from conquering the North. But the North Korean Army has a dual purpose. Not only can it defend against a South Korean attack, but it can, surprise!, also invade South Korea. The various Kims who have controlled North Korea never have tried another invasion since the Korean Armistice Agreement of 1953. Perhaps the invasion of the South will never happen because of the strong possibility that the USA would fight along side of South Korea. China will not be fighting along side of North Korea because Chinese leaders are smarter today than Chairman Mao in 1953.

Russia and Ukraine have a relationship that is similar to North and South Korea. One big difference is that Kim Jong-un is not delusional about the strong cultural ties between North and South, while Putin is delusional about Russian ties to Ukraine. Russia has tried to commit genocide in Ukraine on several occasions. Russians deny it, but who do they think is gullible enough to believe Russian denials? Ukrainians don't believe the Russians. North Korea never did try such genocidal insanity in South Korea.

The other big difference is that the USA won't fight along side of Ukraine. If North Korea had a border with Ukraine, it could do as much or more damage to Ukraine than Russia has done because the USA will not fight North Koreans invading Ukraine. The USA will fight North Koreans invading South Korea because of the history behind the Korean War way back in 1953.

Signym, you can place as many /snicker tags as you want in your reply, but that shows you understand very little, much the same as Russians don't understand why Ukrainians fight rather than surrender or why Russia is poor. Russians do not understand extremely simple concepts and that has made Russia a much poorer country than Russia would be if its people would get a clue about what they are doing wrong and, using their commonsense, stop doing it.

The Russians and the North Koreans keep telling themselves that there is no connection between their international belligerency and their relative poverty compared to countries in similar conditions. The USA's belligerent attitude hasn't helped it to prosper, either. If the Iraq War and Afghanistan War hadn't been fought, the USA would be in better economic shape. Iraq and Afghanistan would have been better off, too. Looking backwards, the Napoleons of the World are in charge of where and when to go to war. The Napoleons fight while their country pays a price for their belligerency.

War of the Sixth Coalition
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napoleon#War_of_the_Sixth_Coalition
Quote:

Alexander told the Sénat that the Allies were fighting against Napoleon, not France, and they were prepared to offer honourable peace terms if Napoleon were removed from power. The next day, the Sénat passed the Acte de déchéance de l'Empereur ("Emperor's Demise Act"), which declared Napoleon deposed.

Napoleon had advanced as far as Fontainebleau when he learned that Paris had fallen. When Napoleon proposed the army march on the capital, his senior officers and marshals mutinied.[206] On 4 April, led by Ney, the senior officers confronted Napoleon. When Napoleon asserted the army would follow him, Ney replied the army would follow its generals. While the ordinary soldiers and regimental officers wanted to fight on, the senior commanders were unwilling to continue.

Without any senior officers or marshals, any prospective invasion of Paris would have been impossible. Bowing to the inevitable, on 4 April Napoleon abdicated in favour of his son, with Marie Louise as regent. However, the Allies refused to accept this under prodding from Alexander, who feared that Napoleon might find an excuse to retake the throne.[207][208] Napoleon was then forced to announce his unconditional abdication only two days later.[208]

Russia’s High-Tech Artillery System Was Supposed To Win The War In Ukraine.

The close integration of tanks, infantry and artillery should allow the guns to shoot fast at enemy troops that might break cover for less than a minute at a time. That’s all the time well-trained Russian gunners would need, in theory. “Today, the cycle [from reconnaissance to engagement] takes literally 10 seconds,” said Maj. Gen. Vadim Marusin, deputy chief of staff of Russia’s ground forces.

The fire-control system worked reasonably well on a small scale during the first phase of Russia’s war on Ukraine, in the eastern region of Donbas in 2014 and 2015. Russian batteries frequently disrupted Ukrainian attempts to mass forces for attacks.

But between 2015 and 2022, the Russian army’s biggest campaign was in Syria, where the fighting was infrequent and the enemy was unsophisticated. Artillery skills atrophied, according to Fomin. “The experience of Syria does not suit Ukraine at all,” he wrote.

Moreover, the army grew complacent — and acquired too few Orlan drones to support the fire-control system on a large scale. “On Feb. 24, most of the artillery went into battle with compass and binoculars at hand,” Fomin wrote. “The spotter needed to climb a tree or somewhere else and control the fire — there were not enough [unmanned aerial vehicles] and, in most cases, there was no UAV.”

The radar vehicles were present but couldn’t compensate for the drone shortage. “For the most part, no one knows how to use them or, perhaps, they are not effective,” Fomin wrote of the radars. “I can say one thing for sure: I have never heard at the command post that they received target designation from radar devices.”

With too few drones and broken radar links, and relying on spotters with binoculars clinging to trees, Russian artillery batteries rolling into Ukraine at best were inefficient. At worst, they were blind.

A lack of drones also has prevented Russian batteries from making good use of their Krasnopol laser-guided shells. Orlan-30 drones fitted with laser designators are the best means of guiding the Krasnopols to a target, according to Fomin. But without adequate numbers of Orlans to designate targets, the high-tech shells sit unused.

The situation has improved since February, Fomin claimed. Many batteries now have Chinese-made DJI quadcopter drones. A quadcopter might not have a laser-designator, but it does have a video camera — and that’s a big improvement over a spotter in a tree. Units also have begun swapping messages using social-media app Telegram.

As Russia’s wider war on Ukraine grinds into its ninth month, the Russian artillery fire-control system still isn’t working as designed, Fomin claimed. But it’s not too late, he stressed. “The Russian gods of war will easily solve the issue with Ukraine if more Orlan-30s are given to the troops to adjust Krasnopol,” he claimed.

The problem, of course, is that Russia is struggling to acquire drones. Domestic manufacturers are being squeezed by foreign sanctions, forcing the Kremlin to cut deals with Iranian industry. But even the Iranian drones include many foreign parts. Iran’s drone-makers might also be vulnerable to sanctions.

Worse, the Russian army’s training standards are getting lower, not higher, as experienced troops die or wind up in hospitals — and draftees with no more than two weeks of cursory instruction replace them. What chance do almost untrained conscripts have of operating a sophisticated fire-control system?

Russian soldiers who die in combat in Ukraine “belong to the state,” a regional governor said at a meeting with the mothers of fallen troops Thursday.

The blunt comments from Igor Kobzev, the head of the Irkutsk region in southeast Siberia, come as the Russian military officially acknowledges fewer than 6,000 casualties despite suffering major setbacks in its nine-month invasion.

Quoting his own mother's words to him when he enrolled in a military academy, Kobzev, 56, said:

“From now on you don’t belong to me, you belong to the state, the homeland.”

“With honor and great understanding, I hand over an 18-year-old boy into service in the Armed Forces and you’re becoming a person of the state.”

At the meeting, Kobzev awarded medals to the fallen soldiers’ mothers and claimed that only 28 Irkutsk region natives have died in Ukraine.

Independent media outlets tracking Russia's military deaths say 122 servicemen from the Irkutsk region have died in Ukraine since February.

The outlets have been able to confirm the names of 9,000 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine.

Senior U.S. officials estimate that 100,000 Russian troops have died, gone missing or been seriously injured in the war.

President Vladimir Putin is expected to meet the mothers of soldiers fighting in Ukraine later Friday.

The run-up to the anticipated meeting has been plagued by accusations from the soldiers’ relatives that Putin will likely meet handpicked representatives and continue ignoring their concerns.

The European Parliament has experienced a cyber attack that started not long after it declared Russia to be a state sponsor of terrorism.

The Parliament on Wednesday passed a resolution that details Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine, weighs international definitions of terrorism, and – over nine pages and 4250 words – concludes that Russia is a state sponsor of terrorism. https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/TA-9-2022-0405_EN.html

Not long after the resolution passed, this happened:

The availability of @Europarl_EN website is currently impacted from outside due to high levels of external network traffic. This traffic is related to a DDOS attack (Distributed Denial of Service) event. EP teams are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.

Pope Francis on Wednesday compared the war in Ukraine to the “terrible Holodomor genocide” of the 1930s, when the policies of the Soviet dictator, Joseph Stalin, caused a devastating famine in Ukraine.

The pontiff’s comparison of Moscow’s attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine to Stalin’s decision to let millions in Ukraine starve represents one of his strongest condemnations yet of the Russian invasion.

“Let us pray for peace in the world, and for an end to all conflicts, with a special thought for the terrible suffering of the dear and martyred people of Ukraine,” Pope Francis said during his weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square. “And let us think of war-torn Ukraine.”

The pontiff then asked that people join Ukraine this Saturday in commemorating “the terrible Holodomor genocide, the extermination by hunger of 1932-33 artificially caused by Stalin.”

“Let us pray for the victims of this genocide and let us pray for all Ukrainians, the children, the women and the elderly, the babies who are today suffering the martyrdom of aggression,” he said.

Ukrainian historians argue that Stalin, as head of the Soviet Union, used a famine brought on by the Soviets’ forced collectivization of farms to crush Ukrainian aspirations for independence. The famine began in Kazakhstan and southern Russia but was most devastating in Ukraine, where entire villages were left to starve.

Wagner Group sends EU Parliament a message with ‘bloodied’ hammer

After Europe declared Russia a 'terrorist state' Vladimir Putin's crony Yevgeny Prigozhin responded to EU vote on Russia: 'I don't know what law the European Parliament is guided by, but according to our legislation, from today we declare the European Parliament dissolved,' he said.

Sick moment 'Putin's chef' Prigozhin sends bloodied hammer to European parliament. The head of Russian private army Wagner has trolled the West showing a bloodied sledgehammer he wants to present to the European Parliament. Vladimir Putin 's crony Yevgeny Prigozhin was responding to a vote to declare Russia a 'state sponsor of terrorism'. The sick stunt relates to an episode in which a Wagner fighter from Russia was bludgeoned to death with a sledgehammer after defecting to Ukraine, before being exchanged back allegedly at his request.

You remind me of the Russians going to war rather than to work. By skipping work, the Russians make themselves poorer. By being incompetent warriors, the Russians get killed in huge numbers even when they win battles. There will be long lasting bad consequences for Russia because this war will be remembered as Russians murdering Ukrainians just because the Russians feel a need to kill. No amount of Russian denialism or false accusations against Ukraine/EU/Nato/UK/USA/Finland/Sweden or generally threatening to nuke the world will change the sad future Russia has created for itself, win or lose in Ukraine.

100,000 is NOT a large number for a war. Why do you disbelieve the number? 655,000 total deaths in the Iraq War (over 90% of them violent) as of June 2006 (per the 2006 Lancet study). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualties_of_the_Iraq_War

But on the other hand, 100,000 is a huge number for a "special military operation". Calling it a war rather than a "special military operation" will get a Russian imprisoned for 15 years. The country’s media regulator Roskomnadzor forbids describing the war as an “invasion” or “war”, insisting it be called a “special military operation”.

Refusing to fight in the "special military operation" is punishable with only 10 years of prison time. Doesn't seem fair that newspaper reporters get longer prison sentences.

Surrender or Die! Lukashenko threatens Ukraine with 'complete destruction' if Kyiv fails to capitulate

Belarusian President and Putin puppet Aleksandr Lukashenko has blamed Ukraine for the Russian destruction of its energy infrastructures and civilian cities, warning that "complete destruction" is inevitable if they do not surrender. The long-standing dictator suggested Ukraine were blocking peace talks by continuing to fight against an ailing Russian military in the south and east, and said he would "explain to the Ukrainian people" what had happened after they surrendered. His comments were made as millions of Ukrainian citizens were plunged into darkness, forced out of their homes and deprived of a water supply due to Russian missile strikes hundreds of miles behind the front lines.

Lukashenko said: "Everything is in Ukraine's hands. No, not because I want to shove this topic on Ukraine and Zelensky.

"Truly, everything is in Ukraine's hands, if they don't want the death of a huge number of people. It will be difficult, complex, challenging, but if they want to recover, this needs to stop because next will be the complete destruction of Ukraine.

"It is not what Putin was saying, long before the operation, that this will risk losing the state, the statehood of Ukraine. No, this will be the destruction of Ukraine. It needs to stop.

"Listen, the way we fought with fascist Germany, 30 million people died. Who remembers this today? In Belarus and in a bit of Russia, that is it.

"So, the wounds have healed. Now they are ready not just to talk, but to cooperate, to be friends. Same here. We'll manage it, we'll make amends.

"We, our generation, probably will be able to explain to the Ukrainian people what has happened.

"Thus, whichever way you go, there will be peace negotiations. Peace, peace and peace again."

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Thursday echoed Lukashenko's sentiment of blaming Ukraine for Russia's invasion and the civilian hardship suffered.

He said: "Ukraine's leadership has every opportunity to bring the situation back to normal, has every opportunity to resolve the situation in such a way as to meet the demands of the Russian side and, accordingly, end all possible suffering of the civilian population."

As the pair attempted to exculpate Putin of his barbarism, residents of Ukraine's bombed capital clutched empty bottles in search of water and crowded into cafés for power and warmth on Thursday The latest round of Russian missile strikes a day earlier had plunged the city and much of the country into the dark.

In scenes hard to believe in a sophisticated city of 3 million, some Kyiv residents resorted to collecting rainwater from drain pipes as repair teams laboured to reconnect supplies.

Friends and family members exchanged messages to find out who had electricity and water back. Some had one but not the other. The previous day's aerial onslaught on Ukraine's power grid left many with neither.

And as Kyiv and other cities picked themselves up, Kherson on Thursday came under its heaviest bombardment since Ukrainian forces recaptured the southern city two weeks ago.

The barrage of missiles killed four people outside a coffee shop and a woman was also killed next to her house, witnesses said, speaking to Associated Press reporters.

Western leaders denounced the bombing campaign with French President Emmanuel Macron calling the strikes "war crimes".

Russian defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov acknowledged that it targeted Ukrainian energy facilities but he said they were linked to Ukraine's military command and control system and that the aim was to disrupt flows of Ukrainian troops, weapons and ammunition to front lines.

Authorities for Kyiv and the wider Kyiv region reported a total of 7 people killed and dozens of wounded.

If Putin really and truly said the following, it is big news because Russia only has around 1,000,000 active personnel and 2,000,000 reserve personnel:

Putin tells Army it needs 5 million troops to 'finish war with NATO in Ukraine'

Vladmir Putin is telling his military commanders Russia need to deploy five million troops in order to triumph in Ukraine. A document doing the rounds in military and political circles in Moscow entitled "Conclusions of the war with NATO in Ukraine" has highlighted the vast challenges now facing Russia.

There has not been such a war in the previous 80 years, and Russia needs its army to consist of nearly five million troops in order to win.

Even if Putin really did calculate he needs 5,000,000 troops to win, I don't believe he would allow that estimate to be in a publicized government document unless he will be switching terminology from "special military mobilization" to old-fashion war/invasion.

Will you believe an official Russian news source?

Military operation in Ukraine, 25 Nov, 12:17

Russia used to live by someone else’s rules, going through purge now — Putin

The president said that "ultimately those who tried to control us - it’s thanks to their efforts, by and large, that we ended up in that situation, including in the zone of the special military operation"

NOVO-OGARYOVO, November 25. /TASS/. Russia used to live by someone else’s rules, an is going through a purge now, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday.

"What happened in the previous years was largely because we played, lived by someone else’s rules. The events of today are a path to some internal purging and reinvention," he said as he met with the mothers of the servicemen that participate in the special military operation.

He said in the 1990s and the 2000s "it seemed to us everything would be okay, but it wasn’t so."

"Moreover, we started to live and play by someone else’s rules and we took a delight in the fact that someone was trying to control us," Putin said.

He said "ultimately those who tried to control us - it’s thanks to their efforts, by and large, that we ended up in that situation, including in the zone of the special military operation."

"They pushed us to do this," the president said.

He said "nothing would have happened" if it hadn’t been for the coup in Ukraine in 2014 that toppled the government in that country.

https://tass.com/politics/1542117

There is an alternate explanation for why Putin invaded Ukraine, but not from TASS:

Invading Georgia gave Vladimir Putin a rush of confidence to invade Ukraine.

August 2008. The most-intense fighting between Russia and Georgia lasted only five days, before a ceasefire was agreed. However, some analysts say the agreement "favoured Moscow", and the West's weak response to the conflict emboldened Vladimir Putin to eventually invade Ukraine.

Russia suffered few negative consequences on the global stage as a result of its invasion. Western leaders were slow to respond to the crisis and wanted to resolve the conflict through talks, says Dr Rasmuss Nilsson, a lecturer in Russian and post-Soviet politics at University College London.

"The year before the war, before the fighting, Georgia asked over the summer, repeatedly, for help and did not get it," he says. "The West makes it clear it is not going to help militarily, but France, in particular, tries to push for a diplomatic solution." At the time, not all nations viewed Russia as an "aggressor", due to prior fighting and attacks between separatists and the Georgian military, Dr Nilsson says. "Russia sold it as a humanitarian intervention at the time," he said.

Russia has murdered 61,911,000 people from 1917 to 1987. You and Russians may think history will restart anew Monday morning when everything that happened before is canceled out by your amnesia and stupidity, but the rest of the world, including Ukrainians, don't forget. A helpful reminder:

R.J. Rummel, Lethal Politics - Soviet Genocide and Mass Murder since 1917 (Published 1990)

While there are estimates of the number of people killed by Soviet authorities during particular episodes or campaigns, until now, no one has tried to calculate the complete human toll of Soviet genocides and mass murders since the revolution of 1917. Here, R. J. Rummel lists and analyzes hundreds of published estimates, presenting them in the historical context in which they occurred. His shocking conclusion is that, conservatively calculated, 61,911,000 people were systematically killed by the Communist regime from 1917 to 1987.

Preface

This book is part of a project on government genocide and mass killing in this century. The aim is to test the hypothesis that the citizens of democracies are the least likely to be murdered by their own governments; the citizens of totalitarian, especially Marxist systems, the most likely. The theory is that democratic systems provide a path to peace, and universalizing them would eliminate war and minimize global political violence. This was the conclusion of my Understanding Conflict and War,' and has been further confirmed by systematic, empirical tests since.

In the process of that research, I discovered that governments have murdered tens of millions of their own citizens, and that in some cases, the death toll may have actually exceeded that of World War II. To get some idea of the numbers involved, I surveyed the extent of genocide and mass killing by governments since 1900. The results were shocking: according to these first figures—independent of war and other kinds of conflict—governments probably have murdered 119,400,000 people—Marxist governments about 95,200,000 of them. By comparison, the battle-killed in all foreign and domestic wars in this century total 35,700,000.

These monstrous statistics sharply reoriented my research. For more than thirty years as a political scientist and peace researcher, I had focused my research on the causes and conditions of war, conflict, and peace. I had believed that war was the greatest killer and that nuclear war would be a global holocaust. Now I have found that the total killed by government in cold blood was almost four times that of war. It was as though a nuclear war had already occurred.

Have you ever heard of Tit-for-Tat? There is nothing Marxist about that idea from game theory. When people are cooperative, Tit-for-Tat is very kind to everyone. Everyone gets rich and happy. But when people are uncooperative, that is when Tit-for-Tat is revealed to be a very brutal method for dealing with uncooperative people because it is painful. Investopedia will explain it to you: https://www.investopedia.com/terms/t/tit-for-tat.asp

Russia and it's client state, North Korea, have made themselves poor because they are the most uncooperative countries. Because Russia and North Korea are what they are, they will stay poor, just as angry poor white trash in America stay poor because they are uncooperative. Trump can't fix what is wrong with his white trash voters. They have to fix themselves. The world can't fix what is wrong with Russia and North Korea. They have to change themselves into countries that don't automatically threaten, at least once per week, the rest of the world with nukes.
